022 was quite a year, with domestic turmoil, the war in Ukraine and the cost of living crisis all putting a strain on individuals and businesses alike. It was, as I’ve said, a challenge for small businesses like us, but hopefully, but we’ve come through it with the continued support of our subscribers, readers and advertisers, and I’m delighted to announce that MMI will now consist of 100 pages in each issue going forward. Thinking ahead, I’d like to continue to diversify the content of MMI, bringing you more approaches to the hobby, introducing you to new manufacturers and products, and expanding our reputation for top quality modelling content and first-class reference material. We have a lot of content to include and much more planned, so please do take advantage of our special subscription offers to ensure you continue to get your copy each month. I’m aware that some parts of the United Kingdom have had some distribution issues recently, so if you have any difficulty tracking down a copy of MMI or any other of our modelling titles, just drop us a line and we’ll be able to tell you where your nearest stockist is. This month’s issue has a suitably wintery theme to it. Michał Tafil returns with a superb diorama based around Trumpeter’s latest NKL-6 Aerosan kit, while Ilya Yut builds another Trumpeter classic, their 2S3 Akatsiya self-propelled howitzer, in a winter camouflage scheme. We stick with Cold War subjects as Domingo Hernandez tackles W-Models’ excellent 1/48-scale T-64 main battle tank. The T-64 was a mainstay of the Soviet forces that faced the NATO alliance across the Inner German Border in the last years of the Cold War and in this month’s Armour in Profile I look at the capabilities and tactics of the Soviet forces stationed in eastern and central Europe in this period. For World War II fans we have a second Quarterscale feature as Ramòn Segarra builds Hobby Boss’s Sherman M4A1 76(W) as a Normandy tank. Sticking with World War II but delving into the realms of the Paper Panzers, Sante Candia returns with Amusing Hobby’s VK 7201(K) prototype. We also have a superb small-scale vignette as Stefan Szymanski presents a 3D-printed model of ‘Big Bertha’. We also look at two classic Quarterscale German armour kits as John Steinman details Tamiya’s recently rereleased Tiger and Luciano Rodriguez builds their Panzer 38(t). Finally, inspired by last month’s Armour in Profile feature, I build Rye Field Model’s impressive Leopard 2A6M CAN. Until next month, stay safe and happy modelling.

he other giant among Ukrainian model manufacturers is, of course, ICM. They too have maintained a steady stream of releases during the war and have some superb new kits this month. The Crew of ‘Stugna P’ Anti-Tank Complex (ref. 35750) is the first in their ‘Brave Ukraine’ series of kits commemorating the heroic efforts of the Armed Forces of Ukrainian against Russian aggression. The kit shows a three-man UAF crew preparing a Stugna-P ATGM for firing. The missile and launcher are included, as is a remotecontrol firing unit. This is bound to be a popular kit and judging from the quality of ICM’s recent figure kits, it’s going to be a winner. s.E.Pkw. Kfz. 70 with Zwillingssockel 36 (ref. 35503) is new kit based on the Kfz. 70, first

04968 Hawker Hurricane Mk IIb, 1:32

03823 B-26 Invader, 1:48

released in 2012. The s.E.Pkw Kfz.70 was based on the Horch 108 Typ 40. It was equipped with the Zwillingssockel 36 anti-aircraft machine gun

mounting two 7.92mm MG 34 machine guns. It could engage air targets or act as a fire support vehicle, with a range of up to 2000 metres. This is a welcome addition to the ranks of early-war German softskins. ICM also have a range of versatile and good value acrylic paints and two new sets are released this month. WWI US Infantry (ref. 3024) contains five paints and one varnish designed to paint ICM’s range of World War I US figures. Armed Forces of Ukraine: Pixel Camouflage Uniform (ref. 3025) similarly contains five colours and a matt varnish and is ideal for painting the many Ukrainian-themed kits that are now appearing on the market. Our thanks to ICM for the product information (www.icm.com.ua). Their kits and paints are also available from good model shops.

ore fabulous tools you never knew existed but will wonder how you ever did without this month from Tyrell Models. As well as resin figures and accessories from the likes of Alternity Miniatures and HD Models, Dave at Tyrell carries modelling tools from Far Eastern manufacturers, like Taiwan-based U Star and Dspiae. Many of these tools were developed for the kind of detail work that is the mainstay of Gunpla custom builds, but they have a wide range of applications for hobbyists of all stripes. First, we have a couple of Dspiae tools. When converting any of type of plastic or resin figures, regardless of scale, a good quality razor saw is a must. Their Aluminium Alloy Razor Saw (ref. AT-HW) is a combination of aluminium alloy and ABS plastic that tightly secures the very sharp and very strong razor saw blade within the handle for added rigidity. The protective cap is designed to fit seamlessly over the blade using a magnetic locking system both to protect the blade and your fingers. The blade itself is of high-quality stainless steel giving it the right mix of strength and flexibility. I’ve been using it to convert some 28mm multipart figures and the precision of the cutting is first class. In the same class is their Aluminium Alloy Hobby Knife (ref. DK-1). This too is made from an anodised aluminium alloy for an elegant and sturdy finish. The blade is very small, very sharp and can be rotated for maximum flexibility. Compartments at both end of the handle provide storage for new blades. If you are serious about figure modelling, then you won’t get a better and more versatile precision

hobby knife than this one. Spare blades for both tools are also available from Tyrell Models. A new name to me is Galaxy Tools from Shenzhen in China. They offer a range of nicely packaged and produced precision modelling tools. Their Curve Cutting Knife (ref. TO9A13) is a good solution to a perennial problem that any modeller who has ever tried scratch building from plastic will have encountered. While a  traditional hobby knife is perfect for cutting in a straight line, they are not ideal when you need to cut a curve. This curve-cutting knife from Galaxy Tools solves this problem with some innovative engineering. The secret to this blade is that the cutting blade is spring-loaded. When you insert the blade, it is not held in a fixed position as a standard modeller’s knife would. The blade can move,

which makes it easy to cut a curve. It’s ideal for cutting masking tape and masking sheets if you need to paint camouflage, for example. The blade can smoothly move through 360 degrees, which gives you ultimate control, while the knife shaft itself is constructed of high-quality alloy and feels comfortable in the hand. The cutting blade is carbon steel and ultra-sharp to

couple of times and I have to say I was impressed. It is quite a delicate, precision instrument, but if you’re a serious hobbyist, it’s a tool you’ll want in your arsenal. I know there are some more exciting new product lines to add to the Tyrell Models inventory over the coming months, so watch this space. In the meantime, check out www.tyrellmodels.co.uk.

enable you to make the finest of curved cuts. The cap that comes with the knife also ensures your blade does not roll off your bench, while the tool comes in its own bespoke storage box. I’ve tried this a

n 1935, the Czech tank manufacturer ČKD (Českomoravská KolbernDaněk) began work on a replacement for the LT35 tank they were jointly producing with Škoda Works. The resulting vehicle was designated LT vz. 38 (also referred to as LT-38). Three years later, the Czech Army ordered 150 of these tanks, though none had entered service by the time of the German occupation in March 1939. Germany ordered continued production of the vehicle, as it was considered to be an excellent tank, especially compared to the Pz.Kpfw.I and Pz.Kpfw. II (the Panzerwaffe’s main

tanks). It was first introduced into German service as the L TM 38, the name being changed in January 1940 to Panzerkampfwagen 38(t). The suffix ‘t’ stood for ‘tschechisch’, the German word for ‘Czech’. The vehicle was of conventional inter-war design, with riveted armour and rear engine. The main armament was the 37mm Škoda A7 gun and was supplemented by two ball-mounted 7.92mm machine guns (one alongside the main gun, the other to the left of the driver’s position). While an effective weapon during the initial campaigns in Poland, France and Russia, the Pz.Kpfw.38(t) was soon Tamiya’s Panzer 38(t) is testimony to the company’s abilities.

regarded as inadequate. Production ceased in 1942, though the chassis and other components continued to be manufactured for a variety of vehicles including the Jagdpanzer 38(t), Flakpanzer 38(t) and two versions of the Marder III (one mounting a German 75mm gun, the other a Soviet 76.2mm gun).

The Kit

Back in 2015, having already produced two versions of the Marder III in 1/48 scale, it made since for Tamiya to release the gun tank version, ‘Panzerkampfwagen 38(t) Ausf.E/F’. Considering the simple design of the tank, I feel Tamiya have done a The model was built virtually out of the box and assembles extremely easily. The detail is sharp and the fit perfect.

splendid job of recreating the characteristic features of this early-war subject. Typical of their current range, the kit combines excellent moulding, crisp detail and positive parts fit. A total of 147 injectionmoulded components are accompanied by a set of poly-caps for the road-wheels, two metal ingots (for those who like to add weight to their model), and decal markings for two vehicles. Tracks are the link-and-length type, and the kit includes a half-figure tank commander that fits onto a base plate inside the open hatch.

welded hull while the M4A1 had a rounded cast hull. Some units preferred the M4A1, believing that rounded surfaces deflected shells better, but in at least one tank battalion, the 73rd, the troops were convinced that the cast armour was inferior to the M4

and avoided using the M4A1 in combat where possible. Most units didn’t document a difference between the two types, although the welded version had a little more interior space. Beginning in January 1944 the M4A1 was manufactured with the

high velocity 76mm gun and featured wet ammunition stowage. One of these M4A1(76)w was the Sherman Duke of the 66th Armored Regiment, 2nd Armored Division, which operated in France in 1944 and took part in Operation Cobra in July,

Hobby Boss’s U.S. M4A1(76) W Medium Tank is one of a range of kits of the M4 produced in 1/48 scale back in 2006. The kit consists of six plastic sprues, a small photoetched fret and vinyl tracks. The main assembly of the tank was done by my friend Ángel Cañas, but I put together the running gear and some other elements such as the stowage.

The figure of the tanker was painted by Fernando Granell Olzsewki. Built from the box, the kit needs a little remedial work. I replaced the barrel with a metal one from RB Models. The wheels had a small step that had to be removed. The transmission cover of the Sherman was bolted to the hull and to detail

it, plasticard strips were used to which some boltheads were inserted. The periscope guards were fashioned from copper wire, while the hull sides were improved with plasticard sheets. I used photoetched parts to detail handles and light protectors.

The gun mantlet was also modified with strips of plasticard along its bottom to give it the same shape as the top. The rear stowage shelf was also detailed with photoetch and a jerrycan was placed in one side of the tank grouser stowage as seen in the reference photos. Finally, I textured the armour by stippling Mr Surfacer 1000 on the surface (photos 1-4).

AMUSING HOBBY VK 7201(K)

Paper Panzer Power T he German arms manufacturer, Krupp of Essen, started work on the design of a super heavy tank in 1941. The new tank was supposed to have 140mm of armour at the front and 100mm of side protection. It would have a five-man crew and be equipped with a 1000hp Daimler-Benz engine with a maximum speed of 44 km/h. Early in 1942, Krupp was engaged to design the Pz.Kpfw. VII Löwe (VK 7201) by using the Tiger-Maus (VK 7001) as a starting point. But, at the end of 1942, the project

was cancelled in favour of the Maus. I have always been interested in these ‘Paper Panzers’, World War II German tank designs that never made it beyond the drawing board, so decided to build a 1/35-scale VK 7201(K) Paper Panzer, characterised by its rear-mounted turret.

Construction

The 1/35 VK 7201(K) model was released by Amusing Hobby in 2014, a follow up to the more conventional version of the tank with an engine

mounted in the rear, which was released two years previously (ref. 35A005). I also used the Voyager Model detail sets (refs. PE35763, VBS0170), the Friulmodel metal tracks (ref. ATL154) and the MJ Miniatures tool clamps (ref. MJEZ35001). To make the painting process easier, the main components of the tank (hull, turret, wheels, tracks) were kept separate almost until the end of the project. I like tanks without mudguards and in the case of VK7201 the tracks are such a prominent feature of the

2

model. I had to do some modification to the hull and scratch build of the mudguard supports on the hull sides to realise my vision (photo 1). The turret was built out-of-thebox except for the side steps and the turned metal Aber barrel (ref. 35L-232) (photo 2). The wheels were kept separate until after the painting stage and the road wheels were assembled with their axles in place, as this made them much easier to handle. The smaller details – exhaust pipes, tow shackles and the like – were similarly

not fixed into place at this time. The construction of the Friul tracks was, as I feared, very time consuming, but the result it worth it as the same effect can simply not be achieved

with the plastic tracks supplied in the kit (photo 3). Before I moved into painting, I dry fitted all the sub-assemblies to confirm there would be no nasty surprises later (photo 4).

The Editor examines Soviet armoured tactics on the Central Front towards the end of the Cold War.

I

n the 1984 film Red Dawn, starring Patrick Swayze, Soviet and Cuban paratroopers launch a surprise invasion of the continental United States, quickly conquering a country unprepared for war. The film spoke to deeply rooted American fears of the Soviet Union, their massed conventional and nuclear arsenals, and the United States’ inability to defend itself at one of the most perilous times of the Cold War. The other great fear in the public imagination, of course, was nuclear war and the previous year, during the annual Able Archer 83 command post exercise, mutual fear and distrust between the Superpowers had brought the world to the brink of Armageddon. For NATO planners in the early 1980s, however, the most frequently discussed and planned for war scenario was a Soviet and Warsaw Pact conventional assault across the Inner German Border (IGB). Using their numerical and technological superiority

in conventional weapons, the Soviets would quickly overwhelm NATO forward defences, giving the Western governments the impossible choice of either capitulation or escalation to a nuclear conflict. This is the first in a series of articles looking at the armies and armoured forces that faced each other across the Central Front during the last decade of the Cold War. This first instalment will look at the modernisation and capabilities of the Soviet forces, and to a lesser extent their Warsaw Pact Treaty (WTO) allies from the mid 1970s to the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989. It will also examine the organisation and tactics of the Soviet armoured spearhead in the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany (GSFG).

Countdown to Armageddon The period from the late 1970s to the mid 1980s was one of the most dangerous of the entire Cold War period. The early 1970s had seen a significant shift in the geopolitical relationship

between the United States and the Soviet Union. Led by Presidents Nixon and Brezhnev, Détente sought to bring the Superpowers further away from the prospect of nuclear war and led to the SALT 1 treaty, signed in May 1972. In June the following year, Brezhnev visited Washington DC in what is usually seen as the high-water mark of superpower cooperation during the Cold War. In 1975, Brezhnev decided to lend his support to the ‘Final Act’ of Détente, the Helsinki Accords, in which both Western and Eastern bloc countries agreed to respect national sovereignty and to refrain from the use of force to settle international conflict. After 1975 Détente began to fall apart. The health of Leonid Brezhnev, the principal driver from the Soviet side, began to decline, while the Americans became wary of an accommodation that they believed – as did the Soviets – would give the USSR time to close the technological and economic gap that existed between the two

superpowers. In April 1976 Marshall Andrei Grechko, the Soviet Minister of Defence, died. Grechko was the architect of the previous Soviet war plan, essentially defensive in nature, that saw nuclear weapons as the first resort in the event of war with the West. He was succeeded by Dimitri Ustinov. Together with the Marshall Nikolai Vasilyevich Ogarkov, he developed a new war plan for the Soviet Union based on the notion of a surprise, ‘standingstart’ attack on the West, and a technological and numerical superiority in conventional weapons. One important aspect of this was the main battle tank. Soviet tank design had developed little during the 1950s and 60s, but in the late 1960s the two rival Soviet tank design facilities, at Kharkiv and Nizhny Tagil, had developed rival designs, the T-64 and the T-72. The T-64 was the more sophisticated and expensive of the two tanks, while the T-72 was simpler and better suited to mass production. They entered service in 1964 and 1969 respectively. Both had traditional diesel engines, but at the same time the smaller www.guidelinepublications.co.uk

During the early 1980s Western governments went to some lengths to convince their publics of the dangerous imbalance in conventional forces between the WTO and NATO. This is from the official NATO Force Comparison report of 1984. (NATO)

Leningrad tank design facility was working on a gas turbine-engined tank. The new tank, the Object 219 as the prototype was known, was fast but wildly impractical. Marshal Grechko had vetoed its introduction because of its high production cost and massive fuel consumption. In August 1976, however, Defence Minister Ustinov accepted the Object 219 into production as the T-80. A tank, powered by what was, in effect, a jet engine epitomised the new military and technological strategy of the USSR. It would guarantee the Soviets a conventional victory on the Central Front. Reaching the Channel Coast within five

days of crossing the IGB, NATO would not have time to formulate a military response and the West would be forced into a humiliating surrender or face nuclear Armageddon. The news of the deployment of the T-64 and T-72 in the late 1970s and the ‘discovery’ of the T-80- the CIA first received photographic evidence of the tank in 1979 – threw Western defence policy makers into a tailspin and was symptomatic of much wider concerns about the modernisation and build of Soviet conventional forces on the Central Front. As early as July 1975 the CIA were expressing concern about the Soviet armoured force,

‘already the world’s largest’, and how it was growing further in size and quality. This concern manifested itself principally in a fear that the new generation of Soviet tanks – the T-64 and T-72 – were better armoured, faster and more deadly than their NATO ‘counterparts, employing advanced technology the West could only dream of.’ In 1978 a British tank officer in British Army of the Rhine told the Daily Mail: ‘With this tank [the T-72], the Soviets have closed the gap. We used to be able to offset the Russian superiority in numbers by the certainty that one Chieftain could knock out four or five Russian tanks. We

cannot make this assumption any longer.’ In October 1979, some three years after it had entered service, CIA analysts made their first reports of a ‘probable T-80’ tank. On 16 March the following year, the story broke in the New York Times, reporting the testimony of intelligence officials before Congress. The T-80, they warned, was equipped with special armour that would make it almost invulnerable to existing – and even planned – NATO anti-tank weapons. The qualitive lead the West had hoped to achieve through the production of its own new tanks and ATGMs had been ‘put in doubt. And the Russians have added to their quantitive superiority’. What the US Army needed ‘in the next “dangerous years” … is a weapon available today “or at least tomorrow.”’ On the central front NATO would be swamped by Soviet tanks, outnumbered by more than two to one, which it could do nothing to stop. Fear of the mysterious T-80 and other secret Soviet weapon systems soon spread through the Western defence press, and it became a commonplace in specialist publications and newspapers to stress the terrifying conventional imbalance on the central front. In the US the debate about the Soviet armoured threat reached new levels in the autumn of 1981 with the publication of Soviet Military Power. Soviet Military Power is one of the most extraordinary publications of the late Cold War. Compiled by the Defense Intelligence Agency and first published in One of the principal ways in which Western analysts learned of new WTO capability were the annual parades held throughout the Soviet Union to mark the anniversaries of the Bolshevik Revolution and defeat of Nazi Germany. The T-64B first appeared in Red Square in May 1985. (James Kinnear)

decisive superiority at the decisive time; surprise and security; combat activeness or maintaining the momentum of the offensive; preservation of combat effectiveness through effective command and control; conformity of the goal or fulfilment of the mission at all costs; and co-ordination of forces through combined arms assault. The Soviets believed that victory was possible through offensive actions and that speed, shock and manoeuvre were the best guarantors of victory. This was as true in the field of theatre-level conventional warfare as it was in the realm of strategic nuclear war. Although the Soviet Union adopted a formal no-first use of nuclear weapons policy in 1982, they planned for and expected to operate in a nuclear battlefield. In 1979 they had wargamed a major invasion of Western Europe which included nuclear strikes against major European cities and strategic targets alongside a huge onslaught by conventional forces that would see WTO forces reach the Pyrenees by the ninth day of the conflict. Significantly, however, this attack was in response to a NATO preemptive nuclear strike against targets in central and eastern Europe. On the Central Front, GSFG was tasked with achieving victory in the case of war through the application of the basic principles of Soviet doctrine and operational art. All its units were Category I, meaning they were maintained at a minimum of 75 per cent of their manpower, usually more, and with a full complement of equipment. The Soviets planned for, but did not intend to pre-emptively use, nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) weapons in their offensive planning in the last decade of the Cold War. However, they believed that NATO would resort to NBC The BTR-70, shown here during a Red Square parade in the mid-1980s, was introduced in increasing numbers to the motor rifle units of GSFG as part of the reforms of the early 1980s. he T-64 tank was designed in the Soviet Union in the early 1960s and manufactured at the Kharkiv tank factory, the design of Alexander Morozov, the man responsible for the design of many of the T-34 later version. In the 1970s and 1980s, the T-64 was, along with the T-72, the most widely used Soviet tank. Approximately 13,000 units were delivered, mostly to units of the Group of Soviet Forces Germany

stationed in the German Democratic Republic. It is considered a milestone among Soviet and Western tanks for its innovations, including its composite armour and its autoloader, although compared to its contemporary, the T-72, it was far more expensive to produce. The T-64 was also never exported nor served in armies outside of the USSR. The T-64A was modified to increase performance by installing a new powerful

Russian manufacturer W-Model has been around for several years, mainly focusing on high-quality 1/72 scale models. Their catalogue contains some unusual, mainly Soviet-era, subjects that no other brand has. The quality of their models has recently allowed them to venture into other scales. This T-64A model is the second 1/48-scale model in their catalogue. I have to say that a few years ago, I built their SA-8 Gecko in

Production of the T-64A began in 1967 and continued until replaced by the T-64B in 1976. The T-64A remained in service and underwent various upgrades throughout the 1970s and 80s and the tank remains in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine today.

Stefan Szymanski builds one of the bestknown guns of the Great War.

Big Bertha

‘B

ig Bertha’ has its origins in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05, where the Japanese 28cm guns were able to destroy the thickest Russian bulwarks. This was noted with great interest in Berlin by the arms manufacturer Krupp, who decided to develop a similarly heavy gun. In 1912, five 42cm mortars were introduced into the German army under the name ‘Gamma Device’. Unfortunately, these 150-ton guns were less than mobile. Ten freight cars were needed to transport each one and a

suitable concrete foundation had to be prepared in advance, taking several days to harden. Finally, it took several days to prepare the gun to fire. A remedy was needed and a 42cm gun with a wheel mount was ordered from Krupp: the Short Marine Gun 14 (M device) or ‘Big Bertha’. Bertha Krupp had assumed sole inheritance of the armaments company in 1906 after the death of her father. In terms of stature, Bertha Krupp is said to have been anything but a heavyweight, but she never objected to the gun being

KRUPP ‘BIG BERTHA’

named after her. By 1913 only two guns had been manufactured, with ten more to follow during the war. The guns’ baptism of fire had to take place at the front, shelling fortifications in Belgium. The guns proved ineffective against the newer reinforced concrete fortresses, but they fared better against older masonry emplacements. ‘Big Bertha’ was also used during the Battle of Verdun, significantly damaging Fort Vaux and de Moulainville and wearing out their barrels in the

process. No replacements were sought as the age of the great gun was over. The ten minutes it took to reload each gun was too long and more numerous lighter guns with a higher rate of fire could do as much or more damage than one Big Bertha. The naval blockade of Germany was also having an effect and each gun cost a million marks (equivalent to around 5,600,000 euros today) to manufacture, with each shell costing around 1,500 marks (around 8,400 euros today). Michał Tafil tackles an Aerosan diorama

1/35

TRUMPETER NKL-6

A Winter Wonderland

O

ne day, when visiting my local model shop, I came across a new kit that immediately caught my attention. The box art showed an impressive

70

looking ski-shod vehicle, the NKL-6 Aerosan, in a wintery scene. After a first look in the box, the idea for my next diorama was born. As I thought more about the project, I discovered several very good photos of this particular Aerosan on the

#MILITARYMODELCRAFTINTERNATIONAL

Internet. I had never tackled an Aerosan before, nor a winter diorama, so this project was going to throw up some new challenges. The kit itself is quite simple. There are relatively few parts, and this isn’t a big model once assembled. There aren’t any tracks or a complex suspension, transmission and chassis to bulk out the box, but what is in the box is of typical Trumpeter quality, cleanly moulded with nice details. The kit contains marking options for two vehicles, both with large red decals. I thought that might be a little overpowering for my winter diorama, so I decided on something

different. From my research, I learnt that these were the first of the Soviet’s Aerosan and theses large vehicles really came into their own during the harsh conditions of the 1939-40 Winter War between the USSR and Finland. The NKL-6 proved invaluable in keeping the hard-pressed Soviet troops supplied and that fact gave me the inspiration for this diorama.

Building the Aerosan

I didn’t come across any issues building this box. It is, if I’m honest, a very simple kit of an equally simple vehicle. I would not hesitate to recommend it to a newcomer to the hobby. The main thing to remember is not to glue to the hull to the floor during

u 2 2 © 0 3 Gu id elin e Pu blic P e b 2 2 G e © 0 3 i l l d u i i n c u P e b 2 2 a © 0 3 Gu id lin e l u i t c i P e b 2 2 G a e © 0 3 i l l d u i i t n c u i P e b o 20 23 G id li e a l u n i t n c u 20 23 G id eli e Pu bli at ion 23 G uid eli ne Pu bli ca ion s 23 G uid eli ne Pu bli ca tion s Li L t n c u i P e b s o i G id li e a m l u n i L t n c u i P e b i s o i G id li e a m l u n ui el e P bl ica tio ns Lim ite ui del ine P ubl ica tio ns Lim ite d de in P ub ic ti ns L d i o i t a e m l l e u n i i L t el ne Pu bl ca io s im ite d in P b ic tio ns Li i d t a e m l e u ic t n L n subtly. I applied a coat of gloss varnish and then applied two filters with thinned Van Dyke Brown oil paint. I removed any excess or where the oil paint had pooled with a makeup stick. I very sparingly added some traces of rust around the metal details and applied some pure white oil paint to add some further depth to the finish on the hull. When the oil paint was thoroughly dry, I sprayed a coat of matt varnish. It was only then I assembled the two halves of the hull. The final part of the Aerosan was to add the glazing. With my winter scene in mind, I wanted to depict some ice on the windows. I simply added some tiny spots of white oil paint in the corner of each and then blended them with a dry brush. In a few areas of the Aerosan I added some residual snow with AK Interactive’s Terrain Snow (AK8011) applied straight from the tub.

A Winter Wonderland

With the Aerosan complete, I made a start on the diorama. The basic dimensions of the piece were determined by cutting a piece of plywood to size. I glued strips along the

WORLD WAR II

assembly to allow you to paint and weather the interior details. Once assembled, I primed the various sub-assemblies of the Aerosan in black and then airbrushed a dark grey as the base colour for the interior. The exterior was, of course, given a good solid coat of white. The engine and interior seats were kept unattached at this stage and painted separately. I built up layers of heavily thinned white paint on the exterior of the Aerosan to give it some interest and a sense of depth. It’s not easy to add modulation as it was important to ensure the hull exterior was obviously white and not a dirty shade of grey. I added a few of the kitsupplied decals, but as most of the Aerosans I saw were relatively unadorned, I kept these to a minimum. The next step was to add some weathering, or rather signs of wear and tear. Crashing through the snow, the Aerosan wouldn’t be covered with mud and dust and all the other weathering effects we modellers love to add to AFVs. Instead, I began the somewhat tedious task of adding lots of tiny scratches on the hull, using various light greys and pure white. The skis were a combination of wood and metal, so I added some brown scratches on those. I began painting the large propeller in various shades of brown and used stencils to airbrush the woodgrain effect onto it. As I said, there are few details on the hull of the Aerosan and it’s important to accentuate the model’s shape

side and decided to use an old dead tree, which I already had in my collection, as the main natural feature of the diorama. To impress on the viewer that this was a frozen lake, not simply a snow-covered field, I decided to create a slope rising from the front of the diorama and an old, derelict jetty at the water’s edge. The slope was created by creating plaster ‘rocks’ in a silicone mould purchased from the Internet over a Styrofoam base. The ‘rocks’ and Styrofoam were covered in

more plaster and then I used Das modelling clay to form the shore. I simply pressed an old stiff brush into the clay to make the impression of sand. To make the scene less uniform and more realistic, I added three different sizes of plaster ‘rocks’ to different parts of the diorama. I started painting the groundwork in the same way as I begin all my models, with a coat of black primer. I then moved to the bottom of the lake, creating the impression that would be seen through the resin. The first coat was a dark brown, to which I added swirls of lighter brown and sand. The rocks were painted in a variety of shades of grey, beginning with dark and then going lighter and ending with a dry brush. At this point I also

COLD WAR

Ilya Yut builds a Soviet era 2S3 Akatsiya.

T

he 2S3 Akatsiya SPG was developed as the Soviet counterpart of NATO’s M109 selfpropelled howitzer, with a 152mm howitzer housed inside a fully rotating turret atop of thinly armoured self-propelled chassis. The same chassis was used in other Soviet designs over the decades. It entered service in early 1970s, and in NATO was known as the M1973 during the Cold War and was produced in huge numbers over the span of several decades. It was an important

component of the Soviet’s modernization programme of their ground forces beginning in the mid-1970s. As with many other Soviet designs, it saw service within other Warsaw Treaty Organisation countries and it is still in use not only in the ongoing war in Ukraine, but also in Africa and the Middle East. As an aside, for some time the D-22 howitzer was produced in the artillery plant located in my hometown Perm, Russia, where I lived until I was 30. By today’s standards the 2S3 is not the most advanced

1

after plants/flowers (Russian humour!) I wouldn’t say that the 2S3 is the sexiest looking piece of equipment and had I not seen many photos with weathering that made me want to build one. Then in 2021 I came across several photos of a Russian artillery exercise, featuring several Akatsiyas with a heavily worn whitewash and some even carrying light blue pixel camouflage patches. I really liked these pictures and using them as inspiration, I thought why not?

2

The base colour was mixed from Gunze Mr Color Lacquers Flat Zinc Chromate (C351) and Russian Green 4BO (C512) lightened with some White. Based on my experience AK Interactive’s Real Colors thinner works well with these paints and it gives a good match to the elusive Russian Green.

system in terms of range and fire control, but it is still good enough for destroying enemy assets. The 2S3 followed the Soviet naming convention of naming its artillery systems. The number ‘2’ stands for the department within the ordnance departments; the letter ‘S’, samokhodnaya or self-propelled (as opposed to ‘B’ for buksiruyemaya/towed”) piece; and 3, the running number within the nomenclature Akatsiya translates to shrub or tree, as artillery systems were named

ather than offering yet another ‘potted history’ of the Pz.Kpfw. VI Tiger I (arguably the bestdocumented tank of World War II), I decided to begin my article with some background on this particular example, chiefly because it does have some interesting and unique features. ‘S02’ was a Januaryproduction Befehls (or command) Tiger. Key distinguishing features include: l Werkstat-made rear

mudflaps l stern antenna stowage tube l early-pattern Feifel air cleaners l August ’42 version of external starter-guide plate l no mounting brackets for toolbox (introduced in December ’42) l no brackets for startercrank shaft (a later addition) l no muffler heatshields (though mounting studs are present) l no circular shields above flapper outlets

1

Further features include the opening for a KFF2 periscope, above the driver’s vision Klappe (a detail deleted in

2

To build ‘S02’ vintage you must remove the hatch stoppers. I also removed the moulded-on handles.

84

The January-pattern turret also displays some specific details, including: l remains of smoke-grenade launchers l early-pattern escape hatch l early-pattern stowage bin l early-pattern nonreinforced binocular-sight mantlet (with co-axial machine gun) l no loader’s periscope l no spare-track hangers

February 1943); and four S-mine launchers, typical of a Befehlswagen (regular tanks carried six). Twenty-nine tigers were produced in January of 1943, eight of which went to 8/SS. Pz. Regt. 2, ‘Das Reich’. Before this two Tigers, produced in December of 1942, had been assigned to the regiment. These were the first 10 Tigers assigned to ‘Das Reich’, and at least two of these, ‘800’ and ‘801’ were Befehlswagens. Now comes the fun part. Through discussions of surviving photographs between David Byrden and myself we have determined that ‘S02’ (and I surmise that ‘S01’ had the same arrangement), had a unique antenna set up for a Befehlswagen. It seems the Sternantenna was mounted

It also had the smoke grenade launchers removed. This is very easy to replicate with strip stock.

ast month’s Armour in Profile on the Leopard 2 prompted me to finish the build of a kit that I’d had lurking around the bench for a year or so. Rye Field Model’s Leopard 2A6M CAN was released in 2021 and was one of the kits of that year. When I wrote my short history and modelling guide to the Leopard 2 (Leopard 2: NATO’s First Line of Defence 1979-2020

(Tankcraft 28)) back in 2020 the recent Border Model kit, released the previous year, was undoubtedly the best Leopard 2 kit available in 1/35 scale. Upon opening the box of this newly tooled kit, it was immediately apparent that Rye Field Model’s Leopard 2 had knocked it off the top spot.

manufacturers in 2015, primarily for their World War II German tanks and assault guns. They’ve produced a few more modern kits, such as the M55A1 Sheridan, but the Leopard 2 marked a radical departure into a subject already available in plastic from Italeri, Tamiya, Hobby Boss and, most recently, Border Model. The kit has eleven sprues of crisply moulded dark yellow plastic, a clear sprue, a vinyl sprue, three sprues including individual track links, a length of cord for the tow cable, a small sheet of photoetch and a separate turret and upper hull. Construction begins, conventionally enough, with the lower hull. You’ll need to open the holes in the lower hull plate (F3) to fit the belly armour and in the rear plate (B6) to fit the bar armour. The kit comes with working torsion bar suspension, very useful for the diorama modeller, and a track idler that can have its position moved to correctly tension the track (more on this later). The road wheels are superb and come with poly caps – why don’t all manufacturers use? – which allow you to slip the wheels on

The complete lower hull. Note the additional belly armour, characteristic of the Leopard 2A6M. Assembly of the individual track links is assisted by the provision of a jig, allowing you to assemble seven links at a time. The finished tracks are completely articulated, if a little stiff. As the upper run of tracks is hidden, I didn’t assemble the required 166 links. You can if you like, of course! Rye Field Model’s expertise in kit design and injection moulding is evident from the large single moulding of the turret. The assembled model with the bar armour left off to facilitate painting.

and off the suspension arms should you wish to assist in painting and weathering. The tracks are superb. 83 links are required for each side if you wish to assemble the full run. There is no need to do this to be honest as the top run of tracks will be hidden by the side skirts and I assembled just enough to run round the drive sprocket and

The Editor reports from Guideline Publications’ own model show.

O

n Sunday, 4 December 2022 the Guideline Publications’ team hosted the annual London Plastic Modeller Show at its usual venue, the Haverstock School in north London. The show, coming the day after the London Toy Soldier Show at the same venue, is organised around our various modelling magazines and attracted a good number of club stands and traders. Everything from the IPMS Gunpla and Mech Special Interest Group to the Miniature Armoured Fighting

Vehicle Association was represented in some way and the competition tables were well supported, especially by diorama and figure modellers. There were some fantastic examples of modelling on display, including Raf Sikorski’s fabulous scratchbuilt Tsar Tank. Here are some examples of the AFV and diorama models on display. On Saturday, 25 March 2023 Guideline Publications is hosting its Spring Model Show, which promises to be our biggest event yet, so I’ll look forward to seeing you there.

A ROUNDUP OF THE LATEST MILITARY TITLES

The Russian S-300 and S-400 Missile Systems (New Vanguard 315)

he S-300 air-defence missile system is certainly one of the best-known weapons systems in service day, infamous for the indiscriminate way it has been employed as a ballistic missile to spread terror and destruction on Ukraine’s civilian population during Russia’s ongoing criminal assault on its neighbour. Steve Zaloga’s latest title for Osprey’s New Vanguard series provides an expert account of the development, role, and capabilities of the S-300 and S-400 air defence missile systems, key strategic weapons in Putin’s Russia. Few modern missile systems have had such significance as the S-300 family. Highly regarded technically, Russia’s most powerful air-defence systems have been a major strategic asset to the country, exported to major powers around the world, and are a key weapon in many international hotspots and in recent wars. Zaloga assesses and analyses them in the typical New Vanguard format He explains that the S-300 is, in

fact, three systems: the S-300P, designed as a replacement for older Soviet strategic SAM systems, the S-300V, developed to defend against Pershing ballistic missiles, and the S-300F, designed for ship defence. He also considers the supplementary S-350 system and the new-generation S-400 system, deployed in Syria and sold to both China and Turkey. An assessment of the latest S-500 system, designed to counter ballistic missiles and hypersonic cruise missiles, is also provided. The book is well illustrated, and Felipe Rodriguez’s excellent artwork really adds value here. The book, however, exposes some of the dangers of writing about contemporary weapons systems. As Zaloga observes, whatever the paper capabilities of a system like the S-300, more important is the quality of the crew, the tactics used and the military culture in which it is employed. In these crucial respects, in Russian hands the S-300 has been shown wanting in the war in Ukraine and

1943, and Rostov-on-Don also four times between November 1941 and February 1943. In this book, Chris McNab examines the fighting men of the Red Army and the Waffen-SS who clashed in three battles – one for Rostov (July 1942) and two

for Kharkov (February–March and August). He clearly explains the key differences between these two opponents – training, tactics, weaponry, ideology and motivation – and examines how these differences played out in the three engagements, which ranged

and drone attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. A very relevant title and recommended to all students of contemporary conflict and modellers wanting to tackle the Trumpeter or Modelcollect kits of this important weapons system.

from open-terrain combined-arms battles to close-quarters street fighting in major urban zones. The text is complemented by specially commissioned artwork and mapping and carefully chosen archive photographs. The book examines in detail the three key engagements and explains the steady improvement of the Red Army’s operational leadership and combat effectiveness. The rediscovery of the doctrine of ‘Deep Battle’ and the integration of the various arms of the Red Army helped overcome the better equipment and training of the Germans at a unit level and led to the ultimate, if hideously costly, Soviet victory on the Eastern Front. This is an interesting read, well written and nicely illustrated with archival photographs and some evocative artwork by Johnny Shumate. Highly recommended. www.guidelinepublications.co.uk

almost a week the Germans were able to make good ground, and the glory days of 1940 beckoned as they crushed all resistances before them, often with extreme cruelty. On Christmas Eve, the Germans had lost their initial advantage, the skies cleared and air support returned. For the next three weeks the battle hung in the balance. For the Americans the Battle of the Bulge would be the deadliest single battle of World War II. The modelling section of this book looks at the King Tiger and the

M18 Hellcat and the Me262 and P-47. The history is accessible and serves as a good introduction. The modelling section is more basic but serves as a good introduction to people new to the hobby. The M18 Hellcat section is a little unfortunate as it was obviously written just before the release of the new Tamiya kit, which doesn’t get a mention. There is a nice build, however, of the Academy kit, recently re-released by Airfix. I like this format and they provide an accessible introduction to

particular campaigns. I just wish the modelling section was stronger and had better photos of the models. Pen & Sword books are available from all good bookshops (www. pen-and-sword.co.uk). www.guidelinepublications.co.uk

alongside carefully chosen archive photographs, this study charts the history and appearance of the Soviet Union’s naval infantry, from the October Revolution to the end of the Soviet era. Although Russian naval infantry achieved fame during the October Revolution they were quickly disbanded, only being re-established in 1939. Following the Axis invasion of 1941 some 500,000 Soviet Navy personnel served on land, fighting in the defence of Leningrad, Odessa and Sevastopol and the recapture of the Crimea in 1943–44. Soviet naval troops also participated in the invasion of Manchuria in 1945, with the arm emerging as one of the stalwarts of the Great Patriotic War. During the Cold War era the Soviet Union developed an amphibious assault capability that had a vital strategic role: to capture an aggressor’s geographical exits to the oceans and thereby forestall threats to Soviet submarine bases. Naval infantry forces could deploy a wealth of firepower assets, including APCs, main battle tanks and multiple-launch rocket systems, while the use of amphibious ships, hovercraft and helicopters aided their rapid deployment, even amid ice-bound terrain in the Arctic. All these developments are described and illustrated in absorbing detail in this study. The collapse of the Soviet Union saw the Naval Infantry increasingly deployed as elite regular infantry units, much like the airborne units, and this role they have continued to play
