Nota cultural The Hispanic family The nucleus of Hispanic culture is the family. Every type of celebration centers around it. All members of the family from grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins to in-laws attend all the events that concern the family. Age is respected and is regarded as wisdom. It is unthinkable to place the older relatives in an old age home, as it is expected that one of the younger members take them into their home. It is not uncommon for the abuelito or abuelita or even the suegro or suegra to live with one of the children. The Hispanic family also includes very close friends and the children refer to the parents’ closest friends as tío or tía. They are not blood relatives but are very dear to the family. Close family ties are evidenced by the fact that there are special names for the

Not only do they help with taking care of their grandchildren, but they also have a lot of influence in raising and educating them. As the children grow older, they seek the approval of their grandparents concerning their friends and novio or novia. They now associate the age of the grandparents with knowledge and wisdom and listen to their advice. The grandparents also are the conveyers of the family history, of the roots of the family. This makes the grandchildren proud of their background and makes them more confident. They relate to the grandchildren what their parents were like as children. This can make the children see their parents as more ‘human’. Of course, the grandchildren are also a source of comfort and pride for their grandparents.
