ON JUNE

Your Community events and activities

I love cycling as a concept: freewheeling along, wind in my hair, leaving no footprint on the planet... But every time I’ve been in the saddle, I’ve ended up a sweaty, sweary mess. Maybe this month’s bike special will convert me? Same with cricket. Despite long summers with an especially batty ex, I've never been bowled over (something I have in common with Queen Elizabeth, I now know). ut chatting to “Beefy” this month has piqued my interest. You might even find me tuning into The Ashes, G&T in hand! Your local cricket club will be busy enjoying the longer evenings this month. June also heralds the start of Pride celebrations – join our party online! ˜˜˜ On Wednesday, 28th June, The Arts Society Camberley invites you a talk by one of the world's leading landscape photographers. At 1.30pm for 2pm at High Cross Church in Camberley, Charlie Waite will explore the challenge faced in all visual arts: the relationship between the making of an image and the way in which it is perceived by the viewer. An essential element of this is the extraordinary double act of the eye and the brain, made up of visual references and intellectual interpretation. Charlie will use 60 of his own images in a visual feast. For details please visit theartssocietycamberley.org.uk or email membership.tascamberley@gmail. com. All are welcome but, as a charity, the team kindly request a small donation at the door from visitors, to help cover expenses.

˜˜˜ My local star of the month is the wonderful Paul Mayhew-Archer whose one-man show The Incurable Optimist you can enjoy on Friday, 9th June, 7.15-9.15pm at Fleet's Church on the Heath near Morrisons. Paul is a writer, best known for his work on The Vicar of Dibley... and he also has Parkinson’s. Your local support group of Parkinsons UK will host Paul's inspiring show about the therapeutic power of comedy, his career in comedy and the funny side of Parkinson’s (yes, there is one!). Please see our article & also visit parkinsons-farnborough.org.uk ˜˜˜ The Farnborough Concert Band of the Royal British Legion invite you to join their Celebration of Summer at the Mytchett Community Centre, GU16 6AA, on Saturday, 3rd June at 7pm. The band will play an exciting programme of music including the Lion King, Les Mis and make way for The Cowboys! For this and other highlights or tickets (free for under16s) visit farnboroughconcertband.org or call ...Continued on page 6.

Outdoors icture the scene – the sun’s shining, the drinks are flowing, the BBQ’s heating up, your friends are round and you’re all having a good time. Sound like the ideal afternoon in your garden, but how to achieve this? Enjoyment of our gardens has increased over the three years since we found ourselves spending more time there - we’re taking greater pride in them and making them a more welcoming place for guests. Sarah Squire, Chairman of Squire’s Garden Centres with branches across Surrey, said: “More people than ever are taking up gardening and experiencing the benefits to their wellbeing of being outdoors, whether it is to enjoy plants and nature or create an outside room as an extension of the home. “The garden offers a sanctuary and a reliable constant for people – a scene that changes with each season right on one’s own doorstep and that can be enhanced in so many ways. Making part of the garden another room, accessorised with furniture and somewhere to entertain, is a great investment, creating a special space for friends and family.” Al fresco ideas and all your gardening needs at www.squiresgardencentres.co.uk

Dining in the open air is one of life’s simple pleasures, whether for a sarnie or full-on feast there’s nothing like eating al fresco to lift your spirits

is in! Outdoor living specialists Outashade have designers and craftsmen to create your luxury outdoor entertaining space. With a passion for all things al fresco, they specialise in outdoor kitchens, bars, dining and relaxation areas with all-weather pergolas, awnings and verandas to suit all tastes and requirements that you’ll be proud of for many years to come; visit outashade.com

An outdoor kitchen from Outashade

The essential item for dining al fresco is something to cook on with a wide range of grills and kitchen barbecues available which don’t just limit you to “slapping a burger on the barbie”. You may also want to consider electricity, plumbing and other utilities, a must have if you’re going full-on kitchen complete with sink. Again depending on your space you may also want to add in cabinets and drawers to create a full-on kitchen in your garden. R&A | 17

is in!

If you do hanker for that “man / fire” thing and just can’t be parted from your barbie then these trends for 2023 from Traegar, makers of wood pellet BBQs, are worth considering: • Cheaper/different cuts of meat will feature heavily as people want better value for money with the cost of living crisis • Mexican food such as tacos and easy one pot recipes like Goulash or stews are great alternatives • Smoking food and cooking low and slow are going to be big trends this year. This method of cooking is definitely becoming more popular in the UK with dishes such as smoked pulled pork, ribs and wings • More and more foods are getting “smashed”. It started with the avocado, then we had burgers last season….Look out for smashed potatoes coming next... • More plant based and gluten free products are expected to make an appearance on the grill as health comes to the fore • Batch cooking will return and with the mindset of healthy meal planning and reducing food waste More inspiration for your BBQ can be found at Smoke and Fire Festival at Ascot Racecourse, 18 | JUNE 2023

August 5th and 6th. In just four years, the festival, one of four around the country, has established itself as the largest BBQ and outdoor cooking fest in the UK. It’s a celebration of the art of cooking with smoke and fire and it’s for a good cause too, raising funds for the Air Ambulance charity. Each festival will showcase top BBQ and outdoor cooking heroes, competitions, fabulous pop-up restaurants, two live music stages, award-winning street food, BBQ and outdoor cooking equipment demonstrations, kids’ entertainment, and a mini real ale and cider festival. To find out more and book tickets visit smokeandfirefestival.com/ascot-racecourse/ As the phrase ‘al fresco’ is borrowed from Italian, it would be remiss not to consider pizza ovens as an alternative cooking choice making restaurant-quality pizza possible in your own garden – tossing and turning the dough in the air optional. There are several types to choose from to suit all budgets – freestanding, portable, indoor and BBQ top pizza ovens, most come with useful accessories and can be used in any size garden, the toughest choice will be which toppings you choose! Any outdoor entertaining in this country always comes with the caveat of the weather making shelter of some kind a necessity so how about a luxury wooden gazebo or insulated garden room? Crown Pavilions offer contemporary structures that are a unique reflection of you, to make the most of your outdoor space – all year round. Classic designs, bespoke luxury buildings and modern garden rooms all combine to offer high-end style with functionality. Find out more and browse the gallery at crownpavilions.com You wouldn’t want the beer and wine getting warm so how about a fridge or bar? Converted garden sheds, simpler wall-mounted pull down bars or in an effort to recreate that holiday vibe, perhaps a tropical-looking tiki bar.

CYCL IN G

Cycling is environmentally friendly, good exercise, offers the chance to enjoy the countryside and doesn’t have to be expensive – so what are you waiting for - get on your bike and pedal!

rom penny farthings to electric bikes, cycling has always been a popular pastime – good for you and good for the environment - so there can be no better time to get out on your bike than during Bike Week this month. June 5th to 11th marks the 100th annual Bike Week celebrating a century of everyday cycling for everyone. The health and green benefits are well known. This year to further peddle those, Bike Week 100 is all about workplace cycling – whether that’s organising an event or simply cycling rather than driving to work. Guildford based Cycling UK, the organisation behind Bike Week, has set a series of challenges at cyclinguk.org/bikeweek/100challenges – burn 100 calories by bike, save £100 by bike and cover 100 miles by bike. The choice is yours, but of course having some stunning scenery in which to cycle is always a bonus, fortunately in our part of the world we are spoilt for choice! Follow in the footsteps or tyre tracks of Olympic cyclists and take to Box Hill, the scenic 20 | JUNE 2023

route through the Surrey Hills is a mixture of A and B roads and country tracks. Picturesque Chinthurst Hill in Guildford is perfect for family outings, hop aboard your bikes and drink in the beauty of the woodland complete with its quirky folly. Why not stop off on the way and make a day of it? The Green Flag award-winning site of Frensham Ponds has a cycling spot which is perfect for shorter outings so provides the ideal family jaunt into the countryside. Nearby Farnham Park is another spot suitable for families to take to their bikes and enjoy a trip in nature. In the same part of the world, Alice Holt Forest is a wonderful opportunity for natural cycling. Travel through ancient mighty oaks as well as wildflower rich open spaces during your cycle. Trails are open to enjoy with your own bikes or they can be hired here. The three-mile-long Family Cycling Trail starts with the opportunity to enjoy some fabulous freewheeling on the downhill section. Take in a medieval castle on your route as you cycle the loop around Guildford Castle and Chantry Wood. The 6.8km trail is well kept and while popular still offers the chance for some peace and quiet. Chobham Place Woods, Blackwater Park and Virginia Water lake should also go on your cycling ‘must do’ list. Here you’ll be able

to spot ancient monuments and a stunning ornamental cascade waterfall as well as a 100 foot totem pole, with 10 mystical totem characters. Neighbouring Hampshire invites you to try Abbotstone Down, Alresford where the route will take you through rolling chalk hills and bluebell woods or how about making tracks through Chawton Park Wood to Bentworth village on the 10-mile trail easily accessible from Alton or Four Marks. Enjoy more of a challenge from Alice Holt Forest along bridleways and roads through Bordon to Oakhanger and for hardened cyclists there’s one of the hardest trails in the county to the north of Petersfield where you can embark on some challenging climbs through rewarding scenery - not for the faint-hearted. Serious cyclists may want to put their foot on the pedal and take on the challenge of the Surrey Tour on September 30th at Cranleigh Showground. The short route (!) is a mere 88km with longer options of 120 and 160 on the table too. Whichever you choose you’ll cycle through amazing countryside and in addition to a medal at the end there’ll be a much-needed beer and how about a slice of well-deserved pizza to refuel afterwards. Bikes, like anything else you treasure, require some TLC from time to time and that’s where organisations such as Bike Project Surrey come in. The charity which has a workshop at Guildford College and a second at Brooklands College will teach you how to look after and service your bike and gain skills necessary for its maintenance. Paid and volunteer mechanics will help you make the most of your bike to prolong its life and help protect

the environment. They will service, fix and customise your bike using recycled or new parts where necessary to help keep it on the road or track. One of the things that makes Bike Project Surrey so great is that not only will they help get your bike shipshape they are also giving opportunities to those who may have missed out on learning in the past. Many students go to them for work experience, as can NEETs who will have the chance to gain a recognised qualification. If you’re after a new bike, they have refurbished ones for sale and if you’ve an unwanted one or one children have outgrown then why not donate it? To find out more about their work and how you can get involved visit bikeprojectsurrey.org/wp/ Cycling is not just about two wheels, Wheels for All offers all ability cycling through its fleet of adapted bikes, trikes, quads, recumbents and side by side helping to make cycling an all-inclusive activity. It embraces disabled people and those who may not otherwise be able to enjoy the fun and freedom of cycling. Wheels for All Woking sessions are based at the athletics track at Woking Sportsbox. waiting for my knee op. I’ve always been a bit sceptical about these sort of things but I can say, hand-on-heart, that this works. It got me through six months. I’ve passed it on to friends, lots of ex-sportsmen. Proof is in the pudding!”

Cricket legend, member of the House of Lords, dad & grandad Ian Botham, 67, chats about sport, family, food & more

Hello... Lord Botham? Ian..? “You can call me Beefy, everyone does.” Q. Who was your sporting hero growing up? “Jack Nicklaus. He’s still right up there, and I’ve met him a few times. Perfect gentleman, lovely man.” Q. How did the charity Bloodwise begin? “I broke my metatarsal in 1977. The doctor took me through the children’s ward where children had tubes sticking out of them, legs raised in plaster and four lads sat round a table playing Monopoly. I asked the doc: are they visitors? He said ‘no they’ve got leukaemia – cancer of the blood – and there’s every chance they won’t be around by the time your foot’s fixed’. Bloodwise grew into a family charity, and has raised millions; I’ve heard numbers from £30m to £100 million. When we did the walk in 1985/6 there was a 20% chance of survival for children with the most common form of leukaemia. Before Covid that figure was 95%. We built a lab outside Glasgow and it’s the scientists who deserve the pats on the back because that’s miraculous.” Q. How did you discover EthicaCBD Sports Gel? “Thanks to my son Liam. I was in agony 24 | JUNE 2023

Q. What are England’s chances in The Ashes? “The Aussies coming straight to it, with no warm-up is fatal. I fancy England – strongly.” Q. Do you love ‘Baz ball’? “Yes, it’s exciting! Knowing Brendan as I do and Ben [Stokes], a Durham boy, it’s just what test cricket needs.” Q. What’s your favourite golf course? “Australia has great courses on the ‘Fan Belt’: but don’t go too deep into the rough because they have snakes which encourage you to hit down the middle! New Zealand’s south island has some of the most attractive because of the topography, the mountains. But it has to be St Andrews.” Q. How was it meeting Her Majesty? “Yes I was lucky enough to meet The Queen a few times, including for my knighthood. She said ‘well, I’m not very fond of cricket’. We just laughed and chatted about the charity. She’s a remarkable woman who will never be replaced.” Q. What do you love to eat / not eat? “There’s not much I don’t like... except potato! I love Indian food, and Sri Lankan which is even hotter, with lots of seafood, which I love. I’m fond of my barbecue; I had great training Down Under. I’ll grill Dover sole, venison, beef, pork, anything!” Q. Do you love being a grandad? “Well as I’ve said before – and my family agree – I probably wasn’t the best father because I was so focused on cricket. You can’t achieve that sort of level without sacrifices and it’s always the family who ‘cop it’ – a good Australian expression, there! But I’m certainly the best grandad in the world... look, this cup I’m drinking from even says it!” Q. What’s your favourite wine? “I make my own which I’m very proud of. We have two English wines produced down in Kent. It gets good reviews; check it out!” bothamwines.com Q. If you could make one wish for the world, what would it be? “Same as most people’s: peace. Forget all the ifs and buts, let’s draw a line under it now – war is such a waste of life.”  Full Beefy Q&A at roundandabout.co.uk

magical mobility

gel

EthicaCBD spent two years developing the complex formula combining CBD and CBG with naturally therapeutic botanicals to produce their award-winning Sports Gel an Botham has made his second miraculous comeback since Headingley 1981, and it’s all thanks to this Sports Gel.

July 2022, when Ian Botham was at his least mobile, his son Liam sent him a tube of EthicaCBD Sports Gel and “three weeks later, he was walking around Sunningdale” (Liam Botham). In September 2022 he returned to competitive golfing, playing three rounds at the Dunhill Links. Prior to receiving the Gel, Sir Ian had not walked a course for over two years.

“This magical stuff should be called a Mobility Gel, rather than a Sports Gel” EthicaCBD is a Cornish brand, based in the seaside town of Bude. Sean Jack at HPT Sports in Bude, is seeing the benefits of the Sports Gel as both a stockist and a consumer. He believes the product should be called something else other than a ‘Sports Gel’, because it’s helping a wide variety of customers with their aches and pains - not just sporty types. Sean personally uses the Gel in the mornings to help with the crooked neck he wakes up with, and his best customer is in fact his mum, who’s seeing notable daily benefits using the gel on her joints. Following glowing reviews from a spectrum of customers, and after receiving compelling testimonials from Ian Botham and other sporting icons like Rugby Union referee Nigel Owens and former Southampton ace Matt

Le Tissier, it’s become clear that EthicaCBD underestimated how powerful this formula would be for helping 50+ individuals improve their mobility. It’s so much more than a sports gel, and as Ian quite rightly says: “People should use it. If they need it, use it.” After all, aches and pains certainly don’t discriminate.

“Let’s get the world moving again. It’s only natural”

- Ruarri Spurgeon, Director of EthicaCBD

“Sometimes you can do all the talking in the world, but when it comes down to it, it’s gotta work… and this really works” - Sir Ian Botham

Who are EthicaCBD? EthicaCBD do everything they can to support people and planet, so it’s a delight to see them making a global impact, earning a win at the World CBD Awards for their cosmetic products. As the name says, EthicaCBD have gone to great lengths to ensure every aspect of their business is as ethical as possible. They’re known for creating “the highest quality ethical CBD for people & planet”, so every decision they make holds customer wellbeing and environmental protection as a priority. Parkinson’s positivity

Comedy writer Paul Mayhew-Archer tells us about his show Incurable Optimist on 9th June leven years ago I was chatting to a friend at the BBC and I mentioned my handwriting was getting smaller... “Ah,” he said, “I don’t want to worry you but I think you might have Parkinson’s.” What he’d have said if he had wanted to worry me I don’t know, but worried I was. I was 58 and I’d been looking forward to taking things more slowly... but not because I had incurable brain damage. Parkinson’s Disease is caused by a lack of dopamine, the chemical the brain uses to send messages to the rest of the body. So some messages don’t get through. It can easily take me 15 minutes to get my jumper on, what with struggling

to get my arms through sleeves, shoving my head through the top and tugging it down at the back. The other day I’d just managed it when my wife came in. “Oh no, not that jumper,” she said and whipped it off. People with Parkinson’s find different ways of managing the condition, and because of my background in comedy I try to focus

on the funny side. Which brings me to my one-man show. I used to co-write The Vicar of Dibley and one of my Parkinson’s symptoms is excessive drooling. So I thought I’d call the show From Dibley to Dribbly – until my wife vetoed that. That’s why it’s called Incurable Optimist. It is partly about my career in comedy and how, for example, I’ve had the great fortune to write for two of the funniest and sauciest women in the world: French and Dench; it’s also about my family; and finally, it’s about serious illness and how we need to give ourselves permission to laugh.
