CANADIAN LIVING JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023 | 3 For many of us, it doesn’t take long for winter weariness to set in after the holiday hustle is over. As soon as the new year rings in, it seems, the January blues and February blahs quickly follow. %XWPD\EHZHVKRXOGORRNDWLWGL̆HUHQWO\$IWHUDOO part of what we love about our country is its four distinct seasons, so let’s give a nod to a few special things we love about this one. HOT CHOCOLATE AND SOUPS. Each season has its own culinary hallmarks, like fall’s apple pies and spring’s fresh asparagus. Winter is the time for warming drinks (like our cover star this issue) and hearty soups (check out our “Winter Warmers” story on page 78). ANIMAL TRACKS IN THE SNOW. Spotting the trails of bunnies, foxes and deer makes a cold-weather nature walk worthwhile. (Don’t forget to dress appropriately—our story “Keeping It Cozy” on page 26 features the new year’s best chic and comfy fashions.) SNOW DAYS! Whether you spend this happy surprise hibernating inside with a good book or building snow people in the yard, the reality is that there’s DORWWREHVDLGIRUDJXLOWIUHHGD\R̆ THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF THE COLD. Yup, they exist, and include thinking more clearly and sleeping better. PROTECTION FOR OUR PLANTS. Snow provides a blanket for our gardens, allowing plants to lie dormant and store energy for spring, while frosty temps can help control insect populations and keep soil healthy. FLICKERS OF CANDLELIGHT AND CRACKLING FIRES. There’s nothing that matches the happy serenity of an evening spent in their warming glow. FLANNEL SHEETS. The ultimate comfort, like being wrapped in a hug all night long. THE OPPORTUNITY TO REFLECT. The blank slate of a brand new year says there are endless possibilities in store. Be inspired to adopt some good and meaningful habits in our “Fresh Starts” story on page 42. THE HUSH THAT COMES AT DUSK DURING A QUIET SNOWFALL. We’re not talking about a major blowout of a VWRUPEXWWKRVHPRPHQWVZKHQELJIDWÀDNHVGULIW straight down and land on our noses and tongues. As you read through this issue and all its wintryJRRGFRQWHQWZHEHW\RX¶OO¿QGPRUHWRORYHDERXW this underrated time of year. Here’s to the season! [email protected] facebook.com/canadianliving twitter.com/canadianliving instagram.com/canadianliving from the editors These first days of 2023 are a perfect time to plan a bit of a decor refresh. A new coat of paint in an on-trend colour like teal could be just the ticket. Check out more of the year’s best shades in our “A Matter of Colour” story on page 52. 5 SEW IT GOES Released this past October, textile designer Lotta Jansdotter’s book Everyday Patterns: Easy-Sew Pieces to Mix and Match is the ultimate guide to creating customizable pieces for a flexible wardrobe. And in these days of high inflation and excess clothing waste, this couldn’t have come at a better time. The book includes garment patterns for clothing essentials (skirt, shirt, shirt dress, tunic, pants, jacket, tote bag and more) that boast modern Scandinavian style, as well as Jansdotter’s ideas for personalization of hems, trim, pockets and sleeves, so each item in your closet reflects a truly unique you. We’re so on board with that! EVERYDAY PATTERNS: EASY-SEW PIECES TO MIX AND MATCH (Abrams) by Lotta Jansdotter, $38. KNOW WHAT I MEAN, JELLY BEAN? 18 | CANADIAN LIVING JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023 scents FASHION&BEAUTY fragrance Sixth The perfect fragrance isn’t always easy to choose, and with so many options, how can you narrow it down to just one? Here are some pro tips and exciting new arrivals you’re sure to adore. TEXT CHRISTINA ZISKO, WITH FILES FROM JESSICA DOSTIE. PHOTOGRAPHY, BRUNO PETROZZA/C 1.Narrow down your options by scent family. Most of us have one or two olfactory families that we gravitate to more than the others. The easiest way to reveal yours is to take a look at the scents you already own to see if they skew more fruity, woody, or something else. If you’re just starting your perfume collection, consider the types of candles you love, or that particular shower gel scent you can’t get enough of. 2.Choose a fragrance concentration based on how strong and long-lasting you like your scent. Do you prefer a stronger perfume with longevity or a lighter fragrance that’s more subtle? Eau de parfum tends to have a concentration between 15 to 20 percent, with a staying power of up to eight hours. Eau de toilette fragrances have a lower concentration, about five to 15 percent, and tend to last from three to six hours. 3. Take your time while shopping. Choosing a perfume by the first sniff isn’t always the best idea because you’re only smelling the top notes, which start to fade after about 10 minutes. Instead, after you choose a few potential candidates, smell them on the tester, then let the scent develop for a few hours. This will allow the fragrance’s heart and base notes to come through, giving you the scent’s true aroma and revealing if it’s truly for you. Smell of success Walk down any department store perfume aisle and you’ll find row after row of scents created by fashion designers, small niche companies and even the newest up-andcoming singer or influencer. There are so many options, and it’s easy to become overwhelmed, but with these tips, you’ll discover your signature scent in no time.

CANADIAN LIVING JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023 | 19 1 3 4. Don’t be afraid to ask for a sample to take home. Most retailers are happy to provide small tester bottles so you can be sure you’re making the right decision. Fragrances tend to smell different on each person due to individual body chemistry, skin pH and skin type. Because perfumes tend to be more expensive than other cosmetics, testing one out on your skin for a few days allows you to see how the notes develop on you before you commit to purchasing a full bottle. 5. Avoid falling into the trap of trends. While fragrance trends are great for getting some inspiration, your own nose is the best tool you have to choose your next signature scent. A perfume may be labelled a “bestseller,” but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’ll be your new favourite. Keep an open mind: Just because a light fragrance is described as “summery” on the package doesn’t mean it has to be reserved for only one season. The world of perfumery is subjective, so be sure to trust your instincts! EVERYDAY CLASSICS BY OPTING FOR A FRAGRANCE CREATED BY ONE OF THESE ICONIC EUROPEAN PERFUMERS, YOU CAN’T GO WRONG! 22 | CANADIAN LIVING JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023 tired eyes FASHION&BEAUTY like a pro bye-bye Morning routine Adopting an energizing morning routine can help combat the look of tired eyes. After waking up, start your day with a glass of water, followed by a walk in the fresh air or a meditation session, then a cool shower. Next, do some light lymphatic drainage in the form of a facial massage. Using your fingers or a specially designed tool, gently massage the eye contour outward from the inner corner of the eyes toward the top of the ear. You can also stimulate the eye area by tapping with your fingertips to encourage circulation. Finally, apply your eye cream or gel on clean skin by patting it on gently with your ring finger—no harsh rubbing! What causes tired-looking eyes? The eye area, where the skin is about four times thinner than on the rest of the face, tends to highlight not only lack of sleep, but also stress and dehydration. The appearance of dark circles, often caused by dilated blood vessels, or puffiness caused by fluid retention are classic signs. However, there can be a range of causes for these woes, both internal and external, so if you have any specific concerns, don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor about them. If dark circles and puffy lids are the first things to greet you in the mirror each morning, there’s help. Try adopting a few new routines to help wake up the eye area, and you’ll be looking fresh as a daisy. TEXT JESSICA DOSTIE PHOTOGRAPHY, SHUTTERSTOCK/E e

Peptide Eye Cream, $55, sephora.ca. Our product picks Evening routine Before going to bed, always wash your face, removing all traces of makeup. Leaving your cosmetics on overnight can irritate the delicate eye area and prevent your nighttime products from absorbing into the skin properly. Repeat the self-massage ritual for lymphatic drainage and follow with your favourite eye contour treatment. A good night’s sleep always helps the skin look fresher and more awake in the morning, so opt for a calm activity, like reading or yoga, which can help you wind down and prepare for a restful sleep. PRO TIP “Cold temperatures have been proven to depuff the eye contour by decreasing inflammation and constricting blood vessels. And while the good old cold spoon trick works, reusable eye masks that are kept in the fridge— not in the freezer!—do wonders to wake up the face.” —David Delport, skin-care expert and global brand ambassador for REN Clean Skincare Helpful hints 1. It’s natural to think that a thicker layer of eye cream means more dramatic results, but using too much can backfire, causing clogged pores or getting into the eyes, creating irritation. A pea-size amount is all you need. 2. When it comes to face washing, avoid using hot water, which can exacerbate inflammation and accentuate dark circles by dilating blood vessels. If you’re feeling brave, try using cold water, which can reduce swelling and constrict those vessels! 3. Do you spend hours in front of your computer or phone screen? Don’t forget to take a well-deserved break each hour to rest your precious peepers. 4. Stay well-hydrated by drinking enough water and limiting your consumption of alcohol, caffeine and highsodium foods, which can lead to dehydrated skin. 2 4 6 7 3 5 1

CANADIAN LIVING JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023 | 35 1 What is cryptocurrency? Cryptocurrency is any form of currency that exists digitally or virtually and uses cryptography to secure transactions. What does that even mean, you may be asking? It means that your money is secret. You access your money (cryptocurrency) through a secure website or app and make transactions accordingly. Only you (or whoever has your passcode) can access your cryptocurrency and make transactions. If you lose your passcode, have questions, or need any help, you are on your own. There are no crypto busters or managers you can call. 2 So what’s Bitcoin? Bitcoin is a type of cryptocurrency, called store of value tokens. There are other types of cryptocurrencies, including DeFi, NFT (non-fungible tokens), utility tokens and yield farming tokens. Bitcoin happens to be the most popular and well known in the media. 3 How can I use cryptocurrency? Cryptocurrency can be used to purchase goods and services, just as you’d use physical money. You can also invest in cryptocurrency, which means you are using it to make money. 4 Why would I want to invest in it? The purpose of investing in anything, including cryptocurrency, is to make money. There is opportunity to do so with cryptocurrency; however, there are even greater risks if you lose your money. If you’re interested in cryptocurrency, talk with a professional and start small, with an amount that \RXFRXOGD̆RUGWRORVHZLWKRXW breaking a sweat. 5 But isn’t my money protected when it’s in cryptocurrency? No. Not even a little bit! Cryptocurrency is decentralized, which means that there is no government or authority who regulates it. This, in turn, means that if you lose your passcode or your backup recovery codewords, or the fund manager mysteriously goes missing, you have no recourse to get your money back. In Canada, the federal and provincial governments regulate banks and credit unions. Your money is insured in credit unions, and in banks through the Canadian Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC). The EHQH¿WWRWKLVLVWKDWLI\RXKDYH issues with your account or you suspect some kind of fraud, you will have some recourse. That’s not the case with cryptocurrency. 6 Is investing in cryptocurrency wise, then? That’s for you to discuss with your &HUWL¿HG)LQDQFLDO3ODQQHU However, what I can say is that the crypto market can be very volatile Remember, you can use crypto to purchase goods and services, and/or use it as an investment strategy. It’s important that you understand what you’re investing in, and even more crucial that you understand the risks associated with this investment. For example, since 2021, Bitcoin’s value has varied considerably. More specifLFDOO\LQDSSUR[LPDWH¿JXUHVLWZDV worth around $61,000 near the beginning of the year; it then dropped to $31,000, rose again to $67,000, dropped to $37,000, rose to $47,000, and has since dropped to a little more than $20,000. This speaks to how volatile the market is. It’s important to ask yourself if you FDQD̆RUGWRULVN\RXUPRQH\LQWKDW kind of roller-coaster scenario. 7 Can I convert cryptocurrency into cash? Yes, you can. This is done through a virtual wallet. Just like the traditional wallet you carry around, the virtual version holds your money, only digitally. To convert your funds to cash, you can add your traditional real-life Canadian bank account to your wallet. It’s important that your wallet is recognized by the Canadian government so that it’s aware of your transactions for tax purposes. 8 Do I have to claim my cryptocurrency on my taxes? Yes, you do. Once your cryptocurrency has been converted to Canadian currency, you claim that on your taxes, as per the rules set out by the Canada Revenue Agency. Cryptocurrency will likely increase in popularity as more people explore this investment option. As with all your investments, do the research and consider working with a professional so that your money can grow for you while you get a good night’s sleep! Lorna Watson stars as the science-loving, moped-riding, crime-fighting Sister Boniface. 38 | CANADIAN LIVING JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023 SISTER ACT THIS CRIME-SOLVING NUN IS RISING TO CELESTIAL HEIGHTS. Round about 10 years ago, an actress named Lorna Watson made a guest appearance on the first season of Father Brown. Her part was that of Sister Boniface, a young nun with a penchant for detective stories and a knack for science, who ended up helping the titular priest solve the mystery of the death of two women. Fast forward a decade and the sweetnatured Sister Boniface (that same Lorna Watson) is now primed for the second-season premiere of her very own show, a BritBox original. “Right from that first guest spot, the character of Sister Boniface was really well received by viewers, so giving her her own series was an easy sell,” says Neil Irvine, a producer who’s worked on both shows from the beginning. “It was an organic transition to this new program. Even though it’s set 10 years after the Father Brown series, Sister Boniface Mysteries retains a similar format and aesthetic.” There are key differences, of course. Where part of Father Brown’s skill lies in reading people, Sister Boniface’s focus is on forensics and sciences (her character is employed by the police department to collect and examine evidence, which she does in a trickedout lab in her convent). Other contrasts come in the feel of the show and the way the characters interact. “Sister Boniface has much more whimsy than Father Brown,” says Watson, whose previous work includes her own comedy-sketch show. “There’s a lot of fun here that I think comes across on-screen, especially in the relationships among all the quirky characters in the series. It’s more of an ensemble, where each character gets to shine.” Thanks to the combination of cozy mystery and endearing cast, it’s a winning formula that promises many successful seasons to come. Amen to that! on what, is the result. While some brands are relying on bringing in programs created in other countries (think: Poland, Denmark, France, South Korea, India, South Africa, Nigeria, Japan, Brazil and Argentina, to name just a few), others are doing that and more. BritBox, for example, is committed to maintaining the high-quality literary legacy of its parent companies (there are currently 86 adaptations of books available to stream, plus three more Agatha Christie adaptations on deck) as well as investing in compelling social history stories of the past (viewers who loved originals like The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe and Sherwood should tune in to the upcoming Three Little Birds, Stonehouse and The Confessions of Frannie Langton 1HWÀL[ is also on board, with Wellmania and The Pale Blue Eye, starring Christian Bale, slated to debut in January. All of that means that great storytelling, whether drama, comedy, mystery or history, is alive and well and available at the touch of a button. 40 | CANADIAN LIVING JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023 Super Cereal Oats contain large amounts of betaglucan, a soluble dietary fibre with plenty of health benefits. Beta-glucan helps slow digestion, which in turn slows the absorption of nutrients, particularly carbohydrates, and works to enhance satiety. By regulating intes tinal transit time, oats also help to promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria, increase the production of short-chain fatty acids and reduce total blood cholesterol levels. Consumption of oat fibre has also been associated with a reduced risk of heart disease. Full Flow Oats contain a group of bioavailable antioxidants called avenanthramides that may help mediate the heartprotective effect of oats. These compounds are almost exclusively found in oats. Studies have shown that avenanthramides can lower blood pressure levels by increasing the production of nitric oxide, which helps dilate blood vessels and leads to better blood flow. What’s more? Research suggests that avenanthramides also have the potential to help prevent and treat chronic oxidative stress and inflammation, especially age-related diseases including cardiovascular, metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. Itch Fix One of the most well-documented properties of oats is their ability to soothe dry, itchy skin conditions like dermatitis and eczema. This benefit is also attributed to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory powers of avenanth ramides. When applied topically, the anti-itch properties of oats are comparable to those of hydrocortisone treatments. Colloidal oatmeal, (finely ground oats) has been approved by the FDA as a skin-protective substance; it's found in numerous pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations.
