Celebration Issue 2021/22
Excellence: for each, for all
Lets Celebrate
It is always the highlight of an academic year asking for nominations for the Awards Evenings and then reading with interest the reasons why a student has been nominated. Each year it is always a difficult task to make those final selections and this is a testament to the many outstanding students we have at Thomas Gainsborough School. Therefore if you did receive an award you and your family should be extremely prud of this achievement and I would like to add my congratulations and also thank you for your commitment to your learning and for upholding the school values. I look forward to your continued progress. Helen Yapp

House Tutee Awards This student is always smiling, happy and always giving their very best to school life on a day to day basis. This student is an excellent role model for the rest of his tutor group and the wider school community. However, this student's dedication does not stop there, this student is always involved in raising money for charities, extra curricular activities and whole school competitions. This student raised over £100 for the Abbas 'Dedicated December' event last year and in addition to that raised over £275 for Cancer Research and took part in the 'Race for Life' event. He also has taken part in the Cricket Trials for Suffolk this year and entered the European Cake Baking Competition.
Oliver Bradbury
He is an excellent student in terms of his extra-curricular, academic ability and most importantly a fantastic role model for Abbas house.
The forced school closures meant that our current year 8 missed valuable opportunities such as transition week, and I was worried about the impact that this would have upon beginning last September. I needn’t have been worried, nothing will stop this individual from achieving. With 100% attendance to date, this individual has already achieved their ribbon badges for sport, creativity and commitment to learning. They have also earned a bronze badge, a Headteachers award and is a subject ambassador for RPE. This individual encompasses everything I wish all students aspire to and I am very proud to call them a Chamberlain student. In fact they earned the most amount of merits of anyone in Chamberlain last year with a whopping 948 merits, and not one warning. These merits were achieved by entering Matthew Dix every single competition. And these are entries that were not just to tick a box to get those merits. These were all high quality pieces of work being submitted, all undertaken in their own time. This student frequently demonstrates the school values both inside and outside of school, and this is supported by the vast number of nominations for House Values Award they have received. When thinking of this student, the value that comes to the forefront of my mind is resilience. School is not always the easiest for them, and challenges are faced daily, but you would never know this to look at them. They are always smiling, always positive, always giving their best and always being respectful towards others. During the lockdown period, this student attended all online lessons, submitted all tasks and even completed all aspects of the online tutoring programme. I know Mrs Jukes is equally as proud of you as I am, she always relays to me how much of a vital role you play within the tutor group.

This person has been recognised for their outstanding efforts both in and out of the classroom last year. They ended the year with over 420 merits and zero negatives; represented the House during sports day; and entered numerous House competitions, including the Egg challenge, the scientist poster competition and the maths challenge. They have been actively working towards their Ribbons and managed to achieve one before the end of Year 7, which is a rare achievement indeed. They were nominated for School Values Awards on a number of occasions last year, winning on a couple of occasions, and are an amazing positive influence around the school. They epitomise our desire for pupils to “Work Hard, Get involved, Be Proud”.
They continue to be part of the Peyton fundraising team and are happy to volunteer their time and effort (and cakes!) in order to move this forward for the house. This person was praised for their efforts during online lessons and was even rewarded for completing and bringing in homework early last year!
Matilda Wood
Since starting at TGS, Matilda has demonstrated a conscientious and committed approach to both her academic lessons and her involvement in school life out of the classroom. This dedication may not have always been obvious to others as she can be very humble and is not one to shout about her achievements. This is why I am so delighted to recognise her with this award. Matilda contributes to numerous enrichment activities; she has been in the cast of the school musical every year, regularly attends Creative Writing Club, Strategy Board Game Club, Drama Club and participated in the Performing Arts Showcase. In addition, Matilda is always keen to get involved in charity events, regardless of whether they are supporting Houghton House or another House event. Last year she took part in the 3 Peaks Challenge, Step Up Challenge and the Charity Triathlon.
Matilda puts her creativity to good use by entering lots of competitions such as the stamp design, creative writing, European Day of Languages and Remembrance poem competition and she has successfully won some of these competitions. If that wasn’t enough, Matilda is also a very keen reader and is very quickly working her way through the TGS50. I am certain Matilda will continue to show this amazing dedication in her years to come at TGS and look forward to hearing of her future successes. Well done!

S p e c i a l Awards
Paul Dainty Award for Character
Paul Dainty Award for Services to the School
Grace Secker
Josh Cates
During the Summer term Suffolk Constabulary asked schools to nominate students for their HOPE Awards. These awards were designed to find the positivity displayed by so many young people in such a difficult time. Needless to say we had a great deal to share from TGS but one of our students actually won the HOPE Awards for KS3 in our region. This young lady was nominated by her friend and her exact words used for the nomination were that this student “has been so determined whilst trying to come to school. She has been in and out of hospital but still coming into classes, always with a smile on her face even if she is not OK. She has told me before that she gets tired easily and gets headaches nearly everyday – but she still takes the time to check her friends are OK and does not moan to us about her condition”. Not only does this show us her determination and resilience but when you speak to this young lady, the animation in her stories can make anyone laugh and smile. Her use of inverted commas and eye-rolling shows how strong her character is and makes sure that her illness does not define her – her values do!
This student has been described by their form tutor as extremely humble. They have achieved so much it is with great delight we can celebrate them and hope that they realise how fantastic they are. To begin with they get involved in many aspects of school life – attending clubs, entering competitions, taking part in challenges and even part of our Sports Leader programme. Demonstrating a range of skills and values they have achieved two of their careers half ribbons. In form time they are often seen making great contributions to Theme of The Fortnight, Cultural Capital and the weekly quiz. They are known to support younger members of the form and show great team working skills. Throughout lockdown they were praised for maintaining the high standard of work we are used to seeing and achieving exemplary results. On top of all of that, this young man has achieved many amazing things outside of school for his BMX skills and now encourages younger children to take part and assists coaching them. Well done Josh!
Paul Dainty Award
for Character & for Services to the School
P
aul was a formidable member of the teaching staff at Great Cornard Upper School from 1973 – 2008. Paul joined the school as an excellent young teacher of Physical Education who went onto become Head of department, later furthering his career as a teacher of Science and Examinations Officer. Paul endeavoured to achieve the very best for all his students. The astro turf and climbing wall are both a reminder of the impact Paul made to the school. Paul will be remembered for his quick wit, prowess on a Hockey field, positive values, attitudes and behaviour and his determination to succeed at whatever he was doing. Paul promoted a ‘can do’ attitude always persevering with determination and effort to achieve the high standards he had set himself.
The students that are awarded his cups have represented the values and determination that Paul promoted throughout his time at GCUS, Thomas Gainsborough School.

Shelley Baisden Award for Learning Shelley Baisden was a new, young English teacher and tutor when she was tragically diagnosed with cancer. She combined regular treatment with her job, often sporting a cannula in her arm whilst teaching. She displayed amazing bravery and commitment. She was popular with the students: unfailingly lively, enthusiastic and positive in her teaching and as a Tutor. She loved her job.
This award has been dedicated in her memory as the school felt her loss keenly; she was so full of life and young promise.
Rebecca Goss Creative Writing Award Rebecca Goss is a British poet who was nominated for the 2013 Forward Prize for Best Collection of Poetry for "Her Birth". She was one of the Poetry Book Society's 20 poets of the next generation and in 2015 was nominated for the Warwick Prize for Writing. An Alumni of Thomas Gainsborough School (GCUS). She attended GCUS from 1987-92.
The student that is awarded her cup has shown flair and aptitude for creative writing.
This award is given to a student who has shown dedication to their English studies and is keen to get involved in school life.
There is a real maturity of style about this young lady’s writing, which was demonstrated in her entry into the Escape school writing competition last year.
This young lady is a keen writer and regularly attends Creative Writing club with Mr Edwards. Her writing is of high quality with a skillful use of language, detailed characterisation and effective structuring.
Her World Book Day Short Story was read aloud across the whole school and her Remembrance poem was a winning House entry. She is skilful in manipulating language and her writing includes well observed details that bring her characters to life and put the reader in the scene. These skills are also proving beneficial in helping her score highly in the GCSE Language Paper 1 Section B Creative writing task and we look forward to seeing what she will produce in the future.
She is also willing to get involved, volunteering to edit the Creative Writing group anthology and she has also put herself forward to read one of her stories for the school digital magazine Landscape.

KS3 & KS4 Mike Kiely Award for Languages
KS3 & KS4 Mike Kiely Award for Languages
M
ike Kiely is a former teacher at Thomas Gainsborough School (1987-2017) who during over thirty years inspired students to learn Modern Foreign Languages. He taught German and French to young children in our local Primary Schools as part of our outreach programme; he continued to promote the love for languages during secondary school and helped students excel at A Level. During his time at TGS he led a variety of trips abroad to Germany, France and Spain which gave students a great opportunity to interact with the foreign language and culture in a unique way. He also organised Work Experience Exchanges with A Level students, which motivated them to further their learning of languages at university level. Mike was always looking into new strategies to encourage students to learn languages and get the best results they could. His professionalism and sense of humour made it easy for all students and colleagues to enjoy working with him.
He is a truly inspirational person and linguist who will always be remembered at TGS for his great work promoting languages.
Keeley-Mae Partridge This student is such an enthusiastic linguist, who has a great talent when it comes to understanding how languages work. Their contributions in the lesson are always positive, as well as their interactions with other students – always willing to help, inspire and motivate.
This student has shown great commitment since the start of their GCSE studies, attending revision every week, completing all the classwork to a high standard, working on homework tasks in great detail and taking full advantage of the summer school and all of the resources available.
This student will be able to use languages in a variety of careers and become a great role model for many people.
This student is very good at independent work but will also support other students whenever possible. This student sets a great example for those working in the lesson and for future Spanish students.
It has been a pleasure to work with Keeley-Mae – well done!

Good Citizen in the Community Award At Thomas Gainsborough School we are keen to recognise and reward students for their efforts outside of school as well as the hard work they commit to their studies. We want our students to become outstanding citizens and contribute greatly to the society in which they live.
Betty Cocker Award for Volunteering Betty Cocker (1926-2000) lived in Great Cornard and, like a seaside stick of rock, was Great Cornard all the way through. She served as Chair of Governors at Pot Kiln Primary School while combining this role with that of school cleaner. She was on the parish council of Gt Cornard and Chairperson. She was a selfless servant of community and public life. Real salt of the Earth. She also had a pocketful of sweets that she would tuck into and share! Betty Cocker was founder member of Gt Cornard Labour Party and Babergh District Councillor for Gt Cornard North. Betty Cocker Grove in Great Cornard is named in her memory for all of the work she did for the local community.
This award is to recognise someone who makes a difference both inside and outside of school life.
This award is, therefore, given to a student who shows the same commitment to helping the community in their own time and making a difference.
This student certainly makes a difference at TGS. They have embraced all of the many opportunities offered and achieved so much. Taking part in competitions, clubs, events and performances – it is no wonder they have achieved all 5 of their careers ribbons! As if that was not enough, they are also a subject ambassador and can be seen supporting younger students both in form time and clubs. They were also instrumental in organising their House charity event last year. As part of the Sports Leader programme this young lady spent time at the weekends completing online zoom training events to gain her qualification as well as helping a the local Primary schools. She can also be found helping to run the library at Nayland Primary School and when she is not competing in Crufts herself she volunteers to run a class at dog training too! Well done Ruth!
Olivia Large
This student is someone truly amazing – just wait till you hear all of their contributions and achievements last year! Such a role model making the most of school life: attending a range of extra-curricular clubs from Mock Trials to golf, and representing their house by entering many of the competitions on offer. They have demonstrated skills to achieve two of their careers ribbons so far and achieve exemplary reports and numerous merits for their efforts. In the wider community this student has supported extra-curricular activities, assisting with sessions after school, supporting at Open Evening and even becoming a subject ambassador – demonstrating their leadership skills. Her tutor and teachers describe her as a very helpful and supportive student – and she has been since she started at TGS. She has played an active part in charity events in school and out of school even running their own bake sale for Cancer Research outside of school. What a fantastic citizen to have in our school community, well done Olivia.

Platinum Award for Contribution to the Arts
Headteacher Values Awards Many of our students demonstrate the school values over time but these awards go to students who consistently demonstrate all of our school values all the time. Students who get involved and work hard on a daily basis – they not only get involved but inspire their peers to join in too. Students who are excellent role models for others and who lead the way with their ideas and enthusiasm always volunteering to help where they can.
Since 2017, Thomas Gainsborough School has been recognised for its outstanding commitment to the arts by the Arts Council of England with the platinum level Artsmark award. Only a few schools in the United Kingdom are recognised with this award, which is bestowed upon schools which demonstrate a broad, rich and engaging arts curriculum, influence on the national arts conversation and an ability to increase the local and regional access to arts and cultural experience and positive impact in their local setting. Even fewer schools have been recognised with a platinum level Artsmark award twice, as Thomas Gainsborough School has been in 2019.
The ‘platinum award for the arts’ celebrates a student each year whose commitment to the arts goes beyond the exemplary performance we see from so many of our dedicated students, who gets actively involved in the arts in many ways and has had a positive impact upon the culture of the arts at Thomas Gainsborough School.
This student has been a regular performer in school productions since starting at the school. She is someone who will work with energy and enthusiasm whether in a lead role (like her moving portrayal of Mrs Johnstone) or her chorus work in whole school productions. This young lady has always been dedicated and committed and this was shown during lockdown more than ever when her focus and hard work never waned. In lessons she is a leader who works well with everybody and her enjoyment for the arts really shines. Well done!
These students will go far in life and succeed no matter what path they choose.
Charlie Stone This student is a quiet hard worker who does not always seem to recognise how fantastic they are – they display the values of our school naturally and in so many ways: entering competitions, supporting younger members of the tutor group, working hard in lessons and putting in extra effort for homework – shown by the number of exemplaries in their reports over these two years. They also put themselves forward to improve things for the future – being a keen member of the Eco Committee in school and their House Committee, coming up with new charity events. Whilst maintaining this fantastic positivity in school he also shows resilience outside of school with his keen love of farming. He has in the past year progressed to ploughing and cultivating his own field – what an achievement.

Headteacher Values Awards This student will always take time to say hello to both staff and other students, and is genuinely interested in having a conversation to check how things are. They have absolutely embraced school life to the full since they joined us and that enthusiasm has not waned – they still get involved in charity events for any house and even helps to organise events for their own. Completing entries to many of the competitions to a high standard and continuing to read books from our TGS 50 list. They have maintained their high standard of work and keen to complete extra tasks – including giving presentations within class on independent work they have completed at home, this might explain why they are a subject ambassador too! His reports are exemplary along with his manners and he displays our values each and every day. It has been a pleasure to watch this young man grow in confidence and we look forward to hearing about what he goes on to achieve in the future! Kai Thomas
