IIT Jodhpur, in collaboration with the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), presented Youth Conclave 2022 on the topic of "Emerging Technologies for Sustainable Development". The event aims to provide the nation's youth a stage to express themselves and demonstrate their ability for invention in quest of solutions that have an impact on our common future. INAE Youth Conclave 2 Newsletter Vol.2 No. 2, December 2022 Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Jodhpur It gave students a fantastic opportunity to interact with INAE professionals and subject-matter experts who have made significant contributions to engineering R&D, industry, and academia. Quantum technologies, smart infrastructure, digital healthcare, materials for sustainability, experiential interface, and sustainability of food and drinking water supply were the specific focal areas. Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Prof Devang V Khakhar, (right) (left) Some Guest Speakers: Continuing Education Program (CEP) Course on Data Analytics and Fundamentals of Machine Learning for Process Modelling by Dr. Angan Sengupta and Dr. Abhilasha Maheshwari. The Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Jodhpur offered a short course on "Data Analytics and Fundamentals of Machine Learning for Process Modelling" from October 6 th to 8 th , 2022. This course sought to upskill people, academics, and industry professionals with essential knowledge and training in accordance with the vision of Process Industry 4.0 and beyond. It also introduced the application and potential of data analytics and machine learning for informed data-driven decision-making. The course included MATLAB/Octave coding sessions for process optimization, ideas of data analytics, the fundamentals of process modelling, machine learning, and stochastic processes. The course received excellent feedback. Convocation 3 Newsletter Vol.2 No. 2, December 2022 Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Jodhpur The students of master's program of the Dept. Of Chemical Engineering were convocated on 12th November 2022, by Prof Santanu Choudhary, Director of IIT Jodhpur. Mr. Aditya Ganesh from the batch of 2020-22 of master’s program of Chemical Engineering was awarded the Gold Medal and Silver Medal for his academic excellence. A few glimpses of the students with the Director during the Convocation Dinner were captured along with the faculty of the Dept. Of Chemical Engineering. Chem-E-Sorption (Registration Open) The Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Jodhpur is delighted to organize ‘CHEM-ESORPTION 2023’ with a theme of ‘Sustainable Chemical Engineering’. Chem-E-Sorption is a unique amalgamation of intriguing competitions, invited lectures from academia and industry, panel discussions and other activities. The core idea of this event is to provide a platform to the young talented engineering students and enthusiastic research scholars with the real world rapidly ever-changing technologies to enhance their knowledge and comprehend advanced technologies in the domain of chemical and interdisciplinary engineering. Department Seminar Series 4 Newsletter Vol.2 No. 2, December 2022 Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Jodhpur Prof. D. Mandal Prof. Mandal and Dr. Sandeep gave a talk on the Role of Chemical Engineering in the Department of Atomic Energy. Prof. Mandal is currently serving as the Head, Alkali Material & Metal Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Trombay, Mumbai,. Prof. Mandal graduated from Calcutta University with a B. Tech in Chemical Engineering in 1988. In 1990, he started working at the BARC Chemical Engineering Division. He created methods like packedfluidization to improve the thermal characteristics of ceramic pebbles. Prof. Mandal earned his PhD in 2012 and the IIT Bombay award for excellence in thesis work in 2013. In 2015, the Homi Bhabha National Institute appointed him as a professor. Prof. Mandal has won various honors, including the 2018 Distinguished Chemical Engineering Speaker Award and the Homi Bhabha Science & Technology Award in 2016, respectively. In 2018, he was selected to be a Fellow of the IIChE. Dr. Sandeep K.C. Dr. Sandeep received his Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calicut in Kerala. He received both his MSc(Engg.) and PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Homi Bhabha National Institute in Mumbai. Dr. Sandeep has received a number of awards, including the DAE Young Engineer Award from 2016 and the Nina Saxena Excellence in Technology Award from 2022. He won two group achievement awards from the Department of Atomic Energy in 2015 and 2021. He is currently a senior scientist in the Heavy Water Division, Chemical Engineering Group, BARC. Mr. Gottimukkala Chaitanya The Department of Chemical Engineering of IIT Jodhpur invited Mr. Gottimukkala Chaitanya to speak on "Process Safety in Hydrogen Projects" on October 19, 2022. The talk focused on the principles of process safety, hazard analysis, and design considerations that must be considered throughout the lifetime of an industrial facility. A case study on a past incident involving hydrogen was discussed to showcase the importance of safety in hydrogen projects. Mr. Chaitanya completed his MS (Chemical Engineering ) from Lamar University, Texas, USA in 2008 and joined CB&I (Chicago Bridge and Iron Company) as a Process Safety Engineer. Later he worked for McDermott International Inc., RISKBytes and worked on multiple offshore and onshore projects primarily on Process Safety, Risk Management, and Functional Safety. After over a decade of industrial experience on process safety and risk assessment in USA, now he has a startup named “SREVeda” in India where he is currently the Director and Principal Consultant. Mr. Chaitanya is a DNV certified HAZOP Leader, NCEES certified Professional Engineer (P.E) to name a few of his licensures, which showcases his immense skillsets on Process Safety


Students’ Corner 5 Newsletter Vol.2 No. 2, December 2022 Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Jodhpur UG Orientation: 20th September 11 AM: UG Departmental orientation was conducted with warms regards to the young undergraduates by the Department of Chemical Engineering. Welcoming and introducing them to the features and possibilities in the domain of Chemical Engineering and contributing to all facets of industries and social needs were projected. Internships Hrishi Raj Singh: SERB Internship under the supervision of Dr. Vikky Anand Shrayansh Gupta: SERB Internship under Dr. Praveen Kumar Sappidi. Competition Alert PG Orientation: 20th September 11 AM: The orientation for the postgraduate students was held motivating them to explore the diverse research areas in the field of Chemical Engineering. An invited guest talk by Prof. K. K. Pant (IIT Delhi) provided an indepth perspective to the newly joined research scholars. Safety training by the department 6 Newsletter Vol.2 No. 2, December 2022 Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Jodhpur On 11th Nov 2022, a safety training program was conducted by the EHS team of Dept. Of Chemical Engineering for the postgraduate students to hone their lab safety skills related to lab maintenance, chemical waste disposal and emergency protocol. Following topics were covered during the training session: 1. Good laboratory practices (GLP): ▪ Safe working: Understading of labels and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) ▪ Use of correct PPE ▪ Maintenance and housekeeping of labs 2. Disposal and segregation of chemical waste 3. What to do in case of spills 4.
