4 Angi | March 2023 GETTY IMAGES 4 THINGS TO DO IN March Spring brings new opportunities and new challenges. Here are some things that might need addressed in the upcoming season: Prep for tax time It’s always a good idea to have a pro review your taxes, but a good accountant could be more valuable than ever this year. The Inflation Reduction Act introduced a wide array of new tax credits for energyefficient home improvements, and an expert can help guide you through them and get your best possible return. You might be surprised what deductions, rebates, and credits are available for working on your home. Organize your garage Make your garage more useful and free up space for a car or that new tool bench by doing just a few things. First, map out your space and have a clear plan to use everything efficiently. You should also prioritize by usage – put things you use once a year on high shelves. Make sure you can easily reach what you need. For a simple, inexpensive upgrade, add a pegboard. This can make effecient use of vertical space. Be sure to call a garage organizer for even more ideas. A pro must have either no reviews or an average rating of 3.0 stars or above to advertise. GETTY IMAGES React to roof leaks A small roof leak can become a big problem if it is not dealt with promptly. Openings such as vents and attic fans are often weak points where a leak might form. If you see signs of water damage, call a roofing pro immediately. Place a bucket under the leak to protect your floor. If the leak is near an electrical outlet, unplug and cover the outlet. Lastly, take photos and videos of the leak for insurance purposes. Handle a clogged drain A clogged drain is a hassle, but it doesn’t mean you need to call a pro yet. Try squirting dish soap down your drain and slowly pouring a half-gallon of boiling water behind it. A half-cup of baking soda followed by a half-cup of vinegar and some boiling water can gently loosen clogs, as can a plunger or drain snake. Use liquid drain cleaner sparingly and as a last resort. If none of these work, it’s time to call in a professional. CONNECT WITH US Please share your comments about our stories and service. Thank you for being a valued reader. 6 Angi | March 2023 GETTY IMAGES Accreditation is not required to work in tree service. However, it can be an excellent sign that a company goes the extra mile and takes their work seriously. Here are two of the most respected accreditations out there: International Society of Arboriculture: ISA-certified arborists are experienced workers who have passed an extensive examination covering all aspects of tree care. Tree Care Industry Association: Accredited companies have at least one ISA-certified arborist on staff, and they are audited for trade-licensing compliance. They’re also evaluated for trained personnel and proper insurance. Many states and localities have their own licensing requirements, and tree service is a hazardous job, so always ask for proof of licensing and insurance when hiring a tree service company. Ask Angi Our editors answer your most pressing household questions. Does my tree service company need to be accredited? ANGI.INK/TREES0323 ASK_0323.indd 6 1/24/23 2:56 PM

Angi.com 7 GETTY IMAGES Does my lawn need to be aerated? Aeration can boost your lawn’s health and appearance. Aeration involves using a tool to poke holes in your lawn, remove plugs of thatch and soil, and deposit them back onto the lawn. They’ll break down so the contents can filter down into the soil. This reduces soil compaction and allows roots to grow longer and stronger. By reducing thatch buildup, it helps air, light, and water reach the roots. You can do this work yourself, or hire a pro. When a pro aerates your lawn, it’s usually combined with fertilization. On average, the work costs about $125. How can I detect water leaks? Water leaks can become one of the biggest problems in your home. They waste water and potentially send utility bills sky-high. Most importantly, an untreated water leak can cause mold growth and expensive damage to your house. Pay close attention to your indoor fixtures for signs of a leak. Low water pressure, ceiling stains, discolored water, and musty smells are all signs something might be wrong. If you think you have a leak but can’t find it on your own, call a professional plumber for help. How can we help? Email your own home care questions to [email protected] with the subject line “Ask Angi” and we may answer them in a future issue. ASK ANGI ASK_0323.indd 7 1/24/23 2:56 PM

8 Angi | March 2023 GETTY IMAGES Angi Reports: The State of Home Spending in 2023 The past few years have seen tremendous change in our lifestyles and spending, and our homes are no exception. Angi’s latest State of Home Spending Report reveals what projects homeowners invested in last year, and what this means for 2023. 8 Angi | March 2023 SPOT_0323.indd 8 1/25/23 1:09 PM

Angi.com 9 GETTY IMAGES SPOTLIGHT say that lifestyle considerations are the most important reason for doing work on their homes, whether to make it better suited for their needs or to get more enjoyment out of an outdated home. 2021 was a big year. Homeowners spent more than $10,000 on average on home improvement spending. But the average returned to $8,484 in 2022, more in keeping with previous years. With pandemic-related lifestyle changes settling down, inflation was a big factor in home improvement in 2022. Nearly 75% of homeowners said inflation influenced both their spending and the number of projects they undertook. Want to learn more? Click here for the full report. The single biggest impact on home spending in recent years, of course, has been the pandemic. As homeowners hunkered down in their houses for much of 2020, they thought less about how home improvements might affect value, and instead how they would change and improve their lifestyles as everyone was staying at home more often. Now that many pre-pandemic activities and behaviors have returned, how has this affected home spending? Angi surveyed 6,500 consumers to determine what was most important to them. It turns out that lifestyle needs are still a major driver. Prior to 2020, “return on investment” was the top motivator for home improvement spending on Angi surveys. This year, 61% of homeowners “2021 WAS A BIG YEAR. HOMEOWNERS SPEND MORE THAN $10,000 ON AVERAGE ON HOME IMPROVEMENT SPENDING. 10 Angi | March 2023 GETTY IMAGES How to Inspect Your Basement This Spring With the rainy season on the way, homes with basements need to be prepared. The long winter has already put plenty of strain on your basement, and water pressure can lead to leaks or even flooding. But with these tips, you can help ensure your basement stays in tip-top shape this season. PRO_0323.indd 10 1/24/23 2:57 PM

Angi.com 11 PRO TIP Look out for leaks and cracks Inspect your basement for evidence of water leakage and wall cracks. Make a note of any new cracks you find and check them on a regular basis. Mark the location of the crack with a pencil so you can see later on if it’s expanding. If you find any large or expanding cracks, call a basement professional for help. Loose joints, inward-bulging walls, and cinder blocks sticking out are other signs of trouble. Check the basement after every rain When you take a look right after rainfall, you can determine wet spots and where leaks are coming from. If you have a finished basement, pay close attention to the carpet and near the corners. If there’s a musty smell, that’s a sign water is intruding somewhere. Inspect the exterior Your basement needs all the help it can get from groundwater pressure. Ensure your gutters are clean and that your downspouts direct the water at least three feet away. Look out for water pooling in your yard or signs of erosion, particularly near the foundation. You may need a drainage or yard grading specialist if you find these problems. Test your sump pump Your sump pump is one of the most vital lines of defense against water. Check it out every six months by cleaning the basin of debris and ensuring the grate and discharge pipe aren’t blocked. The pump should be level, upright, and plugged in. Fill the basin with water, which should activate the pump. If it doesn’t, a pro should take a look. PRO_0323.indd 11 1/24/23 2:57 PM

ADOBE STOCK Clean Sweep Tips for a Tidy Home BY PAUL F. P. POGUE As the seasons change, thoughts turn to spring cleaning. Your house has had a lot of people indoors most of the winter, and it’s a perfect time for a fresh start. While you can certainly take on this task yourself, you’ll avoid a lot of hassle by hiring a house cleaning service to take care of it for you. Professional cleaners know all the nuts-and-bolts details and the easily-missed tasks, and they work efficiently. Most importantly, by hiring a cleaner, you’re giving back to yourself the gift of time to spend on family, friends, or hobbies—anything other than scrubbing every corner of your home! 12 Angi | March 2023 CVST_0323.indd 12 1/24/23 12:49 PM

14 Angi | March 2023 Should You Hire a Solo Cleaner or a Company? You’ll need to face the decision of whether to hire a solo cleaner or a cleaning company that offers a variety of employees. Cleaning companies offer bonded, licensed workers but often charge more for their services. However, this means that if a cleaning job wasn’t done to your satisfaction, you can take the issue up with the company or take them to court. Most companies send out at least two cleaners on any job and charge a minimum price, no matter the size of your home. Your company may or may not send out the same cleaner(s) every time, so if that matters to you, talk to the company about this early on. When hiring a solo cleaner, ensure in advance that you know the expectations. Their rates are typically lower, and often their ability is equal to or superior to large companies. But there’s little recourse for a homeowner if a job isn’t completed to your satisfaction, especially if the cleaner chooses to shut down their operation. There’s also a concern if an individual cleaner gets ill or has a personal emergency. Companies typically have backups available. However, a solo cleaner means you’ll know who is coming to your house every time. Having the same cleaner means they’ll be familiar with your personal preferences and your house’s specific quirks. SPRING INTO ACTION Find house cleaning pros near you to help you make your decisions. GETTY IMAGES CVST_0323.indd 14 1/24/23 12:49 PM

Angi.com 15 Questions to Ask When Hiring Cleaners Are you licensed, bonded, and insured? Will I have the same person or team working on my house every time? Do you provide your own supplies? What are your cancellation policies? What will you do if someone accidentally damages my home or belongings? Should I prep my house for your work in a specific way? ADOBE STOCK CVST_0323.indd 15 1/24/23 12:49 PM

16 Angi | March 2023 HOUSE CLEANING COSTS Most cleaning pros charge between $30–$50 per hour. The average cleaning job costs $120–$235. Home size has the most significant impact, followed by the number of bathrooms, which tend to take the longest to clean. House Cleaning Checklist Most cleaning services will require new clients to commit to a “deep cleaning” up front. But what exactly does that service entail? Essentially, it means almost every corner of your home will receive special attention, with regular “maintenance cleanings” afterward. The tasks tackled in a deep versus standard clean vary by company. You’ll generally get a break on price for more frequent cleanings. The initial deep clean, or a one-time cleaning, usually costs more since it involves more time. Be sure to find out the specifics when you hire. 18 Angi | March 2023 DIY House Cleaning If you want to clean your house, start by creating a daily checklist. The best house cleaning is the cleaning you do every day. Staying on top of smaller tasks keeps them from piling up. Create a daily, weekly, and monthly checklist that includes all the tasks needed around your home each period, and stick to it. To plan a DIY deep clean, consider all those hard-to-reach areas that you always put off. Under your bed, under your oven, the cobwebs in high-up places—all these things need to be addressed during a deep clean. Follow the checklist on the previous page for the best results. Create a realistic schedule of activities for your cleaning plan, and make sure you can devote yourself fully to it. House cleaners follow a simple rule that improves efficiency: “Front to back, top to bottom.” Begin with the back of your home and clean your way to the front. Within each room, start at the ceiling and work your way down. Working back to front avoids backtracking over anything you’ve already cleaned, and going top to bottom gets all the debris. Dirt and dust tend to travel downwards during cleaning. You’ll catch it all when you start with the ceiling and finish by sweeping, vacuuming, or mopping. GETTY IMAGES CVST_0323.indd 18 1/24/23 12:49 PM

Angi.com 19 Don’t Overlook These Spots When Cleaning ON TOP: Hard-to-reach or high spots like the tops of large appliances, windows, and bookshelves collect lots of dust. Don’t forget to clean the tops of doorframes—that’s an often-missed spot. UNDERNEATH: Most people don’t often clean underneath appliances like the oven or refrigerator. BASEBOARDS: You may not think to clean your baseboards, especially if you’re cleaning in a hurry. CEILING FANS: The fan blades collect dust and dirt, which can build up fast. Here’s a tip for hassle-free cleaning: slide an old pillow case over each blade, then remove it carefully to avoid spilling the dust. ABOVE THE OVEN: You probably clean the range hood, but remember to give extra attention to anything above the oven, such as cabinets. Small amounts of grease still build up over time. LIGHT SWITCHES AND DOOR KNOBS: These are the most often-touched and germ-covered areas of your home. Remember to wipe them down. SMALL APPLIANCES: Give your microwave, coffee maker, toaster, and so forth a clean sweep. TOOTHBRUSH HOLDERS: Rinse and wipe down toothbrush holders and soap dishes to prevent germs. YOUR CLEANING SUPPLIES: Whether it’s your sponge or your vacuum, periodically GETTY IMAGES make sure your supplies get cleaned. ¢ CVST_0323.indd 19 1/24/23 12:49 PM

Angi.com 21 BY BRIGITTA SHANNON ROSE Imagine summer, where a warm breeze blows through the trees, and the sun shines brightly in the sky. It’s a perfect time to gather outside and enjoy friends and family gatherings on your deck. Don’t have one? Here are some reasons a deck is an excellent addition to your home. 4Ways a Deck Can Level Up Your Home FEA_0323.indd 21 1/25/23 1:13 PM

DECK COST On average, a deck costs $4,124–$11,600. The biggest impacts on cost include materials used and deck size. Overall, expect to pay $30–$60 per square foot for a deck. A decking pro can explain all your options. GETTY IMAGES Creates More Entertaining Space A deck provides you with an entertainment space that adds more square footage to your house and gives you the benefit of enjoying everything the great outdoors has to offer. With additions like benches, canopies, firepits, grills, outdoor ovens, and outdoor furniture that looks like it would fit nicely in your living room, you can create a personalized entertainment space that is relaxing and convenient for both you and your guests. 1 FEA_0323.indd 22 1/25/23 1:13 PM

GETTY IMAGES Improves Your Curb Appeal According to the National Association of REALTORS® Research Group, millennials make up 37% of the market and are more interested in purchasing homes with decks than other generations. By appealing to this larger group of buyers, you might experience a faster sale when you put your home on the market. Building a deck can be pricey but worth it. QUESTIONS FOR A PRO Here are some questions to ask when hiring a professional contractor: ■ How long have you been in business? ■ Do you have proof of insurance, registration, licensing, and bonding? ■ Do you provide a warranty, and what are the details? ■ What do you recommend for my deck? ■ Do you have experience working with the deck materials or add-ons I have chosen? ■ Do you have a portfolio of projects you have completed you can share? ■ Do you handle acquiring the necessary permits? ■ How much will it cost? ■ How long do you estimate it will take to complete the project? ■ Who do you have as references I can contact? 2 Angi.com 23 FEA_0323.indd 23 1/25/23 1:13 PM

24 Angi | March 2023 GETTY IMAGES Increases Your Home Value NAR’s 2021 Cost vs. Value Report states that a wood deck produces an average 65.8% return on investment. Composite decks produce an average ROI of 63.2%. Yes, composite is more pricey but requires less maintenance in the long run. The return on investment changes depending on deck size. Smaller decks see higher resale value, and typically cost less to install. Remember, however, that a higher home value means increased taxes, so keep a close eye on your tax bill. MATERIAL COMPARISON WOOD DECKING ■ Looks natural ■ Lower installation cost ■ Easy to customize ■ More maintenance ■ Higher cost over time ■ Less durable COMPOSITE DECKING ■ Can look artificial ■ Higher installation cost ■ Difficult to customize ■ Less maintenance ■ Lower cost over time ■ More durable 3 FEA_0323.indd 24 1/25/23 1:13 PM

GETTY IMAGES Enhances Your Home’s Space No matter what your yard size or shape, there are multiple options for decks you can add to your home. You can choose a multi-level, detached, island, or swimming pool deck for a larger yard. If your lot is smaller, you can choose from an attached, wrap-around, or sideyard deck. Multiple options give you a chance to customize your deck to fit your space—and your needs. ¢ 4 UPKEEP COST You have your beautiful new deck and are ready to relax, entertain, and enjoy the extra space. Keep in mind, though, that decks require care to keep that space as functional, safe, and beautiful as possible. Costs to consider when owning a deck include the following: MAINTENANCE Upkeep can vary depending on what your deck needs. POWER WASHING A yearly cleaning job costs $150– $400, depending on the deck size. RESEALING Costs $20–$40 per gallon of sealant if you do it yourself, or call a pro. Angi.com 25 FEA_0323.indd 25 1/25/23 1:13 PM

Your pro will focus on the most relevant component of your system during the inspection—in this case, the air conditioning—but they’ll also take a look at the heating and possibly catch small problems before they get big. INSPECTION CHECKLIST: Inspect the motor, blower, drain line, and coils Check operating pressures and temperatures Verify refrigerant levels Lubricate where needed Check ducts for potential air leaks Test electrical components GETTY IMAGES PLANNING YOUR PROJECT AC Inspection You wouldn’t drive your car for two years without giving it an oil change, and you shouldn’t run your HVAC system for years at a time without getting it inspected and tuned up. You should hire a licensed HVAC pro to inspect your system twice a year—before you start up your heater and before you start up the air conditioning. This costs between $70–$100 on average. If you have an ongoing HVAC service contract with a company, this inspection is likely already included. STAY COOL Research local HVAC pros to tune up your system.
