History The history of Aceh can be traced back to the era of the Aceh Sultanate, an independent Islamic state located on the northern tip of Sumatra, Indonesia. The Sultanate was founded in the late 15th century and remained in power until the Dutch colonial period in the early 19th century. In the mid-19th century, Aceh was annexed by the Dutch, who imposed their authority over the region until the Japanese occupation of Indonesia in World War II. In the late 20th century, a separatist movement developed in Aceh, resulting in a decades-long civil war between the Acehnese and the Indonesian government. In 2005, a peace agreement was signed, ending the conflict and granting Aceh a degree of autonomy from Jakarta.
