CLIMATIZACIÓN DE UN COMPLEJO MUNICIPAL CON UN SISTEMA HÍBRIDO DE ENERGÍA GEOTÉRMICA Y AEROTÉRMICA Autor: Mola Hernando, Sergio. Director: De Isabel García, Juan Antonio Entidad Colaboradora: Geothermal Energy S.L.

DESIGN OF A HYBRID SYSTEM OF GEOTHERMAL AND AEROTHERMAL ENERGY PROVIDING HVAC TO A NEW CITY HALL FACILITY Author: Mola Hernando, Sergio Director: De Isabel García, Juan Antonio Collaborating Institution: Geothermal Energy S.L. PROJECT ABSTRACT The aim of this project is to design a hybrid geothermal and aerothermal system for the production of the thermal energy demanded by a new city hall facility consisting of the City Council and an underground shopping area in Galapagar, belonging to Comunidad de Madrid. This kind of system has been chosen because it combines advantages from each technology, which make that option the most suitable in economic and ecological terms, as shown all along the project. It is because the high efficiency of geothermal heat pumps, which has its handicap in its high cost of installation, and on the other side, the low cost of installation of aerothermal heat pumps, despite its lower efficiency. So, the point is to cover base energy with the geothermal resource, and only use aerothermal energy in the hottest and coldest moments of the year. As we said before, the hybrid system consists of two heat pumps that take advantage of each resource. The geothermal resource of very low temperature profits of the geothermal heat exchanger installed, consisting on a vertical field probes; and secondly, the aerothermal resource, which is also considered a renewable resource because of its high performance (SPF higher than 2.5). Both heat pumps can reverse the cycle so that they can provide heating or air condioning, depending on the demand, and have inverter technology in their compressors so that they can change their power output depending on the building demand in order to be always operating with the highest efficiency. In order to choose the most suitable geothermal capacity, we have calculated an estimation of temperature at every hour all along the year. To do that, we have applied a method of predicting temperature by only knowing the highest and lowest temperature of every day, and the precise moment where they occurred. This is an extrat of the number of hours by 1ºC range of temperature corresponding to the first winter we took into account:
In the illustration above, number of hours is represented in red colour, having the different ranges of temperature (from -11ºC on top to 38ºC) coloured in blue on the left side, corresponding to the first winter in opening time of the city hall (from 10am to 18 pm).
Another need approximation is to predict the power needed by the building to maintain thermal confort in every moment of the year. To do that, we have created a curve based in the thermal charges calculated according to RITE for the worst conditions for cooling and heating. The curve contains this 2 points and satisfy other criteria tha allow us to assure it is a good estimation curve, as we explain in “Calculations” part of the project. This curve links this temperature with thermal power needed by the building:

Therefore, the most suitable hybrid system is determined by its lower cost after 25 years of service, which is the life cycle of any of the 3 systems. To determine this cost we have to quantify on one side the operating costs and on the other the installation ones. For operating costs we can calculate easily by assigning a cost per kWh, depending on whether it provides geothermal or aerothermal form, and getting the number for the whole consumption. However, to estimate the cost of geothermal installation related to each system, in addition to take into account the cost of heat pumps, we must know the characteristics of the geothermal heat exchanger system each system will require. This can only be done by a simulator specialized in heat exchange with the ground, which in this case was the Earth Energy Designer (EED) software. This software works by inputting data obtained by the Geothermal Response Test and it calculates the number of meters of drilling required to satisfy the UNE 100715-1 temperature field at the end of the useful life of the system. The simplification of both costs is represented below: Geothermal Power Aerothermal Power Drilling Length Instalation Cost Annual Operation Cost NPV
OPTION 1 80kW 80kW 1464m 101.865,00 € 11.505,00 € 0,00 €
OPTION 2 100kW 60kW 1585m 108.060,00 € 10.966,00 € 11.974,26 €
OPTION 3 120kW 40kW 1860m 124.198,00 € 10.596,00 € 9.780,53 €
In the table above we included the Net Present Value for each system. The NPV is a method to compare investments and it shows us wich is the most suitable system in economic terms returning represented by the highest value. In this case, Option 2 (100kW geothermal + 60kW aerothermal) is the hybrid system chosen for our project.
Once chosen the most appropriate system, we have to detail the process required to carry out the installation of the hybrid system. We have divided it in two different parts. On one side, the ground exchanger of 1585m of drilling length which concerns from the method of drilling required for this kind of ground, to the correct election of the circulation pump capable of dealing with the headloss of the circuit. On the other side, the election and correct installation of the heat pumps and any other elements required for the correct working of the hybrid system.
