REPLACE THE P/N 1650E412 MLG BALL SCREW ASSEMBLIES. 1.

Removal of MLG Ball Screw Assembly. Use a Regent 1921 or equivalent portable axle jack to raise and lower the strut as needed during the removal and replacement of the ball screw. A. Jack the airplane and remove the wheel and tire of the gear being changed. B. Remove the hardboard liner to gain access to the vertical torque shaft access door and the lower shoe inspection window. C. Remove the inspection door and the upper access door. D. Remove the vertical torque shaft. E. Remove the four bolts from the upper pillow block assembly, and remove the pillow block and shim. F. Remove the nuts from the lower ball nut assembly. G. Remove the ball screw retainer nut and friction washer from the lower end of the ball screw. H. Turn the ball screw by hand until the ball nut is just below the upper shoe. I. Remove the trunnion bearing block retainer bolts. NOTE: J. K.

L.

The gear can be jacked to facilitate this step if necessary. Drop the ball screw and the trunnion below the lower shoe, and remove the trunnion and bearing blocks. Use an axle jack under the gear concerned, and raise the strut until the landing gear upper shoe is just above the upper access opening, thus allowing the ball nut to enter the opening. Place a bolt in the ball nut assembly to keep the two sections aligned. Rotate the ball nut assembly 90 degrees from its normal position and pull the ball screw assembly as far inboard against the inner wheel well as possible.

Slowly lower the landing gear with the jack and guide the ball nut assembly so that it clears the upper swivel bracket as the gear is extended. It is necessary to perform this operation slowly as the clearance is very small. With the gear fully extended, raise the ball screw enough to clear the upper swivel bracket. Pivot the screw assembly aft, and lower it through the wheel well. CAUTION:

AVOID DAMAGE TO THE TRUNNION OIL SEAL WHILE REMOVING AND REPLACING THE TRUNNION.

Installation of MLG Ball Screw Assembly. A. Raise the ball screw assembly above the upper swivel bracket, and then lower the ball screw through the upper swivel bracket. B. Hold the ball nut assembly as close as possible to the upper shoe access opening, and slowly raise the landing gear with the jack until the upper swivel clears the ball nut assembly. Perform this operation slowly; the clearance is very small. C. Position the ball screw through the self bracket, and replace the trunnion and bearing blocks on the ball screw. D. Position the trunnion and bearing blocks in the self bracket, and install the trunnion and bearing retainer bolts. E. Rotate the ball screw by hand to lower the ball nut assembly. Lower the landing gear to the fully extended position. F. Replace the ball screw retainer nut and friction washer on the lower end of the ball screw. G. Reinstall the ball nut assembly to the lower strut support. H. Replace the four bolts that hold the upper pillow block assembly and shim to the structure. Reconnect the vertical torque shaft assembly. Maintain proper ball screw synchronization. Replace the upper shoe access door and the inspection door. Then replace the hardboard liner. Install the wheel and tire assembly. Tighten the ball screw retainer nut at the bottom of the ball screw finger tight. Then back off the nut to the nearest slot to line up the lock-hole in the screw. Check for a 0.005 inch minimum clearance between the friction washer and the spacer. If the clearance is less than 0.005 inch, back off the nut to the next nearest slot, and install the lock-screw and nut. Adjust the nut to the next nearest slot and install the lock-screw and nut. Adjust the lockout to a torque value of 12 to 15 inch-pounds. Record serial numbers. Perform a retraction test.
