Tiffany Uy: Excellent College Journey

College Life College introduces to us the courses or careers that will be doing for a long time. It gives us choices on what we want to be. College is where many students tend to shift careers because they start to find what they want. College life is where a student starts to know more of themselves, they start to know what their weaknesses and strength is, this also helps them develop their skills or be able to find a skill-based on what career they may get. Some students positively view college life, because they tend to experience things while in college such as finding a true friend that could last long, conquering fears, being able to express itself more, being an honor student, or enjoying the whole college year. But others view it negatively because they think that college is hard, or that they may not pass college. This kind of thinking cause a person to change, such as being depressed or some could become alcoholic because of wanting to ease their feeling about college life. According to Zitouni Layachi from odyssey HQ, he has posted a question on What Is College Life is? Can college change you as a person? He stated that College is tough if you make it tough and do not put in the time and effort to achieve greatness. Success is a bit of luck and hard work (Jul 25, 2016). We are free to think that college life is somehow hard if we do our best but still had a hard time.

On a written Article of Chris Drew, PhD / June 19, 2019. There are 13 Qualities of a Good College Student. These views were pointing on a face-to-face class system. The qualities are as follows: 1. They Have a Growth Mindset Good college students have a growth mindset. What does that mean? It means you believe success is in your grasp. You have the power to succeed. People with a growth mindset think of talents and abilities as things they can develop—as potentials that come to fruition through effort, practice, and instruction. In the growth mindset, talent is something you build on and develop, not something you simply display to the world and try to coast to success on. In other words, a person with a growth mindset believes in themselves. They don’t sit back and think “Oh, I can’t do it. I’m just not quite smart enough.” No, they believe in their own ability. Students with a growth mindset know that with hard work, commitment and a lot of trial and error they can succeed! The best students didn’t become the best students out of the blue. They worked hard – very hard – for what they’ve got. It’s not that everyone’s equal and out world is a meritocracy. Some people are born with natural skills. But for the rest of us, we’ll get where we will get after pain, hard work and a whole lot of failures. And that’s okay. Good students know it’s a long path of hard work, but they know they can get there in the end. 2. They Make Changes When things are going tough, good students don’t give up. And yes, they believe they can achieve success through it all. But they don’t just keep bashing their heads up against a wall. They do something when things get tough. Students need to try new strategies and seek input from others when they’re stuck. Ask your teacher for help: When you don’t understand something, you need to find some help. You need to go to your teacher’s open office hours, talk to them after class and send them emails to get through the things you’re finding tough. Get an online tutor: If you’re not doing well, ask for help! We’re in the age of the internet! Study differently: There’s a ton of different study strategies. Choose one and if it fails, choose another! The point is this: good students don’t just believe they can succeed. They take action to make sure that success is within their grasp.

3. They’re Determined Dig deep when it gets hard. Don’t give up. That’s what makes you a good student. People with determination put their head down and study when it sucks, when they’re tired and when the subject is the most boring thing on earth. There are a few things I do to help me sustain my determination. Here’s a few: I write down a list of goals I want to achieve: Well, two lists. I write down what I want to achieve in the medium term. This is the next 6 to 12 months: Do I want to raise my GPA? Do I want a particular grade in this subject I’m studying? Then, I write down what I want to achieve today. These small step goals keep me motivated and on track. I visualize my long-term goals: You know how I do this? I go onto job search websites and find the job I really This makes me go: this is the reason I’m studying today. This is the reason I’m going to drag myself out of bed and write that damn character analysis essay. And I’ll do it well! The best students use these strategies and more to maintain their motivation and inspiration. Put your head down and work. That’s the way you succeed. 4. They’re Resourceful Good students have many, many resources at their disposal. And they’re resources you won’t expect. No, I’m not talking about having a good laptop or every single textbook sitting on your bookshelves. No, I mean the exact opposite. Resourcefulness means getting access to things even when it’s hard. Instead of buying every book ever, they go to the library and use the books on the library shelves. When their laptop breaks, they don’t despair. They use the computers at their public library. They talk to their professor whenever they need help. They also have a lot of different study spaces at hand so they always have a place to study. And they also make the most of their friends and classmates. Yes, your peers are one of your greatest resources. Organize group study sessions. Ask around for help. Join Facebook groups. Try your best to make friends. Because your classmates are a great resource.

Character of a College student. This characteristic will value both learning systems. Since being a college student is the hardest part of Education. Students have different moods with in terms of studying. Some of us are well enough while some of us are still adjusting on the life we are taking. As a college student we can see that we are starting to change in our personalities and values. The change that occurs is the first character we have. Next, we have adaptive characteristics wherein we are adjusting on all the methods we can to succeed the life of being a student, especially when we are freshmen. We began to be openminded in different situations. For example, considering and thinking of something wide before we speak. We can all agree that college without friends is not easy, so if we are introvert on our past school days. We can say that our friendly skills are starting to grow now. We become optimistic in a way that we see all things can be better. In order to be calm and comfortable in all the adjustments, task or activities we need to take. Developing the good personality is one of the most important keys that can help us to succeed the life we are taking.

5. They’re Reflective, Thoughtful and Humble Were those three things? But they’re all interrelated. Reflection means looking at yourself and questioning your choices and decisions. It means seeing how you could do things different next time. Reflection is so, so important. Why? Reflection helps you to improve in the future. If you don’t look inward at what you’ve done wrong, then you won’t ever improve. It’s funny, but…The angriest emails I get are from students who did terribly in their assignments. And instead of asking how they improve; they spray me with self-indulgent anger. They tell me how wrong I am. They blame everything except themselves. And they don’t ask for help. Those students don’t have a growth mindset. But other students…They email me and humbly ask where they went wrong. They ask me for additional support and feedback. These are the best students. They realize they could do better and they think hard about how they can get better. These students are reflective, thoughtful and humble. 6. They’re A Good Listener Listening matters. Sometimes I’m sitting in a lecture and I find it so boring. It’s so hard to listen while the teacher drones on and on and on about … goodness knows what. But as a student, you’ve got to spend a lot more time listening than talking. One of my favorite strategies for being a good listener and learner is this: When you contribute to your class seminar discussion, listen to others and reply to their points. Don’t just say whatever you want. Good contributors listen to and answer others. Some students just want to tell everyone their opinion. A good student contributes to and builds upon other people’s opinions. And to do that, you have to listen. Here’s another strategy. Pay very close attention in your lectures. why? Because we professors always sneakily squeeze in important tips, tricks and answers for your assessments. We do this to reward good listeners. And of course, to reward the people who turn up to class.

7. They’re Inspired Why are you at university? It should be because you want something. You feel it in your gut. You want to change the world, or build a business, or become like someone you admire. The best students are always inspired by a big vision. They have the fire in their belly to succeed. So, what can you do if you’re not inspired? Well for one thing, maybe think about whether college is really for you. Maybe it’s not! Maybe you’ll feel more inspired travelling, or becoming a police officer … or whatever. I always recommend to my students who are feeling uninspired to do a volunteer work placement to see what your life will be like postdegree. I find that’s a great way to get my students inspired. 8. They are Risk Takers If you don’t take risks, you won’t improve. Taking risks has multiple benefits. Here’s just a couple: You will push beyond your limits. If you just play it safe, you’ll never progress! Imagine if you didn’t put yourself out there? You won’t learn new things, you won’t ever achieve the benefits of the risks, and you’ll … frankly, just be stuck in the mud. You will change your mindset. As you begin to realize you’re capable of new things, your horizons will broaden and you’ll start taking more and more measured risks. It’s a snowball effect that will give you big rewards in the long run. So how can students take risk? Here’s a few ways: • Put your hand up in class! As a professor, I get so frustrated when the students sit around starting at me expecting me to perform. It’s your seminar! Get involved, ask questions, and stop caring so much what the boy in the back row things about you. • Try different classes. When it’s time to select your next semester’s classes, have a go at something new. I started out thinking I was all about science. Then I took a chance, did a sociology elective, and by the end of my undergrad I became a sociology major. You never know what doors open for you when you try out a new class! 9. They’re Organized As my scout troop leader used to say. “Be Prepared!” Organization is a secret weapon of top students. You won’t find many top students leaving their essays to the last minute. Instead, they’ll get started really early and finish well ahead of time. This gives that top student the freedom to make mistakes, change their mind and absorb life’s challenges, all while submitting a top-quality assessment piece. You’ll also find top students have amazing abilities to sort their study notes. They print and read their lecture slides before class and do the readings every single week. This means when they get to class, they’re not playing catch-ups! They know what the teacher’s talking about and they can engage in dialogue with the teacher at a higher level.

10. They’re Curious There’s a word for people who teach themselves everything: Autodidactic. An autodidact is a person who won’t wait for their teacher to spoon feed them information. Instead, autodidacts read books, blogs and trade magazines. When their teacher mentions something interesting, they make the effort to dig deep and do some extra reading on that topic. This gives them a huge advantage when it comes to exams because they end up with a huge base of contextual knowledge. Personally, I’m very curious. But I also hate reading books. So, I satisfy my curiosity by listening to podcasts. Podcasts are an amazing source for getting information by spoken word while you clean your house or do some exercise. If you want to become a top student, start being curious. Teach yourself things, seek out knowledge, and don’t wait for your teacher to hand it to you. By that point, it’s too late: you’ll be lost in the pack of ordinary, mediocre students.

11. They’re Self-Starters Look, I tell my students this all the time: getting top marks doesn’t mean anything if you don’t have extracurricular at the end. You don’t want to sit around waiting for your degree to end, then go to the job interviews and have nothing else to say but “Look at my degree!” Everyone’s got a degree, kid. Sorry. So, what makes you look like you were the top student – and top candidate – in that job interview at the end of this road? It’s that summer you spent volunteering. Top students get up and make things happen. They go into the office of the firm in town and say “hey, can you let me do an internship or volunteer position for a few weeks?” These students have shown they’ve got what it takes: initiative. It’s that blog you run. If you can go up to a potential employer and say “Hey, I’ve got a degree like the rest of the suckers in the hallway. But look, I’ve also got two years’ worth of info on industry news that I’ve written about on by website. Look how knowledgeable and interested I am in this career. It’s that college club you’re a member of. If you’re studying environmental studies, join the college environment club. Get some experience doing something. Don’t just rely on your degree to do the talking for you. Great students put their degree into action now. Not later. 12. They’re Involved The world is run by those who show up. So, show up. Getting involved in things on campus has some amazing benefits. One way to get involved is to take a position as a research assistant for your professor. Here’s a story. When I was a professor in a British university, I used to hire two research assistants per year. Usually, they’d be students from my classes. These students got a lot more out of the experience than another line on their resume. They really got to know their professor. They learnt how I tick, what I expect of my students, and what I see as a high standard essay. All of those students ended up getting great marks. Why? Because they showed up, got involved, and learnt a lot along the way. I also recommend to my students that they join study groups. As I’ve written about previously, study groups have great benefits for learners. You get to see other people’s perspectives on topics. You get to make studying more fun. And, social interaction can be good for your mental health. So, get involved. 13. They’re Resilient Resilience is the ability to bounce back when things get tough. All students fail to meet their goals at some point – even the best. But what separates the good students from the bad is that good students bounce back. You see, being a good student isn’t so much about innate ability. It’s about putting in the hours when studying is the last thing you want to do. It’s about being the student who arrived first and left last. It’s about being the student who refused to go down without giving it their all. Here’s what I recommend. 1. Build a support base. Have study buddies, friends and family to lean on. When things get hard, talk things through with them and come up with a plan moving forward. 2. Have a life outside of university. If college is your whole life, you’ll be extra devastated when things go wrong. Make sure you have sporting events, friends or clubs outside of university so you can take a break from the bubble of university life. 3. Use your feedback wisely. As I argue in my post on using feedback, you need to see where you went wrong in order to improve. Read all the feedback your teacher writes for you. Ask them questions about it. Insist on understanding it. And implement it in your next assessment piece.

On an article written by the Clarke University. That this are the Essential Skills for College Students: People always say that college is not that easy. It requires a lot of adjusting since you will be given with freedom and a lot of responsibilities during this phase of your life. Unlike high school where you can play around and forget about the responsibilities you have. With that being said, it is important to be aware of the skills that you must value once you enter college.

College Skills: 3M Skills (Time Management, Stress Management, Money Management)

• Time Management

College workload is not a joke, it will consume all of your time if you do not know how to properly manage it. That is why it is really important to learn time management. You have to plan ahead and schedule everything that must be done and submitted so you don’t have to worry about the deadlines. Remember, due date is not do date. Be responsible and learn how to manage your time wisely.

• Money Management

• Stress Management

The word stressful is not enough to describe how mentally tiring college is. So, in order to cope up, you must learn how to manage your stress. Do not forget to rest and go easy on yourself. Get adequate sleep and start exercising because it can be very helpful in diverting your attention from school related problems.

College is like your entrance to adulthood, at this point in time you must be able to learn how to budget your money. There will be a lot of expenses in college including printing fees, transportation expenses and of course food expenses. Start practicing being mindful on your expenses and prioritize your needs over your wants. Research Skills This is one of the most important skills that you must value as a college student. In college, you will have to do a lot of researches. In high school, you can run away from your research responsibilities but not in college. Most of the times, research during college is given as an individual task. So, you will really have to work on your research skills. Communication Skills College is a start of a new chapter in your life which means you will meet new set of people. In order to form a bond with them you must have good communication skills. Just like what they say, no man is an island. You will need to make friends so start socializing with them and hone your socializing skills. Those were just a few college skills that a college student like you must possess in order to survive and have fun. It will take you quite some time before you will be able to adjust but just follow this list of skills and you’ll no longer have to worry about your college life.

TRAVEL

On an article written by Matty G from NOMADS - Why Do People Travel? Most people at some point in their life will have an urge to travel. This may be a two-week holiday to somewhere warm to top up your suntan or it could be a life changing year, or longer, trip. Everyone has their own reasons that they decide to travel but most people are triggered by something. This is often a life-changing event or it could be a sudden change of feeling giving you the desire to fly the nest and set off on an adventure. After speaking to people, I have met travelling, I have discovered, what I believe, are the main reasons why people travel.

1. To Visit Family Some family members move to another country. It can be on the other side of the world or just in another country next to yours. No matter where they are you will want to visit them at some point or another. 2. To Spend Time With friends A Gap Year or world trip can be described as the best time of your life. The memories you will make are enough to last you a life time, what better way to enjoy these memories than with friends. Planning a holiday with friends can be a great way to say goodbye before heading off to college / uni or just a great thing to do together as something you will always remember. 3. To Discover New Cultures Some people like adventures and to escape their normal monotonous life. They like not knowing what they can expect and want to deepen their knowledge in other lifestyles. 4. To Find Themselves This is a very common one, and this one in particular seems to be triggered by a life-changing event at home. It could be that you lost your job, a long-term relationship broke up, you finished university and still have no idea what you want to do as a career or it could be the loss of a loved one. 5. To Find Love Are you unlucky in love? Live in a small town and just can’t meet anyone? Then go travelling! The very least you’ll find is someone with the same desire to travel and experience different countries and cultures as you.

Values of a college student:

1

Take care of your health. Taking care of your health should be mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Sleeping enough, eating right, exercising daily, staying true to yourself, and taking a break should be applied to yourself.

2

Learn everything. Take the opportunity to learn as much as possible, even about the little things. You never know what might spark your interest. Don't keep your mind closed to one subject.

3

Be focused but flexible. Things won't always go the way you want them to hence if you can stay flexible, you'll stay focused. The world isn't permanent, it will (and should) change within the next 10-20 years.

4

Keep it balanced. Don't focus too much on one thing. It's okay to be a workaholic when it comes to your work or doing your schoolworks, but don't forget to have fun as well.

5

Maintain integrity. If you say something, do it. Being honest with others and keeping to your word will make you a lot happier with yourself.

6

Show respect. Respect everyone and anyone, they are human just as you are. Be sure to treat everyone equally and with respect. Don't let your head get too big, and remember to keep your feet to the ground.

7

Always keep a sense of humor. We are human, we will make mistakes. Don't take yourself too seriously or you'll be another person alive on this earth, not someone who actually lives.

8

Hold yourself accountable. Manage your work and life tasks. Accept the outcomes of your decision-making processes and assess any changes you want to make in the future.

On an article written by the Campus Explorer, they have given Best Study Tips for College Students: 1. Stay organized Keep a detailed calendar with all your commitments, including classwork, social events and extracurricular activities. This way, you can block out time each day to study.

2. Don't Cram It’s definitely tempting to put off you’re studying until the last minute, but you’re much less likely to retain information this way. 3. Don’t Over-Study Among study tips for college students, time management is one of the most essential. Make sure you’re studying the key ideas of each lecture or textbook chapter, and avoid absorbing useless information.

4. Find Your Zone Everyone has their perfect study environment. For some, it’s a quiet reading room, while others prefer the bustle of a coffee shop. Some like to listen to music while they study, and some need complete silence.

5. Take a Break! No, really, you’ve earned it! Take a ten-minute break every hour or so, and try to take a day or two off per week if you can. It’ll help you stay energized and at peak mental condition.

On an article written by Raymond Gerson from YOUniversityTV, there are 10 Steps to Succeed in College: 1. Be in class. Being on time and maintaining good attendance are important. 2. Take notes. TIFFANY UY: EXCELLENT COLLEGE JOURNEY

By now, the Filipino people know her story—Tiffany Grace Uy, is the 22-year-old BS Biology student who aced all her subjects except for one and graduated in University of the Philippines Diliman with the weighted grade average of 1.004, the highest achieved in the UP’s history since World War II. But she is not your usual overachiever. In an interview with INQUIRER.net, Uy shared how a Pokemon character taught her to be selfless, remembered how she tried cooking but her family found it indigestible and shared that just like any college student, she also failed in exams and procrastinated to finish class assignments and activities. Achieving a historic feat might make someone tear up for happiness but when Uy was notified that she got the highest grade in UP, she was at the ladies comfort room.

“I actually had been struck by a damaging case of amoebiasis when the news came out. I was in and out of the comfort room, and I was thanking the congratulating family and friends from my toilet,” she said.

She said that the news that her WAG surpassed the grade of 2011 BS Mathematics graduate John Gabriel Pelias of 1.016, shocked her and her family since she does not compute her grades.

She said that she was shocked herself, as well as her family. They were happy for her achievement since they had witness her struggles and sacrifices to reach that achievement. She also stated that there were no crazy hoopla, they spent it for every other normal day. Except with that day that she was stuck in the toilet for having an amoebiasis. Uy stated that she got 1.25 in

Art Studies, that was the only subject which tarnished her perfect “uno” streak.

Tiffany Uy said that uno was never the goal in achieving her dreams. The 22-year-old student said that she is attentive in her studies not because she struggles to get the highest marks but because it will help her when she becomes a doctor. Whenever she come to her class, she take her subjects seriously because she was thinking that anything she might learn, might save her life someday. Rather than worrying about her numerical status, she works hard to ensure that she definitely understand the subjects she were taking.

She shared her story of her desire to become a doctor. According to Uy, it started when she was treated for head injuries at age six. Since then, she worked really hard to unlock her goal to become a doctor. saying that she studied her lessons three to four times. But that does not mean that she did not fail an exam, nor procrastinate for a subject requirement.

“I have the worst study habits: I procrastinate a lot, and cram a lot, and pass Formal Reports at the very last minute— the 59th minute of 11 p.m! But when I do cram, I cram tough. On each and every project, I work very hard because my motivation is to understand the subject matter, so that someday I can use it to save lives,” Uy said.

While growing up, she said that she was not forced to become an achiever, despite being born to parents who are doctors. Uy said that, when she work really hard, her parents did not like it and they always told her about the “Golden Moderation”, which means that she did not just work hard but she also played harder than they thought.

“I get addicted to watching anime shows, Korean reality TV shows, eat a lot of junk food, catch up on 9gag once in a while. But I have very weird interests. There was one summer I spent learning Chinese calligraphy. Another summer I tried to learn basic flute, to the chagrin of my teacher because I was really bad at it. The next summer I went to learn how to fix computer hardware, breaking open a CPU and then putting things back together,” Uy said.

She spent her time not only in academic but also, she spent her time doing the things she love to do and trying things she did not experience doing in life yet. She made everything in moderation, trying to balance what she loves to do and working really hard in terms of academic purposes. Tiffany Uy is one of the inspirations of young people to excel in college and to excel in life also.
