Del Director General Estimada comunidad de St. Hilda’s: La Copa Mundial de Rugby de 2015 llega a su fin este fin de semana con la final el sábado (¡en la cual tengo un fuerte interés personal!) y con Argentina jugando por el 3º/4º puesto el viernes por la tarde. Todos hemos disfrutado del torneo y podemos estar muy orgullosos de lo que lograron Los Pumas quienes jugaron combinando la fortaleza tradicional del rugby argentino con la capacidad de ataque y juego positivo. Sin embargo, si uno mira la historia y los acontecimientos recientes, me gustaría destacar dos lecciones de vida que dejó esta Copa Mundial de Rugby. Después de su actuación estelar en la Copa Mundial de Rugby del 2007 en donde lograron el 3er puesto, Argentina solicitó formar parte del campeonato de las 6 Naciones. Le respuesta fue no, por lo que la UAR se vio obligada a buscar competir en otro lado. Eventualmente, en 2012 los invitaron a formar parte del “Rugby Championship”, y el corolario de este relato se traduce en estos logros recientes. Las dos lecciones de las que creo podemos aprender son, en primer lugar, que en 2007 hubo un impulso por mejorar y no dejarse estar con un solo logro excepcional. Debemos disfrutar de nuestros éxitos, pero darnos cuenta que debemos seguir intentando mejorar si los queremos repetir o superar. El 3er lugar fue un gran logro, pero si el objetivo era el título de Campeones Mundiales de Rugby, había que intentar crecer más y hacerlo de forma continua. Esta visión y compromiso hacia un objetivo aún más ambicioso son lo que nos ayuda a mejorar y son necesarios si hemos de alcanzar nuestro máximo potencial. La segunda lección es que una decepción de corto plazo, es decir el no ser aceptados en las 6 Naciones, de hecho puede ser mejor ya que nos obliga a aceptar el rechazo y a buscar en otro lugar, explorar otras opciones que, a largo plazo, podrían ser más apropiadas y con mejores recompensas. La desilusión y el rechazo son parte de la vida y deberían utilizarse como escalones hacia el éxito. Una vez Rudyard Kipling escribió:

Si puedes encontrarte con Triunfo y Adversidad y tratar a esos dos impostores del mismo modo... Tuya es la Tierra y todo lo que hay en ella La UAR es encomiable por su visión y empuje por tornar el triunfo (lograr el 3er puesto en 2007) y la adversidad (no ser aceptada en las 6 Naciones) en éxito, y deseo continúen en este trayecto. Espero podamos aprender de su ejemplo y aplicar estos conceptos a nuestros propios esfuerzos. Felicito a nuestro equipo Senior de fútbol femenino que ganó la competencia de la ADE el sábado pasado. Su desempeño fue muy meritorio y uno para ser disfrutado, pero ahora deseamos lograr un mayor éxito en otras áreas. Para finalizar, me ausentaré del colegio desde el miércoles 4 hasta el lunes 9 de noviembre, ya que asistiré a una conferencia educativa en Singapur el fin de semana del 6 - 8. Me invitaron para representar al Latin American Heads Conference (Congreso Latinoamericano de Directores), un grupo de 42 colegios, incluyendo el nuestro, que están comprometidos en mejorar la práctica educativa en América Latina. Me siento honrado que nuestro colegio haya recibido esta oportunidad y confío en que podré traer de vuelta información valiosa sobre las prácticas educativas más recientes, entre otras. El Colegio Santa Hilda es un lugar muy especial para recibir una educación. Viniendo de un colegio de preparación militar en los Estados Unidos, fui afortunado al poder experimentar a la Argentina no sólo en su aspecto cultural, sino también desde un punto de vista académico. Aparte de la educación académica sobresaliente de St. Hilda’s, el ánimo y el carácter de los alumnos era único. A pesar de que era el alumno nuevo, nadie vaciló en hacerme sentir parte del grupo. Lo más destacado que noté del colegio fue el Departamento de Idiomas. Aprender un idioma desde tan temprana edad como lo hacen los alumnos de St. Hilda’s, les da una ventaja incalculable y desearía que esto fuera más frecuente en los Estados Unidos. Agradezco al Sr. Prettejohn y al Sr. Gregory por aceptarme dentro del colegio y permitirme ser parte de esta comunidad especial, comunidad que han trabajado tan duro para establecer y mantener. Agradezco a todos los docentes que trabajaron conmigo y me ayudaron a mejorar mi castellano y a crecer como estudiante. Por último, me gustaría agradecer específicamente a las familias Kon y Pérez de Solay por darme un gran apoyo durante mi estadía en la Argentina. Realmente me sentí como en casa con ambas familias y no puedo describir cuán agradecido estoy por su hospitalidad y apoyo. Música Encuentro de Orquestas El viernes 23 de octubre a las 17.30 hs se llevó a cabo el Encuentro de Orquestas en el Belgrano Day School. En primer lugar, la orquesta anfitriona interpretó arreglos de conocidas obras sinfónicas. Sobresalió la potente

percusión tanto como el sonido de las trompetas y el piano. Luego nuestra Orquesta de Intermedia realizó unas muy afinadas interpretaciones de Czech Folk Song, Capullito de Alelí y del tema principal de Star Wars. Audiciones

Esta semana se llevaron a cabo las audiciones de música de fin de año. Los alumnos presentaron melodías trabajadas durante el segundo semestre. Algunos lo hicieron solos y otros en pequeños ensambles. Esta audición fue la última para cuatro alumnos que egresan y que han participado en todas las audiciones desde que estaban en Año 4. Año tras año los hemos visto trabajar de manera constante con pasión y compromiso hasta convertirse hoy en día en verdaderos modelos para las nuevas generaciones de estudiantes de música en St. Hilda’s. Deportes Interhouse Atletismo Under 10 El sábado pasado se desarrolló el Interhouse de Atletismo Under 10. Este evento involucra alumnos de Sala de 5 de Jardín de Infantes a Año 3 del Primario. Compitieron en salto en largo, velocidad, lanzamiento de Hockey ball, carreras de obstáculos, vallas y postas. Cada alumno suma puntos en cada disciplina y la suma total determina al House campeón. Concurrió gran cantidad de padres que participaron de varios juegos propuestos por el Departamento de Educación Física y también en la posta de padres, siempre compitiendo para sus respectivos Houses. Nunca se deja de lado el condimento lúdico, es decir, los elementos relacionados al juego. La Sala de 5 se incorporó el año pasado con el objetivo de ir integrándolos al nivel primario, ya que quedan pocos meses para este cambio. Los resultados del evento son los siguientes: 3º puesto: St. Paul’s; 2º puesto: St. Peter’s... CAMPEON: St. John’s

Quiero felicitar a todos los alumnos por su participación y espíritu de competencia en este evento, a los padres y familiares que nos acompañaron en esta jornada y jugaron junto a nosotros, a los docentes y directivos y staff de Educación Física por su entrega. Torneo ADE Senior Niñas de Fútbol El sábado 24 se llevó a cabo el torneo ADE de fútbol para categoría Senior  Mujeres en St. George’s College. Nuestras alumnas fueron dirigidas por la profesora Laura Mulhall, capitaneadas por Candela Bermejo y acompañadas por la profesora Marina Black y la exalumna Denise Metzger. Empataron con St. George’s College, ganaron a Belgrano Day School y luego de ganarle a San Marcos de San Isidro, ganaron la final a St. George’s Quilmes “A”, resultando campeonas del torneo. Comunicado Semanal 30 de octubre de 2015 - HOJA 5/5 Felicitaciones a todos los participantes de este torneo por traer la copa a St. Hilda’s College. Torneo ADE Senior Varones de Fútbol El sábado pasado nuestros alumnos varones de categoría Senior participaron del torneo ADE de fútbol. Tuvieron un gran comienzo ganándole a Michael Ham por uno a cero, empataron con St. John’s uno a uno y ganaron ante San Marcos de San Isidro por dos a cero. Estos resultados los posicionaron primeros en la zona y le dieron el pase a la zona de oro para competir por la copa del torneo. Aquí perdieron tres a cero con el Colegio Northlands, dejando a nuestro Colegio fuera de competencia en cuartos de final. Felicitaciones a los alumnos por su esfuerzo y entrega en cada partido. Equipo de Orientación Escolar Charla sobre la Adolescencia El miércoles le dimos la bienvenida al Lic. Matías Muñoz quien dio una charla a padres sobre adolescentes. En la charla resaltó la importancia de:

v cambiar la mirada: no mirar a nuestros hijos adolescentes desde lo que carecen sino desde sus talentos y potenciales. Y hacérselos saber. v aceptar que la revolución digital ha impulsado un cambio cultural muy fuerte, donde nuestros hijos son “nativos” y los padres “turistas”, razón por la cual debe darse una cooperación intergeneracional. v ser conscientes de los nuevos cambios que los adultos no vivenciamos: la búsqueda de la satisfacción en el presente, el bajo umbral de tolerancia a la frustración y a la espera, la rapidez para procesar información (por eso las charlas padres/hijos tienen que ser cortas y concisas). v sabiendo que sin frustración.... no hay crecimiento. Dejar que los chicos se aburran no está mal. v dejar que resuelvan autónomamente sus temas escolares, de amistades. Dejarles un margen de decisión en su vida y que no todo esté resuelto por papá y mamá. v brindarles herramientas, desde muy chiquitos, para que tengan proyectos que les llenen la vida. v valorar su pasión y aptitudes. v marcar límites y demostrar nuestro amor también. v educarlos en la empatía, compasión y liderazgo para tomar decisiones. v enseñar valores desde lo vivencial: somos espejos.

Headmaster’s Notes Dear St. Hilda’s community, The 2015 Rugby World Cup draws to a close this weekend with the final on Saturday (in which I have a strong interest!) and Argentina playing in the 3rd/4th place payoff game on Friday afternoon. We have all enjoyed the tournament and can be very proud of the achievements of the Pumas who have played in a manner which blended the traditional strengths of Argentine rugby with attacking flair and positive play. However, I would like to highlight two broader life lessons that are to be learned from this RWC if one looks at history and recent developments. After their stellar performances in gaining 3rd place in the Rugby World Cup of 2007, Argentina asked to be allowed to join the 6 Nations Championship. The answer given was no, so the ARU were forced to look elsewhere for regular competition. They were eventually invited to play in the Rugby Championship, starting in 2012, and the rest of the story is seen with these recent achievements. The two lessons I believe we can learn are firstly that, in 2007, there was a drive to continue to improve and not relax on a single outstanding achievement. We must enjoy our successes but realise that we need to continue to seek improvement if we want to repeat or exceed them. Third place was a great achievement but if the title of Rugby World Champions was to be gained, further and continued development had to occur. This vision and commitment to a higher goal is what helps us all improve and is necessary if we are to achieve our maximum potential. The second lesson is that short term disappointment ie not being accepted into the 6 Nations, may in fact be the best thing as it forces us to accept rejection and look elsewhere, exploring other options which in the longer term may prove to be more appropriate and achieve better rewards. Disappointment and rejection are part of life and should be utilised as stepping stones to further success. Rudyard Kipling once wrote:

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same… Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it The ARU are to be applauded for their vision and drive to turn both triumph (achieving 3rd place in 2007) and disaster (not being accepted into the 6 Nations) into success and I really hope that they will continue with this journey. May we learn from their example and apply these concepts towards our own endeavours. I want to congratulate our Senior Girls football team who won the ADE competition last Saturday. It is a very meritorious performance and one to be enjoyed, but we now look forward to achieving further success in other areas. Finally, I will not be at school from Wednesday 4 November until Monday 9 November as I will be attending an educational conference in Singapore over the weekend of 6 - 8 November. I have been invited as a guest to represent the Latin American Heads Conference, a group of 42 schools, including our own, who are committed to improving educational practice throughout Latin America. I feel honoured for our school to be given this opportunity and trust that I will be able to bring back valuable information about the latest educational practices etc. In my absence, Mr Chris Prettejohn, supported by Ms María Jesus, will be acting Headmaster. St. Hilda’s College is a very special place to receive an education. Coming from a military prep school in the United States, I was fortunate enough to experience not only Argentina from a cultural aspect, but also from an academic aspect. Apart from the excelling academics at St. Hilda’s, the morale and character of the students was very unique. Even though I was the new student, nobody hesitated to make me feel included with the rest of the student body. The most prominent facet of the school that I noticed was the language department. Learning a language from such a young age, as the St. Hilda’s students do, provides an incalculable advantage and I wish that this was more common in the U.S. Thank you Mr. Prettejohn and Mr. Gregory for accepting me into the school and allowing me to be a part of the special community that you have worked so hard to create and maintain. Thank you to all the teachers that worked with me and helped me improve my Spanish skills and grow as a student. Lastly, I would specifically like to thank the Kon and Pérez de Solay families for providing me with such great support during my stay in Argentina. I truly felt at home with both of these families and cannot describe how thankful I am for their hospitality and support. I believe it’s safe to say that without everyone’s effort, this experience would’ve been impossible. Thank you again to everyone at St. Hilda’s for an experience that will stay with me forever. Brad

Music Orchestra Festival The orchestra festival was held at Belgrano Day School on Friday 23 October at 5.30 pm. Firstly, the hosting orchestra played arrangements of wellknown symphonic pieces. The powerful percussion

as well as the trumpets and piano were outstanding. Then our Intermediate Orchestra performed well-tuned performances of Czech Folk Song, Capullito de Aleli and the Star Wars main theme. Student Individual Performances

This week the end-of-year music student individual performances took place. Students presented melodies studied during the second semester. Some played solos and others in small ensembles. This event was the last for four graduating students who have participated in all the individual performances since they were in Year 4. Year after year we have seen them work steadily, with passion and commitment becoming real role models for the new generations of music students at St. Hilda’s. Sports Under 10 Athletics Interhouse The Under 10 Athletics Interhouse took place last Saturday. Kindergarten 5-year-old’s to Year 3 Primary school students took part. The students competed in long jump, speed, Hockey ball, and obstacle, hurdle and relay races. Students receive points for competing in each discipline which are later added up to determine the House champion. A large number of parents were present and participated in various games organised by the P. E. Department and also in the parents’ relay race, always competing for their respective houses. The ‘fun’ element was always present at the games. As of last year we included the 5-year-olds in this event to start integrating them to the Primary school, as in a few months they will be completing their Kindergarten education. The results of the event are as follows: 3rd place: St. Paul’s; 2nd place: St Peter’s and... CHAMPION: St. John’s

Congratulations to the students for their participation and spirit during this event; to the parents and families who joined us on this day and played with us; and to the teachers, heads and P E staff for their dedication. Senior Girls ADE Football The ADE football tournament for the Senior Girls category was held at St. George’s College on Saturday 24. Our students were coached by Laura Mulhall, captained by Candela Bermejo and accompanied by teacher Marina Black and former student Denise Metzger. They tied with St. George’s College, beat Belgrano Day School and after beating Saint Mark’s (San Isidro), they won the final round to St. George’s Quilmes “A” to become champions of the tournament. Senior Boys ADE Football Last Saturday our Senior Boys category students took part in the ADE football tournament. They had a great start beating Michael Ham by one on zero, tying with St. John’s one on one and beating Saint Mark’s San Isidro by two to zero. These results placed them first in their area and gave them way to the Gold zone to compete for the tournament cup. Here they lost three-nil against Northlands College, leaving our school out of the competition in the quarterfinals. Congratulations to the students for their effort and commitment in every game. School Counselling Team Talk on Adolescence On Wednesday we welcomed Lic. Matías Muñoz, who delivered a talk for parents on teenagers. He emphasized the importance of:

v changing the way we look at our teenage children - not just by focussing on what they lack, but on the talents and potential they have. And then encouraging the latter. v accepting the fact that the digital revolution has brought about a powerful cultural change in which children are “natives” and parents “tourists”. Therefore an intergenerational cooperation is a must. v being aware of the new changes we, adults, did not experience: the search for instant gratification, the low threshold of tolerance to frustration and to waiting, the speed to process information (that is why conversations between parents/children must be short and concise). v knowing that without frustration… there is no growth. Letting our children get bored is not wrong. v encouraging them to resolve their school and friendship issues by themselves, and not having mum and dad solve everything for them. v giving them, at an early age, the necessary tools to achieve fulfilling projects. v appreciating their passion and aptitudes. v setting limits and showing our love as well. v educating them towards empathy, compassion and leadership to be able to take decisions. v teaching them values through our own examples: we are the mirror they look at.
