Unit 10 Comparative Adjectives 

When we want to compare two things we use comparative adjectives. For example: 'Canada is colder than America.' 'Tokyo is more expensive than Barcelona.' 'Barcelona is less expensive than Tokyo.'

How to make comparative adjectives  To make comparative adjectives count the syllables in the word. Every word is made up of units of speech, usually containing vowel sounds.  For one-syllable words we add –er to the adjective to make it a comparative. The following are all one syllable adjectives: Small becomes smaller Cheap becomes cheaper Quick becomes quicker  Adjectives with two or more syllables take more / less: Beautiful becomes more beautiful Sensitive becomes more sensitive Dangerous becomes more dangerous  Note - If the adjective ends in a consonant-vowel-consonant combination (CVC), double the final consonant before adding –er: Big becomes bigger Hot becomes hotter Wet becomes wetter  For most adjectives that end with a y we change the y to i and add er: Dirty becomes dirtier Smelly becomes smellier Ugly becomes uglier  Some two-syllable adjectives can take either -er or more: Simple becomes simpler or more simple Narrow becomes narrower or more narrow Quiet becomes quieter or more quiet  Irregular forms: Some adjectives don't follow the rules. Here are some of the most common irregular forms: good becomes better bad becomes worse far becomes farther 1. Write the comparative form of each adjective. 1. ugly 2. happy 3. smart 4. friendly 5. beautiful 6. peaceful 7. strange 8. silly

9. dirty 10. wet 11. funny 12. clean 13. filthy 14. crazy 15. intelligent

READING COMPREHENSION 2 How do you read? People read in many different places, for example in a park, on a bus, or in a car. This is because books, newspapers, magazines, and so on, are easy to carry. We also read in many different ways, and at different speeds. Sometimes we read quickly. We just want to get the general idea from a newspaper article, a report, or a book in a bookshop. Perhaps we want to know what it is about, or if it is interesting or important. We call this type of reading 'skimming'. We also read quickly to get a particular piece of information, such as a date, a telephone number, or the name of a restaurant. This is called 'scanning'. We scan timetables, telephone directories, dictionaries, and web pages. At other times we need to read more carefully. For example, we read a textbook, an article, or a report to understand everything. This is called 'intensive reading' or 'study reading'. Then we read slowly and check the meaning. We use our dictionaries a lot to help us. Perhaps we take notes and try to remember things. Sometimes we need to learn things by heart, for example a poem, or a mathematical equation.
