A message from the President The word Deshantari is a combination of two Bengali words, Desh (my country) and Antari (far away). It so happens, many years ago, a group of Bengalis started out their lives in Ottawa, Canada, and contributed to the Canadian economy by working hard as all other Canadians. What is Deshantari?

Deshantari of Ottawa Carleton is a non-profit cultural and charitable organization set up by the local Bengali Community in 1972. Our mission is to promote cultural, literary, spiritual and charitable aspects of our rich heritage. Our cultural activities include innovative dramas by adult as well as children, musical performances by local talent and overseas artists that celebrate Bengali culture. We organize fund raising activities to donate local as well as international organizations.

Recent Events

When we first moved to Ottawa we felt very isolated and wanted to reconnect with our own culture. One day I found Deshantari's website and contacted them. Ever since then, we have been active members of this organisation and are so happy to be apart of such a great community that feels like a home away from home.
