Y2K Y2K AS AS AA LIFESTYLE LIFESTYLE IN IN 2O22 2O22

Written by Zeckaniah Carcallas

Y2K. Does this word ring a bell? Yes! The iconic pop culture! But aside from the Y2K we've known, "Y2K" is a term used with the millennium bug, a predicted technological collapse at the turn of the millennium in the year of 2000s, but Tumblr says otherwise. Y2K is a famous fashion trend from the mid-90s to the early 2000s during the dot-com boom, as the internet becomes more popular. Think of flashy materials, chunky shoes, pleated skirts, baguette bags, and vibrant sunglasses when picturing this style, which is often extremely modern with a touch of vintage, but Y2K isn't limited to these types of fashion clothing.

Y2K didn't just rock the fashion world. It also rocked the architecture, design, music, and film industry. The 2000s was one of the iconic eras for K-pop and

Many 2000s films and series are inspired by Y2K fashion, like the Gossip Girls, Legally Blonde, and Mean Girls, which are major hits not only in the 2000s but also in today's generation. However, time changes as well fashion, music, design, and film industry. In 2005, Y2K slowly vanished and started to give way to other fashion trends.

But as the saying goes, " Everybody loves a good comeback!" In March 2020, the pandemic started, which led to lockdowns in different countries, followed by a sudden boom in social media platforms. Tiktok is one of the most used social media platforms by Gen Z.

This pandemic became an advantage for different trends, and this is where the re-discovery of Y2K began. Gen Z K-pop and Hollywood idols, celebrities, singers, influencers, and designers like Olivia Rodrigo, Itzy, Conan Gray, Charli D'Amelio, and TXT gave fuel to this Y2K revival, and Y2K slowly made its way back to the fashion, film, and music industry. After almost two decades, Y2K is back in the game. Nevertheless, fashion trends come and go. They are constantly impacted by previous patterns, nostalgia for bygone times, the economy, social media, and so much more, fashion trends are cyclical. But ultimately, the items they choose for their wardrobe should be a reflection of their personal preferences, favorite looks, and feelings of beauty.

Y2K:

FROM ITS ORIGIN TO ITS REVIVAL The revival of the Y2K aesthetic brings back many things from the early 2000s: butterfly patterns, wide-flared pants, futuristic blobs, and metallic gradients. Y2K fashion quickly rose back to prominence, easily appealing to the millennials and Generation Z, and the elements of the era’s music slowly made a comeback too. Y2K’s resurgence shows how the aesthetics and music can withstand the test of time — but how does today’s Y2K differ from its origins? Evan Collins, the founder of the Tumblr blog Institute for Y2K Aesthetics, took the time to gather resources, images, and materials that relate to the Y2K aesthetic. He found that major precursors begin between the late 80s and early 90s, but the aesthetic itself doesn’t become definitive until sometime in 1993. He notes that some key features of the aesthetic are gradients, curves and blobs, futuristic-retro fonts, future optimism, and “surreal” CGI. Many other details were inspired by the space motifs of the 60s Space Age accompanied by technological motifs like barcodes and binary codes (think The Matrix). To put it simply, much of the old Y2K began with a combination of Space Age and speculatory future tech motifs.

Y2K further developed over time, peaking between 1997-2000 with the debut and emergence of groups like the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys who introduced a new generation of pop while employing a fresher and more “pop” take on Y2K’s style. The trend becomes more widespread until most pop artists around the world are found using similar styles and aesthetics; one example is the Swedish dance group Smile.DK and their most popular single “Butterfly” whose music video uses a colorful palette paired with “surreal” CGI.

The influence of Y2K died down after the dot-com bubble “burst” followed by events like the U.S. presidential elections, among other catalysts for Y2K’s shutdown as an aesthetic; however, the aesthetic gained traction again after over 15 years since its shutdown. With aesthetic blogs like Institute for Y2K Aesthetics and artists like Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, and Kpop group TWICE bringing back the aesthetic with fresher and more modernized looks, it is safe to assume that Y2K’s resurgence is solidified and further integrated into everyone with the help of the internet and social media. Though the future optimism for technology may have been dampened before, it is being built back up again as the new generation takes the Y2K aesthetic and makes it their own.

What is Y2K? It was about Optimism and Techno-utopianism. What makes it a lifestyle? Y2K is a lifestyle because it guided or say controlled the entertainment, fashion, and TV, basically it had control over the entirety of media with a positive influence like romanticizing the new wave of technology, embracing the future, and looking forward to it, escapism, a variety of colors, shiny clothes, Vaporwave… its Vibrance personified. Y2K as a lifestyle in 2022? The return of Y2K has managed to give us a feeling of nostalgia, and that nostalgia comes with simpler, more carefree times. Wherein we find optimism in what’s to come. 2020 and 2021 we’re riddled with gloomy depressing news, beginning with the global pandemic, to full-on wars. What makes 2022 any different? Y2K makes so much of a difference. The trend of Y2K in different social media platforms has millions of fans, and a community solely dedicated to sharing songs, images, videos, and other types of shareable media that possess “Y2K”, and in those communities, positivity is being spread, not just with the whole acceptance and pride in who you are stuff, but also in nostalgia. Looking back at the music, the movies, the fashion… it brings out the inner child so to speak. Y2K’s colors and vibrance make everything brighter, and usually, whenever we express our feelings of happiness, we use vibrant and bright colors, thus meaning Y2K brightens up everything literally and metaphorically.

Reboots and remakes are a neverending saga. And right now the craze is all about films and series from the year the 2000s or y2k. Gossip Girl, which I personally believe its creation is pivotal and life-changing for teen dramas, has gotten a reboot that aired last year and ended in December 2021. Although met with criticism, a lot of its viewers came to watch the show for its nostalgia factor. All over the place can be a phrase to use in describing it, but nothing can replace reliving a cult classic or taking another peek at a universe you thought already ended. Similar to y2k, The nostalgic effect, and emotion that comes to us while we consume media or even material things is what keeps remakes and reboots going. Though how about from a business standpoint?

There could be a borderline between being tardy and being greedy in this scenario. Nevertheless, there are also studios that are dedicated to giving a good reboot or even a sequel, like the avatar studios that created the masterpiece Avatar the legend of Aang. Although seldom, there still are dedicated and great creatives that can really push and make remakes and reboots be as good as the original. Now going back to my main point; what makes y2k relevant in the topic of reboots and remakes? Nostalgia. That is what pushes y2k to the front and the same goes for remakes. As long as people feel like they are reliving their “youth” or the times they first consume a piece of media which is arguably one of the best feelings in the world! They would be willing to re-do activities, re-watch movies, series, or films, re-invent classics, and re-live a point in their life where everything is fine, and we are not worrying about the horror that is the near future.
