Executive Summary The company E-Tech Rubick collects recyclable materials, including plastic, glass, paper, and metal. The goal of this company is to make recycling as easy as possible. When it comes to recycling, people are currently facing several issues. One of the biggest issues for recycling is that most of the recycling bins are colour coded, so it can be difficult for some individuals to determine which type of waste goes in which bin. Therefore, the company came up with the idea of offering a smart recycling bin that provides all the tools consumers need to comply with their desire to recycle. Our focus will be creating a recycling bin that is well equipped with automatic features. The smart recycling bin is equipped with a waste scanner which will scan the type of material of the waste and will automatically organise it by its respective type. Besides that, this bin is also equipped with a sensor that detects the level of waste inside it. Our product differs from other recycling bins because we have a reward system for those who recycle using our product.

1

1.0 Introduction 1.1 Background of the study The expansion of information technology and the implementation of pervasive computing technology have both taken place in a variety of applications recently, one of which is the management of waste. The management of waste often includes recycling as an integral component of the overall strategy. Recycling is one of the most essential techniques to waste management. It is the collection and processing of undesired resources in order to create new products (Tomari et al., 2017). In comparison to those of other countries, the rate of recycling in Malaysia is now quite low at only 5 percent. The goal of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government is to increase the percentage of waste that is recycled to 22 % by the year 2020 (Kadir et al., 2020). According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM), in line with the National Solid Waste Management Policy 2016 that targeted a national recycling rate of 22% in 2020, Malaysia’s recycling rate in 2019 exceeded the set target of 28.1%, an increase of 3.5 percentage points compared to 24.6% in 2018 (Kamel, 2021). Based on the statistical study, the improvement of recycling can be seen from the result but it is all because of the hard work of certain authorities. Generally, in Malaysia recycling still needs to be done more by the citizens. In order to improve the implementation of recycling in our daily lives, Smart Recycle Bin will be introduced in order to help people to manage their waste so the recycling can be done easily. In today's world, technology serves not only as a source of amusement but also as a tool for increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of many tasks. Technology has grown to be an integral component of almost everyone's daily routine. Medical, transportation and educational technologies have all been around for a long time. Smart Recycle Bin is one of the products that implement technology on it which is Internet of Things (IoT).

2

1.2 Problems Statement To begin, the first problem is the level of awareness regarding recycling is still quite low in Malaysia. This is the most important point. In essence, we already have our very own recycling system in place, and it consists of three distinct bins of different colours for collecting the various recyclable materials. It would appear that people are required to give some consideration to the matter of where the trash should be deposited before doing so. People who have a lower level of awareness regarding waste recycling may simply throw waste away without taking into consideration the colour of the bin or the type of waste being thrown away. The current condition of our recycle bin in Malaysia is another issue that can be observed. Each recycle bin is equipped with a lid, which makes it difficult for the staff to determine whether the bin is full or not. It will be easier if the staff can see the capacity of the bin without opening the lid of the bins.

3

2.0 New Product Development 2.1 Definition The process of introducing a new product to the market is known as new product development (NPD). It is possible that our business will be required to take part in this process as a result of shifting consumer preferences, intensifying competition, advances in technological capability, or the desire to seize an opportunity. The keys to the success of innovative businesses are having an understanding of what the market wants, making ingenious modifications to existing products, and developing new products that meet and exceed the expectations of customers. If the company launches new products, it will be able to tap into new markets and gain a significant advantage in the ensuing competition. But fresh concepts for innovation and technology that is more advanced are required in order to stay competitive with other businesses. The products could be completely new inventions or upgraded versions of existing products. In this case, the product created is essentially an improvement for an already existing product. Smart Recycle Bin is a waste scanner product that automatically sorts waste into the appropriate categories after scanning the material it is made of. This bin also has a sensor that measures the amount of waste inside it. Basically, our Smart Recycle Bin is designed to make it simple for users to dispose of trash by simply placing it in our bin. The user does not have to guess which one the waste refers to. This Smart Recycle Bin will automatically sort the trash into the appropriate category.

4

2.2 Classification of New Product Development The development of completely new products and improvements to already existing ones are the two types of new products that can be categorised under the umbrella term "New Product Development.". For the first category, there are two subcategories which are products that are new to the world and products that are new to the company. New to the world product is the first of its kind and it is a new invention that will create a new market from the product that has been developed. While new to the firm, it focuses more on new product lines where it is new to the company but not new to the marketplace. Apart from that, Improvements on Existing Products consist of four categories which are Addition to existing lines, Improvement and

revisions to

existing products, Cost

reductions and

Repositioning. Our product, the Smart Recycle Bin, falls into the category of being an Improvement on existing products. This is due to the fact that improvements and revisions have been made based on the existing recycle bin and how effective it is in terms of use from both the consumer and the authorities in charge of waste management. One of the improvements that has been made to the existing recycle bin is an automatic lid, which has the ability to detect human motion near the lid and cause it to open automatically. In addition, the recycling bin will have a screen display and sensors. The screen will be used to display relevant information, and the sensors will be utilised to detect the human motions, detect the waste material and detect the bins capacity level. Lastly, our product includes a reward box which is a soap dispenser to attract interest for others to use this Smart Recycle Bin.

5

2.3 New Product Development Process 2.3.1 Research and Development R&D is an abbreviation that stands for "research and development," which describes organised efforts aimed at the discovery of new information, products, or processes. Typically, innovation is a part of the research and development process for new products. A Smart Recycle Bin has been proposed in order to make recycling more efficient and convenient. ●

Idea generation

This product was conceptualised as a result of the issues that have been identified and the ideas that have been gleaned from current technology. The Internet of Things (IoT), which implements a variety of components that are used to make a smart home or smart city, is one of the ideas that has been proposed. Other ideas include a garbage can with an automatic lid because many malls already use garbage cans with automatic lids to help maintain hygienic conditions. Besides, many in the industries have used many kinds of sensors in their business such as motion sensors used to open and close a lamp or fan, ultrasonic sensors to check the distance from one object and many more. ●

Idea Screening

From the idea that we get from what has been explained above, all the ideas have been reviewed and discussed on what kind of innovative product we can make from the problems identified and the ideas collected. After several discussion phases, we decided to implement all the related ideas to create a new innovative product which is Smart Recycle Bin. Smart Recycle Bin has been sketched and the prototype has been developed in order to give a better view of the product. Apart from that, the features and function also has been explained in the section below.

Market Survey

For the market survey, general people have been chosen as recycling is not a process where a certain people only can do it. It is a process where all ages can do. Market survey is survey and analysis done for a service or product, which involves consumer necessities and prospects. Currently, the concept of our Smart Recycle Bin is not being projected in our country, so this might be the very first in Malaysia which also comes with a reward box for the consumers. We also conducted a survey and found out that the majority of them agreed that having an advanced technology for recycling bins will encourage them to recycle more.

2.3.2 Product Design/ Features & Technology Description Detailed information on all Smart Recycle Bin features is included in this section. This recycle bin was designed with the purpose of making the recycling process effortless and encouraging them to recycle with the reward system. The following table provides a detailed description of the product.

Product

Features & Explanation

1. Automatic Lid

1. Automatic Lid Automatic lids are used for this bin. When a motion sensor detects objects or people, it will open the lid automatically. This eliminates the need for the customer to manually open the lid in order to dispose of waste in the bin, which keeps it hygienic.

7

2. Screen

2. Screen On the screen, it will be used to display

related

information.

Users will see information about each bin, such as its capacity, full indicator, type of waste, and how much soap they will receive as a reward.

3. Soap Dispenser (Reward Box)

3. Soap Dispenser (Reward Box) Smart Recycle Bin will have soap dispensers attached to them. Soap

will

be

dispensed

in

accordance with the amount of reward.

4. Sensors

4. Sensors In the Smart Recycle Bin, the first sensor is the human motion sensor where it can detect human motion in order to open the lid automatically. There will be a sensor with a

8

camera and this sensor will make waste to be detected according to its type and weight. The waste will then be moved according to its type once the waste has been identified. Based on the picture on the left in each bin, there is another sensor, it is an ultrasonic sensor It checks whether the bin is already full.

2.3.3 Concept Testing Concept testing is distinct from test markets in that it involves gauging consumer acceptability of a new product idea through occasionally qualitative research techniques before the product is released onto the market. Without the embellishments and assistance from the commercial, this testing focuses on the core concept of the product. The concept testing is being performed to see if the Smart Recycle Bin features will be able to assist individuals in separating their garbage into the appropriate recycling bins, making recycling as simple as possible and discover the respondent's initial perception. Verbal description is the primary communicating method by which we introduce our suggested product, the Smart Recycle Bin to the intended audience. Our product has four primary features which are an automatic lid, screen, soap dispenser and sensor. As instances of verbal descriptions that we provide to the customer, this product implements Internet of Things (IoT) where this system is built on an Arduino Nano board and an ultrasonic sensor to monitor the fullness level of the container besides including other sensors for detecting type of waste and human motion. Furthermore, people can 9

receive the soap for free depending on how much of their garbage is recycled. The purpose of the soap dispenser is to serve as an incentive to encourage the use of this smart recycle bin as frequently as possible and to stop the extraction of natural resources from wildlife's natural habitats. We provide a thorough explanation of every feature that is offered on our suggested product so that the client is aware of it. Thus, all of this knowledge about the features provided will also enable our customer to respond more effectively. We use a rendering technique as an additional means of communicating our concept and idea for the suggested product. The process of creating a photorealistic or non-photorealistic image from a digital 3D model using a computer programme is known as rendering. The render is the name given to the final image. A scene file containing objects can define many models in a precisely specified language or data structure. Rendering will provide us a digital three-dimensional representation of our product that will enable us to show how the product will appear in actual use. As we can state, this will also assist our customers in better visualising what our Smart Recycle Bin will be like in actual life which allows them to respond and provide feedback more effectively.

2.3.5 Test Marketing The test marketing was done by distributing questionnaires to the public about Smart Recycle Bin. The questionnaire consists of questions regarding the product and how well the respondents will utilise it once it is implemented. The product design and functionality is explained before conducting the survey for more understanding about Smart Recycle Bin.

Figure 2.11 Data gathered from the survey

Figure 2.12 Design of Smart Recycle Bin

15

Based on the data that the survey obtained, 30 out of 36 respondents stated that the product design is suitable for a recycle bin. Meanwhile, a minority of the respondents stated that the product design is not suitable for a recycle bin.

Figure 2.13 Data gathered from the survey Based on the chart above, 83.3% of the respondents suggest that the Smart Recycle Bin should be implemented in the Public Places. Furthermore, the least selected option to implement this product with only 50% of the respondents is by implementing in Each House.

Figure 2.14 Data gathered from the survey According to the respondents, with this implementation of Smart Recycle Bin, it may encourage other people to recycle more often. 88.9% of the respondents agreed that with an advanced technology, it would be easier for them to recycle more compared to the conventional recycle bin. 16

To summarise, the majority of the responses that were collected are positive towards this innovative invention. This is because, based on the survey that was conducted, most of the respondents stated that they will be more likely to recycle if there are more user-friendly recycle bins. Therefore, with this Smart Recycle Bin, it is more efficient to improve the number of recycled materials that can be reproduced and reused to reduce waste that can be harmful for the environment.

17

3.0 Conclusion Based on the findings and discussion, the problem that occurs is the level of awareness regarding recycling is still quite low in Malaysia. Besides, each recycle bin is equipped with a lid, which makes it difficult for the staff to determine whether the bin is full or not. However, the level of awareness regarding recycling is still quite low in Malaysia and is the most critical problem. This is because recycling activity must be actively being practised in our country to achieve the strategy. The strategies that are involved are lowering water and air pollution so that it can cut down on the amount of air pollution due to the use of chemicals used in the manufacturing process. In conclusion, this study has shown that our Smart Recycle Bin with automatic lid will ease consumers to not open the lid manually so that it can keep hygienic. This is because when there are objects or people, the motion sensor will erect and open the lid automatically. Besides, this proposed product is also supported by the survey that is being conducted. Smart Recycle Bin is the product that will get the consumer’s point of view and want, decisively plan and resources. Based on the already existing product which is recycle bin, it is shown that the bin has the same function but our product is more innovative, user friendly and more hygienic. Thus, it is an effective and efficient solution to solve this problem as to increase the level of awareness on Malaysia’s citizens to practise recycling in their daily life.
