ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Thanks once again to Mark Gleeson for his huge efforts in getting Africa up to standard. Huge thanks also to Tom Chittick without whom you would not be reading this and to Oliver Greenleaves for his invaluable contribution inputting the stats. Thanks to Cris Freddi for casting his eye over the content to check that it made sense; to Neil McKnight, Daniel Fein, Tom Lewis, Michael Oliver and Roger Lakin for their help. My thanks also to Lorraine Jerram, David Wilson and Rhea Halford at Headline. Information from the Almanack comes from official sources on the internet, but much also comes from the brilliant RSSSF and its network of contributors - thanks to you all. AUTHOR’S NOTE As the Almanack sets off on its own without FIFA, I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone there who helped to get the book established. To Lars Bretscher, Helen de Haan, Andreas Herren, Marius Schneider and Jérôme Champagne thanks for your help in the past and for your continued support. The major innovation in the Almanack this year has been the inclusion of the medals tables and the maps that compliment these tables. In future we would like to include more nations but the historical information is not complete enough yet. If you feel you can help, contact me on

We palyed very well today for an amateur club. All my players did their jobs very well, especially in the first half. We were down to ten men with an injury when they took the lead. You’re obviously vulnerable when you’ve only got ten players on the field, although that’s not to take anything away from Flavio. Alan Jones

We were very nervous in the first half. It was basically as if we were playing against ourselves and not Auckland. In the second half, the goal gave us back our belief, we retained possession much better and looked more solid. At the end of the day, that was the decisive factor in winning. Manuel Jose

My players gave it their best shot, but we were unable to make anything of the few chances that came our way. You need plenty of experience to become a good player, but at the moment we have a lot of young players who are short on big-tournament experience. Choi Kang Hee
It was a very difficult match as the Koreans were very well organised. They were agile and quick. We didn’t make much of the space offered to us in the first half, but as the game went on we had more of the possession and we finally translated our chances into a goal. Luis Fernando Tena

We weren’t on top form and half of my players fell below their normal standard, Yet again, what we have seen here is that every team always always has a chance of winning. My team needed quite a while to find their rhythm. I’m happy America weren’t able to expolit this weakness. I only stopped worrying after we went 3-0 up. Taking part in this competition has taught the players a great deal. We already know what it takes to win in Asia, but here I felt we came up short in various respects. Our play is way too erratic and we’ve got to do something about these highs and lows. We need a stronger bench too. Choi Kang Hee

We had a poor first half. In the second we had more possession and started to create more scoring chances. After we scored the equaliser, we really went for it. We took risks going forward and that left spaces in midfield and at the back which our opponents exploited. Aboutrika really stood out for Ahly. Luis Fernando Tena

I have to congratulate Inter, who played as a team and put in a great performance. I feel that they were the better side. At no time were we in control of the game. Japan has had a chequered history in the AFC Asian Cup. They didn’t enter or failed to qualify for the first eight tournaments before making their first appearance at the finals in 1988. Four years later they were champions and so completely have they dominated the competition since then, that their failure to win a fourth title in 2007 was seen as a major disappointment. Having taken over from Zico after the World Cup finals in Germany, new coach Ivica Osim was straight in at the deep end as the Japanese first had to secure qualification for the finals - which they did with relative ease - and then prepare for the defence of the title that they won in China three years previously. Based in Hanoi for the tournament, Japan had a tricky tie against hosts Vietnam to secure a place in the quarter-finals, but showing the form of true champions they won 4-1 to set up a dream tie against Australia. The win over Vietnam proved to be their last of the tournament, although they did knock-out the Australians on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Japan’s semi-final against Saudi Arabia was a classic, pitting against each other the two teams that had won all of the previous six tournaments. In a see-saw match it was the Saudis who emerged as 3-2 winners to end Japanese dreams of a INTERNATIONAL HONOURS Qualified for the FIFA World Cup™ 1998 2002 2006 Qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 1991 1995 1999 2003 Asian Cup 1992 2000 2004 AFC U-16 Championship 1994 AFC Champions League Furukawa 1987, Jubilo Iwata 1999
hat-trick of titles. In domestic football, winning the J.League had become something of an obsession for Urawa Reds, one of the best supported clubs in the world. Over three quarters of a million fans attended their home games in the 2006 season - an average of 45,573 - and they finally saw their dreams come true. The League went down to the final afternoon with Urawa at home to second placed Gamba Osaka, the defending champions. Gamba needed to win by three clear goals but that was never on the cards with Urawa’s 3-2 victory clinching the long awaited title. Victory was certainly sweet for their German coach Guido Buchwald who had seen his Urawa side finish second in the previous two seasons and who was stepping down at the end of the year to return home. Before he went, however, he steered Urawa Reds to the Emperor’s Cup Final where Gamba once again stood between them and silverware. Although Urawa were outplayed by Gamba for the whole game, Yuichiro Nagai scored a very late winner to clinch the double for Urawa - the first since 2000 and only the second since the J.League started in 1993. The other trophy on offer during the season - the J.League Cup - was won by JEF United Chiba. March 24, 2007 may well go down as a significant landmark in the development of football in Kazakhstan. The 2-1 victory over Serbia was the national team’s first competitive victory since joining UEFA and concrete evidence of the improvements made since the move. That the victory came against one of the traditional powers of the European game - albeit in a reduced state from the old Yugoslavia - was even more satisfying for Arno Pijpers’ team. The result was not a one-off either as the UEFA Euro 2008 qualifiers also saw Kazakhstan draw away in Belgium whilst Azerbaijan were held home and away. Kazakhstan also scored in nine consecutive matches INTERNATIONAL HONOURS None
between December 2006 and June 2007 - a new national team record. There were encouraging signs too at club level with Kairat managing to beat Hungary’s Fehérvár in the UEFA Cup, although they were knocked out on away goals. FK Astana (previously Zhenis), also managed by Pijpers, won the 2006 championship thanks largely to an excellent youth programme that is also beginning to reap dividends for the national team. They just missed out on the double, however, losing to FK Almaty - a team created only in 2003 - in the Cup Final. Almaty’s 3-1 victory, thanks to a Jafar Irismetov hat trick, meant a first trophy for the club from the capital. THE FIFA BIG COUNT OF 2006 Number of players Professionals

CONMEBOL CONFEDERACION SUDAMERICANA DE FUTBOL In the 1980s the Copa América was in very real danger of disappearing from the calendar. In an effort to revive its fortunes, the South American football confederation decided that, from 1987, the tournament would do a tour of the continent with all ten members of the South American confederation taking a turn to host the competition. It was a decision that saved the Copa América, and in 2007 Venezuela brought that cycle to an end as hosts for the first time in their history. The tournament was a resounding success with capacity crowds enjoying some of the most entertaining football in the history of the Copa América. Argentina, in particular, were a joy to watch, scoring 16 goals in their first five games as they set out to win the title for the first time since 1993. In the final they faced a Brazil team under new coach Carlos Dunga, and without Kaká and Ronaldinho, but that made little difference as the Brazilians ran out comfortable 3-0 winners, countering Argentina’s flair with the kind of pragmatic football that won Brazil the World Cup in 1994 when THE FIFA BIG COUNT OF 2006 FOR SOUTH AMERICA Number of players

Dunga was captain. For Argentina, defeat left a famous generation of players, including Veron, Crespo, Ayala and Zanetti, without a single international trophy to show for their efforts. There was better news for Argentina in the Copa Libertadores when Boca Juniors beat Grêmio in the final to move to within one win of Independiente’s record haul of seven titles. Boca have now established themselves as the top club on the continent with four victories in eight editions of the Copa Libertadores since the start of the decade, the most sustained period of success that any club has managed to achieve since the early 1970s. South America’s other major club tournament was won by Pachuca who beat Chile’s Colo Colo in the final of the Copa Sudamericana - the first time a Mexican club has won a South American club title since they were first invited to compete in 1998. On the world stage there was success for Argentina in the FIFA U–20 World Cup and for Internacional in the FIFA Club World Cup, where they beat European champions Barcelona 1-0 in the final. Following the demise of the British International Championship, the Copa América is now the longest-running international competition in the world, dating back to 1916 though some historians like to point to a tournament played in 1910 that was referred to at the time as the “South American Championship”. Argentina and Uruguay have always been the most enthusiastic proponents of the Copa América and each has been champions 14 times lending credence to the belief among many

South Americans that the real home of football on the continent lies around the River Plate estuary and the cities of Montevideo and Buenos Aires and not further north in Brazil. In the first 33 editions spanning 73 years the Brazilians won the title just three times and never outside of Rio de Janeiro. Aside from these three, Peru in 1939 and 1975, and Paraguay in 1953 and 1979, have been champions twice while Bolivia in 1963 and Colombia in 2001 have both won the title once. Only Venezuela, Ecuador and Chile have failed to win it. Historically the tournament has usually been played on a league system although since the 1970s a group stage followed by knock-out rounds has been the preferred format. Another innovation has been the invitation extended to Mexico to take part since 1993, along with another guest, most commonly Costa Rica or the USA. Now held every two years the Copa América has finally caught the imagination of the Brazilians and in recent years they have been the most successful nation winning three of the past four editions and their 1997 triumph in Bolivia was their first away from home. The past three FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns in South America, in which each of the ten nations plays each other home and away, has to a certain extent cast a shadow over the Copa América. It is difficult to argue against the fact that the top team, at the end of what amounts to a three-year campaign, should be regarded as the best team on the continent rather than the Copa America champions. However, the Copa América remains an important landmark in the fixture list and it rarely fails to entertain. SOUTH AMERICAN WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP Year 1991 1995 1998 2003 2006

The South American Women’s Championship was introduced in 1991 as a qualifying tournament for the FIFA Women’s World Cup and has been played as such ever since. Brazil have dominated since the start, a pattern that has continued in the under 20 competition which was introduced in 2004 to tie in with the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. There are currently two club tournaments held in South America with the Copa Libertadores held in the first half of the year and the Copa Sudamericana towards the end. The Copa Libertadores is the senior of the two and has been held annually since 1960. The Copa Sudamericana is the latest in a long line of secondary tournaments following on from the Supercopa João Havelange, the Copa Mercosur and the Copa Merconorte. In the 1990s there was even a third tournament, the Copa CONMEBOL, but that lasted just eight years.

My players demonstrated that they’re capable of great things. Argentina were the favourites of the press and everyone but the game is decided over 90 minutes. We came to the rescue of the Brazilian worker, who wakes up in the morning and returns home late at night, whose only satisfaction is seeing Brazil win a football match. Carlos Dunga

We knew we had to be awake today, but instead we were caught falling asleep. It makes you angry being unable to win and close out an exceptional tournament. Carlos Tevez We are totally ruined. A loss like this you feel deep in your soul. Esteban Cambiasso
