Historical Review. TECHNICAL CONSTRUCTIONS, C.A. (CONTECA by its Spanish initials), is a Venezuelan Company specializing in construction for the oil and petrochemical industries, and it was legally formed on February 23rd 1965.

CONTECA started with small civil Works execution such as family residences; but as time passed by, the scope of its Works expanded towards building constructions, with the Municipal council of Carirubana amongst the most notable ones.

On 1977, the oil and petrochemical industries operations started, allowing the company’s field of action to grow non-stop until it became the organization it is today, offering its services in the areas of civil and mechanical Works, as well as electrical, instrumentation and plants maintenance (turn Around).

In the recent years, CONTECA has successfully executed major projects, as well as plants modifications (Revamp), where it counts with a great amount of experience.

SPECIALIZATION 1. METAL-MECHANICS AREA: Manufacture and assembly of metallic structures: Basic and common activities in refineries and petrochemical facilities, such as structural element’s surface preparation, starting with sandblasting cleaning, as well as cutting and manufacture of light, medium or heavy metallic pieces, but also its assembly in existing or new equipment. We also specialize in the pipelines mounting and supports, like dummy, fix point, pipe-rack column extensions, hanging mounts, trunnion, shells, etc.

Pipeline Manufacture and assembly: It implies piece cutting labors of all existing diameters and schedules for its use in either systems process or services, where all kinds of materials exist, from carbon steel, to any alloy form established by the norms, codes, or type of pipeline. Spools in fields or workshops, assembly in service areas or new project’s zones, final connection through arc welding, tests according to wellknown standards and regulations such as hydrostatic tests, penetrating ink, xray, hardness tests, heat treatment pre and post welding, internal covering according to the purpose of use, external covering for either keeping the optimal temperature or personal protection.

Equipment Assembly: Transport from equipment warehouse, considering amongst them, horizontal and vertical recipients, of static or dynamic nature, such as, columns, towers, drums, heat exchangers, coolers, pumps, filters, furnaces; as well as modification and internal renewal of this equipment, for condensation, evaporation, or decantation. Plates removal for modification or substitution, internal wash with pressurized water or sandblasting depending on the required use, thickness measurement of internal covering with the possibility of executing minor repairs, section changes or entire rings made of especial materials such as carbon steel or Monel. Tension relief on new or repaired welding, with the purpose of guarantying the quality of the cord, thermal isolation works are also made when required by specifications, with materials such as mineral wool of different thicknesses, or calcium silicate, all according to norms or technical specifications of the project or work. Finally, the raising maneuver is executed, along with the final emplacement in its foundations either metallic or concrete made, where anchor bolts are previously set up, proceeding then to its correspondent grout leveling that allows the necessary horizontality or verticality for the equipment to operate normally.

Equipment repair: Another of CONTECA’s gained experiences, is formed by continuous work in equipment repairs, where the damage is produced by internal or external wear due to the exposure to stress or regular operational conditions; this is why it is common and usual to perform operations or repairs in cylindrical or circular bodies through the use of welding filling in holes or cracks for returning the equipment to an operational state, however a major repair can be required in sections made of carbon steel or any other special material, where the technique requires a deeper understanding, which is how internal tower, heat exchangers and drums repairs have been made, removing complete sections of its internal composition in a process known as lining, and replacing them with the application of especial electrodes and with generally extraordinary labors. Modifications in vertical equipment, such as columns or towers, has also been widely made, in which its service components, whether plates, trays, fasteners, bubbling glasses or glitch-grid, etc., are replaced by new ones, with the purpose of improving or normalize the equipment functioning.

Surface preparation: In all metal-mechanics work processes, techniques that allows preserving the surfaces of certain equipment are use; such as pipelines and structures subjected to wear by normal functioning conditions, requiring then a previous preparation whether this is obtained by the use of hand tools, or mechanical effects like sandblasting, in both cases an optimum profile and anchoring zone is

INFRASTRUCTURE BUILDING:

Earth moving: Ordinary Works of manual or mechanical excavations in rock, soft, semi-hard or hard consistency floors for profound or directs foundations, allowing the stability of the basis for equipment and structures. Excavations in trenches or shallow trenches with the purpose of ENTIBADO for the pipe laying of PVC tubes in benches where there will also be installed electrical or instrumentation wires for equipment feeding whether in open or free areas, or in operation areas. Excavations in trenches for service, sewer or equipment cooling, pipe laying are also performed, as well as pipelines for oil or gas.

Structural concrete: Site preparation, metallic reinforcement emplacement, formwork, structural concrete pouring in footings, bracing beams, pedestals, columns and slabs of different dimension and configurations, used for support elements subjected to dynamic effects such as reciprocating compressors or pumps, as well as static nature effects such as heat exchangers, filters or any other equipment that requires a proper fixing and isolation by its nature.

Fire protection: Covering with cementitious and granular mixing material or previously treated resins based materials for protecting structures and equipment, applied with manual instruments which procedure it’s called direct pouring or with electromechanical and injection equipment for producing an impact effect called gunite projection; in both cases, the action has the purpose of thermally isolate elements subjected to highly risked exposure in case of fire in a specific area.

Ø  42” DIAMETER PIPE LAYING:

For potable water transport, part of the adduction system called “El Falconiano”, a 65km pipe laying was made, with diameters varying from 42” to 48”, on their sleeping brackets, through a variable topography, given the fact that this pipeline starts in the “Barrancas” dam, scrolling through a mountainous zone, where the slopes goes from 10º to 45º, which obstructed the labors of transport, raising, laying and placement of the pipeline, making necessary the use of higher capacity equipment, then we went through a semi-plane topography zone, where the pipe laying was easier, accelerating the placement with the joint side-boom on the previously installed supports. In this stretch, is located a zone where a riverbed with a 45-meter-wide canal had to be saved, placing a metallic structure for it to act as support for the pipeline. Finally, there are some stretches that goes below and above ground, requiring the use of backhoes, frontal loaders and crawler excavator for it was used in a dune area.
