BiographicalSynopsisof interviewee:ex UTEP Student,born in the United States. Residentof Ciudad Juarez.

M: Tell me what you rememberwhen you were a kid. Where did you live? Where you born in Juarez H: No,I was born in SelmaCA. I was madein the U.S by wetbacks,becausemy dad went over there.When he lived over therehe lastedsix yearsliving and working in the railroads, in the S. P. SouthernPacific, he was a trackman,thosewho fix the railroad tracks.And it was when I was born over there. When my 'Jefita" left for over there, my older brother had alreadybeenborn, He was born in Camargo.And then the other, the middle one; he had beenborn in Juarez.Then I was born in California in 1953. In 54 the baby, " la gordita" was born. My dad sayswe lived in Selmafor three years,when I was little. In that time my grandmothertold that the people where getting their immigration papersin order, that it was really and easy.They would adviseus to fix our immigration statusand this and that. Becauseatthat time my dad was using papersof someone namedTito Rebeles.Thus,we were called Rebeles.My name was Arthur. When I was born my jefrta went to the hospital and told them Arturo. The mrse looked at Arturo and said, "Arthur."

And they wrote down like that with out saying anything. Arthur Rebeleswas my name. Until 1966,when we left Juarez,Iworked in a field in California.I did not know my homeland.They told my jefita thatit would cost a bundleto changemy name.And here the "coyotes" in Juarezjust wanteda lot of moneyjust to write the lettersto Sacramento, just to have your namechanged.They speciallywanteda lot of money from my jefita becausethey saw that they could take advantage.We left for California and it did not cost us one cent.We just left to quickly, we went priestof the churchand he help us out. He helps us out with a baptismal certificate and this and that. I had my papers,but as Arthur Rebeles,the birth certificate, but that was not my real name. Later,like in a week the papershad arrived, an affidavit changingmy name from Arthur Rebelesto Arturo Hernandez. At that time my jefita was really influencedby her mom. And sheconvincedher

to comebackto Juarezandfix herpapersof immigration.Well sheandmy dadcame,but theyneverfixedtheirpapers. M: She came to Juarezto f,rxher immigration status/ H: She came to Juarczto fix her papers,and they lost thehouseandall the furniturethat they had in California. My dad left work. H: All of you cameto Juarezl M: Yes. we all cameto Juarcz. H: and you left everything in California? M: Yes, we left them with an aunt.Later shetoo cameto El Pasoand sold everything over there. She sold everything cheapin a rummage sale,and my dad never fixed his paper becausethey put barriers at immigration, and this and that. They said he would

have to ask for a pardon becausehe had worked illegally in the United States,and for using anothername. My father had a mountain of immigration papers,but he never fix them. M: They did not let him? H: they let him get at immigration. Well, to continue my life as a kid, I only remember until I was about four when my parent left is in Camargo.They left me and my brothers in Camargo,becausemy fatherwent to working the U.S. Illegally, causehe did not fix his papers.So he immigratedillegally to U.S. again.At that time my mother left to California, with my dad. I was only about 3 yearsold. I was raisedthere until I was five with my grandmother.Then my father would travel back and forth. He was was like an American citizen. He had even learnedto SpeakEnglish. At that time, the Border Patrol wasn't as tough. Thus,that is where I beganmy first year of kinder garden,in Camargo. Then my dad cameand decidedto live inJuarez,so he went andpicked us up in Camargo.I startedgoing to schoolagain.To the 30 Veracruz,to kinder again.Becausein Camargoschoolstartedlike here,in pre-school.Then I left it. Becausetherewere private schools. Supposedly,we had money. M: yes? H: Well my fatherworked in the United States. M: So you had money. H: We had money. And my grandmotherwas one of the families that had somemoney at that time. So we came to Juarez.I went to the Veracruz 30 and went fro one year to the Agricultura. I just went until the fifth grade,that was in 66 or 67. An uncle came from Michigan in a brand new truck. My dad had not seenhis brother fro some twenty years.

So he convincedhis brotherto lend him the truck so that we would all go to the United Statesas with tourist permits.He just took out tourist visasfor himsell my mom andmy two brothers.My sister and I were Americans.Then we went with a compadreof my father.His namewas JosePosada.He was running a ranchin Selma.We lived there for six years,in that small town. He gaveus a job there.We picked peches,grapesand plums. Well, we madea lot of money. M: During the summer? H: During the summer and during school time. I went to the sixth grade there. I was in the sixth grade at Indianola ElementarySchool.There were all Japaneseand gabachosin that school.There one or two Mexican,but they did not know how to speakSpanish.I saw the school when there were no kids there. ( during the summer)Y liked it and said. "Wow, this fucken schoolis bad ass!" But man, when the kids arrived,thosewere the most miserablesix months of my life. We had suffered hunger, and we had suffered in many ways, but we had neversufferedpsychologically.I felt unwanted.And I just now barely understandwhat those fuckers told me. M: What did they tell you? H: First of all: -- Go back to where ]zoucame from. Go back to where you came from.. wetback. dirty Mexican. Even the Mexican kids told me that. The thing was that I did not know any English, so the only thing I could so was to beat them up. I think that if you go back and looked at my pennanentrecord, if they still have it, you would seethat I would spend90o/oof the time in the principals office. I think that once I set foot on the school, barely getting of

the bus, when there was a report coming from the bus driver, becauseI had already beat up three gabachos.Every day I went home all bruised and beatenup. Well, in Juarez, they show you to fight in the streets,throwing stonesand all of that. When I arrived here, no one was going to be pushing me aroundfor any reason.I did not understandwhat they told me, but there was one that would tell me more or lesswhat they were saying. Sometimesjust by their expressionson their facesI would dislike them. Schoolwas somethingthat was really did not interestme. The only thing was that I was getting all A's in math,becauseevenmy teacherdid not understandhow I did long division. Becausein Mexico they show us shortcuts,and herethey teachlong divisions.So I impressedeventhe teacher. In Mexico you do half of the divisionsin your head,and here you have to write everything down., so the teacherwanted me to do it the way he wanted,but I couldn't do it that way. It was a wasteof time. At first I got all A's, but later he would just fail me becauseI would get "no answer"on my papers.The teacher wanted me to write down all the steps.He was crazy, those six months there were a failure. After they called me wetback and all of that, they woul take us to the office and would give us swatswith a big stick. But I was alreadycallused,inJuarezthey would hit us with rulers in the palms of our hands.So I would careless.What really got me sadwas that a gabachowould show up with a couple of friends and wanted to beat me up, but I was frerce,we would start fighting and make one of them bleed, then they would take us to the office. There,I was the only one that would end up losing becauseno one spoke Spanish.The gabachowould just explain -- attackedme.

And I would just be there in anotherworld. The only thing I could do was to laugh with the principal. He must have thought that I was sometype of idiot. I think that's where the stereotypesof the Chicano come from. We would go the office , Ilhat did )tou do? And all I could was to laugh, I did not know anything. I only knew how to say hi and bye. The first thing I learnedwas: somebodycame.Becausein the ranch the dog barked when they hearda car and they would say,somebodycame. Well I lastedthereexactly for four months in that school. And when I got my report card, all it said was; He is showing progressiveattitudes. (laughter).They could deal with me. M: They did not gaveyou grades? H: No, they did not gave me gradesor anything. I did not understandanything. I was a disasterthere. M: and you just lastedfour monthsthere? H: Four monthsI lastedthere.Then,we just couldn't take it anymore.I cried there.I cried therelike the machoscry. I evenstartedtalking to dogs.That's how bad things were. Then we found a ride back to El Paso.
