City-wide campaign encourages to CAN: Care. Adopt. Neuter.

By Rudy Arispe When Jenny Pope learned through a City of San Antonio Animal Care Services e-mail alert in February that a litter of 17 puppies was scheduled to be euthanized within 72 hours, she jumped to their rescue. Pope adopted five of the pups, and would have taken more, if not for the two dogs she already owned. To accommodate the additional members to the canine clan, the 40-year-old animal advocate converted the dining room of her Helotes home into a makeshift kennel by replacing the carpet with tile and installing gates around the entrances. Watching the rambunctious puppies play in her backyard, Pope is glad she was able to step in – just in time. “They’re personalities are really coming out now,” she says. “They’re happy and healthy. But the sad thing is there are a lot of other dogs that don’t get to live. I don’t like seeing animals killed. I’m against it unless they are sick or there is something wrong with them.”

“The more that people are aware that they can adopt or foster unwanted animals, then more animals can be rescued.” Pope’s sentiment is shared by the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS), Alamo Area Partners for Animal Welfare (AAPAW) and the San Antonio Area Foundation Consortium of Partners, who, in August 2010, launched a citywide, bilingual campaign, “Talk About It!,” (¡Vamos a Hablarlo!) to encourage residents to become responsible pet owners, spay and neuter their pets, and consider adopting or fostering dogs and cats in an effort to make San Antonio a No Kill community. “Talk About It!” was created to promote No Kill and is the latest effort that began several years ago after the clamoring of residents who were upset to read in a 2004 San Antonio Express-News article that the Alamo City euthanized more pets per capita than any other major U.S. city, mainly because of a lack of shelter space. The San Antonio Area Foundation (SAAFdn) had already been granting funds to animal welfare organizations for years; but in

The community had developed a No Kill Strategic Plan about a year earlier, and the foundation committed to staff that plan through 2012. The Talk About It! campaign officially launched last summer. Since kicking off seven months ago, “Talk About It!” has made great gains in reaching its No Kill goal, according to the campaign’s funding arm, SAAFdn. Among them: more than 468 free spay/ neuter surgeries have been provided; 3,000 homes reached through volunteer block walks; 1,000 signed petitions; and 35,177 homes informed about spay/neuter events. In addition, more than 3,800 dogs and cats were adopted, rescued or returned to their owners from ACS, and 21,000 dogs and cats were sterilized at low-cost spay/neuter clinics during that same time frame. Gavin Nichols, SAAFdn Community Initiatives program officer, says although the campaign is having an impact, much more work lies ahead. “The campaign needs to keep reaching more people,” Nichols says. “During October through January, adoptions and live releases were up. That’s good, but it doesn’t get us to a No Kill level. We need to have every healthy, treatable animal released live. That’s about 70 percent of all animals entering our shelters.” He asks residents to adopt animals from Animal Defense League, Humane Society, ACS and other rescue groups, especially when considering to purchase a puppy or

Toyota to host 5k Run/ Walk to benefit Japan By Cristina Blackwell [email protected] The Tohoku earthquake and tsunami resulted in more than 8,000 deaths, 2,000 injured and more than 12,000 people missing, according to the Japanese National Police Agency. Estimates of the earthquake’s magnitude make it the most powerful known earthquake to hit Japan, and one of the most powerful earthquakes in the world since the modern recordkeeping began in 1900. “In the 65 years after the end of World War II, this is the toughest and most difficult crisis for Japan,” said Japanese Prime Minister, Naoto Kan. To benefit disaster relief efforts in Japan and the Pacific, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (TMMTX) is partnering with the San Antonio Chapter of the American Red Cross to

host a 5K Run/Walk. This non-timed event will be held Saturday, March 26 from 9 a.m. with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the TMMTX plant site located at 1 Lone Star Pass. Participants also have the option of preregistering at register.iaapweb. com. Free and open to the public of all ages, donations will be accepted on-site. Those unable to attend who wish to donate can visit AmericanRedCross.org/ ToyotaLexusDealers-emp. All proceeds will go to the American Red Cross relief efforts. “This is an opportunity for us to do something on a local level,” said Craig Mullenbach, manager for external affairs at TMMTX. In response to the disastrous earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Toyota has responded in the United States by matching team donations to the Ameri-

can Red Cross. “So far we’re up to $70,000 and we hope to get that number even higher,” added Mullenbach. Additionally, Mullenbach said Toyota’s Japan office has donated $3.5 million for relief and recovery efforts in communities affected by the disaster. “We are grateful for the American public’s generosity and compassion following what has been declared one of the most devastating earthquakes in history,” said Michael Bennett, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross, San Antonio Area Chapter. “As always, the San Antonio community is stepping up with generous support for those affected by this devastating event.” For additional information a recorded message is provided at (210) 263-4143 or follows on Twitter at @tmmtx1.

Reembolsos por arbolitos se prorrogan hasta el 30 de abril Especial para La Prensa Los clientes que deseen embellecer y dar sombra a sus hogares o negocios pueden aprovechar el programa de Reembolsos Sombra Verde, que CPS Energy ha prorrogado hasta el 30 de abril. Clientes pueden recibir hasta tres reembolsos de $50 cada uno, por la siembra de arbolitos en sus propiedades residenciales o comerciales. Desde el comienzo del programa el 1 de octubre de 2010, se han otorgado más de 1,400 rembolsos valorados en cerca de $72,000 acreditados a las cuentas de luz y gas de los clientes. Spring Jazz at the Falls presents Jessy J

Free jazz concert at The Shops at La Cantera with amazing music from Latina saxophonist Jessy J from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on March 26 – Bring a lawn chair. By Angela Covo [email protected] Jessy J, just 31, has been playing the sax for more than 20 years. Always musical, she started playing the saxophone in band in middle school. While everyone else was out playing, J would practice. “I practiced all the time, I loved it,” she said. At 15, she heard the sax in the middle of a Latin piece. “When I heard the sax melody with the Brazilian harmonies and Latin rhythms, I knew that’s what I wanted to do with my life,” she explained. The artist was born in Portland, Oregon, but she feels very connected to San Antonio. “The concert in San Antonio will be special for me because it’s where my mother is from and I’ll get to visit with my family. It will be just like a homecoming,” Jessy J explained. “I love San Antonio and the music is an expression of love – I want the audience to be able to kick back and enjoy the music and be worry-free,” she said. “Music lets you stay in the moment,” she added. Jessy J has had several awards and recognitions. Her 2008 debut CD, Tequila Moon on Peak Records, was one of the most successful recordings in contemporary jazz.

Both Billboard and Radio & Records named the title track Number One Song of the Year. Her sophomore release, True Love, demonstrates the artist’s ability to engage and captivate audiences, earning another top spot for her original song “Tropical Rain.” Jessy J also received high critical acclaim from publications across the board, including Latina Style Magazine, Jazziz Magazine and Saxophone Journal Magazine. She was even credited with starting a new movement in Jazz in the May cover story of JAZZIZ magazine and “increasing the boundaries

of jazz both musically and demographically”; and “revolutionizing jazz” as a young Latina by People Espanol. The accomplished musician also sings and dances. Jessy J sang background vocals for Michael Bolton, played with the Henry Mancini Jazz Orchestra and performed in the off-Broadway production of “Blast!” However, what she is most proud of is being able to pursue her dream. “I am so happy to be a Latina woman pursuing my dream in music. And I love to share my joy with others through the music,” she said.

TDI hosts Diabetes Alert Day

Diabetes is a disease that affects nearly 26 million adults and children in the United States. In addition, 79 million Americans (one in three American adults) have pre-diabetes which puts them at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. By Dennis M. Ayotte [email protected] On Tuesday, the Texas Diabetes Institute (TDI) hosted the Diabetes Alert Day Health Fair to educate the community on the risk factors of diabetes and offer free screenings. TDI offered attendees the opportunity to have their glucose and cholesterol levels checked and find out their body mass index. In addition, there were tables set up and volunteers on hand to educate people on diabetes research and provide information on how sugar and sodium affects the body. “Everything about diabetes as far as complications is preventable, many people think that some of the

things that happen with diabetes are inevitable—and that’s not true. Everything with diabetes is preventable with proper care and early care,” stated TDI’s Clinical Assistant Professor of Diabetes Research, Curtis Triplitt, PharmD, CDE. “It’s better to know and get it treated than to ignore it long term,” he added. Risk factors for diabetes include: • Being overweight • Being over the age of 40 • Having a parent, brother or sister with diabetes • Having a family background that is Hispanic/Latino, AmericanIndian, African-American, Alaska Native or Pacific Islander • Being fairly inactive and exercising fewer than three times a week • High blood pressure • High cholesterol • Dark brown or black thickened patches of skin called acanthosis nigricans • Having a history of heart disease

Therefore, early diagnosis is critical to successful treatment and preventing complications such as heart disease, blindness, kidney disease, stroke, amputation and death. Armas en las universidades: Un hecho que pronto podría ser realidad

Por Angela Covo & Lucia Almanza [email protected] [email protected] Seis proyectos de ley que apoyan armas en los campus universitarios de una forma u otra están llegando a su paso por la legislatura de Texas. House Bill 750 por Rep. Joe Driver (R-Garland) se aprobó en el comité de Homeland Security and Public Safety la semana pasada, 5-3. La nueva ley requiere que las universidades públicas permitan que personas debidamente autorizadas puedan cargar con armas personales en las universidades públicas. También permite que las instituciones privadas puedan prohibir armas personales, después de “consultar con los estudiantes, profesores y personal”. El Rep. David Simpson (RLongview), autor del proyecto de ley número 86, titulado “Personal Protection on Campus Act,” permitiría estudiantes que tienen por lo menos 21 años y la autorización del estado para cargar armas en las universidades, una cuestión que polariza la Facultad de la Universidad, los estudiantes y los administradores. Simpson explica que la idea no es nueva. “Por lo menos 71 campus en tres estados permiten llevar sus armas en el campus, y al menos de 30 de ellas han tenido el privilegio por más de cinco años sin ningún incidente”, dijo Simpson. Simpson, cuyo hijo William atiende la universidad de A & M, cree que se trata de una cuestión de autodefensa. “La defensa personal es un derecho inalienable…y debe garantizarse por el gobierno, no revocada– los derechos básicos no se deben de prohibir”, dijo Simpson.

Chris Ramírez, miembro del gobierno estudiantil y estudiante de contabilidad en la Universidad del Estado de Texas (TSU por sus siglas en ingles), voto contra esta cuestión de llevar armas en el campus en diciembre. “He descubierto que muchos estudiantes no quieren ver armas en el campus, y así me sentí obligado a representar a mis electores,” dijo. Personalmente, Ramírez dice que se siente cómodo de cualquier manera. “Crimen no ha sido un problema en el campus y creo que la cuestión es tan polémica, que era lo mejor hacer mi trabajo y representar a los estudiantes”, dijo. La primera vez que el gobierno estudiantil votó a favor de cargas armas en el campus de TSU, la Presidenta del Consejo Estudiantil, Melanie Ferrari bloqueó el proyecto de ley en un memorando de veto al día siguiente. En el memo, explica que permitir llevar armas en el campus no “afectará positivamente a nuestra experiencia educativa en cualquier modo tangible. También apuntó que llevar armas a la universidad podría resultar en una situación aún más peligrosa en el caso de un tirador en el campus. …”El riesgo es demasiado grande,” escribe en el memorando de veto. Pero previas escenas trágicas en los campus universitarios son una gran parte de la razón que legisladores apoyan cargar armas en universidades públicas, y por eso presentaron los proyectos de ley. El 16 de abril de 2007, Cho Seung-Hui , un estudiante en la Universidad de Virginia Tech mató a 32 personas e hirió a muchas otras antes de suicidarse. Por eso Simpson esta completamente en desacuerdo con Ferrari. “El primer deber del Gobierno es proteger la vida humana y preservar el derecho de una persona para defenderse a sí mismo”. El verdadero punto de la cuestión es que delincuentes- por prohibiciones existentes, desarmen a ciudadanos respetuosos de la ley, haciéndolos blancos fáciles

Boosting the brainpower community in S.A. Local community leaders and a brand new nonprofit join forces to boost brainpower in San Antonio – by encouraging students to pursue higher education and presenting scholarship opportunities. By Angela Covo [email protected] Earlier this week at Café College, John T. Montford, General Motors Foundation Chairman, announced the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, which offers $4.5 million worth of scholarships to 1,100 students nationwide. Montford discussed the program during San Antonio Independent School District’s “Discovering Collegiate Achievers” event. The Buick Achievers Scholarship program is for high school seniors or high school graduates who are attending college for the first time in the fall of 2011 and who plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited four-year college or university for the entire 2011-12 academic year. The scholarships will help students who plan to major in a course of study that focuses on STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math).

Certain design, marketing, accounting, finance and business majors are also eligible. Candidates for this scholarship should also demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industries based on the chosen area of study. In association with Generation TX San Antonio (GenTX SA), a new nonprofit focused on creating a college-going culture, the “Discovering Collegiate Achievers” event brought together more than 500 students from all 10 SAISD high schools, including 250 Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas, the Gamma Sigma Girls, and 250 ROTC participants. The main objective of GenTX is to inform and assist students interested in higher education - and to get all students on the road to higher education, by providing information peer-to-peer. These students will be the first trained student “GenTXperts” in San Antonio. GenTX SA is a grassroots social movement that uses interactive media, meetings and other resources to get kids on the path to college by providing information online and at special events. artículos sin pagar impuestos. “Si van cuatro personas dentro del mismo carro, se suman esos $300 dólares que le pertenecen a cada quien, lo que quiere decir que se puede pasar hasta una cantidad de $1,200 dólares en un artículo o en varios” dijo Pérez. En el sitio de internet de la Guía Paisano, usted también podrá disfrutar de la facilidad de trazar su ruta desde el punto de partida hasta su destino. “La ventaja de trazar su ruta es que usted podrá saber el tiempo de su recorrido, las millas exactas que utilizará en su viaje, y por consiguiente, la cantidad de gasolina que gastará durante su viaje”, expresó el Pérez. “También podrá saber la ubicación de las casetas de cobro y el costo de cada una de ellas”. Para saber exactamente cuánto dinero se gastará en las casillas de paga, se puede comprar la tarjeta pre pagada de Caminos y Puentes Federales, por la cantidad que se va a usar durante el viaje. Así, en lugar de hacer la fila para pagar la caseta, se va por el carril de usos múltiples, y paga con su tarjeta. El programa también ofrece varios números de asistencia que pueden ser marcados desde un celular americano, estando en México. “Cuando usted marque cualquier numero de asistencia, va a ser atendido por una persona especializada en el tema que usted desee recibir

En el caso del permiso de automóvil, se puede tramitar el permiso sin tener que hacer una larga fila, pues el consulado mexicano cuenta con ese servicio. “Es importante que el permiso del carro sea vigente, y que pertenezca al carro que se va a conducir, de lo contrario va a tener problemas al cruzar al lado mexicano”, comentó Pérez. Otra de las ventajas es el apoyo y las herramientas que ofrece el programa Paisano a las personas que regresan a vivir a México y desean

desarrollarse como empresarios, o bien, comenzar un negocio. “El programa ofrece asesoría a todas aquellas personas que quieren regresar a vivir a México, y establecer un nuevo negocio”, expresó Pérez. Cesar E. Chavez March will honor the memory of the union leader By Valerie Godines Fitzgerald [email protected] Thousands of people will participate this Saturday at the 15th annual Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice. “It’s going to be a big march. We are expecting 20,000 to 50,000 people from all over Texas. Dolores Huerta, who is an icon, will be there. We are very excited,” said Jaime Martinez, founder and president of the Cesar E. Chavez Legacy and Educational Foundation, which is co-sponsoring the march with the city. “I invite the community on March the 26 at 8 a.m. in the heart of the barrio on the west side of San Antonio, South Brazos and Guadalupe. We have Dolores Huerta, the co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America. It’s exciting to see the movement, especially here in San Antonio.” Chavez, a farm worker, became a civil rights and union leader who gave a voice to a largely invisible workforce that toiled in the fields. He, along with Dolores Huerta, founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers. The march begins with a community fair at 8 a.m. at the corner of Guadalupe and South Brazos

streets. At 10 a.m. participants will begin a two-mile walk to Alamo Plaza for the program. The grand marshal of this year’s march is Tejano music legend Raulito Navaira with special guest of honor Huerta. On Monday night, there was a student art presentation at 6:30 p.m. at the foundation center, where dozens of the students’ art pieces were displayed. “We are very proud that we are highlighting some of the artwork by students from elementary to high school that are drawing now for la causa. You have fourth graders, fifth graders, tenth graders drawing about the struggles of the legacy of Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. We are excited,” said Martinez. “It all started with Noe Garza, teacher of Columbia Heights Elementary School from Harlandale ISD, who called me one day several years ago and invited me to his school,” said Martinez. “I met many children and looked at many of their drawings. They are not only talented, but they are also learning. Their drawings are very direct. You see the sun, the farm workers working in the fields in their drawings,” said Garza, the elementary teacher. “To do this project, we research and discuss the issues that the

farm workers went through. This work is from my students as well as from students from Harlandale High School where the Art teacher, Felipe Reyes, did a great job. The students are trying to convey the message of la causa through their art. This year we decided to use a different angle and decided to do it in watercolor. I feel my students did a great job and we are proud of them,” added Garza. AT&T por comprar a la compañia T-Mobile

(EFE).- AT&T se mostró convencida de que podrá comprar a TMobile USA y convertirse así en el líder de la telefonía móvil, con 130 millones de clientes, pese a que el 80 por ciento del mercado quedará en manos de sólo dos compañías. “Este es probablemente el mercado de telefonía móvil más competitivo del mundo. Los estadounidenses pueden elegir entre cinco operadores”, afirmó el consejero delegado de AT&T, Randall Stephenson, en una vídeoconferencia para presentar la compra anunciada el domingo. Hasta ahora tenía el liderazgo del mercado Verizon Wireless, una empresa conjunta entre la estadounidense Verizon y la británica Vodafone que se había forjado como la operadora capaz de competir cara a cara con AT&T, incluso pese a que ésta gozó de la exclusiva del iPhone desde que hace cuatro años salió al mercado. La compra por 39 millones de dólares de la cuarta operadora del país con 33.7 millones de clientes, supone un paso de gigante para AT&T, que pasará a tener un 30 por ciento más de clientes que su inmediata competidora y el doble que la siguiente, Sprint Nextel. Esta última empresa, de la que se había publicado que también negociaba una fusión con T-Mobile USA, parece ser la gran perdedora, ya que su capacidad para competir se verá reducida, algo que los inversores entendieron claramente, pues a primera hora, sus acciones bajaban el 15 por ciento en la Bolsa. En cambio, AT&T, la tercera mayor firma no financiera ni petrolera del país por facturación según Forbes, comenzó la sesión bursátil con avances del 2 por ciento, mientras que las acciones de Deutsche Telekom en los Estados Unidos subían un 12 por ciento y hasta Verizon avanzaba un 2.5 por ciento. Las asociaciones de consumidores y algunos analistas no ven, sin embargo, tan beneficiosa la operación. UTSA students restore East Side homes By Lucia Almanza [email protected] Students from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) College of Architecture will volunteer their time over the next two weekends of March 26 and 27 and April 2 and 3 to help repair 13 homes on the Dignowity Hill Historic District, located about two miles from downtown. Students will be exposed to real-life work situations and apply knowledge gained in the classroom through this hands-on project. The Students Together Achieving Revitalization (STAR) project was initiated as a result of the partnership between the City of San Antonio’s Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) and UTSA CoA. Members of the Historic Preservation Association (HPA), a UTSA student organization, will also be there to serve as team leaders at each location and learn to manage and motivate the volunteers. “We will have approximately 300 students volunteering this year,” said Trisha Logan, Planner for the City’s Office of Historic Preservation. “The student volunteers will remove and replace rotted siding and trim, prepare for and paint the exterior of homes, do historic window repair and other minor repairs.” The two weekend event will not only provide students with a hands-on experience, but will also provide a proactive approach to end further deterioration of low income historic districts. All students are supervised by OHP staff, CoA faculty and volunteer professionals throughout the event. Students work hard on this project in an effort to save the 1920’s historic homes that are in danger of being demolished. “Each STAR project strongly relies on community service as a vehicle for learning and unique experiences not offered in the classroom,” said Logan. “CoA professors use service learning as a teaching strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction while teaching civic responsibility and strengthening communities.” “Students have said it was a rewarding experience, as a learning opportunity but more importantly because they were able to help someone in need and contribute to the revitalization of a historic neighborhood,” said Logan.

WEBB Party 2011 benefiting AIDS Foundation By Dennis M. Ayotte Jr. [email protected] On Friday April 8, the San Antonio AIDS Foundation (SAAF) will host WEBB Party 2011. Now in its 20th year, the WEBB Party is SAAF’s most successful fundraiser and official Fiesta event. SAAF’s WEBB Party is scheduled to take place at the historic Sunset Station from 7:30 p.m. to midnight. The theme of this year’s party will be “Supernova,” a futuristic cosmic explosion infused with glamour. Dressing up in themed outfits is encouraged. The event is titled “Supernova” for a reason, David Ewell, SAAF executive director told La Prensa. “A supernova is a stellar explosion, and this year’s WEBB party will be a stellar celebration with a laser light show, dance perfor-

mances, great food and drink and plenty of Fiesta spirit.” The evening’s entertainment will include “Cosmic Vogue” by Agosto Cuellar, The Austin City Showgirls, Supernova Laser Spectacular and The Flyboys of Flag Troupe Houston. The WEBB Party will also offer scrumptious food from dozens of area restaurants. Like many other Fiesta events, the WEBB Party will issue a commemorative metal featuring the WEBB spider logo, a design by Eric Fonseca. Because of fundraisers such as these, SAAF is able to offer the most comprehensive services to residents of South Texas. SAAF offers HIV prevention education, free HIV testing, medical services, medical and social case management, a transitional housing program, hot meals and a dental/oral
