Accessing Virtual Programs The Portage Community Senior Center uses Zoom, an on-line, internet-based videoconferencing program. There is no charge to use this platform. You will not be required to create an account. Staff have put together a “Cheat Sheet” which provides tips and guidance on how to use Zoom. Let us know if you’d like us to send you a copy.
Program Registration You MUST register for ALL events, programs and activities. You DO NOT need to register for groups. Participants can register for classes or renew their memberships by visiting the Reception Desk at the Portage Community Senior Center. Phone registration is available. While staff may be able to take your registration for a fee-based event over the phone, it is your payment that guarantees your spot. Because plans are often made based on registration numbers, early registration is encouraged. Payments can be made with cash, check or credit card. The PCSC is supported by the City of Portage, contributions, memberships and grants. The PCSC offers services and activities to persons over 50 years of age. Annual membership fees are $30 for Portage residents and $40 for all others. No one will be denied membership due to an inability to pay. The PCSC Newsletter is mailed bi-monthly to members.

Focus on Membership at the Charles & Lynn Zhang Portage Community Senior Center Our goal is to provide the best services available, while promoting personal growth, health, friendship and independence for adults aged 50 and over. •
Annual Base Membership: $30 for Portage residents/$40 for non-residents A Base Membership entitles an individual to participate in all educational, social/recreational, volunteer and other regularly scheduled activities and special events. A Base Membership is good for one year from the date of registration and renewal notices are mailed to the member prior to expiration.
• Lifetime Membership: $300 A Lifetime Membership, like a Base Membership, entitles an individual to participate in all educational, social/recreational, volunteer and other regularly scheduled activities and special events. A Lifetime Membership is good for the lifetime of that member. Does NOT include membership add-ons. •
Annual Virtual Membership: $20 A Virtual Membership allows individuals access to all PCSC virtually scheduled activities only. This membership option is ideal for those who may be unable, or do not wish to leave their home, or those who live out of state.

Not interested in a PCSC membership but occasionally want to participate in activities? Participation in regular activities is available to non-members at the Daily Drop-in Rate of $5 per day. Activities with an associated fee would be available at the Non-Member Rates.

Lost membership cards/key tags are replaced one time at no charge. Thereafter, a $5 replacement fee will apply.
Add-on Memberships To accommodate PCSC members who wish to use specialized facility amenities in the new Portage Community Senior Center, new add-on levels of membership are available. The new membership levels will include fitness center use and/or pickleball related activities. To purchase a Fitness or Pickleball Membership, a Base Membership is required. Annual Fitness Center Membership: $25 (plus Base Membership) A Fitness Membership is required to use the weight machines and equipment in the fitness center. Upon purchase of a Fitness Membership, an orientation with our Fitness Coordinator will be scheduled. Once an orientation to the fitness center is complete and the waiver is signed, members can get started on their PCSC fitness journey! Annual Pickleball Membership: $50 (plus Base Membership) Consider purchasing an Annual Pickleball Membership as an add-on to your Base Membership. This Pickleball Membership waives all Open Play fees and provides a discount on League Play pricing. Following is additional information on our Pickleball Program:

Clinics – Whether picking up a pickleball paddle for the first time, or looking to brush up on your current game, both Beginner Level (I, II, III) and Intermediate Level Clinics will be offered. In honor of Veterans Day, the Portage Community Senior Center is again collaborating with the Air Zoo to offer a very special Veterans Day breakfast event. This is a great opportunity to gather with fellow Veterans, meet special guests and enjoy all the Air Zoo has to offer. After breakfast, participants are welcome to stay and enjoy the displays and comradery on location. Veterans attend for FREE; registration fee for guests is $15. Aging Mastery Program (AMP) Thursdays, 10 AM – 12 PM September 8 – November 10 $20 Member / $30 Non-member Space is limited. Please call PCSC to register. Kimberly Middleton and Claire VanderVelden, Facilitators with Multiple Local Speakers AMP is a ten-part health and wellness program for individuals 50 and over. AMP was developed by the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and has been successful at helping older adults in their ‘aging well’ journey. This is a comprehensive and fun approach to living that celebrates the gift of longevity. Topics include: Navigating Longer Lives; Exercise and You; Healthy Eating and Hydration; Sleep; Medication management; Financial Fitness; Advance Planning; Healthy Relation; Falls Prevention; and Community Engagement. Matter of Balance Mondays, 1 – 3:30 PM September 12 – October 31 Free - Call to register at (269) 329 - 4555 Are you wondering what happened to your balance, wobbling a bit when you walk, or wavering some when you stand? Nearly one-third of seniors over the age of 65 will fall each year, and that percentage increases by 50% by the age of 80. Yet falling is NOT a natural part of aging. This class helps address and change the body’s reaction to a number of causes for loss of balance. This is a popular eight-week workshop that helps older adults stay safe, active, and independent.

Body Rebound - Onsite Monday-Wednesday-Friday, 9:15 – 10:15 AM September 7 – October 28 $42 Members / $52 Non-members Instructor: Debbie Snell Body Rebound is for all levels of fitness but especially for new students or individuals who haven’t exercised in a long time. The class components include: stretching, aerobic (standing & seated combo), strengthening and balance. Leg strength is the biggest component necessary for balance, so we concentrate on this throughout the entire class. We have a variety of different types of equipment that we work with to make the class fun, yet very productive.
Seated Tai Chi Wednesdays, 9 – 10 AM September 7 – October 26 $55 Members / $65 Non - members Instructor: Dr. Tao Improve your mood, reduce stress and get better sleep through Tai Chi. This slow-motion martial art also builds strength and balance and requires no prior experience. This class is all done from a seated chair.
Barre is a full body toning class with low impact, standing leg and core work. The perfect class for relatively active seniors. Modifications can be made for every pose. Weights are provided but you can bring your own if desired.

Mindfulness in the Mornings --- on site or virtual via Zoom Tuesdays, 10 – 10:30 AM September 13 – October 25 $24 Members / $34 Non-members Instructor: Melissa Stout Wake up your body and mind by starting your morning with a 30-minute guided meditation. Each week will introduce a new theme to help manage things such as slowing down, finding gratitude, working through anxiety, and self-care. Learn different styles of breathing techniques each week. A journaling prompt will be provided each class for your personal reflective writing, with an option of interactive sharing. This is the perfect class for any age and there is no experience necessary.
Standing Tai Chi Tuesdays, 9 – 10 AM September 6 – October 25 (No class 9/27) $55 Members / $65 Non-members Instructor: Matu Kurzava Activate the Healer within through Tai Chi for health and relaxation. Using slow, fluid movements, Tai Chi has multiple health boosting effects, including increased blood flow, improved cardiovascular fitness, brain plasticity, better sleep, and improved mood. You will be taught simple Tai Chi principles including breath, posture, relaxation, and mindfulness. These techniques are easy to learn, easy to apply and need no special knowledge or training, require no special equipment or clothing, and can be practiced by all people. Ladies, it is time to take responsibility for your own personal protection! This women’s self-defense class is intended to raise the consciousness of self-awareness in all surroundings. Along with the ability to mentally and physically defend oneself so that women can be prepared for situations that may be potentially dangerous. Absolute Home Care and Medical Staffing is partnering with PCSC to offer a Blood Pressure Clinic at the Portage Community Senior Center. Appointments are the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays from 10 AM – 12 PM. Anyone is welcome. Please call the PCSC at (269) 329-4555 to schedule your specific day/time slot.
Do you hold tension in your shoulders? Do you suffer from headaches or occasionally get a stiff neck? Massage can help alleviate muscle pain, increase joint flexibility, and reduce swelling. Come and experience the benefits of massage at the PCSC. Appointments are $40 for a half hour session or $70 for a one-hour session. Participation can be an empowering experience, helping members feel better prepared to cope with their unique situation. Support group members are typically the spouse, adult child, other family member or friend of someone with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. Come enjoy this fun-filled game played with a beach ball. Chair volleyball is great for upper body, mobility, and joint flexibility. It enhances your muscle tone, reflexes, hand-to-eye coordination, and endurance. The game is played with a beach ball and a five-foot-high net. Rules are similar to regular volleyball except “cheeks” on the chair!
The PCSC Choir is looking for people who enjoy singing. There is no audition or requirement to have a great voice. The choir enjoys getting together and rehearsing September through May on Thursdays.

Frequently Asked Questions Do I have to live in Portage to be a member of the PCSC? No, Portage residency is not a requirement for membership! While located in Portage, we welcome older adults from all over Kalamazoo County and beyond. How old do I have to be to become a member? If you are at least 50 years of age, you can become a member. Whether working or retired and enjoying your golden years, we have something for everyone. Is membership to the Center required? Membership is required to participate in all social/recreational clubs and groups. Non-members may travel with the Portage Community Senior Center and register for various classes but pay a higher price. Membership is not required to take advantage of services such as the Center Café, transportation, clinics, etc. What are the Center’s hours of operation? The Portage Community Senior Center is currently open Monday-Friday, 8AM-5PM. Do you offer evening and weekend activities? We work hard to accommodate a variety of schedules and activities. While it won’t be immediately, we do anticipate expanding our opportunities for social engagement, health and wellness. I have an idea for a new program or activity. Who would I talk to? Programming at the Portage Community Senior Center is done as a team. If there is a program or activity you are interested in seeing on our calendar, please talk to one of our team members. Are we required to check in at a kiosk when participating in an activity? Yes please! There are kiosks located at both the east and west entrances. Checking in for your activities and events allows us to accurately track participation for reporting and funding purposes, as well as safety reasons. Friends of the Portage Senior Center Annual Feature Presentation Series - Staff Favorites 3rd Wednesday, 2 – 4:30 PM “It’s in the Bag” Purse Sale Saturday, September 17, 9 AM – 1 PM Portage Community Senior Center The Annual “It’s in the Bag” Purse Sale will be held in the NEW PORTAGE COMMUNITY SENIOR CENTER! Join us for the ultimate Handbag and Jewelry experience! On Saturday, September 17th from 9 AM – 1 PM, the Annual Friends of the Portage Senior Center “It’s in the Bag” Purse Sale will be held in the beautiful and spacious new Portage Community Senior Center. More space brings opportunities for more great experiences! This year, in addition to the name-brand bags, purses, wallets, the large selection of jewelry and our silent auction of designer bags, you can sit in on a breakout session and learn fashion tips, make-up tips and more. Need a break from shopping? You’ll be able to relax while enjoying refreshments, live music, and exclusive event popup vendors! Make it a friends or family day, this event is for all ages! Whether taking time for yourself or coming as a group, you’re sure to find a few bargains and leave happier than when you came! This is a fundraising event with all proceeds directly benefiting programming, scholarships, and special projects for the Portage Community Senior Center! Thank you for supporting “Our vision of a community that understands and embraces the power of healthy aging to positively transform lives!” Wait, one last thing! Cleaning out your closets and drawers?! The Friends of the PSC is currently accepting donations of gently used purses of all sizes, wallets, jewelry, and scarves. Donations can be delivered to the new Portage Community Senior Center (203 E. Centre Avenue) by Friday, September 9th.
Timing is Everything! We are looking forward to the ability to offer a wide variety of additional activities, classes, events and more! In order to be respectful of those using the space before and after each activity, it is important to remember that the scheduled “start” and “end” time of each activity, class, etc., includes time for set-up and breakdown. We thank you in advance for your understanding and support.
Climate Change at the PCSC As we get to know our new building and our new building gets to know us, we encourage our members to consider wearing layers when coming to the PCSC for events and activities. This will ensure a level of comfort and enjoyment for everyone who visits.

Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy - his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) in a coastal town in Florida. He decides to hire Dell (Kevin Hart), a struggling parolee who’s trying to reconnect with his ex and his young son.
