The Scouting program at St. Monica is more than just an activity for our youth to learn about the outdoors. Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts provide fun, fellowship, and training to our youth as well as youth in our community. Scouting emphasizes honesty, self-reliance, and respect. A Scout is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties and respects the convictions of others in matters of custom and religion. To encourage members to grow stronger in their faith, the Catholic church developed the Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII religious emblems programs in conjunction with the Boy Scouts, which are conducted through the selfless service of St. Monica scout leaders and volunteers. This Scout Sunday, we congratulate all the scouts and volunteers who are active in Scouting at St. Monica and offer a special prayer and word of the thanks for your service to your parish. El programa de los Scouts en Sta. Mónica es más que solo una actividad para que los jóvenes aprendan acerca de las actividades al aire libre. Los Boy Scouts y Cub Scouts proven diversión, convivencia, y entrenamientos a nuestros jóvenes al igual que los jóvenes en nuestra comunidad. Los Scous enfatizan la honestidad, confianza en si mismo, y respeto. Un Scout tiene respeto a Dios. Es fiel en sus tareas religiosas y respeta las creeencias y religiones de otros. A Note From Your Pastor Una Nota de su Parroco The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Penance, Confession) The Church recommends that we go to confession at least once a year and any time we are in a state of mortal sin. As the Lenten season approaches this is the time that many of us choose to make that annual confession. Here are a few guidelines if it has been awhile. 1. Start by making an examination of conscience. This is an important time of reflection before going to confession. I recommend using something like the Ten Commandments or the Beatitudes to help recall the ways you may have sinned. Start with the big stuff and then try to recall the habits of sin or ongoing struggles. It can be difficult and painful to recall these times of sin but it is important that we do so. Perhaps it is helpful to remember the purpose of this sacrament is not to judge you but to forgive you. If we want sins forgiven we have to know what they are. 2. Walk in. In our confessional you can talk to the priest behind the screen or go face to face, the choice is yours. 3. “Bless me Father for I have sinned…etc.” It is a custom in our country to begin with this phrase and then tell the priest how long it has been since your last confession. While this is perfectly fine, it is not necessary. In the “Rite of Penance” confession actually begins with a warm welcome and kind greeting from the priest and the sign of the cross. The priest then invites you to the sacrament with a brief prayer and he may choose to also share a Scripture with you. 4. Confession, Counsel, Penance, and the Act of Contrition. Tell the priest your sins…all of them. Remember he is not there to judge you he is there to offer the forgiveness of God and the Church. After you are done he may or may not offer some spiritual guidance. He will assign a penance, which is usually a prayer or an act of charity. It is meant to be a simple expression of sorrow for your sins. Once you receive your penance then you make an act of contrition. In our confessional the act of contrition is printed on a little card if you need it. However you can simply tell Jesus you are sorry in your own words or ask the priest to help you. 5. Absolution In ancient times this would have been called the “form” of the sacrament (your sins being the “matter”). It is the prayer the priest offers for you as the ordained representative of God and the Church. With the contrition you expressed for your sins and this prayer you are “reconciled” to God and the Catholic community!

El Sacramento de la Reconciliación (Penitencia, Confesión) La Iglesia recomienda que vayamos a la confesión por lo menos una vez al año y en cualquier momento que nos encontremos en pecado mortal. Al acercarse la Cuaresma este es un momento que muchos de nosotros escogemos para hacer una confesión anual. Aquí están unos consejos si no ha ido a la confesión en mucho tiempo. 1. Empiece por hacer un examen de conciencia. Este es un tiempo importante de reflexión antes de ir a la confesión. Les recomiendo usar como guía los Diez Mandamientos o las Bienaventuranzas para ayudarle a recordar las formas en que pudo haber pecado. Comience con las cosas grandes y luego trate de recordar los hábitos de pecado o las luchas que tiene. Puede ser difícil y doloroso recordar estos tiempos de pecado, pero es importante que lo haga. En nuestro confesionario usted puede hablar con un sacerdote detrás de una cortina o cara a cara, usted escoge. 3. “Perdóneme Padre que he pecado…etc.” Es una costumbre en nuestros países empezar con esta frase y después decirle al Sacerdote cuanto tiempo ha pasado desde que hizo su última confesión. Aunque esto está bien, no es necesario. En el “Rito de Penitencia” la confesión empieza con una cálida bienvenida y un pequeño saludo de parte del Sacerdote y haciendo la señal de la cruz. El Sacerdote después le invita al Sacramento con una breve oración y tal vez también escoja una Escritura para usted. 4. Confesión, Consejería, Penitencia, y el Acto de Contrición. Diga al Sacerdote todos sus pecados…TODOS. Recuerde el Sacerdote no está aquí para juzgarlo sino para ofrecerle el perdón de Dios y la Iglesia. Después que termine tal vez él le pueda ofrecer alguna guía espiritual. Le asignará una penitencia, que es usualmente una oración o un acto de caridad. Esto pretende ser una simple expresión de dolor por sus pecados. Una vez que reciba su penitencia entonces hace un acto de contrición. En el confesionario del acto de contrición está impreso en una tarjeta si lo necesita. Aunque usted puede simplemente decirle a Jesús lo arrepentido que está con sus propias palabras o pídale al Sacerdote que le ayude. 5. Absolución. En la antigüedad esto habría llamado la "forma" del Sacramento (tus pecados siendo la "materia"). Es la oración que el Sacerdote ofrece para usted como representante ordenado de Dios y la Iglesia. Con el arrepentimiento que usted expresa por sus pecados y esta oración es la que lo "reconcilia" con Dios y con la comunidad Católica.

Stewardship at St. Monica The Stewardship Message in Scripture Those who practice stewardship know how it affects every aspect of their lives. They are also aware that Holy Scripture is filled with advice and guidance relating to the ways to live a life of stewardship. In fact, a sermon could be given every week in which stewardship could be referenced in the day’s readings. Summarizing scripture from a stewardship perspective, Jesus tells us to: Love others, reach out to those in need, and you will enrich their lives and bring them joy and understanding in a world which can sometimes seem dark and lonely to many. If you do this, you will find that the spirit you provide to others will be returned to you by God, and you will also find your life brighter and more positive and more fulfilling. “Your good deeds… glorify your Heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:16)

MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT

BOY SCOUTS AND CUB SCOUTS ABOUT THE MINISTRY The Scouting program at St. Monica is a dynamic program that provides fun, fellowship, and important skill training to our youth. It emphasizes honesty, self-reliance, and respect along with working to build character, citizenship, and personal fitness. The success of scouting relies on our wonderful volunteers who work tirelessly to make sure that scouting is beneficial to all. SPIRITUAL GIFTS REQUIRED: Relaying the Scout Law and its principles to scouts as they continue to build their relationship with God and use their God-given gifts to help others. SKILLS REQUIRED: Compassion, patience, organizational TIME COMMITMENT: Cub Scouts meet on Wednesday evenings, and Boy Scouts meet on Monday evenings with typically one weekend outing per month. There are many different volunteer roles with differing time commitments. HOW THIS MINISTRY MAKES A DIFFERENCE: Scouts and volunteers at St. Monica not only give back to the parish and school but also to the community through their work at St. Vincent DePaul, spreading mulch and picking up trash at our parish workday, cleaning the church, and volunteering at the St. Monica festival. HOW YOU CAN HELP: Many volunteers give their time so Scouting's members will be involved in a quality program. Merit badge counselors help Scouts learn more about vocations and hobbies. Volunteers serve behind the scenes on committees and in leadership roles. Volunteers also provide training for these leaders and offer a continuing service to our Cub Scout pack and Boy Scout troop. More volunteers are always needed to serve as leaders or share their special skills with young people and other adults. English Marriage Retreat This one-day retreat is a requirement for all Englishspeaking engaged couples getting married at St. Monica, but any newly-married, engaged or married couple interested in learning more about the Sacrament of Marriage can attend. The retreat focuses on the Church teachings on the Sacrament of Marriage. The date is Saturday, February 28 in the St. Augustine Room from 8:30 AM -5:00 PM. The cost is $10.00/couple, plus a dish to share. Please notify the parish if babysitting is needed; if there is a need, babysitting will be provided. 2015 Honduran Mission Trip Info Meetings We would love for you to join us on our next trip this June! We do provide some medical services but you do not have to have any medical background or be able to speak Spanish. If interested in going on our Honduran mission trip, you must attend one information meeting. Our next info meetings are February 22, and March 8 at 2:30 in the St. Augustine room.

Confirmation for Adults Prep Classes Confirmation preparation for adults will begin on, Sunday, February 22. Confirmation is at Ss. Peter & Paul Cathedral on May 31. This short Confirmation prep program is for adults or older teens who have at least eight years of religious education in the Catholic Church, who go to Mass weekly, and who are in good standing with the Church. The preparation consists of six sessions and a retreat, plus a reunion after Confirmation. The sessions are 4:30 - 6:00 pm on Sundays. The Confirmation Sponsor for each candidate should attend at least four of the six sessions, plus the retreat. One hundred percent attendance is required for this short program. Religious Education Parent First Communion Session The parents, not children, are invited to a meeting on Monday, February 16 at 7:00 pm in church regarding their child’s preparation for their First Communion. This is for the parents of students 2nd-8th grade who are preparing at St. Monica School or in the Sunday School classes. Students have received fliers with this information. Please make sure your son/daughter is in a sacrament class in Sunday School to attend this meeting. Parent Confirmation Session The parents, not students, are invited to a meeting on Tuesday, March 3 at 7:00 PM in church regarding junior high students who will be preparing for Confirmation this spring for the reception of the sacrament in the fall of 8th grade. February is Black History Month a great time to learn more about St. Monica, our patron saint! St. Monica, our patron, spent her life in prayer for her family. We seek to follow her example offering our lives in prayer, sacrifice, and good works for the salvation of man. Monica was born in 322 A.D. into a Christian family in Tagaste, North Africa. Her parents selected a husband for her, a pagan named Patricius, who was a bad-tempered man and unfaithful to her. To add insult to injury, his mother, who taunted her and told lies about her, lived with them. But Monica ignored the indignities they heaped upon her and practiced good works instead, giving to the poor and helping the sick while still caring for her family. Monica and Patricius had three children. The eldest son, Augustine, although a talented scholar, was a source of constant worry for Monica. She prayed constantly that he and her husband would someday join her in worship. Eventually, her faith and kindness were partially rewarded: her husband and his mother converted to Christianity. But Monica's son Augustine seemed hopeless. Although she set a good example for him and did everything in her power to ensure he grew to be a good, decent man, she simply couldn't make him behave in a Christian fashion or understand the importance of proper conduct. He ran away from school, returned to the house and insulted Monica. She forced him out, but took him back after a voice told her, "your son is with you," which she thought meant with her in the faith. He took a mistress, had a son, and ignored his mother's protests. Still, Monica did not give up. She realized she couldn't do everything on her own and wasn't afraid to ask others for help, even if it embarrassed her. Monica sought the help of her local bishop, who encouraged her. "It is not possible the son of so many tears should perish," he told her. Eventually, Monica turned to the Bishop Ambrose in Italy, who brought Augustine to God by appealing to his intelligence instead of his emotions. Monica's goal eventually came to pass, in ways she didn't even foresee. Her son became so strongly drawn to the faith that he was eventually canonized - as St. Augustine, one of the Church's greatest teachers and philosophers.

Sta. Mónica, nuestra Santa Patrona, pasó su vida orando por su familia. Nosotros buscamos seguir su ejemplo ofreciendo nuestras vidas en oración, sacrificio, y buenas obras para la salvación del hombre. Sta. Mónica nació en el año 322 A.C. en una familia Cristiana en Tagaste, al Norte de África. Sus padres le escogieron un esposo, un pagano llamado Patricio, quien era un hombre de mal temperamento e infiel. Para colmo, su madre, que se mofaba de ella y decía mentiras acerca de ella, vivió con ellos. Pero Sta. Mónica ignoró las indignidades que le echaron en cara y practicaba buenas obras por estas infamias, ayudando a los pobres y a los enfermos mientras que cuidaba de su familia. Sta. Mónica y Patricio tuvieron tres hijos. El hijo mayor, Agustín, aunque era un talentoso erudito, era una fuente de constante preocupación para Sta. Mónica. Oraba constantemente para que él y su marido pudieran algún día unirse a ella en adoración. Finalmente, su fe y su bondad fueron parcialmente recompensados: su marido y su suegra se convirtieron al cristianismo. Pero el hijo de Sta. Mónica, Agustín parecía sin esperanzas. Aunque ella era un buen ejemplo para él, e hizo todo lo que estuvo a su alcance para darle un buen ejemplo y asegurarse que su hijo creciera como un hombre bueno y decente, simplemente no podía hacer que se comportara Cristianamente o entendiera la importancia de una conducta apropiada. Huyó de la escuela, regresó a casa e insultaba a Sta. Mónica. Ella lo corrió de su casa, pero lo recibió de nuevo cuando una voz le dijo, "tu hijo está con contigo," lo que elle pensó que quería decir en la fe. Tuvo una amante, con la que tuvo un hijo, e ignoró las protestas de su madre. Pero, Sta. Mónica no se dio por vencida. Se dio cuenta de que no podía hacer nada por si sola y no tuvo temor de pedir ayuda, aunque esto le causara vergüenza. Sta. Mónica pidió la ayuda de su Obispo local, que la animó. "No es posible que el hijo de muchas lágrimas se pierda," le dijo. Eventualmente, Sta. Mónica regresó al Obispo Ambrosio en Italia, quien llevó a Agustín a Dios apelando a su inteligencia en lugar de sus emociones. Finalmente, la meta de Sta. Mónica aconteció, incluso en maneras inesperadas. Su hijo se convirtió a la fe fuertemente y finalmente fue canonizado – como San Agustín, uno de los más grandes maestros y filósofos de la Iglesia.

TIEMPO DE COMPROMISO: Los Cub Scouts se reúnen los miércoles por la tarde, y los Boy Scouts los lunes por la tarde, típicamente salen de campamento un fin de semana al mes. Hay diferentes papeles para los voluntarios con diferentes tiempos de compromiso. CÓMO ESTE MINISTERIO HACE LA DIFERENCIA: Los scouts y voluntarios en Sta. Mónica no solo donan su tiempo a la parroquia y a la escuela sino también a la comunidad a través de su trabajo en San Vicente de Paul, ayudando con el jardín y recogiendo basura en el Día de Limpieza de nuestra parroquia, limpiando la Iglesia, y como voluntarios en el festival de Sta. Mónica. CÓMO PUEDE USTED AYUDAR: Muchos voluntarios donan su tiempo para que los scouts se involucren en un programa de calidad. Los consejeros de insignia de mérito ayudan a los scouts a aprender más sobre las vocaciones y pasatiempos. Los voluntarios sirven detrás de las escenas en los comités y en los papeles de liderazgo. Los voluntarios también capacitan a estos líderes y ofrecen un servicio continuo a las tropas de nuestros Cub Scout y Boy Scout. Siempre se necesitan más voluntarios para servir como líderes o compartir sus habilidades especiales con los jóvenes y adultos. Clases de Preparación para la Confirmación para Adultos La preparación para la Confirmación para adultos empezará el domingo 22 de febrero. Las Confirmaciones serán en la Catedral San Pedro y San Pablo el 31 de Mayo. Este es un programa corto para la preparación de la Confirmación y es para adultos y jóvenes quienes han tenido 8 años de educación religiosa en la Iglesia Católica, que asisten a la Misa semanalmente, y que se encuentran en buen estado con la Iglesia. La preparación consiste en 6 sesiones y un retiro, más una reunión después de la Confirmación. Las sesionesson de 4:30 - 6:00 pm los domingos. El padrino de confirmación de cada candidato debe asistir por lo menos a 4 de las 6 sesiones, más el retiro. Se requiere el 100% de asistencia para este corto programa. Viaje a Nuestra Parroquia Hermana 2015 La planeación para la misión a Honduras 2015 ha empezado, ¡y nos gustaría que viniera a este viaje! Aunque proveemos servicios medicales, no es necesario que tiene habilidades medícales ni que hable ingles. Si está interesado en ir al viaje anual, tiene que asistir a una de las reuniones de información. Las reuniones de información son los domingos, 22 de febrero y 8 de marzo. Todas las reuniones son a las 2:30pm en el salón de San Augustine.

Todd Goodson was recognized Jan. 27 at Ss. Peter and Paul Cathedral as the 2015 Distinguished Pastor for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. The Distinguished Pastor Award honors pastors who have given outstanding support to Catholic elementary education, give spiritual guidance to the school community, and receive high recommendations from school faculty, school board, and parents. Students created this cross canvas made up of each student’s fingerprint, and is displayed in the Parish Office. El párroco de Sta. Mónica P. Todd Goodson fue reconocido el martes, 27 de enero en la Catedral San Pedro y San Pablo como el Párroco distinguido de la Arquidiócesis de Indianápolis del 2015. El Premio de Párroco Distinguido honra a los párrocos quienes han tenido un excepcional apoyo en la educación primaria Católica, dan guía espiritual a la comunidad de la escuela, y reciben buenas recomendaciones de la facultad de la escuela, la junta escolar, y los padres.
