Introduction TSW began their internship at the Chaitanya Institute for Mental Health. It was a great opportunity to do an internship at Chaitanya Institute for Mental Health, Pune. The Chaitanya Institute for Mental Health was founded to provide acute management and community-based psychosocial rehabilitation for those who suffer from mental illness. It is one of the top residential psychiatric care facilities in western India. At the moment, Chaitanya offers residential care facilities for patients with a variety of mental conditions, including schizophrenia, mood disorders, personality disorders, substance use disorders, and geriatric conditions. Internship conducted as a part of a Fourth semester MSW programme was completed in from Chaitanya Institute for Mental Health, Pune 21/11/2022 to 20/12/2022. Agency profile Chaitanya Institute for Mental Health is one of the leading Residential psychiatric care centers in Maharashtra; the Western part of India, established for the acute management and community based psycho-social rehabilitation of the mentally ill. Currently they provide residential care treatment facilities for patients suffering from various psychiatric disorders. Chaitanya have branches in Maharashtra, Goa and Kerala providing residential care treatment and facilities for more than 450 residents. Mission We affirm the value of human life, regardless of age, race, ability or disability; we believe in a compassionate care towards the physical and mental wellbeing of individuals in a therapeutic relationship of trust. Our mission is to guide and help individuals achieve resilience and positive sense of self esteem to cope with life’s inevitable challenges. With professional


expertise and scheduled weakness programs designed by experts, every individual is equipped with the confidence to lead a meaningful life. Orientation Mr. Anto Augustine, Coordinator, Chaitanya IMH, provided a session of orientation for the trainees. He provided a brief overview of the facility, its organizational structure, the services offered there, and a session on psychiatry. Personal Hygiene Supervision TSW had to supervise the personal hygiene of Matruchaya residents and female rehab residents. The trainee was responsible for supervising the residents from 6:45 a.m. to 8 a.m. The trainee also had to participate in the exercise sessions. Yoga Session Trainee assisted the counsellors in yoga sessions to make sure the residents are participating and performing in the yoga class. Therapeutic Community Meeting TCM stands therapeutic community meeting which include breathing exercise, prayer, daily routine. Morning thought, newspaper reading, news memorizing and topic discussion. Community Meeting TSW participated in the community meeting. The community meeting is for assigning duties and responsibilities to the residents. Group Therapy Group therapy was conducted on the basis of the topic. The topic had an objective and intervention to enhance the ability of residents. Art Therapy Art therapy mainly focusing to express the hidden emotions of the residents. The art therapy also based on a topic to express their emotions Reminisce Therapy The aim of the therapy is to improve the memory of the residents. Recreation Therapy Recreational therapy can aid in skill recovery, mood enhancement, quality of life enhancement, and social connection strengthening.


Reflection Therapy Therapy was conducted among the de addiction unit. The reflection therapy discusses the writings of reflection book from Alcoholic Anonymous group. Skill Development Programme The programme was conducted to develop the skills of the residents. It encourages and cheer the inmates to participate in the games. It will organize once in a month. Insight orientation aversion Therapy In the Addiction Floor, the trainee attended to insight orientation therapy. By forcing him to discuss his personal experiences, the therapists and other residents can assess the resident's error and help him gain insight. The goal of therapy is to help the resident gain understanding of his addiction Session on MMSE The session was given by Ms. Blessy Team leader of Matruchaya. It was a very fruitful session for the TSW. Session on MSE The session led by Dr. Sapna Shaikh, Psychiatrist gave a detailed information about the MSE. Case history and MSE TSW take 10 case history and 1 MSE from different units of CIMH. Through the case history taking is very helpful to the TSW to understand the disorders. MMSE TSW collect 1 MMSE from the Piturchaya dementia patient. Case presentation TSW presented the case history and MSE. Evaluation The evaluation session was led by the coordinator, Mr. Anto. The case presentations are presented at the evaluation. The evaluation is from 4.45 p.m. to 5.30 p.m Medicine Duty Trainee assisted in medicine dispensing with the counsellors of pithurchaaya. Trainee also supervised the dinner of pithurchaaya residents.


Night Duty At 5:30 in the evening, the night shift begins. In addition to helping with medication distribution and supervising the food distribution, the trainee was responsible for locking the floor and making sure all of the residents were eating. Observation ▪ Authority was cooperative to the TSW. ▪ There are Psychiatric Rehabilitation care unit, Deaddiction unit, Geriatric and Dementia Care unit and Vocational Training and Day care Centre. ▪ The units included a Team leader, counsellor, care taker, supporting staff and Mauchies ▪ There are active and passive groups in the units ▪ The group activities are beneficial to the residents as it discusses important news, memorizing and discussion on new topics. ▪ Therapies improve the skills and mental health of the residents. ▪ The counsellors properly follow the duties in the units ▪ The residents are cooperative with the TSW for all the activities in the unit. ▪ Trainees observed that the majority of the inmates are highly educated and worked in high profile jobs. ▪ Observed the insight orientation psychotherapy, Reflection therapy


and role play in DE addiction floor. ▪ Through the supervision in the morning session help the TSW to identify the mood swings of the Residents Learning :Personal Learning. ▪ Learned the significance of therapies among the residents. ▪ Learned to apply the therapies. ▪ Learned to interact with the residents in the units TSW learned about the institution and its activities. ▪ Learned the role of social workers. ▪ Learned problems of residents in different units. ➢ Professional Learning ▪ Learned different disorders from the units such as Schizophrenia, Personality Disorders, Geriatric Disorders, Mood Disorders and Substance Related disorders. Learned the differences between psychosis and Neurosis ▪ Learned the services provided in individual level, Family level and community level. ▪ Learned different psychiatric terminologies. ▪ Learned the types of injections IV, IM and Depot Injections


▪ Learned the medical terms used in the medicine distribution O.D, B.D, T.D.S, H.S. ▪ Learned to take Case history, MMSE and MSE. ▪ MMSE is taken for the residents who have dementia. ▪ Group activities are helpful for the inmates to sustain their cognitive abilities, gain knowledge and help in improving their communication. ▪ Standard food calorie of 2500 calories are provided in the institution. They mostly include pulses, protein rich food, wheat and vegetables are the main food items. ▪ Learned the therapies such as Art therapy, Group therapy, Reminisce therapy and Aversion therapy Theory Application ▪ System Theory ▪ Therapy ▪ Behaviour Modification Techniques ▪ Unconditional positive Regard ▪ Rapport Build ▪ Principle of acceptance ▪ Case history, MSE and MMSE

The field work was very effective to the TSW. TSW work different units in the CIMH. It helps to identify different disorders and applied therapies to the residents. TSW got the opportunity to take Case history, MSE, MMSE and therapies. There is a good team is working in the CIMH. Conclusion The Internship at Chaitanya Institute for Mental Health was a good experience. TSW was able to understand various departments and their activities. TSW got an opportunity to study various disorders with different cases. There is proper guidance received by the staffs in the organizations. TSW got many new experiences and learnings from this period of internship
