What is Technical Communication?

W

hen considering English as a major, you may think of literature or creative writing. However, UCF’s English program offers much more than that.. Technical communication is an English track at UCF with ample opportunities that not many people understand or know of. It is the program where you can learn more about the spoken, written, and visual communication used in business and scientific communities. It is a great field for anyone who wants to master the power of language, engage in critical thought, and apply these techniques into document/web designs, editing and publishing, and technical writing. Learning the skills of technical communication is valuable regardless of the career you hope to pursue.

UCF’s English Department also has: Future Technical Communicators (FTC) Club College Work Experience Program (CWEP) Internships & Experienced Professors, etc.

These resources are to help you progress further in your career in Technical Communication while you are still studying. Information about the opportunities listed above can be found in the proceeding pages of this booklet.

Technical Communication Clubs @ UCF UCF has two major clubs dedicated to Technical Communication: Future Technical Communicators (FTC) and Sigma Tau Delta.

Future Technical Communicators (FTC) FTC is a club where students collaborate on projects to add to their portfolio such as magazines, articles, brochures, and websites. They feature a mentorship program that pairs students with professionals who help them find jobs, improve their skills, coauthor publications, and develop new projects. FTC is connected with the Society for Technical Communicators, a prestigious national organization that connects students with professionals and offers certificates and scholarships. Every semester, STC holds meetings on campus and on Zoom to discuss workplace culture, available tools to students, and more. The club also hosts social events where you can meet like minded students and network with one another.

Sigma Tau Delta Sigma Tau Delta is an international honors society dedicated to providing academic help to students majoring or minoring in English. This honors society recognizes the achievements of outstanding students of English and promotes appreciation of English language and literature! This society awards scholarships, fellowships, and grants to individual students and academic groups. It also provides internships for graduates and undergraduates and rewards students for community service. They also host an annual convention for members to recognize individuals for their achievements and to network. It can give prospective students professional experience and provides career advice to those who are looking for help on what the next step is in their profession.

Internships

W

ith an internship, students are given a first-hand look into an industry, exposure to potential employers, and an expanded skillset. These will help set you up for a successful career after graduation.

The types of internships that exist within technical communication may vary. Some are technical editing, copywriting, grant writing, show writing, content producing/writing, and digital marketing. Within these internships, you will perfect the skills required of a technical communicator and practice other applicable skills that can only be learned through real-life. The technical communications program is filled with resources that can make for a swift search for internships. The table shown on page 4 is comprised of a brief list of companies and positions previously or currently open for students at UCF.
