If damaged: (from TBI, stroke, tumor) = changes in personality, impaired movement, language expression (e.g., Broca’s Aphasia), mood swings, difficulty problem solving
• • • • • • • • •
Personality Planning Abstract thinking Problem solving Emotion regulation Behavior Making decisions Language Memory
*To remember temporal lobe being associated with hearing + attention + memory think about paying attention to the tempo of a song and recalling the lyrics*
•
• • •
•
Memory (encoding, storage + retrieval of memories) o Left Temporal Lobe = verbal memory and language comprehension o Right Temporal Lobe = visual memory Emotion Hearing Attention If damaged: (from TBI, stroke, encephalitis) = auditory agnosia (inability to recognize familiar sounds), auditory hallucinations, impaired memory (declarative → facts, names, dates), impaired language comprehension (e.g., Wernicke’s Aphasia), aggression
*To remember parietal lobe being associated with pain/sensation, think about how painful the sensation would be if a parrot bit you*
I AM AN EPPP BRAINIAC!!! |2 •
Sensations related to touch and pain, temperature and proprioception (ability to sense position, location and movement of the body) o Right Parietal Lobe = attention, coordinating visual/spatial skills o Left Parietal Lobe = motor/language routines If damaged: (from stroke) = impaired hand-eye coordination, anomia (inability to name objects), agraphia (inability to write), alexia (problems with reading), acalculia (difficulty doing math), ideomotor apraxia (can’t perform a motor task on command), ideational apraxia (unable to plan/execute a task that requires a sequence of actions/directions → usually this is damage to the LEFT), tactile agnosia (inability to recognize familiar items by touch), Gerstmann’s Syndrome (specifically damage in the LEFT Parietal Lobe) = agraphia, acalculia, left/right confusion, contralateral neglect - aka – unilateral neglect – aka – hemispatial neglect → damage to the RIGHT side (neglect 1 side of your body opposite to the side the stroke happened on)
•
Vision, colors, shapes, visual memory
If damaged: (from stoke, tumor) = difficulty: reading/writing, difficulty recognizing drawn objects, identifying colors due to lack of color vision (achromatopsia), hallucinations, inability to recognize words (word blindness), prosopagnosia – damage due to bilateral lesion to the occipitotemporal junction impairing the person’s ability to recognize familiar faces/animals, visual agnosia (inability to recognize familiar objects by sight)
• • • •
•
• •
Balance/posture Coordination Movement (especially voluntary movement) Procedural Memory (how we remember to do things, like riding a bike, typing, make a sandwich, signing our name) Implicit Memory (how we remember to things that are more automatic for us, such as we don’t have to think about flipping on a light switch in a dark room, putting on our seat belt when we get into a car) Attention If damaged: Ataxia – display behaviors as if a person is drunk; slurred speech, tremors, nystagmus (jerky eye movements)
To remember occipital lobe is associated with vision + color – think about the word optic (i.e., how something looks) and how you would be able to see how white your teeth get with this optic toothpaste

CEREBELLUM (continued from above) •
•
Proprioception: awareness of the position and movement of the body in your environment Cognitive Functions: attention, language processing and visuospatial
If damaged/abnormal: ataxia → impaired movement, balance, coordination, slurred speech, nystagmus (jerky eye movement), ADHD, ASD, difficulty learning new skills/performing previously learned skills
MEDULLA OBLONGATA • •
Movement (mouth, throat → swallowing, coughing, sneezing)
