Entering Through the Narrow Door Homily Reflection Perhaps because we have heard it on so many Sundays, the message of Jesus that following him requires carrying the cross and striving “to enter through the narrow door,” we may not listen what this really means to us in our daily life; and, by not considering it, we do not understand well our commitment. To enter the narrow door does not mean we have to suffer for the sake of suffering; nor does should we try to make things more difficult than they already are. To enter the narrow door seems to rather indicate that we must do things right, not only when they are easier, but always. That may mean not to cheat in a game, not deceive in any way our spouse or boss at work, not take advantage of the weakness of others for our benefit, tell the truth always, defend the weakest, and avoid all forms of selfishness. To do all these things, which may seem like a sacrifice, paradoxically opens the doors to freedom; in other words, when we are not tied to our own interests, comfort, and welfare, instead we look toward a common wellbeing, integrity, justice, and a relationship with the living Christ by doing all that pleases him, then we are truly free from all the forces of death and sin. It is then that we will have accepted God’s salvation in our lives. No one seeks suffering for oneself, unless the person has a serious disorder that is called masochism; in fact, we try to lee from pain as much as suffering. We come from many generations of Christians and could think that we have a right to salvation for the simple reason that our grandparents and greatgrandparents were Christians. Jesus tells us today that our salvation depends on our personal effort and we cannot sit idly; but above all, he tells us that we cannot exclude anyone from salvation. This is very important. In salvation all, who are brothers and sisters, enter; and that means everyone, since it is Jesus’ fundamental message to tell us that we are children of God. To the extent that we exclude someone, we are excluding ourselves. It is not that God is closing the gate to heaven; it is that we cannot go through it alone. We close it ourselves when we refuse to be brothers and sisters to all. For Reflection In which moments do I feel called “to enter through the narrow door,” in other words to not do what feels more comfortable or selfish, but what is best for the common wellbeing?

Entrar por la puerta estrecha Reflexiones para la homilía A fuerza de tanto oír en muchos domingos el mensaje de Jesús, de que seguirle conlleva cargar con la cruz y “entrar por la puerta estrecha”, podríamos no escuchar lo que eso significa para nosotros en nuestra vida diaria; y, al no considerarlo, quizá no estemos entendiendo bien nuestro compromiso. El entrar por la puerta estrecha no significa que haya que buscar el sufrimiento por el sufrimiento; ni tampoco que tratemos de hacer las cosas más difíciles de lo que son. El entrar por la puerta estrecha parece más bien indicar que hay que hacer las cosas bien, no solo cuando resulten más fáciles, sino siempre. eso puede querer decir no hacer trampas en un juego o no engañar de ninguna manera a nuestro cónyuge o a nuestro jefe del trabajo, no tratar de aprovechar la debilidad de otros para sacar provecho, decir la verdad siempre, defender al más débil, evitar el egoísmo en todas sus formas. Hacer todas esas cosas, que parecen sacrificadas, paradójicamente nos abre las puertas de la liberación; es decir, cuando no estamos atados a nuestros propios intereses, nuestra comodidad, nuestro provecho, sino que miramos más allá al bien común, a la integridad, a la justicia y a una relación con el Cristo vivo haciendo todo lo que le agrada, entonces somos verdaderamente libres de todas las fuerzas de la muerte y el pecado. Es entonces cuando habremos aceptado la salvación de Dios en nuestras vidas. Nadie busca el sufrimiento por sí mismo, a no ser que se tenga un grave trastorno que se llama masoquismo; es más, tratamos de huir del dolor todo lo que podemos. Nosotros venimos de muchas generaciones de cristianos y podríamos pensar que tenemos derecho a la salvación por la sencilla razón de que ya nuestros abuelos y tatarabuelos eran cristianos. Jesús nos dice hoy que nuestra salvación depende de nuestro esfuerzo personal, que no podemos quedarnos sentados sin hacer nada; pero, sobre todo, nos dice que no podemos excluir a nadie de la salvación; esto es muy importante. En la salvación entran todos los que somos hermanos; y eso quiere decir todos, ya que es el mensaje fundamental de Jesús decirnos que somos hijos de Dios. En la medida que excluyamos a alguien, nos excluimos a nosotros mismos. No es que Dios nos cierre la puerta del cielo; es que no podemos pasar solos. La puerta la cerramos nosotros mismos cuando nos negamos a ser hermanos de todos. Para la reflexión ¿En qué momentos siento la llamada a “entrar por la puerta estrecha”, es decir, a no a hacer lo que me resulta más cómodo y egoísta, sino lo que es mejor para el bien común?
