Shining Light Creating Hope Changing Lives
familiesagainstnarcotics.org
Families Against Narcotics (FAN) was born in the basement of a small church in Fraser, Michigan in 2007, when a group of passionate people came together in response to the heroin overdose deaths of two young people from the community. People were shocked and heartbroken, and wanted to do everything they could to help prevent another tragedy. At the time, though, very few of them realized the community was facing a serious health crisis caused by the over-prescribing of opioid pain medications. What started as one small group in Macomb County has now grown into an organization with more than 20 chapters across Michigan. FAN’s mission is To compassionately assist individuals and families who have been affected by substance use disorder and cultivate healthy communities that view addiction as a disease and treat those who suffer from it with respect and compassion.
FAN has made great strides, launching free programs that touch every part of a recovery journey. Even so, there is much more for FAN to do. Until people affected by this insidious family disease are given the same access to treatment that a cancer patient or diabetic receives, we cannot and will not stop.

HARM:LESS is a harm-reduction initiative focusing on reducing the negative consequences associated with drug use and, first and foremost, saving lives. The HARM:LESS team meets people where they are at and establishes a trustworthy relationship with people who use drugs (PWUD). They provide these individuals with the supplies they might need to safely use substances, which effectively lessens the risks associated with people sharing supplies.
The HARM:LESS team goes out to the streets three days a week, for four hours each day. They interact with individuals and let them know that they still matter, even though they may be using drugs. In addition to sterile safe-use supplies, the team also distributes naloxone, fentanyl test kits, and—when possible—food and clothing. If a person wants to go to treatment for their substance use disorder, HARM:LESS can make arrangements on-site to place them. If, however, treatment is not desired, the team will keep the individual safe while they are still using.
