From the Mayor Project READY GUNNER ONE – so I was virtually firing a machine gun! Guests were also treated to a traditional sunset ceremony with music from the RAF Honington Voluntary Band, before the Ensign Lowering ceremony concluded the evening.

O

ne of my many highlights as Mayor of Felixstowe was a visit to RAF Honington to celebrate their 85th year of the station. An invitation back in July to the Annual Formal Reception where I was delighted to be joined by my middle sister, Kerry. I took the opportunity to try the latest virtual technology, helping to train the next generation RAF. It is a close combat training system as part of

What was particularly special about this event were the links between Felixstowe, my family and the RAF. Felixstowe has a long and proud connection with the RAF. In fact the RAF Station, which was situated in the vicinity of the current Port of Felixstowe, was one of the very first in Great Britain. RAF Felixstowe was also home to the world champion Schneider Trophy Flying Boat unit. The freedom of the town was granted to the RAF following their heroic assistance during the devastating 1953 floods. The ceremonial certificate is kept at RAF Honington and they had it proudly on display for our arrival. The Mayor’s chain of office features the RAF jewel presented to the town by the RAF, and is thought to be the only chain in the world that includes the RAF insignia. The RAF Station closed in the 1960.

My grandfather, Leonard Charles Tuesley (pictured) joined the RAF when he was 18, he served in Arden (now part of Yemen) and had various postings including Plymouth and RAF Calshot, Southampton and two tours of Cyprus. Grandad was a Flight Sergeant in the marine craft unit of RAF Sea Rescue. He was a coxswain on the rescue boats. Whilst my grandad was stationed in Cyprus with his wife and three children (one being my mum), my father was also stationed there. My dad joined the RAF when he was 19 - he was a paramedic nurse -carrying out rescues in the Troodos Mountains. We have great photos of him parachuting or in a canoe! The RAF continues in our family blood with aunts, uncles and cousins all being connected in some fashion. My younger sister, Tina was in the RAF too as a policewoman and dog handler. She was also part of the support aircrew for Puma helicopters. This autumn marks the 65th anniversary of The Freedom of Entry to the Town – I shall hand over the baton to the incoming Mayor to mark the occasion.

In the meantime there are still opportunities to support the Mayor’s Charities – April 11th Quiz night at The Mariners, April 21st Let’s Rock Felixstowe Harmonies at Trimley Sports and Social Club and April 28th the Mayor’s Spring Ball. Tracy Laudat Acrylic Artist

Local Artist Tracy Laudat invites you to her upcoming art exhibition “Go with the Flow” at Gallery 142, Hamilton Road, Felixstowe from April 20th – 26th. Tracy explores colour and movement by layering and manipulating fluid paints along with hand painted embellishment detail. “When the first Covid lockdown happened, I needed to find a creative, therapeutic outlet. I discovered fluid art and began studying and experimenting. Through the bumpy journey I developed my techniques and began selling my work. My artistic journey is in its infancy compared to many, yet here I am 3 years later so excited, so grateful and not quite believing I am having my first exhibition”.

any other category of people: it is usually false and unfair. Of course we Catholics sometimes suffer in a similar way! Say ‘Catholic’ and many people think ‘bigoted, blinkered, obscurantist, guilt and gloom laden, avoid’. (When I was a little boy my Protestant parents actually told me that Roman Catholics didn’t wash!). Like prisoners, and maybe many other categories of people, we Catholics are used to being branded!

Canon John Barnes Say ‘prisoners’ and many people think ‘bad, dangerous, aggressive, violent, avoid’. Recently, I’ve started saying a Saturday morning Mass at one of our local prisons, and I get a very different picture. The prisoners I meet are friendly, welcoming, and a pleasure to be with. Some are keen on music, books, and are easy to talk to. Their families and their home places are very special to them. It is quite wrong to ‘brand’ prisoners or

The truth is, of course, that we should never put labels on any group of people; it’s often false and always misleading. Under those labels we are all people, with our own individual gifts and personalities. Each one of us is special, made and loved by God, and gifted by him in innumerable different ways. Each of us has our good points and our not-sogood points. We should forget the categories and celebrate the individuals. I think that is what God does, and what he wants us to do. Canon John Barnes

Myths of Equity Release Myth 1: You no longer own your own home False. A Lifetime Mortgage does not affect the ownership of your property. You will remain the owner of your property, with the debt being repayable when you pass away or move out of your home into long term care. Subject to the provider’s criteria you are also free to move. Myth 2: You can end up owing more than the value of your home False. All plans from lenders approved by the Equity Release Council feature a ‘No Negative Equity Guarantee’, which means that you or your heirs will never owe more than the value of your property. Should your property at the end of the plan be worth less than the amount borrowed, the remaining balance gets written off. Myth 3: You can’t release equity from your home if you have an outstanding mortgage False. In fact, repaying an existing mortgage is one of the most popular uses of a Lifetime

9 Free Advice 9 Local Branches or Home Visits available 9 No monthly repayments needed Mortgage, with the remainder of the tax-free cash you release yours to spend entirely as you wish! Myth 4: You must make monthly repayments False. You don’t have to make any repayments and the interest is simply added to the total amount outstanding. However, many Lifetime Mortgages products allow you to repay a percentage of the total balance each year penalty-free. Lifetime Mortgage products have changed and could significantly, and securely, boost your later life finances. Why not find out today how much tax-free cash you could release from your property?

Thank you to the Mayor of Felixstowe, Cllr Sharon Harkin for inviting me to help raise the Ukrainian flag and to lay a wreath outside the town hall last month to mark the first anniversary of Putin’s appalling invasion. It was my privilege to meet representatives from Ukraine 2 Felixstowe and hear the stories of their guests. The UK has stood shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine from the very outset and we’ll continue to provide the vital resources they need. The sooner Russia is made to end the conflict and these inspirational families get a chance to return to their homeland the better. In the meantime, I know they will continue to receive a warm welcome here in Felixstowe. The UK will always be a compassionate country and whilst we promote safe and legal routes for genuine refugees fleeing war, such as those from Ukraine and Afghanistan, it’s also vital we crack down on the people smugglers and stop the boats in the channel. Last month, the government introduced the Illegal Migration Bill, which is designed to ensure that if you come to the UK illegally you will

be detained, deported and denied the opportunity to ever re-enter the country again. This is how we will break the business model of the people smugglers and take back control of our borders. Instead of dangerous crossings, under this Bill, Parliament will set an annual cap on the number of refugees settled via safe and legal routes. Finally, as we edge towards the local elections next month, I wanted to remind readers of the need to show photographic ID at the polling station before you receive your ballot paper. This is a new measure to reduce and prevent voter fraud. You can use various forms of ID, including a driving licence, passport, Older Person’s Bus Pass, a blue badge or Disabled Person’s Bus Pass. For more information on which forms of photo ID will be accepted, visit electoralcommission.org. uk/voterID or call their helpline on 0800 328 0280. Anyone who doesn’t have an accepted form of identification can now apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) at https://voter-authoritycertificate.service.gov.uk/. Don’t lose your vote.

what it is like to be a child in our schools. Inspectors will spend much more time talking to children and exploring our curriculum. The focus also is much wider - looking at what we teach in all subjects rather than just a narrow focus on reading, writing and maths.

Mr Girling Headteacher We have recently successfully ‘navigated’ Ofsted inspections at both of our schools. Whilst they are rightfully robust and thorough processes, I am pleased that the current inspection framework puts less emphasis on data outcomes and more on truly finding out

We are very proud of our curriculum at Fairfield and Colneis and at the opportunities our children get. Music provision is a great example of this. Not only do children get high quality music lessons each week, but there are also many opportunities for them to extend and develop these skills beyond the curriculum. Our younger children get to sing together in our ‘Melody Maker’ club and older children have the opportunity to learn instruments if they wish. Our violin and guitar lessons are well received and they always enjoy performing at the end of each term to parents and the rest of the school. Earlier in the term we were also delighted to be able

to take some of our Year 5 and 6 children to the ‘Young Voices’ event at the O2 in London where they formed part of the largest school choir in the world. Music is such an important part of our wider curriculum offer - it gives children a chance to perform and succeed in ways they might not be able to do in other subjects. Felixstowe Art Group

Following on from last month’s news, by the time you read this article, sadly Felixstowe Art Group’s Bent Hill Gallery will be closed due to the property being up for sale shortly. Various avenues continue to be explored in the quest to find alternative affordable premises so we can continue to showcase and sell members work. Along with the Group’s website the gallery was an excellent point of contact for enquiries about the Group. Members consist of total beginners to professional artists and all are welcome. Various activities such as Tuesday evening demonstrations, presentations and workshops are just one of the benefits of membership. Another advantage of membership

Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm – Public Consultation The Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm is the proposed extension to the operational Galloper Offshore Wind Farm. The wind farm would have up to 79 turbines across two areas of the southern North Sea. At its closest point to shore, the wind farm will be located 37km off the coast of Suffolk. Subsea cables will connect the Project to shore between Frintonon-Sea and Holland-on-Sea in Essex. Underground cables and a new onshore substation near Little Bromley would then connect the Project to the national electricity transmission network. From 14 March to 12 May 2023 we are consulting on our proposals, and we would like to hear your views on the Project. You can find out more about the Project at www.fiveestuaries.co.uk or join us at one of the public events below.

It’s more than just eggs!

Jill Mayes Easter – chocolate, more chocolate and more expense. It’s great to see signs of Spring, new life, flowers, and, we hope, better weather. For me, Easter is a reminder about freedom, about new beginnings, and about hope for the future. These things are so important to me because when I was younger, I was a mess. I needed approval from other people to feel good. I let myself be used, in all kinds of ways, because then I’d be loved, yes? What a joke! If anything, I felt worse about myself – worthless, even.

I sank into depression and anxiety and struggled to cope with everyday things.

Finally, I had to learn how to manage on my own, after the support stopped.

Although the cause was different, the symptoms of struggling, feeling depressed and not knowing where to turn, struggling every day – not being able to go out of the house, are like those often felt by people in debt.

It struck me that Christians Against Poverty follow a similar path.

I was fortunate – I got help from my GP who referred me to a local Mental Health Nurse. I learned how to manage my symptoms, I got medication (I still take a low maintenance dose) and, over time, things improved. I truly believe that things can improve for anyone, in any circumstance, with the right help and support. First, I had to recognise my own problem. Second, I had to be brave and ask for help – that was the hardest part for me. Third, I had to take the help that was offered and work with the team – I had to make an effort, play my part.

When people realise they need help with debt, they call our freephone 0800 328 0006 and ask for help. Then they work with us for as long as it takes, while learning how to manage longer term. We believe everyone deserves hope and a fresh start – why not begin a journey to freedom today?

Saving and Investment Basics No. 14 – What are Social Impact Investments? of avoiding businesses which have a sole focus on profit, but rather consider their impact on the environment, on people and on society. This was an initiative formed by David Cameron’s government and initiated through Big Society Capital However, some investors are wanting to do more than that. This is a more recent development and therefore, it should be noted, is likely to carry with it increased risk and reduced liquidity of investments.

APRIL 202 3

Known as ‘Social Impact Investing’ there is now an option to invest in Charities or their trading arms to allow them the use of funds to address an issue in society. Qualifying investments benefit from generous Social Investment

Tax Relief of 30%, but again, it’s worth reiterating that this is because of the increased risk associated with investing in Charitable businesses or Community Interest Companies. Examples of Social Impact Investments over the last few years include the provision of Social Housing, working with ex-offenders to start new businesses or helping charities create employment opportunities through the creation of Social Enterprises. Usually, the investment is by way of a loan with a specified interest rate payable, either from the outset, or when a specified business objective has been achieved. Typically, these investment opportunities would be appropriate for investors who have

the capacity to fund their lifestyle from other investments so that these funds would not be critical to their standard of living. We also find that these are suited to those who have an interest in impacting their community or society as a whole. L

ocal Government Elections for Felixstowe Town Council, East Suffolk Council (District) and, because of the untimely death of Councillor Graham Newman, a by election for the Suffolk County Council’s Felixstowe Coastal Division will all take place on the 4 May. These councils between them control many services which impact on the quality of all our lives. Planning, Leisure, Waste Management, Environmental issues, Highways and Welfare for example.

Kimberley Williams

The Felixstowe Labour Party will be contesting seats across Felixstowe, we urge you to use your vote and use it wisely. This will be the first election that a photo ID will be required for you to vote in person at a Polling Station. Photo ID could be in the form of a UK Passport, UK Driving Licence, a Blue Badge, Older Persons’ Bus Pass, Disabled Persons’ Bus Pass, to name just a few. If you have none of these options you can apply to East Suffolk Council for a free Photo ID.

At the last Town Council meeting our own Councillor Kimberley Williams announced that, because of business pressures, she will be standing down from the Council at the May elections. She was first elected to the Town and District Councils representing North Felixstowe and latterly the Walton Ward twelve years ago and served on the Planning Committees of both of those Councils. She soon became very proficient in Planning Policies. She opposed tirelessly the plans to develop the volume of housing proposed for Felixstowe and the subsequent destruction of our countryside, agricultural land effecting our food security and the impact of the developments on our local infrastructure. She was also Vice Chair of the Town Council’s Personnel Committee. Her contributions at Council

were always well researched and articulate. Councillor Williams was an excellent constituency councillor and will be sadly missed. How wise was the Planning Committee at East Suffolk Council to reject the Council’s planning application to site some of the displaced Spa Pavilion beach huts at the South end of the resort? This was rejected largely based on the history of flooding and damage to the existing huts on that site. This decision was exonerated when in March during a very high Spring tide many of the huts at the South end of the promenade were once again damaged, some badly, when the sea overtopped the promenade. This will be our last article before the elections, may we take this opportunity to thank you all for your continuing support Councillor Mike Deacon, 01394 211146, 07971 563621 Councillor Margaret Morris, 01394 274345 Councillor Kimberley Williams, 07814 499375

The Achievement of Arms

T

he Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III will take place on the 6th May 2023, in Westminster Abbey. To celebrate this the Suffolk Heraldry Society is curating an exhibition of Royal Heraldry, which will be on display in Bury St Edmunds Cathedral between 2nd and 16th May. It will offer an opportunity to view Royal heritage through an art form which also encompasses science, history and genealogy At all times and in all parts of the world people have used symbols to focus ideas and sentiment, and express them in visual form. By the 12th century in England such personal distinguishing marks had become consistently hereditary. The Royal Coat of Arms (shield) and Crest of England date from the reign of our first Plantagenet King, Richard I the Lionheart (1157-1199). Modern heraldry dates from this time. The illustration shown here is the full armorial bearings – The Achievement of Arms, for His Majesty King Charles III. Occupying the key central position the Coat of Arms shows a “marriage” of countries rather than that of individuals. England is represented in the 1st and 4th quarters, Scotland in the 2nd and Ireland in the 3rd

quarter. Notice how stems of roses (England), thistles (Scotland) and shamrock (Ireland) decorate beneath. Surrounding the Coat of Arms is the symbol for the Most Noble Order of the Garter, founded by Kind Edward III in 1348, it continues today to

Place them in a roasting tin with some hot oil and cook in the oven for 45-50 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are golden and crispy.

Once you've selected your lamb, it's time to prepare it for cooking. Preheat your oven to 220°C/425°F/ gas mark 7. Take your lamb and make several deep cuts into the flesh, then rub in a mixture of garlic, rosemary, and olive oil. Season generously with salt and black pepper, then place the lamb in a roasting tin.

E

aster is a time for celebration and what better way to celebrate than with a delicious roast lamb dinner. Roast lamb is a classic Easter dish and is the perfect centrepiece for any family gathering. Cooking the perfect Easter roast lamb with all the trimmings may seem daunting, but with a few simple steps, you can

create a delicious meal that will be enjoyed by all. Firstly, it's important to choose the right cut of lamb. A leg of lamb from a local butcher is a popular choice for Easter, as it's easy to carve and has a delicious flavour. When selecting your lamb, look for meat that is a deep pink colour and has a

Roasting times will vary depending on the weight of the lamb, but a general rule of thumb is to cook the lamb for 20 minutes per 450g/1lb of meat. Once the lamb has been cooking for 30 minutes, reduce the oven temperature to 180°C/350°F/ gas mark 4 and continue to cook for the remaining time. Baste the lamb occasionally with the juices that have collected in the bottom of the roasting tin, as this will help to keep the meat moist and tender. While the lamb is cooking, it's time to prepare the trimmings. Roast potatoes are a classic accompaniment to roast lamb and

Take look at our website www.suffolkheraldrysociety.org.uk and perhaps consider coming along to the Exhibition and meetings of the Society.

In addition to roast potatoes, there are several other trimmings that you can serve with your Easter roast lamb. Carrots and parsnips can be roasted in the oven with the potatoes, or you can steam them for a healthier option. Peas and green beans are a great choice for a vegetable side dish, as they are quick and easy to prepare. Once the lamb is cooked, remove it from the oven and allow it to rest for 10-15 minutes. This will allow the juices to settle and make it easier to carve. While the lamb is resting, you can prepare a delicious gravy using the juices from the roasting tin. Simply remove any excess fat, then add some flour and stock to the pan, stirring continuously until the gravy thickens.

     Gardening tasks for April

A

s the month of April arrives in Suffolk (goodbye March rain!) , gardeners and allotment owners can look forward to a busy but rewarding time. With the longer days and warmer temperatures, there are plenty of jobs to be done in order to keep your green space looking its best. One of the most important tasks in April is to prepare the soil for planting. This involves clearing any weeds or debris that may have accumulated over the winter months, and then digging over the soil to aerate it and improve drainage. April is also the perfect time to start sowing seeds outdoors. Hardy vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, and broad beans can be sown directly into the soil, as can

many types of salad leaves and herbs. It's important to follow the instructions on the seed packet to ensure that the seeds are sown at the correct depth and spacing, and to water them regularly if the weather is dry. For those who enjoy growing flowers, April is a good time to sow annuals such as sunflowers, marigolds, and sweet peas. These can be sown directly into the soil or into seed trays, and then planted out once they have developed a few leaves. April is also a good time to plant out hardy perennials such as lavender and heather, which will provide colour and interest year after year. In addition to sowing seeds and planting, there are plenty of other tasks to keep gardeners and

allotment owners busy in April. Fruit trees and bushes should be pruned to promote healthy growth and to prevent overcrowding. Any dead or diseased wood should be removed, and the branches should be shaped to encourage the growth of new fruiting wood. It's also important to keep on top of weeding and pest control in April. Weeds can quickly take over a plot if left unchecked, and can compete with your plants for nutrients and water. Similarly, pests such as slugs and snails can cause significant damage to young plants, so it's important to take preventative measures such as using copper tape or eggshells to deter them.

Finally, April is a good time to start thinking about summer and autumn crops. If you have space in your garden, consider planting crops such as courgettes, tomatoes, and peppers in pots or raised beds. These can be started off indoors or in a greenhouse, and then moved outside once the risk of frost has passed. In conclusion, April is a busy but rewarding time for gardeners and allotment owners. With the right preparation and care, you can ensure that your green space is productive and beautiful throughout the growing season. So why not don your gardening gloves and get started today?

 Thorpeness

T

horpeness is a charming coastal village located on the Suffolk coast in England. The village was developed by a Scottish barrister, Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie, in the early 1900s. Ogilvie had a vision to create a peaceful and idyllic holiday retreat that was inspired by the novel, The Houseboat on the Styx. He set about creating a unique and whimsical village that would attract holidaymakers looking for a tranquil escape. Ogilvie's vision for Thorpeness was to create a mock-Tudor style village that featured quirky architecture and beautiful gardens. He built a boating lake, known as The Meare, which was modelled after the mythical land of Gondal. The lake is home to several islands, each

Psychiatric Injuries In Personal Injury Claims - The Unspoken Injury? But what about injuries to our mental well-being, either as a result of a physical injury or as a standalone personal injury more widely referred to as psychiatric injury?

Symptoms of psychiatric injury can include: • nightmares or flashbacks • sleep disturbance or insomnia

Can claims for this type of injury still be brought? The simple answer is yes.

• anxiety • headaches

If you can prove that as a result of a third party’s negligence you have suffered a recognised psychiatric illness, then a claim for personal injury and loss can potentially be brought, even if there is no physical injury attached to the incident or accident that caused you to suffer the psychiatric injury.

Louise Plant

W

hen people think about claims for personal injury, the association tends to be with injuries that impact upon the physical body such as broken bones, strains and sprains, or perhaps injuries to the senses such as damage to sight, hearing or cognitive impairment.

• panic attacks • agoraphobia • hyper-vigilance • suicidal thoughts.

Examples of some recognised psychiatric illnesses include: • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) • depression • chronic fatigue syndrome

Claims for personal injury as a result of road traffic accidents, incidents in the workplace, or on public or private property tend to be viewed as something that an outsider can actually see has impacted upon a person.

• lack of concentration

• anxiety disorders; and •adjustment disorders. So what are the symptoms of these psychiatric illnesses?

Claims for psychiatric injury as a result of an accident or a third party’s negligence tend to be far more complex than proving a physical injury, but these psychological injuries should never be underestimated in terms of just how damaging and life-changing they can be.

It is worth noting that psychiatric injury does not include temporary upset, grief or distress. So how do you prove that you have suffered a psychological injury, whether that is claimed in addition to any claim for physical injuries, or as a standalone injury as a result of a third party’s negligence? You would need to obtain a report from a psychiatrist confirming that you have suffered a recognised psychiatric injury.

Psychiatric injuries can arise just as easily from road traffic accidents, incidents in the workplace (such as stress at work claims), are suffered following accidents on public or private property, or as a result of perhaps a criminal offence. At Prettys, we have extensive experience of dealing with claims involving psychiatric injury either as part of a claim for physical injuries or as stand-alone claims. Do you like walking in the rain? Or watching it roll down the windows when you’re all dry and warm inside? We are all different and sometimes it depends on what you are doing. You might be happy to wrap up in your coat and wellies and take the dog for a walk in the rain but if you are rushing into town to do some shopping you just hate it when your glasses keep steaming up! Whether you love the rain or not we do need it. The gardens, the farmers, the reservoirs, the waterbutts. After such a hot dry year last year we have a lot of making up to do to return water levels to ‘normal’. Sometimes , just like a waterbutt, I feel like my water level is running a bit low. My energy, enthusiasm and mood can become a little low and I need to be topped up. Drinking a lot of water, although very healthy, is not what I need when I am feeling like this. An AGM to remember!

T

hanks to everyone who joined us at our AGM on the evening of 9th March – what a great turnout on such a cold, rainy March evening! It was our first formal meeting as the ‘new’ Committee and gave us a chance to talk about what has been happening at the Chamber over the past year and to introduce our vision and plans for the future. Well done to The Orwell Hotel for the superb catering, and we are grateful to our guest speaker, David Barnard of Groundwork East, for telling us how the charity is working across the East of England to create stronger, healthier communities, responsible business and greater prospects for local people. The AGM heard from the various members of Committee: Paul Borroughs, Chair; Murray Oliver, Treasurer; Amanda Oliver, Business Officer; and Rachael Jackson, PR and Marketing (apologies from Leanne Gittins). We also acknowledged the tremendous contributions of

outgoing Committee members, Colin Low, who joined in 2017 and has been a strong advocate of the Chamber over the years, and Andy Proctor, who has taken a new role in Kent. We heard from the Chair how we have been finding our feet as a Chamber and have created a strong, multi-skilled Committee that is passionate about representing the very best that our town has to offer, across a wide range of business sectors within our community. As part of the official business of the evening, we learnt from the Treasurer how – after the rather lacklustre financial performance reported at last year’s AGM – we are now in profit, based on our growing membership and increasing attendance at our regular events. We are proud to have created a lively and varied programme of events throughout the year, covering a variety of topics that affect businesses – such as mental wellbeing, health and safety, sustainability – and these have proven very popular with both members and non-members alike…

especially the ones at The Wine Boutique, for obvious reasons! One of our major projects in recent weeks has been the rebranding of the Chamber, updating our name to just ‘Felixstowe Chamber of Commerce’ and removing ‘Trade’. We think that this simplifies our brand and falls in line with other Chambers locally. We hope that you like the fresh, new branding! Our strong Committee collaboration means that we are able to be agile to emerging business needs, and as such, through feedback from the local community, we have added training to our remit. We have started to provide accredited First Aid training, through experts TRAINEEAST, and we intend to follow this up with Fire Marshall training later in the year.

As a Committee, we have ambitious plans for an even more impactful year in 2023. Through our combined knowledge and expertise, we will be working hard to grow our network and develop new partnerships, helping to add value to our community and ensuring that we continue to represent the ‘Voice of Business in Felixstowe’. chief executive to step down in September

Throughout her time as CEO, Chris has built and led a strong leadership team, and overseen the organisation’s highly respected response to both the Pandemic, and the onset of the Cost-of-Living Crisis. Chris has been pivotal in the creation of so many relationships and initiatives across the VCFSE sector, and ensured the voice of those in the charity and social enterprise space in Suffolk has been more relevant and acknowledged than ever.

C

ommunity Action Suffolk’s Chief Executive, Chris Abraham, is to step down in September, after over four years in post.

Having spent 23 years in voluntary sector infrastructure, Chris will now be preparing to spend more time with her family from the Autumn, but will in the meantime, be actively working with her staff and board to continue CAS’s vital work in the community.

She said: “To have led Community Action Suffolk as Chief Executive over the last four years, has been an incredible chapter of my career.

still more to do. I am sure the next Chief Executive will be someone who can ably navigate the next chapter and contribute enormously to the sector’s strength and success.

Throughout that professional journey I have gained a privileged perspective of the incredible work being undertaken within this county.

For now, the work within Community Action Suffolk is very much ‘business as usual’, and I will be doing everything I can to assist the board in the process of appointing my successor.”

It has made me so grateful to be part of the Suffolk community, and to know that I have been at the heart of a sector which contributes so much to so many. And of course, it goes without saying that the last few years in particular, have brought intense change and challenge, as a result of both Covid and the onset of the Cost of Living Crisis. I am immensely proud at the way in which Community Action Suffolk navigated and led much of the community response with regards to these issues (and continues to), and I am thankful that I was able to fulfil my duties as CEO during the pandemic, being aided by so many motivated individuals and organisations. I genuinely consider Community Action Suffolk to be in a strong position within the county’s infrastructure, and I know there is

Remarking on Chris’s intention to move on from her role, Chair of Trustees for Community Action Suffolk, Kevin Ward, said: “On behalf of the board of Community Action Suffolk, I would like to take the opportunity to thank Chris for the incredible amount of effort, energy and enthusiasm with which she has led the organisation over the last four years. “Not only has she done so much for CAS itself, but she has played such a pivotal role in developing relationships with public and private sector, as well as championing the voluntary sector at every turn. Update from Seamus Bennett, Lib Dem Town Councillor, Felixstowe Coastal ward to focus on other aspects of Felixstowe life highlighted by the newspaper: our sense of community and the breadth of activities available here, and how they were exemplified by two events I attended this week.

Seamus Bennett

I

’ve just seen that Felixstowe made the Sunday Times shortlist of Best Places to Live 2023, published 24 March. Their description says that since its Victorian heyday the resort “has been overlooked in favour of places further up the coast…yet Felixstowe is friendlier, cheaper, and has one of only two Blue Flag beaches in the county” Now, I’m not shy about talking up our Blue Flag :) but on this occasion I’d like

First was the Felixstowe Sports Council (felixstowesport. co.uk) annual awards, which highlighted some of our top clubs, from rugby (new floodlights, great spirit) to judo, to tennis (1st team unbeaten in Suffolk) to bowls, from a visuallyimpaired athlete to lifelong coaches and brilliant youngsters. It demonstrated how our town is getting on and doing great, often unsung, things, open to all. The Sunday Times agrees, saying we have “a roster of clubs, from swimming to Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Club, links golf course and an art group with its own gallery”. And there are many more

– Felixstowe & Walton FC are on the up, there’s a quality hockey club, not forgetting a boxing club for youngsters, now centrally-relocated in Orwell Rd. And I should mention Tim and Sarah from East Suffolk Council who attended the whole evening and remain fully supportive of keeping Felixstowe active. The new leisure centre may now have an estimated opening of 2028 but the wait will be worth it and in the meantime there’s so much going on elsewhere. I also attended an excellent, active Youth Forum meeting, with Colneis and Trimley St Mary primary schools, as well as Level 2 Youth Project and chaired by Felixstowe School. As the only councillor able to attend, I kept a back seat and was struck by how open, inclusive and positive the group was, as they deliberated how to spend their £1000 budget (from the Town Council) for the benefit of as many young people as possible. Several schools weren’t able to be there, but those that were ensured that all our schools would be involved. It felt like a community of schools, proudly part of the wider community of our town. The Sunday Times also highlighted our town centre, including

independents (but somehow overlooking the Bakery!) and enterprises from the Ferry fishmonger at one end to Viewpoint café at the other, and out to Goslings farm shop in Trimley. So, we are indeed lucky to live where we do – our seaside location is special of course, but it’s the people and the way we pull together and get on with things that make our community something of a ‘hidden gem’. I feel privileged to be a councillor for this town and to have contributed to our ongoing well-being in difficult times. But one thing I’m not is complacent, and if fortunate enough to be elected again on May 4th (hopefully this time with Lib Dem colleagues Jan and David) I will keep supporting, keep innovating, seeking to protect our environment, promote our businesses and foster the connections across our community which will always be our greatest asset. [email protected] FB @SeamusTC T: @CllrSeamusB ‘community spirit’ was an important part of their criteria

Being Soft! A warm look is another component of Georgia’s Soft palette. I think that she has achieved this particularly well with the warmer green against her face. Deeper greens also are more flattering for Georgia than their lighter counterparts , yet another feature of her palette.

importantly, how we wear them. I know, this can all sound very complicated. However, once we’re familiar with our colour palettes then the results are definitely worthwhile. Just wait for those compliments.

And let’s not forget the fabrics. The fabrics too have a smooth and matt surface. A shiny, sparkly, or reflective sheen could once again so easily overpower a Soft.

So, it’s not just about the colours we wear, but also, and more

Thank you Georgia!

P.S. Please if you are Soft, always remember your lipstick...and that’s another story!!!!

Local artist in major exhibition This is Georgia. Doesn’t she look fabulous? Her dominant colouring type under the Colour Me Beautiful tonal system of analysis is ‘Soft’. This is because Georgia has very little contrast between her hair, skin tone and eyes. Soft is one of the six groups in the amazing world of colour analysis. The others are Deep, Light, Clear, and Warm and Cool. Gone are the days of ‘The Four Seasons’ and I’m not talking about Vivaldi! As a ‘Soft’ Georgia looks great in colours that are tonally blended to

compliment her natural features. Colours too bright or contrasting will tend to overpower her and ‘wear her...........out!!!’ Georgia looks fabulous in her different shades of green that are tonally blended to create a gentle and muted look. By wearing her ‘greens together’ Georgia is demonstrating a simple and effective method to create the tonal effect that perfectly flatters a ‘Soft’. Another way is by tonally matching different colours so that one isn’t ‘shouting out’ against the other.

Dean’s World with Dean Gould jump, being beaten by Seamus with his last jump all on Sports Day. Around this time, I used to read the Guinness Book of Records and use to watch Record Breakers, the TV Show, Presented by Roy Castle. I so wanted to get on that show. I use to write down all my personal bests with running and jumping, throwing things amongst other achievements in an exercise book.

Dean Gould CRB As a boy at Langer Road Primary School, I found out I was fast at running and entered the 90 metres sprint on sports day, which I won, becoming the fastest runner in the school by the age of 11. I was captain of our house on the day with a girl called Sarah Lund. We had our photo taken for the then Felixstowe Times, local newspaper. I had also won the relay and sack race that day. At Deben High School, I was second fastest at the 100 metres as I was beaten by Seamus Bennett our number one at all sports in our year. I also finished second in the long

When I was 20 years old, I decided to go for the world record for beermat flipping. When I beat the world record, I did not realise what was to come in the future. I first appeared on the local news show Look East. This was 1984; I did not expect it to be the start of much fame, excitement and to meet so many celebrities when appearing on over 120 television programmes, over 200 radio interviews and in over 1,000 local, national and world newspaper and magazine articles, plus hundreds of gigs to this present date. For a fleeting time I became the biggest record breaker in the world, but it was just a fleeting time as a few years later it was someone else. Taken from Flipping’ CrazyThe Dean Gould Story

Easter eggs galore at Felixstowe Museum!

St Elizabeth Hospice announces return of annual Wills Month Lynn Maskell, Legacy Officer at St Elizabeth Hospice, said: “St Elizabeth Hospice’s annual Wills Month provides a great opportunity to complete a simple process which provides great peace of mind to you and your loved ones. “If you are considering leaving a gift in your Will to St Elizabeth Hospice, no matter what size, every penny makes a real difference to the hospice, as we continue to develop and evolve our services to support more local people and their families, throughout East Suffolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney, during difficult times in their lives.”

Independent Suffolk charity St Elizabeth Hospice has announced the return of its annual Wills Month, an initiative which encourages people to consider the distribution of their estate after their death.

Tickets are selling fast for the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Felixstowe Museum on Thursday 6 and Friday 7 April 2023 - with limited spaces available on the four different timed sessions. Suitable for ages 3-10 years, children can hunt for the coloured eggs hidden around the Museum, then exchange them for some real chocolate treats. The giant Landguard rabbit will also be joining in the fun, plus you can make some Easter crafts, play giant games and try your skill on the egg and spoon course.

The sessions run on each day, from 1230-1400 or 1430-1600. Tickets are £7.50 for children and £4.00 for adults. This includes entry to explore the Museum too. Book tickets online now at www. discoverlandguard.org.uk/whatson/the-great-felixstowe-museumeaster-egg-hunt Stephen Rampley, Landguard Marketing and Events Co-ordinator said “Once again our Easter treat for the little ones is proving extremely popular. So, make sure you book your tickets, then hop on down for chocolate goodies, bunnies and Easter fun.” For more information, please telephone 01394 674355 or 01394 444458.

Kirton and Falkenham Gardeners’ Club questions from the floor. Her enthusiasm for horticulture very much shone through and as most of her plants had disappeared by the end of the evening, some of it must have rubbed off on our gardening club members. Kirton and Falkenham Gardeners’ Club meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, Falkenham Road, Kirton. In March we welcomed Claire Mucklestone from Bourne Garden Centre to our meeting. She brought with her a selection of plants that were ideal for the garden at this time of year, including Ranunculi, Hellebores, Saxifrages and Primroses. She had a pleasant informal style to her presentation and took many interesting

On 13th April our speaker will be Geoff Hodge. His talk is entitled “All Muck and Magic”- sounds like we will need our boots for that one! New members are always welcome so do come and join us. £3 for one visit, £15 for a year’s membership. We always finish the meeting with refreshments, a chat and a raffle. Every year the hospice cares for more than 3,000 Suffolk patients and their families at a cost of £12.9m, of which 70% is raised by the community through gift donations in wills, St Elizabeth Hospice’s retail shops and local fundraising activities; with one in five patients cared for by funds donated by gifts in Wills.

Research shows 54% of people of UK adults are currently without a Will and this annual initiative by St Elizabeth Hospice is calling on people to write or update their Will this May. St Elizabeth Hospice’s Wills month has been held annually since 2016, raising more than ££88,175 for the hospice during this time. This year a number of local solicitors will once again be supporting Wills Month, with further details available on St Elizabeth Hospice’s website

those elected by the town should have a free voice to represent those that appointed them. Many other candidates will also state that they also don’t believe that party politics should be part of local government – however they have all taken the conscious decision to stand as part of a political party – to me something about this seems very odd.

Councillor Darren Aitchison BEM With the local elections coming up at the beginning of May my thoughts are naturally drawn towards that event and the preceding period of campaigning. I have made the decision to stand for Felixstowe Town Council as an Independent Candidate, I will be standing in the Central Ward which is where I have lived for the last 23 years. I did strongly consider also putting myself forward for East Suffolk Council, but I have decided against this due to the travel and additional time commitment required. I have a full time job and I’m involved in a number of community initiatives and groups within the town, my feeling is that I can be of more benefit to our town by concentrating on Town Council and the other groups. I took the decision a few years ago to become an Independent councillor, I did this because I strongly believe that there is no place for party politics in local government and

I am extremely proud of the work I have done for the town over the last four years and I am committed to carrying this on if I am elected again. I know that being Independent in the election is a risk as traditionally everyone stood as part of a party and then the voters would vote based on the party they supported, not necessarily the individual. I am trying, in my small way, to change this and ask for people to vote for me because of what I have done for the community and endeavour to continue doing, and not because of the colour of my rosette. Someone very close to me once told me – ‘If you change nothing, nothing changes’ I have tried to live by this in all the community work that I do, if you want something to change then make it change.

Also please remember that if you are voting in person you will need to show some form of photo ID. If you would like to get in contact please email - darren.aitchison@ felixstowe.gov.uk or call 07838 215964. Cllr Darren Aitchison BEM – Independent

Anglia Care Trust Suffolk Domestic Abuse Help Line

W

ith Easter around the corner, kids will be home from school and there will be lots of excitement around Easter egg hunts, chocolate and seeing friends and family. But not in all households. For some households, every time there is a change in the usual routine, every school holiday and every special event means tension, fear and uncertainty. People experiencing domestic abuse will be walking on egg shells, afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing; afraid of upsetting the abuser. Children and pets will be kept quiet, there will be no money for Easter eggs, and there won’t be time for fun and games. In many abusive households, there will also be no friends and family - an abuser has usually created social isolation. Amanda Page, Operational Manager at Anglia Care Trust says: “If you recognise any of the above, you may be experiencing domestic abuse. You are not alone, there is help out there for you.

If you can make one call, make it to our Suffolk Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0800 977 5690 and we can give you support or advice, or we can help you take action. We understand that you may be afraid for your children or your pets; you may feel that having not money is an obstacle but we can help with everything - we support your whole family. One phone call to our free, 24-hour, confidential helpline can change your life for the better.” If you’re unable to make a phone call from home, there are many Safe Spaces around - take a look here to find your nearest one: https:// www.suffolkdahelpline.org.uk/ safe-spaces. Libraries, pharmacies, banks and supermarkets often have trained staff, and a safe room where you can go to access information and make that all-important phone call. ‘Ask for Ani’ is a scheme set up by the Government to allow people to enter a Safe Space and access these areas that can change lives. The Suffolk Domestic Abuse Helpline is also for advice if you’re worried about others - reading this article will equip you to help if you’re concerned about a friend, colleague or family member. Calling 0800 977 5690 will give you access to information on how to support that person and will arm you with information to pass on.

Would you suspect domestic abuse if someone:

• Wore clothing that covered their arms and legs even in the warm?

• Rushed home suddenly or arrived late often?

• Was more agitated or anxious than usual, or more apologetic?

• Took phone calls or text messages frequently wherever they were?

• Had low self esteem or seemed depressed?

• Never had any money?

There may be perfectly reasonable explanations for each one of these behaviours but domestic abuse is all about power and control and all of the above can be signs.

• Refused or dropped out of activities and meet-ups that they’d usually enjoy? • Cancelled dates or appointments, often at the last minute? • Clammed up about their private life?

This Easter, keep an eye out for friends and family and call the Suffolk Domestic Abuse Helpline if you need advice: 0800 977 5690

Revolutionise your lawn with annual machine work paired with our unique Spring Ready Treatment applied from January - working wonders across the nation’s lawns.
