SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

The Waste Dreamland Once there was a young boy named Dev who liked to be organized. He was a li le fas dious too. He usually wondered why his city was not clean. He asked many people around but he never got any sa sfactory answers. One day, he had a scary dream. He found himself on a landfill site full of waste. There was a foul smell all around. Everything was in a dead and decaying state. He could only see garbage, plas c and dead bodies. He got extremely scared and annoyed by the dirty surroundings. S ll, he roamed around hoping to find out the reason behind all this. Suddenly, he came across a dying tree. The roots of the tree were also wrapped in a plas c sheet with a lot of dirty garbage around it. The tree said, “Hey li le boy, please save us! Please save us! Do something for us.’’ Dev was confused. He asked, “What is happening? Where am I?’’ The tree said, “Dear child, you are in your future. You and your friends never take care of yo u r wa ste p ro p e r l y. Yo u ke e p m i x i n g biodegradable waste with non-biodegradable waste. Poor animals and birds die because they eat food from the garbage. Fish and aqua c animals die because of plas c and toxic waste which people throw into the water bodies. We are also dying due to climate change. We are not able to breathe.’’ Suddenly, Dev felt sick and he woke up. Now, he had understood the meaning of his dream. He got all the sa sfactory answers to his queries. The next morning, he started segrega ng the waste at his home. He placed red, blue and green dustbins at different public places. Dev started organizing campaigns for spreading awareness on waste management. Many of his friends and his family members joined him. He ini ated a new wave of cleanliness in his locality. Yes, it always starts with a small step! If Dev could do it, we can do it too. Together, our small steps can bring about a BIG change around us.

Waste Segregation – The Ultimate Solution

Waste, waste everywhere, Food, plas c, paper and glassware. Every day the garbage collector is greeted, To collect our waste which is never segregated.

In my neighbourhood, as I look around, Less number of trees are found, There is a lot of plas c. Let each one of us vow to recycle. Yes! I think this idea is fantas c! Please do not forget, About paper and glass, Collect them too for recycling. Discuss about recycling in your class. Equally important is the fact that we should not li er. Eco-friendly prac ces can make our planet be er. By pu ng the garbage into the dustbin, Together, we can save our Earth and we can win! To keep the environment clean is our duty. We should fulfill our environmental responsibility. Please spread awareness on environmental protec on! For the present and the future genera on!

A pathe c sight not so rare, Is everyone’s worst nightmare! Reduce trash and protect our planet, Reuse all the cans and don’t throw away any packet. Why are people being so mean? Why can’t they use two bins- blue and green? Stop sca ering the waste on the road, Stop dumping garbage and increasing the waste load. Solu on to this garbage problem is well-known and rife, Following the 3Rs is the way to lead a sustainable life. Climate is Changing! My mom says, “Don’t waste anything.” “You must value everything!” “You can create wealth from waste!” She has taught me to segregate waste.

The Earth's climate is rapidly changing, People are experiencing change in weather. Is it going to be be er or worse than ever? Water is deple ng, Global Warming is leading, Glaciers are mel ng, And Floods are increasing. Level of oxygen is dras cally decreasing. Everyone can help limit climate change. From the way we travel, To the food we eat, The electricity we use, The transport we choose, All that it will take Is a change of mindset because there is a lot at stake! Let's take a small step today, Sustainable development is our need. Let’s change the way we live, A sustainable future won’t be far indeed!

One day, she asked me the importance of segrega on. I shared my views on environmental protec on. I put the waste in the right place every day. Wealth from Waste… To save our Earth, there are several things that we can do. Recycle, reuse and reduce! It's not so difficult, I'll tell you how... We should hurry as we need to start now! We should recycle things we use, Separate things we can reuse. Collect paper, plas c and metal, Put them in a bin and let them se le. Using plas c bo les we can make a birdfeeder or any other useful thing. We can even turn an old tyre into a swing. Everyday people throw garbage, People on the street show their rage. But people like you and me pick up the waste, Throw them in different bins and segregate. Segrega on is so easy, not so hard, If we all segregate garbage, there will be no need for any dumping yard. So let us be wiser,

Phil was the kindest kid around. He often picked up garbage from the streets. One day, two mean boys, named Gary and Shaggy came with packets of chips. The first one said, “You're silly because you love garbage.” Phil replied, “It's my idea to have fun.” The boys threw their potato chips wrappers on him and ran away. Phil rode on his electric scooty, carried his own shopping bag and went away to pick up more garbage and installed recycling dustbins on the streets. The bullies kicked the dustbins. Phil quickly put the garbage back in the designated dustbins. All the wet waste such as vegetable peels and fruit peels, leftover food, hair, matchsticks, etc. in the green one and all the non-biodegradable waste such as plastic packets, bottles, old batteries, etc. in the blue one. Suddenly, Gary started gagging as he had accidentally swallowed the chocolate wrapper with the chocolate. Phil came running, made him lie down and pressed on his chest and back till he spewed it out. His friend, Shaggy was out of words. Phil shook hands with both the boys and went away smiling. The next day, the local government officials called Phil to their office. They lauded Phil’s contributions and his efforts to promote sustainability. A few years later, Phil created a unique and innovative ‘Recycle it All’ gadget which he named as ‘The Recyclo-2022’!

A Call for Action

Be Food Wise! The food choices we make every day have an enormous impact on the environment. Even small changes in what we buy and eat can benefit our environment. Mindful choices mean fewer toxic chemicals, reduced global warming emissions and preservation of our oceanic resources.

Sustainable Development Goal 13 is about taking quick actions on climate change and reducing the consequences that we have already started facing. The goal includes changing national policies, improving the education system and spreading public awareness on climate change across the world. A lot of efforts have already been made. It started with the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015, in which countries agreed to ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit global temperature increase. Since then, many countries have invested in r e n e wa b le r e s o u r c e s a n d e n e rg y - effi c i e nt technologies while implementing measures to reduce emissions in various sectors. We see many industries coming up with small actions. For example, the hospitality industry, where even the smaller units have started taking measures for sustainable practices such as reducing single use plastics, reducing waste by regulating toiletries, etc. Similarly, we see a change in the corporate sector where the 'Corporate Social Responsibilities' groups in the organizations are now at the helm of creating many strategic goals that include reducing carbon footprints. In a renowned organization, a training programme called “Climate Fresk” has been introduced to understand what actions can be taken to reduce an individual’s carbon footprints. It has been found that eating non-vegetarian food has bigger carbon footprints than eating vegetarian food. Without such awareness programmes, one would not have a proper understanding of one’s actions and its impact on nature. Let’s not just be mere spectators but effective contributors. We see evidence of actions linked to SDG 13 around us but much more needs to be done if we are to truly achieve this goal. The sustainable future looks distant, but it is not out of reach. The next decade is crucial for it will determine the state of our planet for generations to come.

Food that arrives to your plate after extensive processing tends to require more energy and releases more toxic gases in the air, leading to global warming. Food waste produces 3.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. If processed food were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the US and China. By the year 2050, the world's population will increase by 33% reaching 10 billion. It is estimated that if all Americans eliminate just one quarter pound serving of beef per week, the reduction in green-house gas emission will be equivalent to taking four to six million cars off the road. What we can do is to look for fresh foods with fewer processing steps from farm to plate. Eat food which is ranked lower on the food chain by adding more fruits, vegetables and grains to your diet and limiting your intake of red meat. This can reduce your risk of coronary diseases and colorectal cancer, while reducing your grocery bill. Even composting your food waste reduces greenhouse gas emissions and the need for synthetic fertilizers. These few improvements in our food choices can leave a positive impact on our environment. CURATING CREATIVITY

A Plea There have been five mass extinctions till date. Three out of them have occurred due to an escalation in the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere along with other greenhouse gases, an event which is materializing at the moment. Although these incidents were a result of nature in its process of evolution, this time, our own actions may lead to our extinction. After these horrifying circumstances, the 'Holocene' was one of the most stable periods in the history of our planet. It was during this time that forests, wildlife and various other species thrived. The temperature remained constant with balanced levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide. But as the human population expanded, people sought to take control of their surroundings. Lifestyles changed drastically in order to maximize ease, comfort and satisfaction. These have led to the exacerbation of the situation. As a result of our cynical wrongdoings, we are now on the verge of facing the 6th mass extinction. Scientists have predicted that by 2040, continued deforestation of the Amazon rainforest will result in its degradation, ultimately transforming it into a dry Savanna. Not only will this decimate the biodiversity, but it will also alter the global water cycle. Additionally, the Arctic will experience ice-free summers. Without snow, less of the sun's heat will be reflected back into space. This will accelerate global warming enormously. Population is soaring at a high pace, and may reach a whopping 11 billion by 2100. There are numerous impacts of this on the environment, one of them being an excessive demand for food. Larger areas will be required for farming which in turn will lead to a greater deforestation rate. The ever-rising populace also means higher usage of fresh water. Two-thirds of the humans are predicted to be living with water shortage by 2025. So, what can we do to counter this? Eradication of poverty along with availability of better medical and education infrastructure are the only ways to control population. Nani Palkhivala has rightly said, "More number of children does not mean more workers, but merely more people without work." We must restore stability to our planet by re-establishing its biodiversity. In less than 20 years, renewable energies will be the world's emerging source of power. However, we have to do our utmost to make them the ONLY source. Hence, the plea is to join hands in saving the environment for saving ourselves. As David Attenborough said, "Let us learn to work with nature, rather than against it." Remember, Mother Nature will rebuild itself with or without our help, the only difference between the two is that if the latter happens, we may not be there to witness it! Pranavee Singhal XI C
