Part 7: Writing Using Adverbs of Frequency An adverb of frequency describes how often an action happens. Below are the common adverbs of frequency used in English. They differ in the level of frequency.
always (100%) I / You / We
usually (80%)
go
often (70%) sometimes (50%) occasionally (30) He/She/It
rarely (20%)
goes
never (0%)
The most common position of adverbs of frequency is before the verb. She always listens to music. He rarely gets home before 8 PM. However, with sentences using the verb ‘to be’, the adverb of frequency comes after the verb. She is often alone. They are never on time for the meeting. Some adverbs of frequency – usually, often, sometimes, occasionally – can be put at the beginning or end of a sentence. Sometimes students study on their own. Students study on their own sometimes. While others – always, rarely, never – cannot be put at the beginning nor end of a sentence. Always I brush my teeth. I brush my teeth always. When there is an auxiliary verb in the sentence, the adverb of frequency comes after the auxiliary verb and before the main verb. She doesn’t often like to clean the house. I have never visited Germany. We can usually learn English online.

Part 6: Reading Instruction: Read the following passage and answer the questions.
Asian Business Online Looks at a new development in the world of cell phones. Samsung is developing a flexible smartphone that you can roll up like a piece of paper. This is possible thanks to a wonder material called “graphene.” Graphene is a very light but very strong material made from Graphite – and graphite is something we all know: it’s the gray stuff in our pencils! Graphene was discovered in 2004. It’s such an amazing material that the two scientists who discovered it got the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2010. Smartphone users touch their screens hundreds of times a day, so the screens have to be very strong. And smartphones must also be light, so you don’t notice them in your pocket. Graphene is much stronger and lighter than the material we are using at the moment to make smartphone screens. It’s also much, much cheaper. Samsung is not the only company that is working on project with this attractive new material. Both Nokia and IBM are looking at different uses for graphene. So let the future begin! 1. What is the new smartphone technology that Samsung is developing? a. Rolling up technology b. Touchscreen technology c. Multi-functioned technology 2. What is the material used for developing this smartphone? a. Gemstones b. Graphene c. Gold 3. Why did the Samsung developers choose this new material? a. Because this material is much stronger and lighter than the current material. b. Because this material is easier to find. c. Because the old material’s supplier is nagging about increasing the price.

Part 6: Reading Instructions: Read the following passage and answer the questions. MY CITY Pop singer Charlotte Bond talks about living in London. I live in the center of London. I love it because there’s always something happening, and there are people around whatever time is. Famous people like it too – they often come here for the restaurants and shops. I’ve lived here all my life. When I was little, I had singing lessons at a place near where I live now. I was afraid of the teacher at first, and some of the songs we did together were quite hard to learn. But she was good at what she did, and I learned a lot of things that have helped me in my career. When friends visit me now, I enjoy taking them sightseeing. You can get a bus around the city, but we prefer to walk. I’ve got a little car and I love driving, but there’s so much traffic here, and it’s hard to find parking spaces. One building I love is the Natural History Museum. They sometimes hold parties there, and last December my band and I played at one. I’ll never forget it. When I go to exhibitions at the museum with my friends, I tell them all about that night and how amazing it was. Soon I’ll be leaving London to go on tour with my band. We’re playing in lots of new cities and I can’t wait to explore them. We’ve sold lots of tickets, which is great. I’ll be away from my family for six months, but they’re coming to see me sing, so it’s fine. 1. What does Charlotte love about the center of London? a. It is always busy.

2. How does Charlotte feel about the singing lessons she had? a. She’s surprised she can remember them. b. She’s sorry she didn’t try harder. c. She’s glad she did them.

3. What does Charlotte think is the best way to see the city? a. by car

5. What does Charlotte say about going on tour with her band? a. She hopes lots of people will buy tickets for her shows. b. She feels excited about seeing new places. c. She’s worried she’ll miss her family. d. She’s worried they’re coming to see her sing.

Part 7: Writing
We use the imperative to order or command someone to do or not to do something. We use the basic form of the verb without to, to form the imperative in English grammar. Example:
to stop → Stop! to get in → Get in! to fasten the seatbelt → Fasten your seatbelt!
Negative forms To order someone not to do something, we use do + not before the verb. Most of the time we use the contraction don’t. Example:
Don’t drive too fast! Don’t be sick in my taxi!
We also use the auxiliary verb do when the full verb is be. Example:
Don’t be silly! I cannot drive fast in rush hour traffic.
Passenger: Stop! Could you take me to the station, please? Taxi driver: Of course. Get in and fasten your seatbelt! Passenger: Don’t drive too fast, please! I get sick easily. Taxi driver: Don’t be silly. I cannot drive fast in rush hour traffic! And please don’t be sick in my taxi!

Using a PayPal Account PayPal is a financial services company. You can make and accept online payments with PayPal You can also use it to send and receive money from friends and businesses. When you link your bank account, credit card, or debit card to your PayPal account, you can use PayPal to buy things at online stores. If someone transfers money to you with Paypal, you can withdraw that money to your bank account. Paypal charges a small transaction fee every time you make a purchase, send money, or withdraw money. There are two types of Paypal accounts, a personal account and a business account. If you want to open a business account, you must have a business tax number. A personal account can be opened with your Thai National ID Card. Don’t keep a lot of money in your Paypal account balance, because there is no interest rate. When saving money, you should use a bank like Bangkok Bank or Kasikorn bank. They will pay you an interest rate on savings deposits. Part 6: Reading Instructions: Read the following passage and answer the questions.
Online Shopping My name is Sara, and I love shopping online. I prefer mobile phone apps, but sometimes I use my computer. The phone is more convenient for me, and I can even do my shopping from bed! I love shopping so much that I buy everything I need at home. I get food, electronics, books, and even large pieces of furniture like my sofa and bookshelves all online! But I still prefer getting clothes from a store, so I can try them on to be sure they fit me fine. Yesterday, I bought a birthday present for my mother, and it arrived today! That saves me a lot of time. I am a very busy person, and I am a little forgetful too. If I think of something I need, then it is wonderful that I can buy it at that moment. My friends aren’t as comfortable with buying things online as I am because they think that it can be dangerous. Of course, bad things sometimes happen, but I am very careful with all of my personal details. I think the biggest fear that people have with using their credit cards online is that someone will steal their number. It is important to be sure that the web page is secure. You can see this if the address has got an “s” in it, like https://. That “s” means it is safe. People should not be afraid of shopping online. I think it will be the only way we will do our shopping in the future!

They are frequently placed on sesame seed buns. A salad is a dish. It is made from a mixture of small pieces of food, including vegetables. Salads are usually served at room temperature or chilled. Part 6: Reading Instructions: Read the following passage and answer the questions. Go to Sleep Sleep is very important. Did you know that sleep is more important than food? A person who does not sleep dies sooner than a person who does not eat. Let’s say you go to sleep 12 hours later than you usually do. It will take your body about three weeks to return to normal. We spend about one-third (1/3) of our lives in sleep. That’s about 121 days a year! How much sleep do we need? We are all different. A baby needs 16 hours of sleep every day. Children 6 to 12 years old need an average of 10 to 12 hours of sleep. A teenager needs 9 to 10 hours of sleep. An adult, a person who is 20 or 21 years old or older, needs an average of 7 to 8 hours a night. There are some people who need only 3 hours of sleep. Others need 10 hours of sleep. After the age of 50, the average sleep time goes down to 6.5 hours a night. We need less sleep as we get older. Most people have some nights when they cannot sleep. About one in three Americans has a problem with sleep. Many of these people cannot fall asleep or stay asleep. The name of this problem is insomnia. The word insomnia means “no sleep.” Some people say, “I didn’t sleep all night.” They may sleep lightly and wake up several times. In the morning, they only remember the times they were awake, so they think they were awake all night.

Part 6: Reading Instructions: Read the following passage and answer the questions.
A. Departures This is the usual sequence of activities when you get to the airport. First you go to the check-in desk where they weigh your luggage. Usually you are permitted 20 kilos, but if your bags weigh more, you may have to pay an excess baggage fee (you pay extra). The airline representative checks your ticket and gives you a boarding card for the plane with your seat number on it. Then you go through passport control where an official checks your passport, and then you go into the departure lounge. Here, you can also buy things in the duty-free, e.g., perfume, alcohol and cigarettes. About half an hour or forty minutes before take-off, you are told to go to a gate number, e.g., gate 14, where you wait before you get on the plane. When you board (get on) the plane, you find your seat. If you have hand luggage, you can put it under your seat or in the overhead locker above your seat. The plane then taxis (moves slowly) towards the runway, and when it has permission to take off, it accelerates along the runway and takes off. Note: The verb to taxi is generally only used in this context. B. The flight You may want or need to understand certain announcements; these come from the captain (the pilot) or from an air steward or stewardess / cabin crew / flight attendants (people who look after the passengers): Please fasten your seat belt and put your seat in the upright position. We are now cruising (flying comfortably) at an altitude (height) of 10,000 meters. May we remind passengers (ask passengers to remember) that there is no smoking until you are inside the terminal building (where passengers arrive and depart). The cabin crew (air stewards) are now coming round with landing cards. (These are cards you sometimes have to fill in when you enter certain countries.)
C. Arrival When the plane lands (arrives on the ground), you have to wait for it to stop / come to a halt. When the doors are open, you get off the plane and walk through the terminal building and go to the baggage reclaim where you collect your luggage. You then pass-through customs (green = nothing to declare; red = goods to declare; blue = European Union citizens). If you are lucky, you can then get a bus, taxi or train to the center of town without waiting too long. You can also hire a car (rent a car) at most airports. Note: In British English you normally hire something for a short period, e.g., hire a room for a party, and rent something for a long period, e.g., a flat. For a car, you can use both words.
