Agriculture

Many Ladakhi families own small farms and manage herds of domestic animals such as sheep, goats, yaks and dzos . Agriculture in Markha Valley desert is challenging as growing cycle of roughly from June to August, during this season water is limited to irrigation from melting glaciers. Barley is the region’s main crop as it grows at high elevation and can be stored easily.

Flora ● scanty patches of grasses and shrubs, fruit trees like apples, apricots and walnuts grow here.

● Ladakh contains Dry Temperate Forests.

Fauna Robins, redstarts, Tibetan snowcock,raven and hoopoe are also found there .The animals of Ladakh are wild goats, sheeps, yak,snow leopards and special kinds of dogs.

The animals are reared for their milk, meat and hides. Yak’s milk is used to make cheese and butter. The hair of the sheep and goat is used to make wool.

Ladakh is a home to rare twin-humped Bactrian camels flocking the fascinating Nubra valley.
