6 Foley local February 2023 PAGE 8 > BY LINDA WILLIFORD TIME TO CELEBRATE! ALL THINGS MARDI GRAS The Mardi Gras Celebration is here. It has officially started and will end on Fat Tuesday, February 21st. Mardi Gras traditions are being celebrated all over the world. Mardi Gras arrived in North America as a French Catholic tradition. Many ethnic French cities and regions in the United States have notable celebrations. Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday,” reflecting the practice of the last night of eating rich, fatty foods before the ritual of sacrifices and fasting for the Lenten season. The Mardi Gras celebrations, parades, balls, and parties begin on or after the Christian feasts of Epiphany, which marks the end of the 12-day Christmas season. It celebrates the arrival of the magi bringing gifts to the Christ Child and is sometimes referred to as the “Feast of the Three Kings.” The King Cake plays an important role in the celebration. The King Cake is a blend of a coffee cake and a cinnamon roll. The ingredients are variable, which include cream cheese and different kinds of fruit fillings. The cake contains a plastic figurine which represents baby Jesus hidden inside. In some traditions, the person who gets the slice of cake with the baby Jesus wins a prize and is said to be lucky and prosperous. That lucky person is responsible for baking the cake for the following year. Lisa Mears, the owner of the Polka Dot Pony and the Flip City Gymnastics, is a member of a Mardi Gras Krewe. A Krewe is a social organization that participates in parades or balls during the Carnival season. Mears says, “Krewes can have anywhere from 30 to 300 members in a group. Some belong to a public Krewe, and some belong to a secret society.” Of course, the secret society group wear masks to cover their identity. Mears explains that some Krewes are responsible for floats and parades, while others Photography by Carol M. Highsmith and the Library of Congress

< FROM PAGE 6 8 Foley local February 2023 only march in the parades. Some Krewes hold balls and parties. Some dress casual, and some dress formal. Mears said, “To become a member of a Krewe, you must be sponsored and go through an application process.” She said being a Krewe member can be very expensive. There are membership fees from $300 to $900 a year.” She added that each member is responsible for providing beads and other items for throwing from their floats or while marching in the parades. Mears says, “We throw beads, trinkets, teddy bears, and moon pies to the crowds of people.” As one might be curious about the moon pies, there is a story behind throwing them in the parades. Originally, a box of Cracker Jacks would be thrown, but the city put a ban on throwing Cracker Jacks because if a box hit a person, it could cause injury. Now the moon pie has replaced Cracker Jacks because they are fairly soft, are round with no sharp edges, and have weight to throw. It has been recorded that over a half million moon pies are thrown each year. With all the many parades held, nobody truly knows the actual number. When Mears was asked when does a Krewe start preparing for a Mardi Gras event, she replied, “It is a year-long process. As soon as this year’s event is over, they will immediately start on the next year.” She added, “We have monthly meetings, and you put a lot of hours into it.” Anthony Solorzano of Anthony’s Bridal and Tuxedo Shop in Foley has 35 years of experience supplying formals and tuxedos for Mardi Gras. Solorzano says, “My wife and I personally attend four balls during the Mardi Gras season. But talking business, we supply formals and tuxedos for about 50 Mardi Gras balls within the Mobile, New Orleans, Pensacola, and Gulf Coast area.” He said, “We sell women’s formals and rent men’s tuxedos for these events.” Most people new to the area think that Mardi Gras began in New Orleans, but according to most sources, it started in Mobile. There are parades somewhere every day during the celebration of Mardi Gras. Mears said, “Mardi Gras is such a big deal in South Alabama and New Orleans that schools are out for three days due to all the parades and traffic involved.” For those who want more information about Mardi Gras and its rich history, visit the Mobile Carnival Museum. You will learn about the birthplace of Mardi Gras and about the man Joe Cain who kept Mardi Gras alive in Mobile. There are videos of parades and balls. There are exhibits and facts about myths and costuming, and even float constructions. Photography by Carol M. Highsmith and the Library of Congress

All are Welcome FAITH PAGE SPONSOR Opening the Year to a Breakthrough You and I are invited into a new year with God. Out of all the people who have ever lived, God saw fit that you would be alive in 2023. I believe God has something for you and your family this year! It is the reason why I want to ask you to consider a very important question. Where do you need or want to see a breakthrough in 2023? The word breakthrough means to have a significant advance or discovery that leads to a new place or a new space. In the Old Testament, David became King at the age of 30. One of his first tests as King is to fight an unexpected battle against the Philistines. In 2 Samuel 5, we learn that David wins the battle. He names the place of victory, “Baal Perazim,” which means “God of the Breakthrough.” It’s one thing to desire a breakthrough in life, it is another to experience a breakthrough. I want to suggest three ways to open the door to breakthroughs in 2023. PRAY FIRST Pray when you get up in the morning. Pray before you send your kids off to school. Pray before you make that major decision or before you send that text message. Make prayer your first response, not your last resort. LIVE WITH EXPECTANCY Expectancy is the currency of faith. Expect God to move in your life, your family, and your future. The Psalmist prays, “In the morning, I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.” (Psalm 5:3) MAKE INTENTIONAL CHOICES Change always starts with choosing. Ultimately our choices shape our life far more than our circumstances. If we want to change our life, we need to intentionally change what we do on a daily basis. Joshua, in the Old Testament, says, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15) This year, may God lead you into new and fresh breakthroughs as you pray first, live with expectancy, and make intentional choices. Joy to Serve. Shawn Kennedy Pastor Shawn Kennedy YOU ARE INVITED - CHURCH AT THE SHORES If you do not have a church home, I would like to invite you to be a part of Church at the Shores. We are a church where everyone’s welcome, nobody’s perfect, and anything’s possible. 8:30am (Family Style) & 10:00am (Full Kids Ministry) www.churchattheshores.com

PAGE 16 > BY JASON ZASKY 14 Foley local February 2023 FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED PIZZERIA THRIVES IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY Jayme and Mike Barthse have experienced more than their share of challenges since opening The Brick Oven on Miflin Road in October 2019. First came the pandemic, which forced the proprietors to temporarily shut down the dining room. Then came Hurricane Sally in September 2020, which resulted in tree damage to the building. “We reopened the doors and got back on our feet again, but then there was a staffing shortage, so we couldn’t find anybody to work,” recalls Jayme, yet another challenge that the couple had to overcome to get where they are today. Fast forward to 2023, and The Brick Oven is very much on the upswing, serving up authentic old-world style brick-oven pizza — with dough made from scratch — as well as a diverse array of appetizers, salads, calzones, and pastas, plus a handful of gluten-free options. “The wood-fired brick oven is one of the things that makes us stand out,” says Jayme. “You see it as soon as you walk in the door, and you can see your food being cooked. We also use Bacio® cheese. It’s the most expensive, high-quality cheese you can buy, and it’s got a kiss of buffalo milk, so it’s got a richer flavor,” she adds. That helps explain the popularity of The Brick Oven’s weekday lunch specials, one of which includes: a five-inch pizza; salad or cannoli, and a fountain drink or sweet/unsweet tea. Not to mention pizzas like ‘The Big B,’ ‘The Meatza,’ and ‘The Brick Oven,’ the first of which is akin to a supreme, the second of which is for meat lovers, and the latter being their signature hot and spicy pizza. 16 Foley local February 2023 < FROM PAGE 14 Jayme says The Brick Oven has always benefitted from having a healthy number of regular customers, but is also generating a lot of new business, thanks to word-of-mouth and the influx of new residents into Foley and the rest of Baldwin County. “We hear a lot of ‘We’re new to the area, and we’ve heard you’ve got good pizza,’” relates Jayme, who says the local community has been very supportive of the business from the get-go. “We have had a ton of help and support from the community,” she says. “After the hurricane, our customers were stopping by, and they said, ‘Is there anything we can do to help get the doors back open?’” In turn, the Bartshe’s are big supporters of the local schools and community events, with a local wrestling team, basketball team, and pickleball tournament among the past beneficiaries of their assistance. “We like to support the school system,” she says. “We’ll buy a banner; we’ll donate food. Whatever they need, we’re happy to help,” says Jayme, having noted that she and her husband have four kids, who can sometimes be found at The Brick Oven, washing dishes or handing out menus and generally contributing to the family-friendly atmosphere. “We have had so many struggles we’ve had to overcome to get where we are today, but we’ve been able to keep the doors open,” concludes Jayme, who is happy to report that the staffing shortage issue has been solved and that The Brick Oven’s brightest days are ahead. Traditionally, the King Cake is served on Kings Day, which is the festival of Epiphany. The colors of the sugars represent: Purple-justice and royalty, Green-faith and new beginnings, and Gold-power and kingly.
