The Region of Valencia and the city of Valencia itself remain in the spotlight of international sport with the hosting of the Formula 1 European Grand Prix on the Valencia street circuit – a circuit that takes in the same scenery along which the 32nd America’s Cup was so successfully staged – further reinforcing this great moment in history for Valencian society. In recent years, leading tourist destinations have been making a concerted effort to develop the best selection of sporting, cultural and recreational activities within the framework of what they have to offer, to gain a competitive edge that draws tourists towards them. The Region of Valencia is a European region with a great history of tourism and one that has always been attentive to the constant changes in the highly dynamic and globalised sector that is tourism, applying a large dose of imagination and distinction to complement its already excellent array of destinations and products. La Fórmula 1 calienta motores en la capital del Turia donde se disputará, del 22 al 24 de agosto, el Gran Premio de Europa en el Valencia Street Circuit, uno de los pocos circuitos urbanos del campeonato. La carrera será uno de los eventos más importantes del año. La emoción está servida en Valencia donde se verá en directo el duelo por los primeros puestos de la clasificación, también se podrá comprobar el impresionante rendimiento de los monoplazas en un circuito creado expresamente para el Gran Premio e incluso esperar lo inesperado merced a una de las increíbles hazañas de Fernando Alonso. La décimo segunda prueba del campeonato mundial de Fórmula 1, que promete ser una de las más espectaculares, conseguirá, por sí sola, que durante tres días más de 500 millones de espectadores de todo el mundo tengan puesta la mirada en la Comunitat Valenciana.

Formula 1 is revving its engines in the city of Valencia, which will be home to the European Grand Prix from 22nd to 24th August. One of the major events of the year, this race will be held on the Valencia Street Circuit, which is one of the F1 Championship’s few urban circuits and was created especially for this Grand Prix. The event will give residents and visitors to the city the chance to witness live and direct the battle for pole position, to admire the impressive performance of the F1 single-seaters, and even to expect the unexpected thanks to the thrilling performances typical of top Spanish driver Fernando Alonso. This, the 12th race in the Formula 1 World Championship, promises to be one of the most spectacular, and is set to draw the eyes of over 500 million spectators from around the globe to the Region of Valencia.

UN CIRCUITO RÁPIDO Y URBANO Este año por primera vez se celebran en España dos grandes premios y, por primera vez también, Valencia acoge uno: el décimo segundo. El próximo 24 de agosto será un día inolvidable para los aficionados españoles al automovilismo, porque en un escenario de ensueño los mejores pilotos del mundo se diputarán el podio. El circuito sobre el que se desarrollará el Gran Premio de Europa de Fórmula 1 los próximos siete años es un trazado urbano que recorre la marina Juan Carlos I, sede de la última America’s Cup. El trazado discurre también por el área de expansión de la ciudad hacia el puerto y conecta las grandes avenidas con la zona marítima. El Gran Premio de Europa, que rompe con la concepción de circuitos urbanos lentos y carentes de emoción por la dificultad de realizar adelantamientos, tiene una longitud de 5.473 metros y el ancho de la pista es de 14 metros. Cuenta con un total de 25 curvas, once a la izquierda y catorce a la derecha y los monoplazas deberán dar 57 vueltas completas al circuito para cubrir los 310 kilómetros previstos. El Valencia Street Circuit será uno de los más rápidos del mundial y su diseño permitirá observar espectaculares maniobras de adelantamiento. Se trata de un trazado técnico y muy variado que combina velocidades muy altas con zonas mixtas de menor velocidad de paso. Los monoplazas de Formula 1 tendrán la posibilidad de superar en Valencia

los 300 kilómetros por hora en cuatro puntos del circuito. Además, el trazado se ha hecho con un asfalto especial, con el aspecto normal, pero con un compuesto especialmente recomendado para aguantar grandes esfuerzos horizontales. La recta de salida y los boxes se van a situar en el tinglado número cuatro del puerto. La idea, desde el primer momento, fue poner en el calendario un evento diferente, un circuito urbano del siglo XXI con todas las medidas de seguridad al servicio de los pilotos y también acercar el espectáculo más vibrante del deporte internacional a los aficionados, gracias a un escenario inmejorable como es el puerto de Valencia. HISTORIA DE UN GRAN PREMIO El Gran Premio de Europa comienza su andadura en febrero de 2006, cuando el President de la Generalitat, Francisco Camps, y Bernie Ecclestone, presidente de FOM acuerdan la celebración de una prueba de GP2 Series en el Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo. En abril de ese mismo año, Ecclestone visita Valencia para asistir a la celebración de las GP2 Series en el Circuit. Sin embargo, no es hasta el 9 de mayo de 2007, cuando Francisco Camps anuncia la celebración del Gran Premio de Europa de Fórmula 1 en Valencia para 2008. nizadores del evento- firman un acuerdo con Bernie Ecclestone en presencia del Presidente de la Generalitat. Ese acto fue el verdadero pistoletazo de salida para que Valencia abriera sus puertas al Campeonato del Mundo de Fórmula 1. En julio de 2007, la Conselleria de Infraestructuras adjudica la redacción del proyecto para la construcción del Valencia Street Circuit y en octubre de ese mismo año empiezan unas obras, que ahora acaban de concluir. “La celebración de este evento es el reconocimiento al trabajo realizado, intenso y apasionante, para lograr esta apuesta de futuro sin igual, un proyecto para Valencia, España y Europa”, indicó en su presentación el Presidente de la Generalitat Francisco Camps. Hoy, más de dos años después de aquella primera cita entre Camps y Ecclestone, está todo listo para que empiecen a rugir los motores de los monoplazas en la capital del Turia, en un circuito único en el calendario de la Fórmula 1.

A FAST CITY CIRCUIT This year sees two major firsts for Formula 1 in Spain, with two Grand Prix being held on Spanish soil for the first time ever, and the city of Valencia making its debut as it hosts the 12th race of the season. 24th August is set to be a historic day for Spanish motor racing fans, when the best drivers in the world compete for a place on the podium against a stunning Spanish backdrop. For the next seven years, the Formula 1 European Grand Prix will be held on a street circuit that takes in the Juan Carlos I marina, which was home to the most recent edition of the America’s Cup. The circuit also covers the expanding area of Valencia towards the port and connects the city’s two major avenues with the harbour zone. At 5,473 metres long and 14 metres wide, the European Grand Prix circuit is set to smash preconceptions that city circuits are slow and unexciting and that they provide woefully few opportunities

for overtaking. It has 25 turns – 11 lefthanders and 14 right-handers – and drivers will have to make 57 full laps of the circuit to cover the necessary 310 kilometres. The Valencia Street Circuit is expected to be one of the fastest in the World Championship and its design will allow for spectacular overtaking manoeuvres. The technical and extremely varied course combines high-velocity stretches with mixed areas that require lower speeds, and will enable drivers to exceed 300 km/hour at four points around the track. The track has also been surfaced with special asphalt that looks normal but that has been specially designed to withstand major horizontal forces. The starting straight and the starting grid will be on the port’s quay number 4. From the very start, the idea for the European Grand Prix was to mark the calendar with an excitingly different event, a 21st century street circuit with all of the latest safety measures to safeguard the drivers and one that would bring this most thrilling of international sporting events closer to

the fans thanks to the spectacular setting that is the port of Valencia. THE HISTORY OF A GRAND PRIX The idea for the European Grand Prix to be held in Valencia can be traced back to February 2006, when the President of the Generalitat (Valencian regional government), Francisco Camps, and Formula One Management President Bernie Ecclestone agreed to hold a race from the GP2 Series at the Region of Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo circuit. In April that year, Ecclestone visited Valencia to attend the race. However, it wasn’t to be until 9th May 2007 that Francisco Camps would announce that Valencia was to host the European Grand Prix in 2008. In June, representatives from Valmor Sport, the organisers of the event, signed an agreement with Bernie Ecclestone in the presence of the President of the Generalitat. It was this act that truly gave Valencia the green light to stage the F1 World Championship. In July 2007, the regional government’s Ministry for Infrastructure oversaw the drafting of a project to

construct the street circuit. Works quickly followed in October, and have recently been concluded. “The holding of this event is the recognition of all the passionate and intense work that has been done in order to achieve this commitment to an unrivalled future, a project for Valencia, Spain and Europe,” declared the President of the Generalitat, Francisco Camps, in his presentation. Today, more than two years since that first meeting between Camps and Ecclestone, everything is now in place in Valencia and ready to receive the revving engines of the Formula 1 cars on this unique circuit.
