2022 Organizational All-Stars Gerald Gilberto - MiLB.com

Each offseason, MiLB.com goes position by position across each organization and honors the players - regardless of age or prospect status -- who had the best seasons in each farm system. Here is the 2022 Seattle Mariners Organization All-Stars. Catcher Harry Ford: Ford, the No. 12 overall selection in the 2021 draft, led the organization with a .425 on-base percentage and 88 walks while batting .274 with an .863 OPS and 11 homers for Modesto. The 19-year-old is also very athletic for the position. Ford swiped 23 bases, which tied for second among all primary catchers in the minors. MLB Pipeline’s No. 65 prospect threw out 21 of 78 would-be base stealers while committing just eight errors in 54 games behind the plate. First Baseman Robert Perez Jr (AquaSox 2019, 2022): The 22-year-old’s greatest tool had long been his raw power. This season, Perez was able to translate that raw power on the field. The Mariners No. 20 prospect led the organization with 27 homers, 114 RBIs and 100 runs scored between Modesto and Everett. Perez, who signed with Seattle out of Venezuela in 2016, batted .288 with a .921 OPS and really tore up Northwest League pitching. The six-foot-one, 170-pound slugger extended his season in the Arizona Fall League and won the circuit’s Home Run Derby. Second Bbaseman Kaden Polcovich (AquaSox 2021): The 2020 third-round pick settled in nicely with Arkansas after an inauspicious debut in the Texas League last year. He finished the season batting .242 with a .731 OPS. Polcovich also swatted 12 homers and stole 18 bases, making him one of only seven Mariners prospects to reach those totals. The 23-year-old switch-hitter struggled in limited opportunities against southpaws but swung the bat well from the left side, posting a .263 average and .795 OPS against righties. Third Baseman Joe Rizzo: The 24-year-old made the most of his second season in the Texas League. Rizzo, the Mariners No. 50 overall pick in the 2016 Draft, reached a career high with 21 homers, 69 RBIs, 30 doubles and 84 runs scored. The New Jersey native batted .277 with an .810 OPS and 135 hits in his sixth pro season. Shortstop Mason McCoy: The Mariners dealt a pair of talented shortstop prospects to the Reds in the Luis Castillo deal, but the 27-year-old McCoy earned this nod regardless with an excellent first season in the Seattle system. McCoy was one of only two Mariners prospects to enjoy a 20/20 season, bashing 21 homers and swiping 22 bases -- both career highs. The .805 OPS, 63 RBIs and 23 doubles for Tacoma were also personal bests. McCoy committed only six errors in nearly 1,000 total chances at the position. CONTINUTED ON PAGE 10

Outfielder Cade Marlowe (AquaSox 2019, 2021): The other member of the Mariners’ Minor League 20/20 club, Marlowe played his way onto the 40-man roster with an excellent season in Arkansas before finishing the 2022 season in Tacoma. The 25-year-old led the organization with 143 hits and 94 singles while batting .287/.377/.487 with 23 homers, 102 RBIs and 42 stolen bases across both levels. The club’s No. 21 prospect had seven extra-base hits and 16 RBIs in his 13-game stint with the Rainiers. Landing a 20th-round pick in the 2019 Draft, Marlowe split time among the three outfield positions last year but this season played almost exclusively in center field, registering seven assists. Outfielder Jonatan Clase: There is more to the 20-year-old’s game than his blazing speed, which gets a 70-grade from MLB Pipeline. Clase lead the organization with 55 steals, he collected 46 extra-base hits, including 13 that left the yard, while batting .267 with an .836 OPS in his first full season for Modesto. He recorded 11 triples -- the most in the organization, and his efforts were rewarded with a spot on the club’s 40-man roster. Seattle’s No. 12 prospect had hit exclusively from the left side during in his first two Minor League seasons, but he re-learned the art of switch-hitting while rehabbing an injury that cut short his 2021 campaign. In 125 plate appearances from the right side, Clase hit .232 with three homers and a .750 OPS. Outfielder Gabriel Gonzalez: In his first year stateside, Gonzalez bashed his way out of Rookie ball and fit right in playing in the Cal League at 18 years old. The club’s third-ranked prospect hit .286 with a .789 OPS over the final 32 games of the season with Modesto. Gonzalez’s .321 average was the highest among all hitters in the system with at least 200 plate appearances. In 121 games since going pro, Gonzalez has a career .307/.393/.491 slash line with 14 homers and 70 RBI’s. Starting Pitcher Taylor Dollard (AquaSox 2021): Dollard, the Texas League Pitcher of the Year, went 16-2 with a 2.25 ERA over 27 starts in Arkansas, striking out 131 batters in 144 innings while holding opposing batters to a .203 average. His ERA was the lowest among qualified pitchers in the organization by nearly a run, and his 1.94 walks per nine innings was a top stat within the league. The club’s No. 7 prospect made 18 starts in which he allowed one or no runs. Reliever Isaiah Campbell (AquaSox 2021-22): The club’s No. 24 prospect may be able to progress as a starter going forward, but he excelled in 29 relief appearances between Everett and Modesto in 2022 after spending nearly six weeks on the injured list. Campbell, who lost significant time with an elbow injury last year, made four starts in April, allowing three runs over 18 total innings. Upon returning from the IL, he made one appearance that lasted longer than an inning. Campbell finished with a 1.57 ERA and 59 strikeouts over 46 innings and was added to the 40-man roster at the end of the year.

AQUASOX MANAGER: Ryan Scott Matt Paige - Seattle Sports Union

Over the years, the Everett AquaSox have had some amazing managers. This year we welcome Ryan Scott, a firsttime Manager for the team. Ryan started his official coaching career last year in Modesto as a coach for the Nuts. This year he was not only promoted to manager, but he gets the opportunity to work at a higher level. SSU: So Ryan, tell us about of yourself? Ryan: “I lived in Arizona my whole life. I was drafted out of high school by the Los Angeles Dodgers and played with them for a couple years. I played for the Los Angeles Angels organization and the Seattle Mariners organization. I was hired by the Mariners to coach in Arkansas in 2021, which got washed out due to COVID-19. Then last season, I was an assistant coach for Modesto and now get the opportunity to manage the AquaSox this year. I could not be more excited for that!” SSU: Did you always have it in your mind to be a manager? Ryan: “It got planted in me a little bit early, I guess. My dad coached professionally and this is his 15th year with the Colorado Rockies organization. He is currently the big-league pitching coach for the Rockies. So, coachings just kind of been in the family. Baseball in general has been in the family, and during my seasons with Seattle I got to know Andy McKay very well. They saw something in me and thought there might be a future in coaching when I was done playing.” SSU: What kind of a coaching staff do you bring with you to Everett? Ryan: “I am really excited about the coaching staff! So, Mike Fransoso will be our hitting coach and he is a good friend of mine. He was our hitting coach in Modesto last year. Cameron Ming, who was here in Everett a little bit last year, he ended up taking over for our pitching coach in Modesto when he got a new opportunity. I am very excited for Cameron to get his first full-season as a pitching coach. Sergio Plasencia will the bench coach, first base coach and a little bit of third base. That’s something to explore with him. He is brand new to professional baseball in general, but through my conversations with him, I am super excited for what he is going to bring to the table. Plus our athletic trainers, Dan Laberry and Stephanie McClain and Drew Weidner, our strength conditioning coach, I think we have an outstanding staff and it is really going to set up well for the players.”

SSU: I love your enthusiasm. Where do you get that from? Ryan: “I think it is just natural. I am generally a quiet guy. Going through school, I was always a bit shy, but there is something about talking baseball, being on a baseball field, that brings out the energy in me. A lot of times I enjoy quiet and my down time, but when I get on a field, that’s kind of where the energy comes out. It’s almost like I’m a different person when I’m on the field because that just feels like my natural habitat where I belong. Being with the guys, being with the team.” SSU: So, are we going to see you be ejected from a game? Are the fans going to get a “Lou Piniella” type manager? Ryan: “That is not the plan right now... Oh, no. I try to keep my composure. We will see. I will keep my composure as much as I can.” While the intensity and passion directed at the umpires was Lou’s thing, it sounds like Ryan is more focused on channeling that energy into helping our AquaSox players achieve their goals and dreams. A more productive approach when it comes to developing talent for sure. Fans can look forward to a quiet but positive manager this year. One who has said he’s looking forward to meeting the fans and getting a real chance to experience Everett for the first time. If you see the skipper on the concourse or around town, feel free to stop and say hello! For the entirety of the interview, you can find it on Seattle Sports Union’s podcast, available on iTunes, Spotify and all other main channels of podcasts.
