A warm welcome to you all to Hooks Lane for our Regional 1 South-central fixture. We extend a warm welcome to the players, committee and supporters of Oxford Quins our opponents today. A first visit to the Lane for the Oxford Harlequins, earlier in the season, Havant beat the Quins at their headquarters 38-5. The hot topic of conversion today has got to be the law changes surrounding tackling height, which will come into affect over the summer from level 3 downwards… I will let you debate that one!

The opposition MEET THE OPPOSITION

Oxford Quins Oxford Harlequins RFC was formed in 1996 following the merger of Oxford Marathons RFC and Oxford Old Boys RFC. Oxford Quins are now the leading club in the City of Oxford taking over from Oxford R.F.C. whose 1st XV as of 2022 play in tier 8 of the RFU rugby pyramid in the Counties 2 Berks Bucks Oxon North, the same league as Oxford Quins Men's 2nd XV. In 2015 a possible merger between Oxford RFC and Oxford Harlequins failed to materialise and Oxford Quins moved their matches to Marston Ferry Road. In 2018 Oxford Harlequins moved from Marston Ferry Road to Horspath Sports Ground following the grant of a 30-year lease on the ground from Oxford City Council and the decision by the RFU to invest over £750,000 to build a new floodlit artificial turf rugby pitch at the new site. In July 2021 Oxford Harlequins adopted a new brand and logo,

dropping the "Harlequins" in favour of "Quins" and replacing the logo with a more modern design. Oxford Quins runs a large Mini and Junior Youth section for boys and girls aged 5 to 18, as of 2018 the youth section was one of the largest in Oxfordshire with over 450 players. In September 2020, Oxford Quins launched a Women's Section with the appointment of Pat MetcalfeJones as Women's Head Coach. The newly formed Women's 1st XV at Oxford Quins was entered into Level 4 of the RFU Women's Championship, National Challenge 1, for the 2021-22 season. So far this season Oxford Quins occupy 5th place in the league with nine wins and six losses. One of those losses was against Havant in the first ever meeting between the two sides. However Havant did play Oxford Old Boys and Oxford Marathon in the 60’s and 70’s.

View from the top VIEW FROM THE TOP A very warm welcome to a chilly Havant to both Oxford Quins and to Bill Sweeney – CEO of the RFU for what is their inaugural visit to the Lane, to our good friend Jeff Blackett immediate past President of the RFU and to many of our volunteers who’s great work and commitment we are celebrating at our lunch today. We enjoyed a satisfying 5-38 victory against the Quins back in October, but we have learnt that every team in this league can be very competitive on their day and we know today’s opposition has the firepower and ambition to provide a stern test so this afternoon. We are really looking forward to meeting Bill and sharing what we believe is a successful strategy for sustainable and competitive rugby and something that has seen HRFC buck the trend by growing every aspect of the club, particularly the women and girls’ section whilst many clubs are seeing a decline in players. We will have an opportunity for a Q & A after lunch which will provide us with a view from the top of English rugby. As a completely amateur club, we are really proud of what we are achieving both on and off the field and it is incredible to reflect that we deliver rugby for all ages to over 750 players with a team of way over 175 volunteers. The time, commitment and professionalism that we see week in and week out all year round (not just during the season) is truly astonishing and is a testimony to the culture (for success and professionalism) that has become a key part of Hav’s DNA. We now operate as ‘One Club’ and as a professional rugby business but following the still very relevant ethos of amateur rugby. I would personally like to thank each and every one of you that commit time, energy and passion to our great club and to our wonderful game. We collectively make a huge difference and continue to build a great environment for fun, friendship and of course rugby success. Enjoy your day at the Lane today and let’s make lots of noise but of course, be mindful of rugby’s core values and particularly respecting the referee. #upthehill

Behind the posts

BEHIND THE POSTS I would like to welcome the players, coaches and supporters from Oxford Quins. I hope that todays game will be as entertaining as that in Cowley. I would also like to welcome RFU CEO Bill Sweeney to the club, who very aptly joins us for our volunteers lunch, where we get the opportunity to thank the army of volunteers that help to get rugby out every week. It is very simple that without all of you, rugby would not exist at Havant. Senior rugby at Havant is a totally amateur affair, that sees no player or coach receive any material benefit. I once estimated that Senior Coaches commit over 25 hours per week; planning and delivering sessions, guiding performance at matches, analysing videos and simply seeking ways for us to get better. Without the manager for each side, things would not happen. The continuous chasing of playing, sorting travel arrangements and kit and just making sure that things run smoothly are vital to the delivery of rugby. We also have S&C support, video support and the physios, the team of people that you hope that you never need but are very grateful that they are there when you do. It is important that we recognise all of the players, as they are also volunteers, coaches, managers and support staff on these days, as they often can not attend the lunches as they are preparing for the game. I estimate that there are over 40 volunteers, beavering away to deliver the game that you are about to see. Thank you to all of them that will hopefully deliver us the win today. It is also important to recognise that we always need more volunteers to assist and some will be vital next season. The RFU are changing the player registration process to one that driven through affiliation on GMS. It will be player lead, and ultimately, whilst the modern player spends hours on their smartphone, it is often difficult to get them just to tick “yes” on the app for availability. More people will have to support GMS. The RFU are also introducing the same pitch side care regulations that Age Grade rugby have. This could effectively mean that without appropriately trained individuals, we could find ourselves cancelling fixtures and limiting training numbers, at a time when we are fighting to grow the game. If we apply the same ratio of 150 male players registered, to get out 3 sides (54 players), we will need a pool of 14+ newly trained volunteers to ensure weekly rugby happens. The game needs volunteers more than ever, and I just wanted to thank you all for the hard work that you put in week in, week out. I hope you can join us in the bar after the game. #UPTHEHILL

Match-day report MATCH-DAY REPORT Havant travelled to the bustling Wiltshire town of Royal Wootton Bassett, for the first time ever! to play an important Regional One South-Central game. A warm welcome from our hosts on a cold, wet, and, windy day. Unavailability meant the pack was much changed from last week's terrific win over the Welsh Exiles. The four changes were Jez Smith starting in the front row, Sam Vince partnering Rich Janes in the second row with Mitch Spencer and Nathan Bellman occupying places in the back row. Matt Whitehead made the bench. The backline was unchanged. Buoyed by the local crowd RWB threw the proverbial "kitchen sink" at Havant in the opening fifteen minutes. Havant's defensive line stood firm for the most part. A quick visit to the 5-meter line was all Havant had to show for their efforts. The pressure finally told on the eighteen-minute mark when a quick tap penalty was bundled over the Havant try line. RWB led 5-0 after the conversion was missed. Coming more into the half, Havant finally got on the scoresheet on thirty-eight minutes when Harry Carr had space out on the wing to convert in the corner after some

concerted pressure from the Havant pack. Half-time RWB 5 Havant 5 Havant came out for the 2nd period with great urgency and desire, the flow of the game was much quicker and space was found in the RWB defensive line. Ten minutes in and Havant took the lead for the first time, Ben Chambers finishing off a good backline move just to the left of the posts, Joel Knight's conversion was good giving Havant the lead 5-12. Eight minutes later and Havant found themselves further in front, an excellent finish in the corner for Harry Carr his 2nd of the game, the extras were good from Joel Knight, Havant's lead stretching to 5-19. It was looking ominous for RWB who had three yellow cards in this period of Havant pressure for ill-discipline at the breakdown. Havant, so they thought, put the game beyond RWB with sixty-three minutes on the clock a great run from captain Joel Knight and offload to Ben Chambers gave Havant their fourth try and bonus point, the extras were missed Havant led 5-24. RWB may be bottom of the league but their fantastic spirit got them back in the game with two tries in Continued on next page

almost as many minutes after Joel Knight's yellow card for falling foul of the referee at a ruck. It was a rather uncomfortable time added on by the referee for the Havant faithful on the sidelines. The full-time whistle was a welcome sound for the faithful amongst the vociferous RWB support. A full-bloodied tie ended in bonus points for both teams.

Junior Rugby

JUNIOR RUGBY

Havant U16 Girls secured an important win against last year's league champions to maintain their 100% record this season in the League.Havant began the game a little tentatively, but with No8 Hall dominant, soon began to take control.Roberts, Croft and Newby began mixing play and moved the ball wide for Okechukwu to drive through to open the scoring. Roberts burst through for the second score from a scrum. Half time 10 - 0 Havant increased their lead after phases of recycling the ball, Roberts burst over from 10 metres adding 7 points. The visitors began kicking deep into the Havant 22, crossing twice to draw the score back. Full back Kirkham in her 22, returned the ball back to halfway, phases of recycling resulted in a penalty on the 22, from the tap Roberts burst through to relieve the tension. The visitors scored again, and with the pressure on, birthday girl Wingate on the left wing, sped through to score as the final whistle blew. Giving a final score of 27 - 17.

Havant U14 Boys entertained Tottonians in the Hampshire Cup Quarter Final at Hooks Lane. Despite the early KO time Havant were fired up from the start, taking an early lead through a try from Mills, which was his first of 3, and a tidy conversion by Elvy. The Havant team were in no mood to give Tottonians anything from this game with try’s coming at a fast pace throughout the first half from Huxley, Campbell and a Mills brace, followed up by the two conversions by Elvy which gave a commanding 31 - 0 lead at half time to Havant. With the 2nd half underway Hav didn’t let up with a try by Broomfield, this was followed by a muted response from Tottonians who scored a penalty kick before Lane and Martin added try’s for Hav with the last scored by Gallagher to finish off a great team performance from Hav with a 51- 3 win. With this commanding win Hav U14’s have set up a mouth watering tie against Trojans in the Semi-Finals.
