Facebook Groups We know you love our printed monthly magazines, but would you like the odd digital dose too? This magazine, in all it’s paper glory, can only be popped through your door once a month but we love our readership community and would love to chat to you throughout the month too. We also really like the idea that you can talk to us too!! So, we have created an Hilton & Dove Valley Life private group on Facebook. All you need to do is use the looking glass tool (usually at the top of the screen) to type in Hilton & Dove Valley Life. This should find us, we will be called a ’private group’ and you will have to request to join. There are a few questions once you get there, these will make sure people are in the right place… and wouldn’t be better joining one of our other pages / groups. They’re nothing too difficult or indeed cheeky, I promise!

December is here…and as always, how quickly it seemed to arrive. Life has felt so busy lately, 2 of the household had covid recently and colds and bugs seem to have got to us too, so I feel like November was almost missed entirely! I’m looking forward to getting the tree up as do love Christmas! Twinkly lights, chocolates everywhere, family flying in from overseas, events, parties and catching up with friends that aren’t seen often enough. Amongst our adverts are a few Christmas highlights, local events, our recipe (you can’t beat a Yule Log from one of my favourite TV cooks - Nigella!), and all our advertisers wish you a very Happy Christmas! The end of the year is the perfect time to say thank you to you all for reading and supporting this magazine by using so many of our advertisers. The local businesses find this a good way to communicate their services to an area that they want to work in, and indeed, many live in. The last few years have been tough ones with the pandemic and with the economy as it is now, it continues to be tough for us all. It means such a lot when you support local businesses and your local shops and trades and keeps your local community active and prosperous. We still enjoy producing this magazine and hope to keep it interesting and alive into 2023! I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a great start to 2023. Best wishes

9/10 In Bruges’ writer/director Martin McDonagh reunites with his two stars of that film, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. His last film was the award-winning dark comedy ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri’. McDonagh is by no means a prolific director, but he is very good, can he continue that run? Set on a remote island off the coast of Ireland in 1963, two lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse. Colm has decided to abruptly end their friendship, but a shocked Padraic sets out to repair the relationship. His repeated efforts force Colm to deliver an ultimatum which leads to alarming consequences. Coming out of this I wasn’t sure how I really felt about. I enjoyed it but be warned, this is a very different experience from the trios 2008 collaboration. Where ‘In Bruges’ is wickedly twisted and funny this latest offering is a smaller scale, simple slow burner with some very dry and dark comedy but is also filled with existential dread. This could very easily be a short film or play, but McDonagh with the aid of some excellent acting and writing springs into some unexpected areas. Often making you experience several emotions in just one scene. The acting all around is excellent but of the two stars Farrell has the more screen time and rightly stands out more. I have to mention Kerry Condan as Padraic’s sister and Barry Keoghan as maybe the village idiot, both give show stealing performances. This is by far McDonagh’s best looking film. The cinematography, music, costumes and absolutely cute animals are all excellent. We get some beautiful exterior shots of the island but equally great internal shots of cottages which do a great job of creating the wonderful atmosphere. I’ve only seen this once so far, but it has really stuck with me. I can easily see myself liking it more, the more I see it. Deeply emotional and heartbreaking, it’s the type of film you’ll find yourself thinking about even after a few weeks.

Nigella Lawson’s Yule Log

To advertise please call 01332 416 242 or e-mail [email protected]

Ingredients: (serves 12) For the cake • 6 large eggs (separated) • 150 grams caster sugar • 50 grams cocoa powder • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 5 teaspoons icing sugar (to decorate) For the icing • 175 grams dark chocolate (chopped) • 250 grams icing sugar • 225 grams soft butter • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Don’t expect perfection. Remember that trees are naturally wonky and flawed. Be sure not to over stir the cake mix; you want it light and airy.

Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/gas mark 4/350oF. In a large, clean bowl whisk the egg whites until thick and peaking, then, still whisking, sprinkle in 50g / 1⁄4 cup of the caster sugar and continue whisking until the whites are holding their peaks but not dry. In another bowl, whisk the egg yolks and the remaining caster sugar until the mixture is moussy, pale and thick. Add the vanilla extract, sieve the cocoa powder over, then fold both in. Finally, gently fold in the egg whites. Line a Swiss roll tin with baking parchment, leaving a generous overhang at the ends and sides, and folding the parchment into the corners to help the paper stay anchored. Pour in the cake mixture and bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Let the cake cool a little before turning it out onto another piece of baking parchment. If you dust this piece of parchment with a little icing sugar it may help with preventing sticking, but don’t worry too much as any tears or dents will be covered by

icing later. Cover loosely with a clean tea towel. To make the icing, melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl suspended over a pan of simmering water, then let it cool. Put the icing sugar into a processor and blitz to remove lumps, add the butter and process until smooth. Add the, the tablespoon of vanilla extract and pulse again to make a smooth icing. Sit the flat chocolate cake on a large piece of baking parchment. Trim the edges of the Swiss roll. Spread some of the icing thinly over the sponge, going right out to the edges. Start rolling from the long side facing you, taking care to get a tight roll from the beginning, and roll up to the other side. Pressing against the parchment, rather than the tender cake, makes this easier. Spread the yule log with the remaining icing, covering the cut-off ends. Create a wood-like texture by marking along the length of the log with a skewer or sharp knife and finish with a dusting of icing sugar.

Wine Selection:

Choosing Zweigelt Austria produces most excellent wines of all types, many of which are award-winning. Zweigelt is the most-planted red wine grape variety in Austria and the high-quality wines produced are now recognised around the world. The Zweigelt grape varietal is very capable of creating wines from dry to sweet, easy-drinking, to more complex, full-bodied productions, with grand notes of Morello cherry. Zweigelt ice wines are increasing in popularity worldwide, too.

Ingrid and Markus Iro have a very wellestablished winery. Zweigelt wines account for approx 20% of their total productions at this time and are appreciated by many ‘devotees’. Neusiedlersee DAC Zweigelt (13.5% vol) and Zweigelt ried Ungerberg (14% vol) are extremely popular, from Iro’s ranges. E-mail: [email protected] www.markusiro.at Hans Michael and Andreas Nittnaus produce wines to an exceptional standard, too. Zweigelt is some 35% of total productions, currently. Neusiedlersee DAC Blauer Zweigelt (13.0% vol) and ried Goldberg Neusiedlersee DAC Reserve (13.5% vol) are regular choices for many lovers of Zweigelt and Nittnaus family wines. E-mail: [email protected] www. nittnaus.net Hannes Reeh produces Zweigelt wines that are very much respected. The Zweigelt varietal occupies around 60% of their total wine productions today. Neusiedlersee DAC Zweigelt (13.o% vol) I found to be

another splendid example of this varietal and, if a sparkling Zweigelt is required (great for welcoming guests with and for parties) then Reehbellion (13.0% vol) certainly will not disappoint - A sparkling delight! E-mail: [email protected] www. hannesreeh.at Zweigelt-based wines offer several trocken preferences. Created by Dr. Fritz Zweigelt, during 1922, the splendid productions continue to gain more popularity each year, globally. Zweigelt grapes are now grown in numerous winegrowing regions of Austria. From the enticing bouquet of the wine, through the elegant, fruity mouthfeel, leading on to the palate’s pleasure, Zweigelt wines carry on pleasing. Wonderful to accompany pasta dishes, meat dishes, casseroles and also cheeses. These are just a selection of Austria’s wine producing companies, some of which have a history of several centuries. Take time and pleasure to locate your favourites.

For more information of each company’s productions, please contact and/or visit their respective websites. Also, E-mail: [email protected] and www.neusiedlersee-dac.wine

Winter Warmers: Accessories Six must-have winter warmer accessory trends for the current season. Shine like a star Beat the blues with a little shimmer and glitz this winter. It’s not the boldest look, but a flash of gold like Prada’s brushed leather pumps or Jill Sander’s leather mules - which almost resemble crinkled Christmas candy wrappers - will brighten up even the dullest outfit. There have also been lots of silvery metallics in handbags - big and small and even sequinned, chainmail-esque headwear at Erdem... ideal for a glam ‘knight’ out! Take a hike If you like to put comfort before style, then you will be thrilled to hear that hiking boots are officially on trend.

The rule is, the chunkier and sturdier the better, though preferably paired with a feminine skirt and, if you’re feeling really fancy, cashmere socks. Sass up your socks Talking of socks, things got really glam from the knee down at Christian Dior and Simone Rocha, who sent models out with socks sewn with beads and pearls, respectively. Max Mara on the other hand (or foot), had sumptuously soft, long, red socks with ribbons sewn in; while Acne Studios went for the slightly more punk aesthetic, also known as: socks with holes in. Cool for caps Baseball caps are not usually synonymous with high-end fashion, but this winter they play a starring role. No longer the reserve of sports brands, monogrammed head gear was all over the catwalks, with Givenchy going the extra mile in luxury with a black leather one - undoubtedly the peak of style. Go hobo or go home Slouchy, sexy and compatible with almost any outfit, the hobo bag is back, and not only as lovely as we remember it, it has also had an upgrade. Monogrammed and suspending from a gold chain at Louis Vuitton, crushed and cutesy pink satin courtesy of Miu Miu; and boasting a sheepskin trim at Chanel... it’s a hobo, baby, but not as we know it. Thighs the limit One of this winter’s hottest trends, thigh high boots on the catwalk have been above-the- knee and beyond. There was lots of leather from the likes of Louis Vuitton and Burberry, while the occasionally avant- garde Chanel presented thighskimming wellington boots. Though stylish and practical, the £2,000 makes them somewhat unsuitable for gardening. Thankfully, there are more affordable versions on the high street so get out there and impress!

Make sure you use as much of this year’s £20,000 individual allowance as you can before its use-by date on 5 April 2023 – as you can’t carry it forwards. Money on my mind.. The Martin Lewis Column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at taking back control when creditors come calling. I’ll come straight to the point this month there is nothing more precious or valuable than our mental wellbeing, and there is no bill or invoice that should come before it. I have worked with mental health charities and the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute to ensure people who find themselves in difficult situations are able to access not just financial assistance, but practical and emotional support too. The truth is when people have existing mental health problems, the administration anxiety that comes with bills, debt demands and ongoing financial commitments, can be very difficult to handle, to the point that they’re simply unable to deal with what’s in front of them. Even when in a good place mentally and financially, so many of us find processing everyday matters exhausting, so imagine the added difficulty when starting from a place of weakness. Remember, we have the right to determine how we are approached and contacted

by those we do business with. For some people receiving a text message informing them of something may represent a nightmare. For others, a text is the only way they wish to communicate; while some prefer to converse over the phone, or even face to face. It’s essential we stand up and state our preferences, and organisations have to adhere to these. That won’t necessarily mean the problem will go away... if you are behind on a bill, for instance; but it will bring back control to you and, from the outset, allow you to determine how you want to go about tackling a problem. It was reported that 44% of people with mental health problems who fell behind on payments during the pandemic considered or attempted suicide; and if you macro that up to the UK population that would be two-and-a-half million people. I’ll be honest and say that when I heard that figure, I didn’t find it surprising; but it does surprise and disappoint me that people still don’t feel they have the tools to fight back and retake control. From recovery space to payment holidays, to freezes on interest or repayment plans, speak to your creditors in a way that is firm and fair, and you will likely get the result you want.

DE65 Market Report

It’s fair to say that October was an eventful month and inevitably the political and economic uncertainty has an impact on the housing market. The most striking figure is that there was a 65% drop in the number of sales agreed during October. I think for most buyers it was more a case of hesitating rather than putting plans on hold and at the time of writing one week into November at AKS we’ve already seen more sales agreed than we did in the whole of October which bodes well! Interestingly there didn’t seem to be any change to people’s willingness to put their property onto the market. There was exactly the same number of new properties coming on as there was the year before. With less sales being agreed and the same number of properties coming on we unsurprisingly saw a 5% increase in the number of available properties on the market. The market has clearly changed, and overpriced properties won’t sell. This is reflected in the 71% increase in the number of sellers making price reductions. The early signs are very promising, but it will be interesting to see how the market adjusts over the remainder of the year. The majority of people looking to move are both selling and buying so for most the key figure is the gap between what they sell and buy for rather than the actual sale price alone. In many ways there is now a more stable market to move in as it’s definitely easier to find a new home with less chance of missing out on it! As always thanks for reading and I’d be delighted to help if you’d like any specific advice on your property. You can reach me on 01332 30 30 30 or email me at [email protected].

The last few years have seen increased numbers of wind turbines and solar panels on farmland and with increased electricity costs, the use of fuel filled generators. Farming uses lots of energy, from the care and production of dairy through to the heating/ cooling of poultry units to the refrigeration of grown products to keep them suitable for consumption. One method of energy production is the Anaerobic Digester, found on a few farms. This is where microorganisms break down bio-degradable material, in the absence of oxygen. One of the end products is biogas, which can be used to generate electricity and heat or can be processed into renewable natural gas or transportation fuel. It can convert livestock manure or food waste, amongst other waste products and the separated digestate can be composted, applied to cropland or utilised for bedding, leaving nutrients to be used as fertiliser. are many issues that need bearing in mind. Hedges are being trimmed or laid now and fallen trees from winter storms are sawn up and removed. Boundaries are maintained, most livestock having moved inside, but ewes can be seen grazing the fields and uplands, hopefully the rams having done their job. Bales of silage, hay and straw will be carted around the farm by telehandler or even in the back of a pick-up if need be, to get it to where it’s needed. Big, round bales weigh approximately 270kg-300kg, depending on how dry and what crop is contained, so you can see they can also be very dangerous if not handled correctly.

Glancing out into shadowy paddocks as night falls, sometimes a fox might be glimpsed, looking for food or the white shape of a barn owl silently hunting. The stark shape of leafless trees provide camouflage for other predator birds too. And the howl of the North wind brings sleet or snow to cover all tracks! Merry Christmas!

When we came into office in May 2019, we committed to implement the Neighbourhood Plan and to actively represent the interests of the village with the District and County Councils. The Plan was approved by a referendum in September 2021 and it is now a formal part of the planning process. It is disappointing that South Derbyshire District Council (SDDC) does allow some planning applications through to the consultation phase which are noncompliant however we are vigilant in objecting where non-compliance would have a negative effect on the village and the residents. In most cases we are just asking for changes to the proposed application and not a simple rejection. We spent a considerable amount of time objecting to the 57 house development at the north end of Lucas Lane. The majority of the planning application process predated the Neighbourhood Plan so there are residual concerns over parking and housing mix, as well as the more obvious issues around noise, biodiversity offset, and sewerage/drainage. Our focus on that site is now on planning enforcement ( i.e. making sure that the developer adheres to the planning conditions imposed by SDDC) and sadly Morris Homes is not operating as a “good neighbour”. This is not helped by the District and County Council Officers, not acting with the urgency that we and the residents deemed appropriate. We have been challenging the closure of the bridleway since the first day that it was blocked off. It is unfortunate that Derbyshire County Council did not consult with ourselves or local residents when approving a carte blanche closure. We agreed a compromise with Derbyshire District Council but Morris Homes then imposed their own version of the agreement. Thanks to Cllr Peter Smith who

22

has been representing our position with the County Council. Hopefully, by the time you read this, the agreed on site meeting with the developer, DCC, Cllr Peter Smith and our Cllr Cuddington will have taken place. We have also challenged them on the cleanliness of the road, care of the oak tree and the condition of the verges. Since the decision by Cllr Alex Dale (Cabinet Member DCC) to confirm the walking route to John Port Spencer Academy as being “dangerous”, parents have been seeking a longer-term solution other than the school buses that have been laid on. A meeting is now in the diary for mid-November including ourselves, Cllr Patten, DCC Highways and National Highways to receive a full update on possible ways forward. We will continue to monitor on a routine basis to ensure plans are delivered. Our focus is not just on the local Councils but also St Modwen (the reconstruction of the Greenway path, tree pruning on behalf of residents, and land adoptions), Persimmon (regular tree/ grass maintenance), Wimpey (regular maintenance and land adoptions). SDDC has just started the process of consulting on their Emerging Local Plan. In broad terms this is updating their planning policies, the perceived housing requirement through to 2039 and, eventually, detailing which plots of land have development potential. In the main, these are not new plots, although they were not included in the current Local Plan. All sit outside the settlement boundary which does create additional planning hurdles for any potential applicant. Most of these plots will have to contend with the noise from the A50 or the flooding risk. Any resident can participate in the consultation which can be found on the SDDC website. https://southderbyshire.

At times it feels that the District/County Councils are not fully aligned behind their own planning policies and procedures however we will continue to ensure that we spot issues and challenge them through the various channels available to us. A further project that we have approved at the last PC meeting is for additional lights to be installed adjacent to both play areas by the Village Hall - these will make the equipment more accessible over the winter months. Additionally, we are installing lighted bollards along the jitty running from the Village Hall play areas to Avon Way (adjacent to Soar Close). This is a poorly lit area. The lights will come on when triggered by movement sensors and will be low level so will not impact on residents. We hope that both initiatives will contribute to the safety and amenity of the area.

Pinch of Nom by Kate and Kay Allinson The healthy eating phenomenon that is Pinch of Nom returns with another hundred scrumptious recipes - from fakeaways to desserts - that are both tantalising to the taste buds and good for the waistline. Enjoy more of the food you love. Never feel like you’re missing out, from all-day breakfasts to scrumptious desserts, with crowd-pleasing foody fests so satisfying and delicious you’d never guess they are also slimming-friendly. Published by Pan Macmillan on December 8th. Grannysaurus by David Walliams Bursting with David Walliams’ anarchic sense of fun and blessed with Adam Stower’s vibrant illustrations, Grannysaurus is a roarsome picture book about unpredictable grannies, dinosaur discos and staying up late. A boisterously funny new festive release from the duo, this is perfect for young dinosaur fans! Published by Harper Collins on December 8th. Never Give In: The 12 Commando Rules for Life by Scotty Mills A sudden downpour while Scotty Mills was walking down a street in South London sent him diving for cover into the nearest shop. It turned out to be a recruitment centre for the Royal Marines and, after a few minutes’ conversation while waiting for the rain to stop, Scotty was hooked and signed up to join the elite force. It changed his life and set him on a new direction that would end up with him leading the Marines on operations around the world, becoming an Olympic flag bearer in 2012 and dining at Buckingham Palace with the Queen and the royal family. Scotty shares his lessons of performance and resilience with the reader, inviting them into the secrets of elite culture. His compelling story is one that combines tragedy with remarkable insight about the power of human inspiration. Published by Simon & Schuster on December 8th. Wild Women: A Collection of First-Hand Accounts from Female Explorers by Mariella Frostrup A collection of the greatest women’s travel writing selected by journalist and presenter Mariella Frostrup. From Constantinople to Crimea; from Antarctica to the Andes - throughout history, adventurous women have made epic, record-breaking journeys under perilous circumstances. In curating this collection of first-hand accounts, broadcaster, writer and traveller Mariella Frostrup puts female explorers back on the map. Her selection includes explorers from the 1700s to the present day, from iconic heroines to lesserknown eccentrics, celebrating 300 years of wild women and their amazing adventures over land, sea and air. Original foodie ideas for four-legged friends and resplendent rodents this Christmas.

Pets

Festive Pets Four-legged festive delights and dangers. Treat cats this Christmas with lean slithers of meat - chicken is fine, and they’ll devour any leftover turkey. Mix it up with vegetables such as carrots, swedes, parsnips and sprouts - all very seasonal! - but ensure you do so in moderation.

Also ensure you don’t give your cats any of the following: • Any seasoned meats, or meats cooked in or including gravy, goose fat or stuffng • Onions, as they are highly toxic • Cranberry sauce, as it is too sugary • Chestnuts and bacon, as these contain too much fat • Chocolate, as it’s toxic to both cats and dogs • Potato, in any form, as it contains solanine, which is poisonous For dogs, they can have boneless and skinless white meat, boiled or plain mashed potatoes (remembering not to add any butter or salt), and small amounts of veg, such as sprouts, green beans, carrots, courgettes, parsnips, cauliflower, peas and spinach. Scrambled eggs works well as it contains vitamins, minerals and protein, and little bits of fruit will go down well, although watch the natural sugar content. You should also ensure you avoid the following: • Any meat with bones • Gravy, as it’s too fatty and salty • Herbs and spices, including stuffng • Bulb veg, such as onions, shallots, chives, leek and garlic • Chocolate as, again, this is toxic

28

• Mince pies, fruit cakes, raisins, grapes, sultanas, currants and Christmas pudding • Pigs in blankets, as they are too high in salt and fat Resplendent rodents. Guinea pigs can’t have anything cooked or baked, but dried forages or di erent types of herbs will be seen as a real treat. Rabbits have a dislike to meat as, like guinea pigs, they are also herbivores. Also, cooked veg will be too rich for a rabbit, as well as being no use to them when it comes to wearing their teeth down, which they use carrots and broccoli for. Rabbits do, however, love cabbage and cauliflower, so those Christmas lunch leftovers won’t get wasted! Alfalfa hay is a great and really special treat for rabbits, as it’s higher in protein than regular grass hay. However, make sure it’s only given in moderation as it can be too fattening to have as part of a rabbit’s regular diet. Meanwhile, if you own a hamster, you may just want to take the easy route out and pick up some festive treats at the local pet shop. From nibbles to chew sticks to fruit bits, your hammy is the best exemplar of wanting it to be Christmas every day, given he or she will happily store away nutritious niceties long after the sounds of jingle bells have faded into the distance!

Hooray for Hedgehogs They are the crowning jewels of the British countryside, but when it comes to conservation, hedgehogs aren’t out of the woods just yet.

In 2020, hedgehogs were put on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as vulnerable to extinction in Great Britain. It showed that, while numbers in urban areas have been increasing (an approximation being around 250,000 in built-up places), the news is less positive in rural areas. So, what can we do to help? • Offer good quality hedgehog food, such as meaty cat or dog food, cat biscuits and water for them, especially in the run up to hibernation when they need to build up fat reserves to successfully make it through to the dry weather. • It’s possible to make or buy a hedgehog home that acts as a safe hibernation site in the winter, and consider a secluded

nesting box for a mother and her hoglets in summer. • If you find a hedgehog you are concerned about, avoid picking it up as this may traumatise it, and instead call The National Hedgehog Society, or your local animal rescue centre for advice. • Always check bonfire piles for hedgehogs just before you burn them. • Dispose of litter responsibility as hedgehogs can become trapped in discarded tins and wrappers. • Build hog highways between gardens and make sure ponds have a slope as an exit. • Take care on the roads hedgehogs are nocturnal so are out at night. A hedgehog’s natural defence mechanism is to roll into a ball, but this is no match for a vehicle.

4th December Daughter Remembers Much-Loved Mum in Treetops Light Up a Life Appeal Fiona Hickey has dedicated a light in the Treetops Light Up a Life appeal in memory of her mum, Natalie, every year since she died in 2013. It’s an important annual tradition for the Hickey family, helping Fiona feel her mum is still part of their Christmas. Fiona shares her story to encourage others to dedicate a light in memory of their loved ones and support the local end-oflife charity. “Christmas was always special in our house. Mum and I used to make the Christmas cake and wrap presents together. Mum was everything to me. She was a lovely lady, very sociable and popular.” Natalie was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2010 and was in hospital receiving treatment when the family were told the cancer had spread too far. “It was always mum’s wish to stay at home when the end came. So, myself, my dad and my daughter Danielle looked after her. Towards the end, it got harder. We were struggling because somebody had to be with her at night. She couldn't be left on her own, so we were literally sleeping on the floor next to her because we couldn't fit another bed in the room. We were all exhausted.”

A special outdoor Light Up a Life Remembrance Ceremony will take place at Treetops

Treetops Hospice at Home nurses came to help care for Natalie at night. “I describe the Treetops nurse who came to us as ‘an angel on earth’. She just made so much difference. I knew I was leaving mum in capable, safe hands and it meant we could all relax, have a good night's sleep, and be fresh the next day. The nurses were so special and would just come in, so calm and capable, and quietly took over. And you’d just think, ‘ah, yes, I can relax now’, which was lovely. In the end, mum died at home peacefully and we were all with her. We fulfilled our promise to keep her at home and we couldn’t have done that without Treetops Hospice.” “Light Up a Life is such a lovely way to include somebody that you've lost in a family celebration at Christmas. By dedicating a light, you're remembering that person, and you're also giving something towards helping someone else.”

Hilton, Hatton & Marston Cemetery Over 13 years ago a group of local residents decided that they would like to help maintain the cemetery at Marston on Dove to a ‘garden type’ standard. Over that time, they have cut the grass, trimmed the edges and generally tried to maintain the area to a high standard; all on a voluntary basis. Now they feel they can no longer approach the task with as much energy and have reluctantly decided to pass the baton on to someone else  From the end of the year the cemetery upkeep will be passed back to South Derbyshire District Council and it will be their responsibility to keep the area neat and tidy, unless another group of volunteers wish to take on the task. We have been proud of the work we have done in the past but feel it is getting a bit too much to upkeep. If you, or you know of anyone, who would like to spend some time to keep the cemetery neat and tidy please get in touch with the Council at South Derbyshire Cemeteries department or Friends of Marston Cemetery at: [email protected].

Abbotsholme Arts Society Did you know that the Hilton & Dove Valley has a world-famous Arts Society next door? Elite performers from all over the world have played here for over 50 years. Started in 1968 by Gordon Clark, the Director of Music at Abbotsholme School, the Society has hosted over a thousand concerts, films, readings, lectures and discussions by many of the world’s finest in their field. Dame Judi Dench, Yehudi Menuhin, Humphrey Littleton, John Dankworth, Cleo Lane, James Galway, Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason have all performed in the Abbotsholme School Chapel for us. Although the Arts Society is run separately, the school remains its principal venue, meaning these concerts are practically on our doorstep in the beautiful surroundings of the Abbotsholme estate bordered by the River Dove. For more information visit: www.abbotsholmeartssociety.co.uk.

Harmonics Community Choir Is a friendly choir for all ages based at the Old School House in Tutbury. We don’t do auditions; everyone is welcome and you don’t have to be able to read music; a sense of humour helps though! We sing a mixture of songs, some of which are suggestions from members. We include songs from the shows/musicals, pop songs from the 60s to the present day, folk songs and seasonal repertoire at ‘that time of the year’. We like to perform locally at community and charitable events and we often work in partnership with other groups and organisations. You might have heard us at the switching of the Christmas lights. 3rd December - if you missed us, we’ll be at the Village Hall at 7.30pm to sing classical and modern Christmas carols.  We rehearse weekly from 8pm to 9.30pm on Tuesdays at the Old School House, Tutbury. We welcome visitors and new members. If you decide to join, we charge £3.50 a week. Do come along and give it a try. See you soon.

It could be something different from your usual choice of craft which will inspire you to keep crafting over the coming winter months.

Egginton Parish Council Met on 17th October for the final Ordinary Parish Council meeting of 2022 - how this year has flown! The Parish Council is still waiting for a meeting with DCC Highways regarding our recommended safety improvements at the Carriers Road crossroads. This delay is disappointing as it was expected to be held back in September. Our Annual Village Bonfire and Firework event has once again been a sell out and we’re all looking forward to a fabulous evening on the 5th November. Huge thanks must go to the small team of organisers and their helpers; they work tirelessly behind the scenes so the evening can actually happen and be enjoyed by all. Also, huge thanks to all the willing hands who come along on Sunday morning for the big clear up! By the time of reading, the fireworks will be a happy memory and Egginton Village will be celebrating the Christmas month in style. Our Village Christmas tree will be resplendent and in true Egginton style, the Village will be a blaze of coloured lights.

16th December - Egginton’s Christmas Cheer evening take place from 6pm to 8pm. As in previous years, there will be Carol singing, mulled wine and mince pies and many of our talented Village musicians will be performing outside their homes. Once again, many thanks to the small band of Villagers who are organising this. On 20th October, the P.C. Chairman and myself attended the Derbyshire Association of Local Councils AGM. The day was interesting and informative and provided an opportunity to put faces to names and chat with other Councillors and Clerks about their Parish activities. Ann Webster, Lead on Equality & Diversity with DCC, was the first speaker and she delivered a punchy and thoughtprovoking insight into life with a disability, inclusion and our legal responsibilities in this area. 16th January - our next Ordinary Parish Council meeting will be held at 7.30pm. All are welcome. Susan Nesbitt Clerk & RFO to Egginton Parish Council.

wires leading to the tree by using plastic cardboard tubes and making sure you switch your Christmas lights off at the mains when you’re not home. You should also make sure your Christmas tree has a sturdy base or secure it with weights to stop it from falling over. Any hanging decorations should be hung closer to the top of the tree, out of reach of your cat’s paws, and avoid using glass baubles or any decorations that could break easily and cause harm to your cat. To be super safe, you could ditch the tinsel and swap it for ribbons. But if you want to keep tinsel, just make sure you keep it out of your cat’s reach and don’t let them ingest it. Cats Protection adds that you shouldn’t place any presents for your cat under the tree - especially if they contain catnip, because this will just make your cat manic. Festive Tech Six pieces of tech that could shape a whole new you in 2023 Fizzics Draftpour (around £100) There’s little argument as to what most of us prefer when it comes to the draft beer versus packaged option, yet now you can have both. The Fizzics Draftpour enables a can or bottle to be inserted into the base of what is a slick and stylish looking contraption. You then use it like a beer tap, with the liquid streaming through the device’s MicroFoam technology, which enhances flavour, aroma and mouth feel. The Fizzics DraftPour may just have revolutionised the home drinking draft experience, without the bulkiness or expense of a keg purchase. Biolite Firepit+ (around £200) If you know someone who likes to spend more time outdoors, even in the dirty depths of winter, the BioLite Firepit+ could be the perfect gift. Useful for those who crave open-air, be in the garden or on a day out, this brilliant burner is powered by an e cient battery pack, o ering a glowing, heat-driven experience that’s great for BBQs, or just for staying warm. It even has a USB port to charge other devices. Dji Mini2 (around £400) No matter what angle or filter you might achieve with your top-of-the-range camera or smartphone, you’ll never get the views a drone can... 400ft in the air! The DJI Mini2 represents the latest breed of drone, and coming in under 250g it avoids many of the operator restrictions associated with heavier versions. Its folded dimensions are tiny (131x81x58mm) and it can easily withstand gusts of up to 25mph (level five wind resistance).

46

Blueair Pure Fan Auto (around £250) How clean is the air around you that you breathe? Thankfully, dust, smoke, pollen and more these can all be neutralised with an air purifier, with the Blueair rated as one of the best on the market. Doubling as an air cooler, it can also help when the hot weather comes back round... however far away that may seem! Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2 (around £100) Garmin have evolved from a satellite navigation devices market leader into one of the best brands for dash cam technology, with their Mini 2 succeeding both in its 1080p footage capture, as well as the fact it’s incredibly discreet, fitting, as it does, behind your rear-view mirror. Insurance companies are rapidly talking up the usefulness of dash cam footage during motoring disputes, so this bit of kit could end up saving you thousands. Theragun Prime (around £250) The Theragun Prime can target annoying knots, sore spots and general muscle discomfort, e ciently getting us back into good shape without the need, or expense, of visiting a physiotherapist!
