Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION TO ONLINE FINDING AIDS (OFA)

INTRODUCTION TO ONLINEFINDING AIDS(OFA) Official and private records, as well as memorial and library materials, are kept safe and preserved by the National Archives. Files, publications, newspapers/magazines, letters of agreement, audio-visual materials, royal archives, private letters, private records and archives, microfilms, photographs, maps, plans, and charts make up the collection of archival materials. Accessible tools are available from the National Archive at all times and locations. A tool that helps users find information inside a specific piece of material is Online Finding Aids (OFA). OFA is a tool that makes it easier to find information in a collection of records. The authors of the materials, the formats that have been utilised, the dates it covers, and the way it organised are typically stated in online finding aids, which act as a descriptive guide for archive collections. The next action for scholars and archivists is to study more about the collections and, using an online finding tool, find the materials in a collection that will be the most helpful for their research queries.

Chapter 2 DYMM SULTAN IBRAHIM IBNI ALMARHUM SULTAN ISKANDAR

The Sultanate of Johor: A Brief History It is believed that the Johor Royal dynasty originated in the early 16th century. Johor was founded in 1528 by Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah, a descendant of the Malacca Sultanate. Sultan Mahmood's family ruled Johor until his death in 1699. The capital of the state of Johor is rumoured to have moved as many as 20 times along the Johor River, including a brief stint on Riau Island, due to warfare and the need to maintain commercial dominance. In 1769, Temenggong Abdul Rahman was appointed by Sultan Mahmud III to serve as Temenggong of Johor. The British officially recognised Sultan Husain, the eldest son of Sultan Mahmood III, as the ruler of Johor in 1819. Tanjong Puteri's Iskandar Puteri was founded by Temenggong Ibrahim in 1855. The Bendahara Dynasty officially came to an end with the death of Sultan Ali on June 20, 1877. A phrase coined by Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim. History of Johore Sultanate

The Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim the current Sultanate of Johor was founded by Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim after the death of his father in 1825. As a result of his cunning, on March 10, 1855, he signed a treaty with Sultan Ali that gave him control of Johor. British investment in Johor led to the island becoming a major producer of pepper and gambier by importing the Chinese Kangchu system and Javanese labour contracts. Johor did not start becoming a modern city until 1855. With the construction of government buildings like police stations and courts, Temenggong Ibrahim firmly planted Iskandar Puteri as Johor's seat of power. He successfully combated piracy in the state and promoted literacy among the Malay population. On January 31, 1862, Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim passed away and was laid to rest in Teluk Belanga, Singapore. Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim

Upon becoming Dato' Temenggong Sri Maharaja Johor in 1862, Sultan Abu Bakar consolidated his control. He also recreated the Johor State Flag and Royal Standard in 1866, the year he christened the city Iskandar Puteri Johor Bahru. The Anglo-Johor Treaty signed with the British in 1885 confirmed his position as king and his son's right to succeed to the throne. Johor was the first Malay state to have a formal and written set of laws when Sultan Abu Bakar promulgated the Johor State Constitution on 14 April 1895. A number of government agencies were established, including the Treasury, Police Force, Land and Survey Department, Public Works Department, Maritime Department, Johor Arsenal, Medical Department, Postal Service, and Education Ministry. Johor Bahru and the state of Johor flourished under Dato' Jaafar Muhammad's administration. It was with the goal of improving educational opportunities for Malay youth in Johor that the Education Department was established in 1883. Chinese farmers and Javanese labourers were brought in to help with commercial production of pepper and gambier. In 1886, Sultan Abu Bakar had his own crown made to wear during his coronation. He also instituted the country's first official chivalric orders, including the Darjah Kerabat, a knighthood honour. Sultan Abu Bakar

Sultan Ibrahim was born on September 17, 1873 (25th Rejab 1290) at the Bidadari Palace in Singapore. When he was 17, Sultan Abu Bakar sent him to Europe to further his education and gain valuable work experience. It was on September 7, 1895, that Sultan Ibrahim became the Sultan of Johor. Johor's railroad was constructed in 1908, while the Johor Causeway linking Johor Bahru and Singapore was finished in 1924. Apprehensive about the future of his people, Sultan Ibrahim passed the Compulsory Education Act in 1902, mandating school attendance for all children. The spread of Islamic knowledge was bolstered by the establishment of mosques and other places of worship. On February 2nd, 1900, the Abu Bakar Mosque opened its doors for the first time. The song "Bangsa Johor" was officially recognised as the state anthem, and is currently sung at schools and on other state occasions. Sultan Ibrahim

On October 28, 1894, at the Semayam Palace in Johor Bahru, the world was introduced to Sultan Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim. After being crowned Tunku Mahkota of Johor on September 7, 1895, he reigned until his death in 1909 (Crown Prince). Following his time in England, he went back to Johor between 1910 and 1913 to further his education in state administration. After the passing of his father Sultan Ibrahim on May 8, 1959, Sultan Ismail also passed away in London. They put the crown on his head on February 10, 1960. Under his leadership, Johor's economy flourished. When Tunku Ismail took power as Sultan of Johor in 1946, he called a Malay Congress that eventually gave rise to United Malays National Organization (UMNO). He oversaw government affairs and served as Regent on various occasions. In 1973, he oversaw the opening of Senai Airport and the establishment of the Islamic Religious Council to further the spread of Islam in Johor. Death came for Sultan Ismail on May 10, 1981 (6 Rejab 1401), and he was laid to rest in the Mahmoodiah Royal Mausoleum. Sultan Ismail

Sultan Iskandar was born on April 8, 1932, at the Semayam Palace in Johor Bahru. He travelled to Australia to pursue his education at Trinity Grammar School. In May 1959, he was anointed the Tunku Mahkota (Crown Prince of Johor). On May 11, 1981, Sultan Iskandar was crowned Sultan of Johor. He was the seventh King of Malaysia, reigning from 9 February 1984 until 1989. Under his reign, Johor continued to grow greatly in infrastructure, housing, commerce, education, and religion. After a long and prosperous reign, he passed away on 22 January 2010 and was buried on 23 January 2010 at the Mahmoodiah Royal Mausoleum in Johor Bahru. Sultan Iskandar

Tunku Ibrahim was named Tunku Mahkota Johor on 3 July 1981, after his late father, Sultan Iskandar, was declared Sultan of Johor. While serving as Regent, he made use of the chance to learn as much information as a Ruler while also spending a lot of time with the people of Johor. Following his father's death on 23 January 2010, he was named Sultan. His Royal Highness (HRH) Sultan Ibrahim, a descendent of Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim, specializes in maritime activities and other extreme sports. He is married to Her Royal Highness Raja Zarith Sofiah Binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah and has six children, five princes and a princess. HRH Tuanku is a Malay ruler who travels to every region of the state each year to meet his people through the Mahkota Adventure Programme. Sultan Ibrahim
