Introduction to OFA 01 1

Online Finding Aids (OFA) are digital tools that provide information about archival collections and their content, organization and context. They are designed to help researchers, archivists and other interested parties locate and access materials of interest. OFAs are typically created by archival repositories, such as libraries, museums and historical societies, to provide detailed information about the collection they hold. This information can include the creator of the materials. OFAs can be in the form of paper or digital document, or they may be available online through a repository’s websites. INTRODUCTION 2

HISTORY OF SULTANATE JOHOR 02 3

Johore has a blue flag, with a big red canton with white crescent and fivepointed star, pointing somewhere, but not exactly in lower fly end. The flag consists of a white crescent and a star of five points on a red field at the canton Flag of Johor State and navy blue at the fly. The white denotes a sovereign ruler, red a warrior and blue the universe. This flag is very much associated with the Sultan. Johor's state flag bears a canton pattern, a predominantly navy-blue design with a bright red field on the upper left canton (quarter), which contains a white crescent and a white five-pointed star. Running slightly less than half the length of the flag, the field unconventionally occupies roughly three fifths of the flag's hoist. In addition, the crescent is not aligned upright, tilting to the right towards the lower fly end and wrapping slightly around the star, which is 4

positioned towards the lower right corner of the field. The flag in general attempts to symbolize Johor as a whole. The navy blue, which occupies roughly three quarters of the flag, represents the universe, or the state government. The red represents the warriors that defend the state, while the white crescent and white star denote Islam and Johor's sovereign ruler, respectively. The vast majority of flags in use or formerly used by officials and government branches in the state borrow elements of the state flag, some of which are merely recolors. With the introduction of a unified state flag, many of them became obsolete, with the exception of the Royal Standards. 5

Kesultanan Johor or also called sultanate of Johor, Johor-Pahang, or the Johor Empire) was founded by Malaccan Sultan Mahmud Shah's son, Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah II in 1528. Johor was part of the Malaccan Sultanate before the Portuguese conquered Malacca's capital in 1511. At its height, the sultanate controlled modern-day Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, and territories stretching from the river Klang to the Linggi and Tanjung Tuan, Muar, Batu Pahat, Singapore, Pulau Tinggi and other islands off the east coast of the Malay peninsula, the Karimun islands, the islands of Bintan, Bulang, Lingga and Bunguran, and Bengkalis, Kampar and Siak in Sumatra. During the colonial era, the mainland part was administered by the British, and the insular part by the Dutch, thus breaking up the sultanate into Johor and Riau. In 1946, the British section became part of the Malayan Union. Two years later, it joined the Federation of Malaya and subsequently, the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. In 1949, the Dutch section became part of Indonesia. History of the Malay Sultanate Johor 6

In 1511, Malacca fell to the Portuguese and Sultan Mahmud Shah was forced to flee Malacca. The sultan made several attempts to retake the capital but his efforts were fruitless. The Portuguese retaliated and forced the sultan to flee to Pahang. Later, the sultan sailed to Bintan and established a new capital there. With a base established, the sultan rallied the disarrayed Malay forces and organised several attacks and blockades against the Portuguese position. Based at Pekan Tua, Sungai Telur, Johor, the Johor Sultanate was founded by Raja Ali Ibni Sultan Mahmud Melaka, known as Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah II (1528– 1564), in 1528. Although Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah and his successor had to contend with attacks by the Portuguese in Malacca and by the Acehnese in Sumatra, they managed to maintain their hold on the Johor Sultanate. 7

Frequent raids on Malacca caused the Portuguese severe hardship and it helped to convince the Portuguese to destroy the exiled sultan's forces. A number of attempts were made to suppress the Malay but it was not until 1526 that the Portuguese finally razed Bintan to the ground. The sultan then retreated to Kampar in Sumatra and died two years later. He left behind two sons named Muzaffar Shah and Alauddin Riayat Shah II. Muzaffar Shah continued on to establish Perak while Alauddin Riayat Shah became the first sultan of Johor. 8

Sultan Ibrahim Ismail (2010-Now) Sultan Iskandar (1981-2010) Sultan Ismail (1959-1981) Sultan Ibrahim (1895-1959) 14

Sultan Ibrahim Ismail Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Tunku Ibrahim Ismail was born on 22 November 1958 in Sultan Aminah Hospital, Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaya during the reign of his great grandfather, Sultan Ibrahim. He was the eldest son of Sultan Iskandar by his first wife Josephine Ruby Trevorrow (2 December 1935 – 1 June 2018), an English lady from Torquay, whom Sultan Iskandar (then Tunku Mahmood) met while he was studying in England. Trevorrow, a proprietor by profession, took on the name of "Kalsom binti Abdullah" for a time following her marriage to Tunku Iskandar. His mother has since remarried and lived in England. 15

His great-grandfather, Sultan Ibrahim died in London on 8 May 1959, thus, Tunku Ibrahim Ismail's grandfather, Ismail of Johor succeeded him as Sultan of Johor. Ibrahim Ismail moved up to second in line to the throne, after his father. The late Sultan Iskandar sent him to complete his secondary education at Trinity Grammar School in Sydney, Australia from 1968 until 1970. After finishing his high school, he was sent to Pusat Latihan Tentera Darat (PULADA) in Kota Tinggi for basic military training. He also received military training in the US–at Fort Benning, Georgia and later at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Tunku Ibrahim was appointed as the Tunku Mahkota of Johor on 3 July 1981, and had been primarily residing at Istana Pasir Pelangi since then. Tunku Ibrahim was the regent of Johor between 26 April 1984 and 25 April 1989 when his father served his term as the Yang diPertuan Agong of Malaysia. In recent years, Tunku Ibrahim gradually took over some of the state duties and functions from his aging father, these included the 211th Conference of 16

Rulers, whereby Tunku Ibrahim and Tengku Abdullah, the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang represented their fathers in the meetings, among some other state functions. Shortly before Filipino politician Benigno Aquino’s assassination in August 1983, Tunku Ibrahim met Aquino upon his arrival in Singapore and later brought him to meet other Malaysia leaders across the Causeway. Once in Johor, Aquino met Ibrahim’s father, Sultan Iskandar, who was a close friend of Aquino’s 17

CEREMONIAL TOOLS ROYAL CROWN AND QUEEN’S CROWN The Royal Crown is made of precious metal studded with gemstones of different sizes and shapes, including six large diamonds, three red rubies, four large emeralds, and four large blue sapphires. The crown jar alone contains 1450 small diamonds. The moon and stars are encrusted with dozens of tiny glittering diamonds. Inspired by the late Sultan Abu Bakar. Made in 1886 by the J.W Benson company, London. The Queen's Crown (Diadem) which is a little smaller than the Royal Crown to be used by his wife. In 1925 Sultan Ibrahim was pleased to change and improve the Queen's Crown by holding five large diamonds, each 18 carats. His Majesty added to the regalia by holding a chain or necklace containing 671 diamonds and a tiara made of white gold studded with diamonds. 18

CEREMONIAL SPEAR In the early days, the spear was used as a weapon to control the king's safety during the procession. The current function of the spear is as a symbol of the king's authority, but it is still placed in front of the procession. There are 16 ceremonial spears, and each is 2.14 meters (7 feet 5 inches) tall, pointed and seven-pointed. The spearhead is made of wrought iron shaded with motifs of black pepper leaves and gambir, as well as the symbol of the moon and star that carries the meaning of Islam as the state's official religion. This unscented spear is called the Ceremonial Spear. 19

THE THRONE OF THE KINGDOM The throne of the Kingdom of Johor is two royal chairs located on a pedestal wrapped in blue velvet in the middle of the Singgahsana Room. The throne of the Kingdom of Johor has high and pointed legs in the shape of a tiger's foot with a circular base. This symbolizes power as the lion is considered the king of all wild creatures. The tiger is an animal that is greatly feared by other wild animals in Malaysia. The throne of the Kingdom of Johor is topped with the symbol of the state coat of arms with the exclamation "Kepada Allah Berserah" as has been emphasized. This is the ruling of Sultan Abu Bakar and his subsequent successors 20
