FACTS & TIPS

WHAT IS AN

EXOTIC BULLY? OPINIONS FROM BREEDERS

F

irst, let us start off by stating that Bully Girl Magazine loves all breeds. With that said, there has been a lot of controversy over the past few years about a new breed of dog. The Exotic Bully. Those who brought this breed about and the many who have followed, love the Exotic Bully Breed. However, there are also many who despise this new breed, and feel that it is an unhealthy representation. Once more, there are a great deal of people who don’t even know what an Exotic Bully is.

Bully Girl Magazine looks to shed some light on this new Exotic Bully Movement. We have decided to get opinions from bully dog breeders, as well other bully community members around the world. We simply asked all these people the same two questions: In your own words, what is an Exotic Bully? What is your opinion on the new Exotic Bully Breed Movement? The responses we received were interesting. The Exotic Bully is definitely a controversial topic on a global scale. Read the responses and let us know what you think about the Exotic Bully Breed and Movement on our website. Jacobi Guyton – The Bully Kingdom (Texas) “Hmmmm, to me an exotic bully is exactly like the name exotic! Something special that you don’t see too often. My perfect exotic bull would be short and clean, with a slight bow on the front. It would have a full tail, and be very functional.” “Since there is no standard for the exotic class. I feel that there are too many experiments out there. However, I have also seen some dope ass exotics bulls out there too. D1 Kennels does a great job in that class!”

Orlando Ortiz – Hammerhead Bullies (Texas) “An exotic bully is a smaller compact Bully with bulldog features.” “The exotic bully breed movement is nice if it’s bred right. If you scatter too much blood around it can get messy.” Jessica Wade – Unleashed Kennels (Georgia) “You know, I have a few friends that breed Exotics and to each their own. They aren’t my preferred style of dog. But I have to say, I have seen some clean correct ones lately. If I had to describe it, I would say it’s an over-exaggerated style of features on a smaller, more compact dog.” “I have no problem with it when done correctly. A functional dog should be the result. When the quality of life for these dogs gets compromised, I get upset. Dogs should not die at an early age due to health related issues.” Carlos Hernandez – Pound4Pound Bullys (Connecticut) “In my opinion an Exotic Bully is simply the look of the dog. Certain features in the dog make it exotic, not just the bloodlines.” “I have no problems with the exotic breed as that is what I am currently breeding. I definitely enjoy having exotics. The designer looks they carry as well as their temperaments is something I love.” Brandon Johnson – Triple J Bullies (Louisiana) “An exotic bully is a man’s best friend!” “I love it. I can see things changing. A lot of folks are becoming aware of the breed, and we’re here to make a mark.” Haile Selassie – H.D. Bullyz (Pennsylvania)

Tim Levi – Elite Bully Kennels (Florida)

“An exotic to me is something that is not ordinary, or is different than the usual.” “I feel there is room for all likings. Hopefully, with more time we will see more improvement in the breed.”

“Exotics in our opinion are Bullies that have been bred to the extreme by pushing the envelope of the breed standard.” “Although we prefer pockets and standard American Bullies, we have friends that own everything from exotics to XL’s. To each his own. Who are we to judge? After all, this breed was founded on pushing the limits, since it’s inception.”

From what we can gather, the Exotic Bully Breed is a new designer breed. When bred right you will have an exotic looking bully that will still be functional. When bred wrong, it can lead to various health issues, which can shorten the life span of the dog. Everyone has different opinions when asked about the exotic bully. What are your opinions on the Exotic Bully Breed movement?

KENNEL INTERVIEW

H.D. BULLYZ

“Do tons of research, and when you think you have learned enough, go back and learn more.” - Haile Selassie State your name, and where your kennel is located. I am Haile Selassie, founder of H.D. Bullyz (Haile Defined Bullyz). You can find us in York, PA. What type of dogs do you breed, and what inspired you to get involved with that particular breed? I breed French Bulldogs and English Bulldogs. I was inspired by my wife to get into French Bulldogs. It was the cartoon “Tom & Jerry” that inspired me to get into English Bulldogs. What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year? All of our dogs are on a raw/barf diet. What is your favorite bloodline? My favorite French Bulldog bloodlines are Li-Jie, Shark, and Sopianae Imperator. All of these lines are Hungarian bloodlines. Do you currently show, any of your dogs? We currently have a few dogs we are showing, and a few newly titled dogs. H.D. Bullyz Ch. B-Bop Sam is one of the few we are currently showing. We are working on his Grand Champion title. We love to travel and show our dogs worldwide. What advice do you have for any upcoming breeders? Do tons of research, and when you think you have learned enough, go back and learn more. There is no such thing as knowing enough information. Also, reach out to knowledgeable breeders and ask questions. What do you think, is the most difficult thing for people in the bullygame to overcome? The hardest thing for people in the bully breed community to overcome is togetherness. How do you think they can overcome this thing? We can overcome this as a community by working together more. We should be offering a helping hand when we see our fellow breeders in need of help. Learn to be able to give and take constructive criticism.

10

Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why? I look up to Bully Girl Magazine. I respect LeVar Carter for building his own following. It is cool to see how much he has grown with his company. He is continuously looking for new ways to reach and please his customers with amazing quality in his product. I also look up to Terry Huntley & Melica Kuykendall from Incredabull Frenchies, as they too breed and show Quality French Bulldogs as well. I also look up to my good friend Cindy Batten, a local French Bulldog breeder also out of PA. Tell us about one of your most memorable moments, in 2017 so far. One of our most memorable moments of 2017 was attending the ABKC show in Virginia back in the spring. Also, attending the ABR show in Biloxi, Mississippi back in November. Describe how you would want things, in the bully Community, to be 10 years from now. I would love to see people working together, and becoming more and more supportive of one another. At the very least be more supportive of those bringing positivity to the bully breed community. What separates your kennel from the competition? We are family based and do everything as a family. Everything we do is out of pure love, and we are transparent. What other hobbies or interests do you take part in? I am a huge fan of drone racing, RC racing, and photography. What motto do you live by? I live by the Motto “You Only Live Once (YOLO)”. What do you think of Bully Girl Magazine? KENNEL INTERVIEW

TP-KENNELS “I don’t just say that I breed for temperament. I back it up with facts and certifications.” - Alex Rosario

Tell our readers a little about yourself. My name is Alexander Rosario III. I am the owner and founder of TP-Kennels. You can find us in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey. However, I always shout out my home town Hoboken, New Jersey. What type of dogs do you breed? Also, what inspired you to get involved with that particular breed? My current preference of breed is the American Bully, more specifically the XL American Bully. The thing that inspired me the most about the breed was how badly they were misinterpreted and stereotyped. I believed, and continue to believe that I have the ability to change that perception into a positive one. I own a rescue. I’ve seen firsthand how loyal and loving they are. I’d have to say that also played a huge role as to why I got involved so in-depth. What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year? I keep it simple. Thus, I do stay away from foods that contain processed meats, corn, by-products, and low level brands that are a lot cheaper to buy. I like to use kibble grain free foods, such as Nature’s Domain. I try to stay within having the first three ingredients of the label consisting of meats, fish, or any other source of quality protein. Also, there needs to be a beneficial ratio of carbs to equal a well balanced meal. Do you currently show, any of your dogs? At this point in time, I do not currently show my dogs. However, in 2018 I will be making my way back into the show ring to compete for titles. I look forward to meeting more great people. My most recent production, as well as, other TPK productions have earned their titles ( “C.G.C” and advanced “C.G.C.”) under multiple registries. I look forward to 2018. What advice do you have for any upcoming breeders? Trust is a two way street. Trust the upmost in yourself and never be afraid to ask questions. The only dumb question is the one that you do not ask. Be able to handle criticism. Make a note to never depend on your dogs as a source of income. Your dogs depend on you. If you’re serious about your craft, trust yourself and God. What do you think, is the most difficult thing for people in the bullygame to overcome? In my opinion, ego’s. As the old saying goes, a lot of people will go out of their way and help. However once you become, what’s considered “competition”, those who support you tend to slide out and disappear. How do you think they can overcome this thing? Continue to support one another, especially in their absence. The community and our youth look to us for guidance and direction. We must

12

do a better job at leading by example. Become educated followers so that people can see that with unity comes strength. Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why? I respect and look up to all those who are out their putting that dedication, work, practice, and love into this breed. In reality, the ingredients are right there. Tell us about one of TP-Kennels most memorable moments, in 2017 so far. I do a lot of community work with my XL American Bullys. I would have to say first would be getting their temperament titles (C.G.C. & C.G.C.A.). This is something I truly take pride in. The second would be having the ability to bring joy, love, and laughter to those who need it most. I have two XL Bully’s that are also certified therapy dogs. On the regular, I bring them to rehabilitation centers and senior citizen homes. They are always greeted with love and affection. We were able to make a major impact in our community this year. Describe how you would want things, in the bully Community, to be 10 years from now. I truly expect it to blossom and continue on the path of greatness. I expect more people to temperament test their Bully’s and set the bar higher than it already is. What separates TP-Kennels from the competition? What separates me from the competition is that I don’t just say that I breed for temperament. I back it up with facts and certifications. My first and second generation productions have all obtained their temperament titles and are solidifying their soundness. With that being said, I feel I can back all of my statements up when I say that I breed well balanced, well structured, temperament dogs. What other hobbies or interests do you take part in? Mainly spending time with my family. I also love photography, flying drones, working out, playing all sports, and traveling as much as I can. What motto do you live by? My motto is simple. “Respect is earned, not taken”. What do you think of Bully Girl Magazine? Bully Girl Magazine is a great outlet of productive information that is shared globally. I’ve been a fan since our last interview. I strongly believe that you and your entire team are doing an outstanding job representing the breed. Bully Girl Magazine is helping to bridge the gap between communities and representatives.

I pride myself and carry my name on morals and principles. I strive to make sure that I am always doing great business. What other hobbies or interests do you take part in? Right now I’m focused on coaching both of my kids, both in basketball, and my son in football. What motto do you live by? Failure is not an option. What do you think of Bully Girl Magazine? I love Bully Girl Magazine and what it stands for in the bully community. I’ve personally watched every YouTube episode that they have put out. KENNEL INTERVIEW

ELITE BULLY KENNELS “This isn’t a get rich quick type of business. You have to be willing to invest time, effort, and money into your program if you want to be successful.” - Tim & Fonda Levi

Tell our readers a little bit about yourself. My name is Tim Levi, and this is my beautiful wife Fonda Levi. We represent Elite Bully Kennels. You can find us in New Port Richey Florida. What type of dogs do you breed, and what inspired you to get involved with that particular breed? We specialize in pocket and standard American Bullies. Like many others we started out with American Pit Bull Terriers. However, once we were introduced to the American Bully by a good friend of ours, we immediately fell in love. We were inspired by their overall appearance, temperament, and loyalty. We knew right away that this was the breed for us. What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year? We currently have all of our adult dogs on a high quality, grain free kibble with a 30/20 protein to fat ratio. We also include daily vitamins and rotate between coconut oil and wild alaskan salmon oil throughout the year for their skin and coats. All of our pups are given Taste of the Wild High Prairie Puppy Formula three times daily. We leave the rest to genetics. What is your favorite bloodline? There are so many bloodlines that bring good qualities to the table. We are currently working towards our own vision. Our vision is to have a clean, functional bully. This bully would have a lot of muscle mass, big bone, large head and a short compact frame. Without going over the edge, of course. So be sure to be on the lookout for the new Elite Line coming soon. Do you currently show, any of your dogs? Yes we do. Our stud El Chapo, who is off of Grand Champion RedRum, took 1st & 2nd place BBCR ribbons home this year. We are looking forward to introducing him and a couple of our productions to the ABKC in 2018. What advice do you have for any upcoming breeders? This isn’t a get rich quick type of business. You have to be willing to invest time, effort, and money into your program if you want to be successful. What do you think, is the most difficult thing for people in the bullygame to overcome? Individuals and animal rights groups that try to bring negativity about the breed, due to their own ignorance. How do you think they can overcome this thing? We believe that education is the key to the acceptance of the breed,

16

and responsible breeders. Negative perceptions can be overcome by being the voice for the breed. We try to do exactly what you guys do at Bully Girl magazine. That is to offer educational and informational outlets through websites, magazines and social media. We want to showcase both the breed and responsible breeders in a positive light. Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why? There are quite a few people that we respect in the bully game. We appreciate the way that they have conducted business, and how they represent the bully community. We have met a lot of friends along the way, and we are looking forward to meeting many more. Tell us about one of Elite Bully Kennels most memorable moments, in 2017 so far. Our most memorable moment of 2017 would have to include our road trip to Georgia. We competed in a BBCR show and took home 1st and 2nd place ribbons. Describe how you would want things, in the bully Community, to be 10 years from now. As cliche as it might sound, we would really like to see the bully community come together as a whole. Everyone needs to focus less on the money, greed, and envy. What really matters is breeding quality dogs, that are going to bring happiness to other families for many years to come. What separates Elite Bully Kennels from the competition? At Elite Bully Kennels we pride ourselves on professionalism and legitimacy. We are licenced and regulated by the state of Florida. We strive to treat all of our customers with the respect, courtesy, and professionalism. They deserve it when making such a significant investment into their lifestyle. What other hobbies or interests do you take part in? We are very much into physical fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. We are also very family oriented, and we love doing family activities. My wife is very much involved with our children’s schools. She is the school treasurer and she is on the board of the PTO. What motto do you live by? Raise Your Standards! What do you think of Bully Girl Magazine? We think you guys are awesome! You are great advocates for the breed. We enjoy your magazine, and are big fans of your Bully Gear at BGM Warehouse. On behalf of everyone at Elite Bully Kennels, we would like to thank you very much for this opportunity!

KENNEL INTERVIEW

UNLEASHED KENNELS “Stick to your word, because at the end of the day that is all you have. Reputation will get you further than anything else.” - Jessica Wade

State your name, and where your kennel is located. My name is Jessica Wade. I am the owner of Unleashed Kennels. You can find me in Auburn, Georgia. What type of dogs do you breed, and what inspired you to get involved with that particular breed? My breed of choice is the XL American Bully. I started back in 2005 with Pit Bulls. I was looking for a calmer version that would be more of a conformation show dog, with the ability to be a family pet as well. So in 2008 I made the switch to American Bullies. The love and loyalty this breed has is hands down. I fell in love. I have such a special bond with each one of my dogs in different ways! What type of diet do you keep your dogs on throughout the year? They are on 4 Health Grain Free Dog Food, with raw given as treats. What is your favorite bloodline? I breed XL American Bullies, so I am a huge fan of the large yet functional bloodlines. That’s why I am in love with old school bloodlines, such as Watchdog and Greyline. Do you currently show, any of your dogs? Yes, I have been showing with the ABKC since 2011. I try to show on a yearly basis. What advice do you have for any upcoming breeders? I would say to be true to yourself, and never change to get on someone else’s level. Also stick to your word, because at the end of the day that is all you have. Reputation will get you further than anything else. To maintain your reputation you have to always do what’s right, no matter the loss or hardship it may cost you. What do you think, is the most difficult thing for people in the bullygame to overcome? To me it’s pride. When someone becomes boastful or thinking they know it all, it’s game over! I am constantly learning. My very own mother was a Dog Show Judge and Veterinarian for over 20 years. Humbleness and kindness is what I notice a lot of people are lacking nowadays.

18

How do you think they can overcome this thing? Take time to listen and learn. Don’t try to jump into something without knowledge. Once you have a lot of really amazing breedings or show wins, just be happy and share it. Don’t get arrogant and forget where you started. Who do you look up to in the bully game, and why? I honestly look up to a lot of my fellow breeders, in all classes and breeds. Mainly people I have met at shows or purchased my foundation dogs from. As cheesy as this may sound, I looked up to my mother who passed away in 2014, while I was at my favorite Atlanta dog show. She taught me to be who I am today, and she gave me so much knowledge on breeding and raising dogs. I will never forget any of it! Tell us about one of Unleashed Kennels most memorable moments, in 2017 so far. Man oh man! After having 2 years of what I call bad luck with my breedings, I would say it was my rising studs first show this past March. He took first place up against another fellow friend/ breeders male. I was so proud of him! He also has gone on this year to sire several litters that are so far very consistent. I can’t wait to see what the the years ahead look like for him! Describe how you would want things, in the bully Community, to be 10 years from now. Ten years from now I’d hope that more people come together to help one another. Your fellow breeder isn’t your competition, but someone that you could help and receive help from. We all need to have more unity. Stop trying to step on people to get further. What motto do you live by? You get what you give. What do you think of Bully Girl Magazine? I think it’s a great bully breed magazine! We share the same thoughts and feelings, when it comes to the health and well being of the bully breed!

FACTS & TIPS

Here are more tips to keep your bully breed dog safe and cozy during the chilly seasons: • • • •

CARING FOR

BULLY BREEDS

• • • •

Suitable shelter is needed to keep your dog warm and dry. Carpet and tile areas can become extremely cold, so make sure to put some blankets and pads on floors. Brush your bully regularly since keeping your dog well groomed will keep them protected. Feed your bully extra calories if it spends a lot of time outdoors since it takes more energy during the winter to keep their body temperature controlled. Just like us, bully breeds are also prone to illnesses during winter season. Take your dog to the veterinarian if you see any symptoms. Give your bully plenty of water since your dog is likely to get dehydrated in the winter as in the summer. Don’t use over the counter medication unless you ask your veterinarian. Protect their paws since they will be on the open road and exposed to ice, snow, and salt which can cause damage. Spend time playing indoors and take him/her outside when the sun shines.

• • •

Play fetch with toys not sticks since this can be a choking hazard and can cause other injuries. Cold as well as hot weather can harm your dog’s skin. Foods like coconut and fish oils are foods that can help keep your dog’s skin healthy. Prevent toxins. Together with winter comes antifreeze, which dogs find sweet and will lick or drink it. Antifreeze is extremely toxic and can even be fatal.

Holidays precautions tips If your bully breed dog is not used to being around large crowds, holidays are not the best time to practice socializing. Don’t allow your guests to give your dog leftovers. Don’t leave your dog alone with a Christmas tree. You are asking for disaster! Watch out for electrical cords. Dogs tend to chew on them. Do not give alcohol or chocolate to dogs, since these are toxic for them. Take the necessary precautions to keep your bully breed dog safe and happy during this winter season. They will appreciate it, and pay you back with lots of love and dog kisses!

DURING THE WINTER SEASON When the temperatures begin to drop, bully breed dogs don’t have the advantage of pulling something out of the closet to wear. Though some parts of the country are likely to enjoy cold weather, sudden changes in weather can leave pets trembling in their boots. It’s important to change your pet’s routine so you can keep them calm, happy, and safe. Different dog breeds react to weather differently. Some dog owners tend to believe that because their bully’s have a fur coat, they can stand cold weather better than humans. But that is not always true. Winter season is a time when your bully breed dog needs a little extra care. Winter health risks and how to prevent them Keeping your bully breed dog warm during this winter season is important to keep your canine in their best health. Just like us, dogs are adjusted to the warmth of the indoors. The cold weather can be as hard on them as it is to us. There are also health risks that your bully could endure during this cold season that you should be aware of. Frostbite and hypothermia are two of the most serious health risks your dog can suffer during the winter time. This can happen when your bully has been bare and exposed to cold weather for too long. Even though hypothermia and frostbite are curable, they can leave lasting tissue damage if the symptoms are not treated on time. What dogs are more vulnerable? Wet dogs Small dogs Short haired dogs Short muzzle dogs Dogs that are left out in the cold for a long time What is Hypothermia? Hypothermia takes place when the temperature of your bully breed dog drops, and the dog begins to lose body heat faster than they can

20

restore it. This can happen when you’re walking your dog outside. The heat from their paws quickly transfers to the cold ground they are walking on. On a very chilly day, your dog only needs to take a few steps before his paws begin to freeze because they are not able to restore the heat in their paws before they hit the cold floor again. During cold weather your dog will continually be trying to maintain their body heat at its normal temperature. Dogs maintain their temperature by either preserving their body temperature or by producing more body heat. They do this much like humans react towards cold weather. Shivering is the main way dogs produce heat, or piloerection which is much like goosebumps. The dog’s hairs stand up thus trapping a layer of warmth under them. This creates an extra layer of protection between the dog’s body and the cold weather thus helping them preserve body heat. Vasoconstriction is another form of preserving body heat that is performed to keep blood flowing to the dog’s body parts that are the most important for his survival such as the brain, lungs, liver, toes, ears, etc. What is frostbite? Frostbite refers to tissue damage that is triggered due to severe cold weather conditions. As mentioned initially, dogs lose body heat when there is not enough blood flow to different parts of their body such as ears, paws, and tail. When these areas are not getting enough blood, they starve of warmth and oxygen. This causes ice crystals to form which in turn can cause the tissue to die. Spotting the symptoms of frostbite can be difficult since they are usually covered by hair. But you can keep your eye out for pale skin which tends to be very cold to the touch. Some of the most common areas are the tail, ear tips, paws, and scrotum. When their skin begins to get warm it will redden and swell. This causes discomfort and in a few days the skin will dry up and have a scaly appearance. Depending on the seriousness of the frostbite, the dead tissue can turn black and slough off. Just like with hypothermia, the way to prevent frostbite is by not having your dog outside during freezing weather for long periods of time.

FACTS & TIPS

The landlord was aware that the dog posed a threat.

LOOKING FOR AN APARTMENT Are you a proud owner of a Pit Bull or Bully Breed dog, and are trying to rent a home? More than likely you might have to deal with some form of discrimination against your pet during your search. Trying to rent an apartment that will allow your furry friend has become more and more difficult. Especially if your pet happens to be part of the Bully Breed. Pit Bulls more often than not are stereotyped as being dangerous and aggressive animals, especially towards people. This type of breed is known for being the most popular in a dogfighting crowd and when an attack occurs dogs may be labeled as being part of the bully breed even if they aren’t. So, even if your credit is immaculate, you are a responsible pet parent and your pet is well behaved, you might still have a difficult time during your search. You might even feel the rejection when asked by the property management company, “What kind of dog do you have?” When a conversation quickly changes from possibly getting a home to thank you for your interest followed by a dial tone. For you, getting rid of your pet is not an option because you should never give up on family, right? There are many rental places that allow pets but who still have some restrictions that include weight, breed, and species. Finding a pet-friendly apartment is easy, compared to finding a pet-friendly apartment that allows any type or kind of pet including Pitbull’s, Bulldogs, Rottweilers, etc. There are also places you will run into that once they hear “Pit Bull” all of a sudden, they are not interested. Here are some suggestions to get you prepared to meet the landlord: Make a resume for your pet and don’t forget to include how wonderful and awesome they are. Do you have a degree or certificate, been in a position for many years or have been promoted that caused you to move? You can create a resume through Google for $9 or do it yourself. Collect all the updated information that includes your pets recommended vaccinations, proof of rabies shots, proof of heartworm testing, microchip information and registration, Neuter and Spay certifica-

If the landlord knew or thought that the dog could be dangerous and could potentially be a threat to others. Example: If there was a prior incident where the dog attacked another tenant, and the landlord was aware, and continued to allow the animal to remain on the property knowing that it could be a threat. This liability allows the landlord to remove the animal from the property.

held accountable if the dog injures someone. Example: The tenant signed a pet agreement that indicated that if the dog showed any malicious behavior the tenant could get rid of the animal, or that they would need to move out with the animal. The dog injured someone, and the landlord didn’t follow through with the agreement and the dog bites another person. The landlord could be held liable. The landlord allowed the dog to remain on the property even though they understood the animal posed a threat.

The landlord is NOT allowed to remove the animal.

The landlord protects the well being of the animal.

There are also states that will hold the landlord liable even if the landlord is aware that the animal could pose a threat if the landlord was not able to remove the animal legally. If you have tried to remove the animal but have no legal authority to do so, based on the state laws or the lease agreement, more than likely you will be held accountable for any future damages. In these circumstances, you should alert all tenants that there is a dangerous animal on the property and put up beware signs.

If the landlord cares for the dog, watches over him, feeds him, etc., if the dog injures or causes damages they can also be liable as if they were the dog’s owner and would be considered a De Facto owner.

The landlord was allowed to remove animal, and chose NOT to.

As you can see, renting a home or apartment can be a little bit of a hassle on both side, the landlord and the tenant. However, if both parties are responsible and take the right precautionary measures, it can be a pleasant experience. Renting to a tenant with a pet of any kind involves some sort of risks. There should be no discrimination when it comes to Pit Bull or Bully Breed dogs.

If a landlord was aware that the animal posed a threat and could have removed the animal from the property, but chose not to, they can be

tions, etc. A letter of reference from your veterinarian, groomers, neighbors, and even your prior landlord is important and can benefit you plenty. Gather high-quality pictures of your dog, preferably playing with your children. This will show that they really are part of the family. Information about any classes your pet completed such as obedience classes, CGC, therapy, etc. You can also bring a video that you saved on your phone of your pet being playful and sweet. Offer an extra pet security deposit to ease the landlord’s potential concerns for damage. Gathering all this information will give a better outlook of securing your new rental home or apartment. Finding a rental home or apartment can also be difficult because many landlords don’t like to deal with the liabilities that come with renting out to someone with pets. This especially goes for Pit Bull’s or Bully Breed dogs. Most owners of bully breed type dogs unfortunately face breed discrimination, and as biased as it may be, it’s something you will need to consider. Dog bites are one of the fears many landlords face when they allow tenants with pets. Even though the responsibility of a dog bite rests on the dog owner, there are certain circumstances where the landlord can be held liable. Usually, if a dog harms someone the owner is held responsible. This is especially true if it’s the first time that you are aware that the animal showed aggressive behavior. As a landlord, it is best to advise your tenant to purchase renters insurance. It is also important to ensure that the policy includes injuries and damages caused by a dog, and that it does not exclude bully dog breeds from the coverage. The policy should also include at least $100,000 of personal liability coverage. There are some instances where a landlord can be held liable if the tenant’s dog causes harm. Be mindful that laws vary by state, but you can check locally for specific rules that may apply to you.

who grabbed a gun and ran to the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs and helped limit the death toll during that tragedy.

COLIN KAEPERNICK CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

IN the December 2017 issue of GQ, former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is featured on the cover as it’s “Citizen of the Year”. It all goes back to Kaepernick taking a knee during the playing of the National Anthem during a preseason game last year to protest the mistreatment of Black Americans by police and law enforcement. The GQ article begins this way.

“He’s been vilified by millions and locked out of the NFL—all because he took a knee to protest police brutality. But Colin Kaepernick’s determined stand puts him in rare company in sports history: Muhammad Ali, Jackie Robinson—athletes who risked everything to make a difference.” It’s important to note that Kaepernick was not interviewed for the

34

article. In fact, he has remained mostly silent since taking the knee, hoping to let his actions speak and not adding any additional fuel to the fire. But he agreed to participate in an attempt to reclaim the narrative of his original protest, a narrative that has been clouded some with follow up protests by NFL players and teams and has had political overtures. President Donald Trump has even spoken out on the issue and it has become more about disrespecting the American Flag that Kaepernick’s original cause. Rather than being interviewed, Kaepernick and the magazine selected 10 people, among them Filmmaker Ava DuVernay, legend and activist Harry Belafonte and former San Francisco 49er teammate Eric Reid to weigh in on Kaepernick and the cause he has chosen to undertake. And as you can imagine, Kaepernick is lauded by those interviewed as everything from a true civil rights activist to an American Hero, and someone who is extremely well spoken with the courage to do what he decided to do, even though it appears to have derailed his football career. But immediately upon word getting out about the GQ story and the naming on Kaepernick as the “Citizen of the Year”, the controversy and outrage began again. In a Fox news article titled “GQ should’ve named Colin Kaepernick it’s ‘Coward of the Year”, they called GQ’s definition of what it means to be a good citizen and a good man and a hero a bit puzzling. Here is how they put it. “Apparently, GQ seems to think that disrespecting our military and spitting on our flag is a symbol of heroism and manliness. That’s not citizenship – that’s cowardice.” They also went on to cite examples of people who should have made their list. Such as a marine veteran who rushed injured victims of the Las Vegas massacre to the hospital, or the Texas plumber

There is certainly no one that can argue that those individuals aren’t heroes or even citizens of the year for what they did. But with the Colin Kaepernick situation, it’s really all in how you look at it. Sure they were selective in the people they interviewed for the GQ story, but they are still Americans who have valuable opinions. To many people however, those opinions seemed to go a little over the top, at least on the surface. One of those interviewed was Activist Linda Sarsour, co-founder of the “Nasty Woman” march. Sarsour heralded the former professional football player as a genuine American hero. “There might even be a day when we’ll be walking down Colin Kaepernick Boulevard and people will remember what Colin Kaepernick did, just like we remember Muhammad Ali,” she wrote in a GQ essay. “And I truly believe that in my heart.” On the other hand, people will point to the fact that we are talking about someone who wore socks depicting police officers as pigs and has initiated a lawsuit against the NFL alleging collusion against him, which may just seal the fact that he won’t play in the NFL again. But if you go back to original narrative that Kaepernick protested on, the mistreatment of Black Americans by police and law enforcement, it is clearly a valid protest and something worth addressing. But is there a better way to do it than showing disrespect during the playing of our country’s National Anthem? Most people would say yes. The American flag stands for so much more than just one issue. That’s why the message and the protest gets blurred.

Many think there are better ways to promote change in our country. You don’t have to look far to find several other NFL players who have contributed in different ways. The Eagles Malcolm Jenkins, along with several other players, met with lawmakers in Washington D.C. “to better understand how this country works when it comes to laws and policies.” Miami Dolphins receiver Kenny Stills went on a ride-along with Miami police, and participated in a round table with law enforcement to better understand their challenges saying afterward; “We understand that every cop isn’t a bad cop, just like every NFL player that makes a mistake, were not all bad guys. And so they’re doing their best. So just telling the young kids, hey, if you see a police officer and you need anything, ask for help. Thank them for their service.” And don’t forget the Houston Texans JJ Watt, who raised more than $37 million for Hurricane Harvey relief. So even though the Kaepernick narrative has come center stage again with the GQ article and the associated publicity it’s receiving, it’s not hard to question their decision to make him the “Citizen of the Year.” For Kaepernick, the article was a way to keep his protest in the public eye and continue to bring attention to it, something he clearly feels strongly about. But for the average American, Kaepernick is not looked at as an American Hero or even a true civil rights activist. Because of the platform in which he chose to make his protest known, he has distanced himself from a large portion of flag waving Americans and military veterans. But whatever side you are on, you can be sure the controversy will continue. Hopefully his message is heard, and he did not risk it all for nothing.
