Pelican Preserve FRIENDS in Need of COMPANIONSHIP Established and run by Pelican Preserve Residents

Make a Difference in Girls Lives - “Days for Girls” and the GRACE Project

WHAT DO WE DO? Provide occasional companionship 1-2+ hours (weekly, monthly, quarterly, whatever you are able to do), so that a caregiver can go to exercise class, the grocery story, get a haircut, etc. Or, it may be a Resident that lives alone and may be recuperating from recent surgery and would like to have someone to converse with, someone to play cards/games with, or just have some company watching TV, etc. This program is for Resident owners. Not applicable for Renters.

The Pelican Preserve “Days for Girls” group of 20-30 volunteers meets in the Sewing Studio one Sunday afternoon each month to make and assemble reusable menstrual management kits. These are part of the global effort to enable poor and rural girls to attend school, instead of missing school five days a month when they have their periods with no access to feminine hygiene products. The Grace Project (Guatemala Rural Adult and Children’s Education) delivers our kits to Guatemala. It also provides workshops to girls and women, teachers, midwives and community leaders on family planning, human trafficking prevention strategies, and teacher training.

INTERESTED IN THE PROGRAM? Volunteer forms are available at the Town Center Reception Desk with Ashley Gonzalez. Forms are also available on the Pelican Preserve website under General Info > Documents & Forms. If you are in need of companionship for yourself or loved one, please submit the “Request for Companionship” form, which is also available online or with Ashley Gonzalez. CONNECT WITH US For more information, contact CC Carpenter at (239) 791-8106 or Alma-Lynn Kamps at (239) 689-6660 or email [email protected].

Supplies for all hygiene kits made at Pelican Preserve come from donations from our community. In addition to monetary donations, needs include yardage of 100% cotton flannel, gallon Ziploc freezer bags, and underwear (size 14 girl’s panty briefs, colorful 100% cotton). Come and join our productive group! If you have gently used items you would like to donate to the Lee County Habitat for Humanity ReSale Store, please contact Ashley Gonzalez, Town Center Receptionist, at [email protected]. They accept items such as furniture, appliances and automobiles. Habitat will schedule a pick-up on the last Saturday of each month. Notes from the Library Pelican Preserve Residents have been extremely generous in donating books to our ever-growing library. The Library Volunteer Committee asks that you please donate only paperback, and hardcover fiction and non-fiction books. At this time, there is not enough shelf room for cookbooks, foreign language books, children’s books, reference books or periodicals. If, at a future time, we have additional space, we certainly will look into expanding our collection. Additionally, when returning books, please leave them in the basket provided and they will be shelved by the library committee.
