Stay Fit for Summer Program – It’s time to Cross-Train We are so excited to announce our 2013 Stay Fit For Summer Program. The Program will run June 1-September 30. Whether you are here at Pelican Preserve or in another location, all Residents are encouraged to participate. The emphasis this summer will be on cross training. Cross training is a way to vary your fitness program by combining different types of exercise activities. Cross training is an ideal way to develop a “balanced” fitness program. Varying your workout routines engages different muscle groups. This not only improves your overall fitness, it helps to prevent overuse injuries that are more common in single-sport activities. Calendar of Activities There will be scheduled daily fitness activities for you to perform. While you may not feel like you need a schedule for working out, having a training plan will help keep you on track to meet your goals, and ensure that you build up your workout time gradually enough that you don’t get injured. Plus, crossing off each workout as you complete it will give you a sense of accomplishment, and confidence. Start Small and Build Slowly The idea of “starting an exercise routine,” can seem daunting. It doesn’t have to be. Begin with a 15-minute

walk. Feeling good? The next day, do it again. If you’re feeling strong, add five or 10 more minutes. Work up to 35 minutes in no time at all. Walk Then Run, If Desired Though some people dismiss “walk” as a simple activity, it is the most effective way to develop the fitness you need to start running comfortably - without getting hurt. Walking puts your legs and arms through the same general range of motion as running, but without the same impact on your bones and joints. The walk should be brisk - not a race walk, but not a window-shopping walk either. By the end of the Program, it is our hope that you will be able to have the skills and fitness level to participate in a Sprint Triathlon. This includes a 1/4 mile swim, a 10-mile bike ride, and a 5k (3.1 mile) walk/run. If you do not have access to a pool, please substitute walking for that day’s activity. Please stay tuned for our June training schedule.
