History, Hard Facts & Helpful Characteristics

1

THE NORTH ANNA DAM

1

The Birth of Lake Anna

Lake Anna wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the North Anna Dam. In fact, before the lake, it was solely the North Anna River, hence how the dam got its name. Part of the watershed of the Chesapeake Bay, North Anna River is well known for being a major battle site in the American Civil War. The lake was created for recreational purposes and to provide cooling water for the North Anna Power Station, which now powers 450,000 homes. It all began in 1968 when Virginia Electric and Power Company (now Dominion) purchased 18,000 acres of farmland in 3 counties along the North Anna and Pamunkey Rivers and started building the dam. Upon the closing of the dam in 1972, the lake was complete and just needed to be filled. While it was projected that this step would take 3 years, rainfall from Hurricane Agnes helped transform that timeline into just 18 months.

Know the Dam Facts

The North Anna Dam is an earthen embankment dam measuring at 5,000 ft long, 90 ft high and 30 ft wide at the crest, which is 265 ft above sea level. It is vital in the functions of the North Anna Power Station, as its radial gates pass cooling water to the station. The dam’s hydroelectric power plant is located on the west side of the spillway and is supplied with water from a penstock that is 5 ft in diameter. It consists of 2 small open runner turbinegenerators – one with a 775 kW capacity and the other with a 225 kW capacity for a combined total of 1 megawatt of power. The spillway is located in the center of the dam’s body, measuring at 200 ft wide and features 3 main 40-ft wide and 30-ft high radial gates that maintain normal discharge.

3

The North Anna Power Station

Now that you know purpose of the lake and dam, you may be wondering why The North Anna Power Station is so significant. This Dominionowned nuclear power plant in Louisa County utilizes cool water from Lake Anna to condense steam back to water, then returns it back to the lake warmer than when it was taken – hence the “cool side” and “warm side” of Lake Anna. The plant produces 17% of Virginia’s electricity, has an annual economic impact in the state at approximately $711.1 million and also supports 900 jobs in Louisa County. Learn more at DominionEnergy.com.

Many people like to take on the waters via kayak or boat to get a glimpse of the dam up close, but there are also many spots that people can go to take a deep dive into the history of both the dam and the lake. The North Anna Battlefield is the site where it all began and is now a spot where guests can explore trails and learn more about the American Civil War. The dam created the Lake Anna reservoir and the Waste Heat Treatment Facility, both of which are now popular recreational spots. The lake is also surrounded by unique history museums and archive centers, like the Louisa County Historical Society, Spotsylvania County Museum and the Lake Anna Visitor Center. Or you can fully explore on your own at Lake Anna State Park, which is rich in history and features many hiking trails and camping opportunities.

second home | feature

With year-round activities, picturesque views and proximity to several major cities, Lake Anna has become a popular location for a second home. Owning a second home may seem daunting to some. There are options for buyers to turn their second home into an investment property by renting it out most of the time or keeping it as their private getaway. I spoke with local realtors about why you should consider purchasing a second home at Lake Anna.

Liz Wilson Long & Foster

I

have lived at Lake Anna for 33 years and the greatest memories I have are spending time with my husband and our daughter water skiing, boating, jet skiing and sitting on the dock with family and friends. It makes it even better when our daughter makes rewarding comments like “I want my children to have the same wonderful experiences that you gave me.” Lake Anna was once one of the “best kept secrets” for many years, but now, it is the hottest vacation spot for Northern Virginia, Washington D.C., Richmond, Charlottesville and outlying areas for visitors due to its location being approximately an hour and a half away. The real estate market is on fire and investments made purchasing a waterfront or access home have proven to routinely increase in value. There is a high demand for rentals as buyers want to enjoy the Lake Anna experiences and afford a home using the rental income to offset mortgage expenses. Since I’ve moved here 33 years ago, Lake has also grown more commercially with resources like grocery stores, restaurants and entertainment, but it still offers the feeling I love, which is country living. It is a place where people can relax and get out of the hustle and bustle of city living. It’s the perfect place for a second home. Continued on page 20

What Makes Lake Anna A Great Second Home

Angel Hough Long & Foster

aving been born and raised in the Lake Anna area, I can think of several reasons why owning property at Lake Anna is a good investment. First is due to the location. We are centrally located just a short distance from several major cities like Charlottesville, Richmond, Northern Virginia, Washington D.C. and Fredericksburg. The second reason is due to the income possibilities. Property management in this area has become extremely popular over the past decade. People interested in looking for a nice place to host a wedding or have a reunion are drawn to Lake Anna because of its natural beauty. Once they decide to visit, they’ll need to find a place to stay for the weekend or all week. As you can tell, if you are the owner of a rental property, you are looking to make some good money year-round. The final reason a second home in Lake Anna is a good investment is that the area is just beautiful! I can’t think of a better place that I would like to spend my time looking over the lake, a backdrop of greenery against a blue sky with a glimpse of the mountains in the background. Lake Anna gives you a place to escape the city, get away from the noise and just relax and enjoy the scenery. With many local restaurants, you won’t need to worry about cooking or having to travel far for a good meal. With many activities and events in the area, there is always something to do.

I can’t think of a better place that I would like to spend my time looking over the lake.

ou’ve probably already heard the best financial reasons for owning a second home: • Interest rates will never be lower. • Great for a quick getaway. • Possible future rental opportunities. • Great investment. But what I love hearing is, “those were the best times with my family.” It’s the memories. Memories of what you and your children, and hopefully their children, will have of weekends, summers and muchneeded breaks that you can comfortably take within a reasonable driving distance. More opportunities than that occasional vacation. Everyone can get away from the day-to-day worries, especially during these unfortunate times. Lake Anna is perfect for that far away feeling, but so close to home.

ere at Lake Anna, there is truly “something for everyone.” I think that’s what I appreciate most about our area. Lake Anna offers all that you likely expect from a visit to the lake—fishing, boating, swimming, water sports, beautiful sunsets, yet so much more. Lake Anna’s proximity to several cities and towns provides cycling enthusiasts and bike riders of all skill levels the opportunity to see new sights and experience the area’s natural setting. Instead of hopping in your car and driving around, strap on your helmet and discover central Virginia by bike. All of the following trails are less than an hour from Lake Anna and have so much to offer. Take a ride through history or bike through scenic landscapes. Not only is this activity ecofriendly, but it’s also a great way to take in the local scenery and truly connect with the area.

SPOTSYLVANIA BATTLEFIELD

Cycle through history at one of America’s battlefields. The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House was one of the major battles for Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War. While biking along the Bloody Angle Trail and Spotsylvania History Trail is prohibited, cyclists can utilize the Spotsylvania Court House Battlefield Trails Loop. This 4.4-mile loop is perfect for all skill levels. Choose to complete the whole loop or one of the shorter trails. The well-marked path is easy to follow and even features historical markers with monuments nearby.

ORANGE RAMBLE

Take a scenic ride around historic Orange County on the Orange Ramble trail. Starting in the town of Orange, journey through the Rapidan village along the Rapidan river and down to Lake Orange. The entire loop is 32 miles, but you can do a partial ride and still view a number of historical sights and rustic farmlands. This trail is perfect for all skill levels.

LAKE ANNA CENTURY CLASSIC

The Lake Anna Century Classic is one of the more difficult trails in the area. It is recommended for intermediate to expert bikers. The full ride encompasses 102 miles of trails but there are options for shorter rides. The area’s rolling hills and length make this a challenging course, but experienced bikers will enjoy the journey and the potential pitstops in picturesque settings. Cyclists will be able to tour Lake Anna State Park as well as parts of Spotsylvania, Orange, Louisa and Hanover counties. Begin in the small town of Montpelier then set off to experience central Virginia’s breathtaking beauty as you ride by lakes, woodlands and farms.

LAKE ANNA STATE PARK

Located in Spotsylvania, Lake Anna State Park is one of the most popular outdoor facilities in the region. It offers over 15 miles of trails, many of which permit biking. Many cyclists love the Lake Anna State Park Mountain Bike Trail. If you need to take a bike break, they also have several other activity possibilities, like unguarded swimming, lodging and walking trails. The park is open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk.

Spend A Day WITH OVER 200 MILES OF SHORELINE, Lake Anna is the ideal spot for boaters to cruise freely on the water. Visit one of the local boat rental companies or marinas to rent a pontoon boat, jet ski, deck boat or fishing boat to have your own unforgettable boating experience. You’ll quickly discover that there are so many ways to spend the day out on the water. Cast a line into Lake Anna just as the sun begins to peek out over the horizon. The striper, wiper and largemouth bass are waiting to be reeled in by eager anglers at dawn. As the sun shines and the whole family awakens, treat them to one of the thrilling watersports available on Lake Anna. All ages will love soaring across the water in an inner tube. Or, for a more relaxing experience, dock your boat and simply lounge under the sunrays or take a dip. Fire up the grill for dinner as the sun begins to set over Lake Anna. A picnic-packed meal is the perfect way to wind down your day on the water. Or keep the fun going when you pull up your boat to the dock of a local bar or restaurant. There, you can catch up with friends and cool down with an ice-cold beverage. Lake Anna is the second-largest lake located entirely in Virginia, meaning there are plenty of places to explore by boat. Fuel up the tank and then watch the dock disappear on the horizon as you jet away and let yourself discover. Pleasants Landing is a one-of-a-kind recreation area located Lake Anna. This 12-acre peninsula has panoramic views of the south end of the lake, as well as room for several activities. Rent a boat or a jet ski for fun on the water or attend one of the exciting summer events, like movie night, a concert or a festival. Over time, salt has built up naturally in the middle of Lake Anna. This created a sandbar submerged in waist-deep water at the mouth of Gold Mine Creek. The Sandbar is now a destination for locals and guests who are in the know. This unique hangout is perfect for grilling, playing water volleyball or just enjoying a drink with friends and family. Make sure you turn your engine to idle when you get close to this awesome destination. Behind the islands in Boggs Creek and across from the North Anna Power Station lie a chain of islands that locals call “the Bahamas” and are perfect for swimming, grilling, playing games, hanging out with friends or just relaxing. Soak up the sun or take a walk and enjoy the sand between your toes. “The Bahamas” has been considered one of the nicest beaches Lake Anna has because it is a secret haven. When the North Anna Power Station uses water from Lake Anna, that water is returned slightly warmer than when it was taken out. Venture out to one of Lake Anna’s cooling lagoons and experience these warm temperatures, which are typically 14 degrees warmer than typical lake water. May-October is the peak season for recreational use of the lagoons because that’s when the water temperature is at its highest.

FISHING on the Lake

From Spring through Winter, Lake Anna Offers Fishing for Every Season LakeAnnaGuide.com

M

ost anglers refer to the different sides of Lake Anna as the “hot side” and the “cold side.” Although there are fishing opportunities on the hot side, you must have access to one of the private ramps located on that side. The cold side, however, has several public ramps that can be used 365 days per year. There are several different species of fish that anglers can pursue on Lake Anna, with the top three being Largemouth Bass, Crappie and Striper.

By Chris Craft

LARGEMOUTH BASS The Largemouth Bass gets the most attention; many anglers visit Lake Anna in March and April looking for that bass of a lifetime. Lake Anna does not have a minimum size requirement to keep a bass; most anglers practice catch and release, as they are a popular tournament fish. If you do keep some, the creel limit is five per day, per angler. A trophy fish by Virginia guidelines is a fish that weighs eight pounds and/or measures 22 inches in length. The lake record was caught on March 20, 1985, and my personal best weighing in at nine pounds, one ounce was caught on March 13, 2012. So, it can be said that the best time to catch a true giant largemouth from Lake Anna is during March. There are many ways to catch bass as they

32

LAKE ANNA GUIDE | 2023/2024

move from their winter hideouts. In early March, when the water first starts to warm up, they will slowly start making a move to shallower water. Keep in mind that deep water nearby is a must. My best overall bait this time of year is a suspending jerkbait. As we move toward the end of the month, and the water warms even more, the bass will become more aggressive. You can now fish your suspending jerkbaits much faster and even move on to other baits such as spinnerbaits, squarebill crankbaits and soft jerkbaits. As the full moon in April approaches, the bass start feeding heavy in preparation for the upcoming spawn. They will take a variety of baits and be very aggressive doing so. This is a great time to put your top water lures to work. Large walking baits, poppers and buzz-

baits are all great choices for this task, as they will all draw explosive and violent strikes. Now we are moving into summer patterns. The fish will start to pull out of the shallows and move out with the increasing boat traffic and warmer water temperatures. Deeper brush piles, rock piles, boat docks and bridge pilings will all hold numbers of fish in the summertime. They will stay in these areas all summer long until the water temperature starts to drop back off in the fall—usually by midOctober they are shallow again, as this is the beginning of the fall feeding frenzy. Small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, hard jerkbaits and soft jerkbaits are all great bait fish imitators and will catch fish for you. As the winter months close in, those anglers

fishing | on the lake brave enough to outlast the elements can be rewarded with giant bass and heavy bags to bring onto the scales. Vertical jigging is one of the best ways to catch them at this time of year. Learning your electronic devices is a must for this type of fishing.

CRAPPIE The Black Crappie, also known as specks, freckles and silver perch, comes in a close second to the Largemouth Bass for Lake Anna anglers. These tasty panfish are hearty fighters and plentiful throughout Lake Anna— though up lake has better fishing than down lake. For a crappie to be considered a trophy in Virginia, they must be either two pounds or 15 inches. Though there is no minimum size on crappie in Lake Anna, there is a 25 fish per day, per angler creel limit. Once March rolls around, the crappie start making their move toward the shallows; usually they are the first fish to spawn in the spring. Crappies are very aggressive throughout the spawn and will take a variety of artificial baits and colors as well as minnows. Many anglers use small minnows rigged under a slip bobber to catch them; I, on the other hand, prefer to employ two-inch curly tail grubs rigged on a one-sixteenth ounce jig head. After the spawn is over in mid-May, they will start retreating back to deeper water for the summer months; I usually leave them alone for this period of time. During summer, they’re around deep boat docks, deep bridge pilings, deep rock piles and some will just suspend over deep water. The most popular place to catch them during the summer is around the many

bridge pilings throughout the lake. A small minnow on a one-sixteenth or one-eighth-ounce jighead will produce the best results. The most important part of crappie fishing is the rod, reel and line. To thoroughly enjoy crappie fishing, a lite or ultra lite rod is a must. A six-pound test line is really about as heavy as you will want to use. The best part about crappie fishing is that these are great angling fish for kids. As summer ends and fall begins, they will start to follow bait balls into the creeks, and they will set up an ambush around the many boat docks. A little more skill is involved in fall crappie fishing; they will set up as far as they can under boat docks, and skipping or shooting your grub is a must. If the water level in the lake is down about a foot, it makes it much easier to get your bait to the fish. Fall is now over and wintertime is setting in. The water temperature Lake Anna’s Premier is now in the low 40s and the fish have pulled out of the shallows. Some fish will relocate to deep brush piles and back to the bridge pilings, but most Large, Comfortable boats fishing up to 18 rods. will just suspend Check out our daily catches over deep water on my journal at and follow the www.JimHemby.com bait balls around. Email: [email protected]

STRIPED BASS The Striped Bass, or striper, fishing on Lake Anna has gotten better over the past several years and many more anglers are pursuing them. Though we do not see many trophy-class fish caught, we do see many in the 10-pound-plus range, but most are an average of five to seven pounds. For a landlocked, fresh water striper to be considered a trophy in Virginia, they have to be at least 20 pounds or 37 inches. In order to keep a striper on Lake Anna, the minimum length has to be 20 inches, and the creel limit is four per day, per angler. There are several ways to catch them, such as trolling, live bait, vertical jigging and casting artificial lures to them. If you plan on using live bait, plan on getting out of bed very early and trying your luck at attracting bait to a light hung under a bridge and throwing a net on them. Native bait—Gizzard Shad or Blue Back Herring—is by far the best.

In March, you can find me chasing striper up in the two river arms of the lake. They are usually feeding heavy on small black crappie at this time of year, so my bait of choice is a suspending jerkbait that I have painted in a color we call “tuxedo purple.” As April rolls around, you can locate the schools of fish up lake in shallow water. Try casting a broken back redfin to them, and be sure to fish the bait all the way back to the boat. Summertime striper fishing can be really great at first light; the fish will be aggressively chasing bait in the mid-lake area until the sun gets high enough to penetrate the water. Once the sun is up and the feed is over, you can still catch them by using your electronics to locate the deep schools. Another popular way to catch summertime striper is by trolling artificial lures. Deep diving redfins with a bucktail trailer seem to be the most popular. As we head into fall, the striper will begin to follow the bait movement up

Striper Guide Service

lake where you can use birds to give away the location of the schools. Cast a minimum of 100 yards from them while you move into position with your trolling motor. A four-inch paddle tail swimbait rigged on a one-fourth-ounce jig head is my all-time favorite lure. A sensitive rod is a must for this; most of the strikes will be very subtle and a too heavy of a rod will hide these strikes from you. You can chase striper like this all the way through the winter as well. Once the water temperatures drop below 40 degrees, the bite will be very slow; that is, if they are feeding at all. Another species to stretch your fishing line is the “wiper”, this fish is a hybrid between a Striped Bass and a White Bass. They are strong and plentiful, but like the striper they must be 20 inches long to keep. The daily creel limit is four per person per day, this is combined with the striper.

LAKE ANNA GUIDE | 2023/2024

O

VER THE YEARS HOMES ON LAKE ANNA HAVE CHANGED DRAMATICALLY. When the lake was formed in the early ‘70s most dwellings built on the lake were simple weekend cottages approximately 1500-2000 square feet. I have worked on many of these structures over the years. Many of which I call “whole house transformations.” I have taken friends to some of these before and after jobs to which many would reply “I’ve not been here before,” to which I would usually reply –“Oh yes you have!”. Most of these clients had owned the property for years and were not interested in moving or building new. As they reach retirement age they are looking to expand as they love their property’s view, area, neighbors, etc. This is where I come in. I listen to their dreams and desires. Most want new larger kitchens, baths and owner suites. Some can visualize, some cannot. To pull these additions off, I usually recommend new siding and roofing to blend the old with the new. I find this type of job very rewarding as I document the progress from start to finish. New homes today are generally much larger now, ranging from 5,000 to over 10,000 square feet. Some of the amenities requested include: Interior-large vaulted ceilings, multiple fireplaces, large custom tiled showers, spas, saunas, game rooms, accent lighting, smart home design, whole home generators, etc. Exteriors – stone veneers, prefinished cement sidings, metal roofs, high performance windows, doors and glass; fire pits, outside dryspace patios that include kitchens, bars and sitting areas; composite decking and railings. All maintenance free - after all when you come to the lake you want to enjoy and play, not work on the house! Lake living is continuing to evolve and I still believe. “If you’re lucky enough to live on the lake, you’re lucky enough!”

LAKE ANNA GUIDE | 2023/2024

Experience Matters!

Lake Anna-Spotsylvania Long & Foster At our office, we’re more than just a team of professional real estate agents. We’re a true part of the community—your friends, your neighbors, your colleagues. We shop, dine and play at the neighborhood attractions. We volunteer with area nonprofits. We send our kids to the local schools and enjoy all that our community has to offer. We’re also neighborhood experts, who work and live for the love of home. And for us, home is here—at our office, in our community, in our backyard. So whether you’re buying, selling, renting or just looking, the team at our office is here for you. We’ll be your trusted advisor, your practiced negotiator and your skilled house-hunter. From finding or listing a property to insuring and settling on it, we’ll diligently work for you every step of your journey home.
