Winter

SPORTS

Whether you’re a winter sport

daredevil or only in it for the

mulled wine, dust off your

mittens for these alternative

winter sports. Give standard

skiing and snowboarding a wide berth with a few frosty

favourites perfect for beginners, or test your snowy

sport expertise by scaling ice or soaring up high. There’s an

avalanche of choice, so wrap up warm and hit the snow.

SNOWKITING IN THE NORTHEASTERN USA This sport will keep accomplished skiers and snowboarders on their toes –

literally. Snowkiting gives you the sensation of weightless skiing, with a power kite

speeding the snowkiter along or lifting them above

the ground. The experienced (and brave) can

also spin into mid-air acrobatics.

Fun Alternative:

SKATING Among the most favorite winter

activities around the world! In

the cities locals and guests can

hit colorful and entertaining

skating rinks, where music, hot

wine and happy people spin

around. Even sunny towns like

San Diego cannot resist and get a

skating rink during the Christmas

period!

ICE SKATING HISTORY Ice skating probably developed in

Scandinavia as early as 1000 bce, the

first skates being made from shank

or rib bones of elk, oxen, reindeer,

and other animals. It is not known

when the metal runner was

introduced, but early Dutch prints

depict skates with metal blades.

LUGE This sport is one of the favorite

among the adrenaline fanatics.

Slide down the track in a mind-

blowing speed. The beginners

get a bigger sledge and don’t

have to go with their head

down, so it isn’t as dangerous

and scary.

Place to visit

GREECE Probably one of the most well-

known places to visit in Greece,

Santorini is the diamond of the

Aegean. Thousands are drawn to

the beauty of this island every

year and leave knowing that there

is nowhere else like it.

Take a dip in the turquoise

waters, walk around the beautiful

villages and dine in the fine

restaurants, Santorini will steal

your heart. From its volcanic

beaches and whitewashed houses

to its incredible sunsets and

scenery, Santorini is most

definitely one of the best places

to visit in Greece

Must see attractions

in Thailand Best city for

backpackers Bangkok is one of those cities that never gets old. No matter how many times you've been, you'll always discover something new and exciting to see, do, and eat.

Sure, Bangkok’s Thanon Khao San (Khao San Road) is a bizarre fantasy of what the backpackercreated hippy trail used to be, but it’s a must-see stop before you head off to explore Wat Pho and other temples on Ko Ratanakosin and the mercantile marvel that is Chatuchak Weekend Market. Load up on street food sà·đé (satay) sticks and enjoy the exuberant atmosphere. It's got a near perfect mix of food, culture, nightlife, shopping, and affordability that's unmatched anywhere in Southeast Asia. SPAIN It seems as though Spain's

geography was specifically carved

out for adventure. Aside from its

world-class beaches, the country

is home to 15 national parks,

including five in the Canary and

Balearic Islands. So if you're

looking to explore volcanos, sand

dunes, marshes, or mountain

ranges, you'll be set in this

country.

UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thousands of limestone islands sit within this bay in the Gulf of Tonkin, eroded into jagged pinnacles by wind and water action over millennia.

With the bay's scenery best seen by boat, this is prime cruising territory. Opt for at least an overnight tour to see Halong Bay's iconic views as a day trip doesn't do it justice. There are plenty of caves in the bay that can be entered including the Hang Sung Sot, with three mammoth caverns, and the Hang Dao Go, with superbly weird stalagmites and stalactites. For most people though, the highlight is simply cruising amid the karsts and soaking up the changing scenery of pinnacles as you pass by.
