Selection and Author: Never Not Love You Directed by Antoinette Jadaone

I. Background of the Text Never Not Love You, a story about two young couple being carefree and reckless about their life’s decision, their love was tested when their dreams and goals took them to different paths. It shows their journey on how they develop themselves with the environment they are in for the following years of their relationship. The development of the film’s first title was Five Years Later then changed into Here’s to the Fools, but later converted for the final title which is Never Not Love You. The shooting location of this film was in Makati CBD, Zambales, (Philippines) and London, produce by the companies Viva Films; Project 8 Corner San Joaquin Projects starring James Reid and Nadine Lustre. Never Not Love You made it into international screening in some of the selected theatre from the US, Middle East, it was also screened at the international film festival of India. This magnificent film was only written by Antoinette Jadaone, a filmmaker of some of the movies that all of us adored such as; That Thing Called Tadhana (2014), Love You to the Stars and Back (2017), and Alone/together (2019). She is a resident director of ABS-CBN Entertainments and Star Cinema, also a Pod caster of a talk show Ang Walng Kwentang Podcast with JP Habac her fellow director. She Graduated from University of the Philippines with the degree of Broadcast Communications then shift as a major in film industry, then her career started as a director in 2010 until now. Her film Never Not Love You was critiqued as the most grounded romance of all of her films that she created, the Film style that is present are techniques like; sound design, dialogue, cinematography, and editing.

II. Literary Devices, Techniques, and Story Elements For the literary devices, I noticed that they’ve used the Irony device in the climax part of the movie between the arguments of the main characters. As for the narrative techniques in the film they included some flashbacks of the two lover's sweet moments, when they realized that they were apart from each other. From my observation they also used deus ex machina in the first part of the film during their first meeting, because Gio Smith was there to help Joanne Candelariaas in a difficult situation. The setting of this story takes place in Makati, Philippines and later on London, the main characters of the film are Gio Smith who is a round character and Joanne Candelariaas who is also a round character Starred by Nadine Lustre and James Reid. identified the two characters as round characters because they’ve grown and developed along their journey, because of the relationship they are in. They have their realizations in life of what and not to prioritize. The conflict of the story is about them having different perspectives and paths with their individual careers, also one of the main characters is being unreasonable and lack of understanding, For the resolution of the story they realized that they need to give each other some time to understand their situations. the point of view of the story is first person, while the theme is a Love Story. III. Literary Theory – (Feminism, Post-Colonialism, Post-Modernism) First of is feminism, where the feminine protagonist has a role among the society or community. It is how she revolves on her surrounding upon the activities and scenarios of the movies. She responds to the society with reinforcing role in some of the situations. The Post-Colonialism in the movie is where the two-protagonist work by the influence of each other and desperation. It is where the woman tries to convince her partner to take the work opportunity in other country, to have a stable job and to be able to support himself and other financial problems. While the woman trusted to his partner and applied to the same country where her partner will be for them to be together. The last theory that is included is post-Modernism because the character’s situations in the film are not stable through out the story due to misunderstandings and problems. For Marxism in the story the two characters does not have big difference with each other in their classes which is middle class, they are also struggling to cope with the society, but they are not literally poor or rich. But near the end part of the movie, they have successfully achieved their goals and be able to change their lifestyle before.
