Meeting customer demands

Paratus to launch largest data facility in Nam Paratus Namibia is investing N$123 million to construct the Armada Data Centre facility.

P

aratus Namibia will be launching its carrier neutral Data Centre (DC) facility in Windhoek, Namibia in August 2022. This new facility, named Armada Data Centre by the company, will be the first carrier neutral and the largest DC facility in Namibia. It will complement the Equiano Cable, which lands in Namibia in the next few months and for which Paratus has already built the landing station. Paratus is investing N$123-million to construct the Armada Data Centre facility, which is built on the Brakwater Campus and houses two separate colocation data halls (DC1 and DC2), each of which are supported by two

separate energy centre pairs. Housed in 734m², a total of 240 cabinets will provide essential state-of-the-art colocation options, data, and cloud services. Armada will help meet the ever-increasing customer demand for these services and, as existing facilities in Namibia are at capacity, fill the market void. This demand falls squarely in line with global and continental requirements for complex colocation services. ResearchandMarkets.com reports that the African data centre market was worth US$2 billion in 2020. The Arizton. com market report states the data centre market saw investments of USD2.663-million in

Paratus, which has already built two DC facilities in Angola and one in Zambia in recent years, has already con-

firmed 55% occupancy of one of the two Armada Data Halls in Namibia. Technological advancement Chief Operations Officer of Paratus, Schalk Erasmus explains: “Our customers understand that technological advancement, in the form of big data, cloud services and artificial intelligence (AL), is critical for their future success. They need an independent, secure, and highly sophisticated DC facility. The Paratus Armada DC will store and protect client data 24/7; house and physically protect all equipment and computer systems; handle the migration from off-site to the data centre; provide back-up power generation; and offer an array of add-on services and features.” Although Paratus operates

France is to introduce a rebate of 0.15 euros (US$0.16) per litre of transport fuel to help drivers cope with soaring pump prices, Prime Minister Jean Castex said in an interview with daily newspaper Le Parisien. The measure, to apply for four months from April 1, is expected to cost the government just over 2 billion euros, he said. Retail gasoline and diesel prices soared to record highs

in many countries across the world this week as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine added to market tensions, after economies had begun recovering from the coronavirus pandemic. A gesture of support for French motorists had been flagged by President Emmanuel Macron, who is campaigning for a second term in elections next month. In the interview published

on Saturday, Castex said the rebate would cover households as well as lorry transport and farmers. The measure, which he said fuel distributors should reinforce with their own effort to cut retail prices, would save a motorist 9 euros on a 60-litre tank, Castex added. Macron has said his government has already spent 20 billion euros a year to moderate gasoline and power costs. - Reuters

As Ukraine war rages

Rising food prices shake North Africa Food prices were on the rise in North Africa before Russia invaded Ukraine more than two weeks ago. FRANCOISE KADRI

H

ouseholds across North Africa are rushing to stock up on flour, semolina and other staples as food prices rise following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, both key wheat exporters to the region. The scramble is worse coming just weeks before the start of the holy month of Ramadan, when

Muslims traditionally break a dawn-to-dusk fast with lavish family meals. Tunisia, Morocco and Libya, along with several other Arab countries, import much of their wheat from Ukraine and Russia. Some fear the Russian invasion could lead to hunger and unrest, with memories of how rising food prices played a role in several Arab uprisings last decade.

In one supermarket in the Tunisian capital, the shelves were bare of flour or semolina, and only three packs of sugar sat on a shelf near a sign that read: “One kilo per customer, please”. Store managers said the problem was “panic buying”, not shortages. Shopper Houda Hjeij, who said she hadn’t been able to find rice or flour for two weeks, blamed the authorities. “ With the war in Ukraine, they did not think ahead,” the 52-yearold housewife in Tunis said.

Bulk-buying ahead of Ramadan, which is expected to start in early April this year, is common in Muslim countries. But some say the war in Ukraine has sparked a shopping frenzy. Hedi Baccour, of Tunisia’s union of supermarket owners, said daily sales of semolina a staple across North Africa used in dishes of couscous have jumped by “700 percent” in recent days. Sugar sales are up threefold as Tunisian’s stockpile basic foodstuffs, said Baccour, who insisted there were no food shortages. Each day pensioner Hedi Bouallegue, 66, makes the round of grocery shops in his Tunis neighbourhood to stock up on products like cooking oil and semolina.

“I am even ready to pay double the price,” he told AFP. Baker Slim Talbi said he had been paying three times as much for flour than in the past, “although the real effects of the (Russia-Ukraine) war have not hit us yet”. “I am worried” about the future, Talbi added, citing Tunisia’s dependence on Ukrainian wheat. Tunisia imports almost half of the soft wheat used to make bread from Ukraine. Authorities

say the North African country has enough supplies to last three months. Oil-rich Libya gets about 75 percent of its wheat from Russia and Ukraine. Morocco also relies heavily on the same source for supplies. Algeria, Africa’s second-largest wheat consumer after Egypt does not import any from the two warring eastern European countries, instead sourcing it from Argentina or France, according to the bureau of cereals. “There won’t be any shortages wheat shipments regularly arrive at Algiers port,” said harbour official Mustapha, who declined to give

his full name. Despite reassurances, panicked citizens recently ransacked semolina stocks in Algeria’s eastern Kabylie region. “War in Ukraine and all the semolina warehouses have been stormed,” Mouh Benameur, who lives in the area, posted on Facebook. Food prices were on the rise in North Africa before Russia invaded Ukraine more than two weeks ago. Moroccan official Fouzi Lekjaa pointed to a global economic pick-up following a pandemic-induced slump. “With the recovery, the market price of cereals and oil products

rose,” he said.

Climate change

Mourad, 37, a shopper in the Moroccan capital Rabat, said climate change and drought the worst in his country in decades were also to blame. To keep prices affordable and avoid a repeat of bread riots that erupted in the 1980s, Tunisia subsidises staples like sugar, semolina and pasta. For the past decade, it has set the price of a baguette loaf of bread at six US cents. Algeria plans to scrap subsidies on basic goods, but has not yet done so. After a truck drivers’ strike this week, Morocco said it was mulling fuel subsidies for the sector “to protect citizens’ purchasing power and keep prices at a reasonable level,” according to government spokesman Mustapha Baitas.

“I am even ready to pay double the price.” Hedi Bouallegue Pensioner

In Libya, which found itself with two rival prime ministers this month, sparking fears of renewed violence, food prices are also hitting the roof. At a Tripoli wholesale market, shopper Saleh Mosbah blamed “unscrupulous merchants”. “They always want to take advantage when there is a conflict,” he said. Summaya, a shopper in her 30s who declined to give her full name, blamed the government. “They reassure people by saying there is enough wheat,” she said, carrying two five-kilo bags of flour. “I don’t believe them.”

enya lifted its remaining Covid19 restrictions on Friday, including a ban on large indoor gatherings such as religious services and a requirement to present a negative Covid-19 test for arriving air passengers. Though Kenyans should continue heeding public health measures such as handwashing and social dis-

tancing, face masks are no longer mandatory in public and all quarantine measures for confirmed Covid-19 cases are halted with immediate effect, Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe told a news conference. For the past month the East African country’s Covid-19 test positivity rate has remained below 1%, he added, attributing this to the rising number of Kenyans opting to get vaccinated. In November, the government announced that proof of vaccination would be required by December 21 to access schools, transport, state offices, hotels, bars, restaurants, national parks and wildlife reserves. CHILDHOOD CANCER

[email protected]

Obesity Maternal obesity and diabetes may increase the risk of cancer in offspring, according to research published in JNCI Cancer Spectrum.

Childhood cancer care in Africa hit hard by pandemic Nearly 30,000 children in sub-Saharan Africa are believed to have died from cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Health tip Avoid acidic foods

D

rastic measures to prevent coronavirus spread, and heightened focus by health systems on response, led to disruptions in other essential health services on the continent. Cancer screening and treatment, including for childhood cancers, were hit especially hard. A WHO survey found screening was affected in 46% of countries, while 13% reported a more than 50% disruption. “We estimate that more than 28 000 children died of cancer in sub-Saharan Africa in 2020. This is truly heartbreaking as childhood cancers are curable if detected early and comprehensive care provided,” said Dr. Jean-Marie Dangou, Noncommunicable Diseases Programme Coordinator at the WHO Regional Office. In Africa, the childhood cancer survival rate is around 20%, compared to more than 80% in high-income countries. As early diagnosis improves chances of survival, WHO stressed that significant improvements can be made in the lives of children with cancer by identifying the disease early and avoiding delays in care. The UN agency fears a significant backlog in screening and treatment due to the pandemic could lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment. This would put further strain on Africa’s overburdened medical resources and increase avoidable cancer deaths. Improve early detection “Substantial investment in cancer prevention and care, including quality training of medical professionals, must be made if we

are to avert cancer deaths and cases, especially among children, in our region,” said Dr. Dangou. “As individuals, we must take the initiative to better understand the childhood cancer warning signs to improve early detection and treatment.” Naomi Otua from Ghana makes regular visits to her 10-year-old grandson, James, who lives in the Central Region of the country. On one of her trips, she noticed something was seriously wrong as the boy had jaundiced eyes and had lost a significant amount of weight. James was eventually diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, the most common form of childhood cancer. He is among the roughly 400 000 children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer every

year globally. James began chemotherapy, which he has continued for the past three months. “His condition has greatly improved,” said Ms. Otua, adding “I am very happy about that.” Prohibitive costs While 80% of childhood cancers are curable, “this is dependent on early detection and progressive treatment,” according to Professor Lorna Awo Renner, Head of the Paediatric Oncology Unit at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, where James was treated. Worldwide, most children with cancer live in developing countries like Ghana, but only around 20% to 30% receive treatment, often due to cost. In Ghana, cancer treatment is not covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme. The average cost to treat childhood cancer is about US$1 000, and up to US$7 000 for leukaemia, which is far beyond the reach of many citizens. “In Ghana, about 50% of patients used to abandon treatment halfway due to lack of funds. However, this figure has been reduced to 15% with support from a number of benevolent individuals and organizations,” said Professor Awo Renner. Home again Back in 2018, WHO announced a new Global Initiative for Childhood Cancers (GICC) and Ghana was among six countries selected to receive support for its implementation. One of the major strategic GICC partners is St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the United States, whose financial support has helped improve childhood cancer care in Ghana, Senegal and Zambia. “Working closely with the Ghanaian government, we have helped to build and sustain a high quality national childhood cancer programme with a target of achieving at least 60% survival rate by 2030,” said Dr. Francis Kasolo, WHO Representative in the country. The UN agency has also provided technical support to health workers at Korle-Bu

Teaching Hospital, in addition to monitoring and surveillance tools. For Professor Renner, sending children back home once they have been declared cancerfree provides a great sense of fulfilment. She remains hopeful that James will soon be able to beat the disease. “These children can still go on to lead full lives,” she said. “I see it – Source: news.un.org happen all the time.”

STATS Common cancer symptoms in children include: • Feeling very tired all the time, with pale skin. • Repeated infections or infections that don’t get better. • Persistent flu-like symptoms. • Unexplained or excessive bleeding. • Bruising easily or pinpoint round spots on the skin (petechiae).

FOXCONN, UNIMICRON CUT OUTPUT Apple suppliers Foxconn and Unimicron Technology Corp said on Monday they have suspended operations in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, after the tech hub imposed strict measures to stem a Covid-19 outbreak. Shenzhen, known as China’s Silicon Valley, is carrying out mass testing after dozens of new local cases were recorded in the southern city. Officials have suspended public transport and urged people to work at home this week as much as possible. Foxconn, formally known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, said its Shenzen operations would be suspended until further notice, adding it would deploy backup plants to reduce the disruption to production. Two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that Foxconn and its subsidiaries’ operations in Shenzhen would be suspended for the first half of the week. One of the people said the government was allowing companies to operate if they could create a “closed management” system where employees would live and

work in a bubble, cut off from the wider public. Such a system was in place during

the Beijing Winter Olympics. - Reuters
