“Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages rocketed by 12.4% year-on-year, only slightly down from 12.5% in November.”

Credit uptake to remain restrained-IJG Growth in private sector credit extension stood at 3.7% year-on-year at the end of November 2022 compared to 3.5% at the end of October 2022.

P

rivate sector credit extension (PSCE) is expected to remain restrained over the short term and into 2023 due to rising borrowing costs and tepid economic activity dampening demand for new credit, IJG Securities said. “We also see little on the supply side that would ignite demand for credit over this period,” IJG added. The repo rate currently stands at 6.75%, and the prime lending rate at 10.5%. The Bank of Namibia’s first monetary policy announcement for the year is expected to take place 15 February. The South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB’s) first MPC meeting for 2023 is scheduled to take place on 26 January. Fin24 recently reported that the South African inflation expectations rose for the next two years, affirming predictions that the central bank will extend its most aggressive rate-hiking cycle in at least two decades. Average inflation expectations for the year increased to

6.1% in the fourth quarter from 5.9% previously, according to a survey conducted by the Stellenbosch-based Bureau for Economic Research. The South African Reserve Bank’s monetary policy committee targets price growth in a band of 3% to 6% and prefers to anchor expectations close to the midpoint of that range. The Bank of Namibia does not target inflation. Inflation in Namibia averaged 6.1% in 2022 and stood at 6.9% in December 2022. Annual consumer price inflation in South Africa cooled to 7.2% in December, down from 7.4% in November 2022. “December saw Namibia’s annual inflation rate continuing to trend lower with the print falling below 7.0% for the first time since July 2022 and steadily moving back towards the upper end of the SARB’s target range,” IJG said. IJG’s inflation model currently forecasts Namibia’s annual inflation rate to continue to steadily slow during the course of 2023, before reaching around 4.1% at the end of the year.

We also see little on the supply side that would ignite demand for credit over this period. IJG Securities According to the Bank of Namibia latest credit figures, growth in private sector credit extension stood at 3.7% yearon-year at the end of November 2022 compared to 3.5% at the end of October 2022. The slight increase in PSCE growth is explained by a rise in demand for credit by the household sector, coupled with a growth in credit by corporations in the fishing, energy, and manufacturing sectors. PSCE rose by N$587.0 million or 0.5% month-onmonth in November, bringing the cumulative credit outstanding to N$110.2 billion after normalising for interbank swaps accounted in nonresident private sector claims, IJG said. - [email protected]

Fuel prices in SA may fall next month HELENA WASSERMAN fter a steep fall in January, petrol and diesel prices are currently on track for more cuts in February, the latest information from the Central Energy Fund shows. However, recent strong gains in the oil price and a weaker rand may put price cuts at risk. The fuel prices are usually adjusted on the first Wednesday of a month and determined by the price of oil and the rand-dollar exchange rate. Based on the latest oil and rand prices, the fund’s data shows that the price of 95 unleaded petrol could be cut by around 14c in February, with 93 petrol due for a 7c decrease. Diesel prices could decline by between 37c and 49c a litre, based on current estimates. This could bring the Gauteng diesel price to below R21 for the first time since March. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine triggered a spike in oil prices since February.

Petrol is already back at pre-invasion levels. However, gains in the oil price and the dollar before the end of the month could still thwart fuel price declines. On Tuesday, Brent rose by more than 2% to above US$86 per barrel following stronger-thanexpected Chinese economic growth data.

In addition, the rand came under pressure this week. After reaching R16.70/$ last week, on Tuesday it was trading around R17.20. At the start of January, the petrol price (both 93 and 95 unleaded) was cut by R2.06 a litre, while diesel was lowered by between R2.69 and R2.81. - Fin24

Analysts expected 8% growth on that basis to €5.73 billion. COMPANY NEWS IN BRIEF

SPAR CEO BRETT BOTTEN TO RETIRE AT MONTH-END Retail group Spar said on Tuesday CEO Brett Botten will be retiring at the end of January as part of shakeup which will also see former chair Graham O’Connor leave the board after at the group’s annual meeting in February. Phumla Mnganga will step down as an independent non-executive director of after the meeting on 14 February after serving for 17 years, the group said, while it has also appointed two new independent directors with immediate effect.

O’Connor stepped down as chair in December, which followed a spate of negative publicity for the group, including allegations that it inflated the price of a store in Johannesburg. Criminal complaints were also filed against senior executives of Spar, including O’Connor, in December amid allegations that the grocer falsely claimed in 2019 it was owed money in order to gain control over certain supermarkets. In addition, News24 reported that two “fictitious” loans have been uncovered in a report compiled on behalf of

Spar’s board, which was looking into allegations of unfair treatment and racism. The governance of the company has also come under fire in some quarters after O’Connor became Spar chairperson in March 2021, a month after retiring as CEO, which is at odds with the King Code’s recommendation of at least a three-year break. Spar has defended the independence of the board, saying previously it had extensively debated the merits of appointing the former CEO to head of the board, while it has also said the negative publicity stemmed from

a small minority of its store owners. A network of independent retailers that trade under Spar’s brand and are supplied on a voluntary basis through its distribution centres, and it serves more than 2 500 stores across southern Africa. Jean Pierre Verster, CEO of Protea Capital Asset Management, said

Tuesday’s announcements that both the CEO and the previous chair were departing from Spar indicated that the retailer was “cleaning house after some recent revelations of corporate governance concerns”. FNB portfolio manager Wayne McCurrie agreed that Spar had faced a great deal of bad press recently. He said there

were also “allegations of discrimination by Spar towards certain franchisees based on race and location”. While Spar had hired a legal firm to look into the matter, said McCurrie, it could not find any systematic proof of any discrimination based on race and location. However, by the grocer’s own admission, said

McCurry, it had admitted there were faults in the way it did conduct its business and would be looking to address them. While it had not specified what these faults were, he said these types of admissions did not augur well for the group, which had also facied questions about the independence of its -Fin24 chair.

Transport costs were almost 14% higher in December 2022 compared to a year ago, even after sizeable cuts in the price of diesel at the start of the month. Following further declines at the start of January, the petrol price is back to levels last seen before the invasion of Ukraine triggered an oil price surge. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) only expects inflation to “sus-

tainably” move back to its targeted level of 4.5% by the second quarter of 2024. With inflation still far above its target level, traders expect the Reserve Bank to increase interest rates when the monetary policy committee (MPC) meets again on January 26th. The prime rate has already moved from 7% in November 2021 to 10.5% currently, as the MPC attempts to cool inflation. Real People. Real Returns.

Confidence among companies in their growth prospects has dropped the most since the 2007-08 global financial crisis due to rising inflation, macroeconomic volatility and geopolitical conflicts, a survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers showed. With 73% of chief executives around the world expecting global economic growth to decline over the next 12 months, this gloomy view is the most pessimistic CEOs have been since PwC began the survey more than a decade ago, it said on Monday. The “Big Four” auditor also said that it marked a significant departure from optimistic outlooks in 2021 and 2022. The survey also found 60% of CEOs do not plan to reduce the size of their workforce in the next 12 months, while 80% do not plan to reduce staff remuneration in order to retain talent and mitigate workforce attrition rates. The companies that did well in 2022 are likely to see a more

challenging year ahead, PwC Global Chairman Bob Moritz told the Reuters Global Markets Forum (GMF) on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos.

Innovation Nearly 40% of more than 4 400 chief executives surveyed said their companies would not be economically viable over the next decade unless they innovated and transformed at a faster pace. “It is both the timeframe and magnitude that is surprising - how do I survive the next two to three years, and make my way through a challenging macroeconomic environment, while transforming my organisation to be fit for growth over the next 10 years,” Moritz said. The survey also found that companies are cutting costs, even as many do not plan to reduce headcount or compensation in the fight to retain talent. -Fin24
