BRAZIL FESTA JUNINA

WHAT IS IT? ●

Festa Junina is a Brazilian holiday celebrated from June 1st to July 30th.

The festival is meant to welcome the end of the rainy season, the simple rural life, and new harvest.

●

People celebrate this holiday by often dressing up as a colorful, exaggerated version of country folk or “caipiras”. Traditionally, girls wear dresses, boots, and sometimes braid their hair. Boys will usually wear a straw hat, jeans, and a flannel.

THINGS TO DO

There is a dance called “quadrilha” which is a wedding dance for a mock bride and groom. These two are usually the center of the dance, wearing different colored clothes than the rest of the participants. The dance is performed by people of all ages, ranging from trained dancers to young children.

The food is often corn based like sweet corn cake, an oatmeal like food called “canjica”, and bolo de fubá.

A large bonfire is usually set up as the months of June and July are the coldest in Brazil.

Children enjoy playing with small packages of bombs, firecrackers, and fireworks around this time.

In towns, it is very common to see colorful banners strung over streets.

More about the holiday! On making this day the proposal for the creation of this date was authored by the federal deputy from Rio de Janeiro, Galdino do Valle Filho. This date was mark so children get receive presents and gifts for their special day. I believe that it’s good to have a children day to show them how love they are and special as well.

The lady sent Juan Diego to the bishop and the bishop’s job was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared at. However, the bishop did not believe Juan Diego and wanted a sign. On December 12, 1531 the lady provided roses for Juan to carry back to the bishop within his tilma. When Juan Diego opened his tilma in the bishop’s presence, the roses fell to the ground and the bishop sank to his knees. Natal Christmas in Brazil is a very big holiday. Most Brazilians are Christian or Catholic, so the celebration is way bigger than most of the other holidays. In Brazil, everyone usually throws or attends one of the biggest parties of the year on Christmas Eve. They don’t usually celebrate it on Christmas day.

Christmas traditions Brazilians have many ways of celebrating Christmas. On Christmas Eve, people go to a party, or they attend a church. People usually have family dinners, and drink and eat really good food in celebration. Lots of people pray for Jesus Christ, and people visit Christ the Redeemer. Brazilian children go to sleep after family dinner to hope for a visit from Papai Noel in the morning on Christmas day.

Food Food is one of the most important parts of a Brazilian celebration. On christmas, they go all out. The most common foods eaten on this day would be churrasco, arroz com farofa, salpicão, strogonoff, Feijoada, e salgadinhos. For dessert we would have Musse, Pudim, qualquer tipo de bolo, brigadeiro, stuff like that. Brazilians would eat a huge family dinner around 9 p.m and party afterwards.

Christmas day At around midnight, when christmas starts. The family would gather around and praise the lord in a circle. Then possibly play a fun game of secret santa. Afterwards exchange gifts, and open presents. After a few more partying hours, everyone would sleep and spend the day afterwards together. It a pretty chill day and around lunchtime they would have leftovers from the night before.

The Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12. The night before the feast the Mexican community gathers at St. Michaels for a viril. Outside the church everybody gathers in a circle, recite the prayers, recount the story. After they go inside the church and sing songs.

The Day of our Virgin of Guadalupe commemorates the appearance of Mary to the Mexican peasant Juan Diego in 1531. The Virgin of Guadalupe is referring to the Virgin Mary. She is a important saint in the Roman Catholic religious tradition. She holds a special place in the culture and religious life of many Mexicans and Mexican Americans.

What does it celebrate? “Dia de La Raza” means “Day of the Race”, and it commemorates the first contact between the Europeans and Native Americans. This is the first day Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas.
