SAVE THE DATES MULE DAY 2023 Mule Day has been a popular Columbia tradition since the 1840s. It began as “Breeder’s Day,” a single-day livestock show and mule market event held on the first Monday in April. Over time Mule Day evolved. The first “official” Mule Day was held in 1934, which consisted of the parade and a mule show in downtown Columbia after the parade. Evolving still, Mule Day went from being a single-day event to a multi-day festival, attracting thousands of attendees. The Mule Day parade is the highlight of the event. If you visit during this, you might see a square dance, mule-driving contest, horse show, crafts festival, or attend a flea market. Other events include “working mule,” “best of breed,” or even lumberjack competitions. In addition, traditional local food, music, dancing, and crafts are featured. BEAR CREEK LANDSCAPES NEW LOCATION Bear Creek Landscapes recently moved its operations to a new location at 716 W. 11th Street in Columbia. 8 Muletown local February 2023 PAGE 10 > GET YOUR HISTORIC MAURY COUNTY LICENSE PLATE If you’re not a fan of the State of Tennessee’s blue license plate, there’s a new alternative to consider: a specialty tag that benefits the Maury County Historical Society. “To create a specialty motor vehicle tag, you have to go through the Tennessee State Legislature and get it approved, and we thank Representative Scott Cepicky and Senator Joey Hensley for helping us,” begins Eric Previti, President of the Maury County Historical Society. Now Previti is working to ensure that motorists pre-order enough tags for the state to begin issuing the plates, which feature an artist’s rendering of the Maury County Courthouse clocktower. The Historic Maury County plate is available to anyone with a registered motor vehicle in Tennessee. However, the county-specific nature of the plate presents an added challenge in terms of reaching the one-thousand tag threshold within the allotted oneyear time frame. “When you introduce a vanity tag in Tennessee, normally your client base is the entire state. But in our case, the focus is on Maury County,” says Previti, who hopes that the plates will be BY JASON ZASKY BENEFITTING THE MAURY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY Eric Previti and Mike Wolfe hold a sample Historic plate. < FROM PAGE 8 10 Muletown local February 2023 of interest to current and former residents of Maury County, like those individuals who grew up in, say, Columbia, but have since relocated to another part of the state. “We have until June 30, 2023, to sell one-thousand tags,” continues Previti, before noting that the Maury County Courthouse — which dates to the beginning of the twentieth century — is the most photographed building in the county. “It’s a $35 deposit, and that gets you in line to get the plate, and when we sell one-thousand tags, the County Clerk will let you know your plate is here,” he adds. At that point, buyers pay the balance, as specialty tags are $90 per year. “The state has waived their portion of the fee, so that takes $25 off the cost of the tag, but that offer is only good until June 30,” he says. As to the funds that are raised from the sale of the tags, those will go toward helping to preserve history in Maury County. “The Maury County Historical Society gives grants to historical sites that need funding,” advises Previti, with past recipients including The Polk Home, Elm Springs, Antrim, and the Mount Pleasant Museum of Local History. “The funds that we raise will help give out more grants,” he says. Previti also encourages locals to consider joining the Maury County Historical Society, whose members receive a quarterly magazine and meet bi-monthly at historic locations within Maury County, which is best known for its antebellum homes. “An antebellum home is any home that was built before the war between the states,” explains Previti, who counts Elm Springs and Rattle and Snap Plantation among his favorite local historical sites. He says he aims to do everything possible to preserve Maury County’s history, even as the city experiences a growth spurt. “I grew up in Columbia, I’m a 1983 graduate of Columbia Central High School, and I’m currently chairman of the Maury County Commission,” he adds. “We are experiencing lots of growth, but we also want to preserve our history and save of much of it as we can.” To apply for a Historic Maury County license plate visit: HistoricMaury.com Or send your $35 deposit to the Maury County Historical Society: P.O. PAGE 14 > 12 Muletown local February 2023 MID TN FENCE IS BOOMING The team at Mid TN Fence can tell you business is booming in the fencing industry. It’s a trend seen nationwide. Some of it stems from increased housing construction and a growing desire by people for more privacy and security. Since opening a little less than three years ago, the Columbia-based company has installed fencing all over Middle Tennessee. “We started in 2020, right in the middle of COVID,” says Ashley Robinson. “And we’ve consistently grown. We had a vision for starting a company where we offer great customer service and tackle jobs in a timely manner.” The company is owned by Kenneth Poag. Robinson handles administration and runs the office, Ryan Springer (who has extensive experience in the industry) handles sales, and a dedicated crew installs the fencing. “A customer will call,” Robinson says, “and let me know what they’re thinking. I’ll send Ryan out to meet with them, and he’ll walk through and measure off the linear footage they need. Sometimes they know what they want right off the bat, whether it’s wood privacy fencing or vinyl, aluminum, three-board, or fourboard. And if they don’t know, Ryan offers suggestions on what works best.” Although they handle both commercial and residential fencing, Robinson says most of their work is residential. “Many of the calls we get involve people wanting to keep their kids or pets in or other creatures out. They may want a privacy fence or a chain link fence, something their dogs can’t poke their heads through.” PAM WINDSOR Photography provided.

14 Muletown local February 2023 < FROM PAGE 12 The goal is to help customers determine the best fencing to meet their needs and make them aware of some of the factors involved. “For example, maintenance is a factor,” Robinson explains. “When it comes to a wood privacy fence, it’s going to require more upkeep. In six months, you’re going to want to stain, treat, or paint it, and then you have to keep up with it. A lower maintenance fence would be aluminum or vinyl.” For those considering adding fencing, Robinson suggests knowing your property lines beforehand. It’s the homeowner’s responsibility to know where fencing can and cannot go. Another thing to think about is how many gates you think you’ll need. “How many gates do you want, and what are the needs for the gates? Is a vehicle going to be driving through it, or is it just a walk-through gate? With the cost of fencing materials going up in recent years, once customers get an estimate, they’ll need to make a decision rather quickly. “Pre-COVID, Ryan could give an estimate and say we’re going to honor this for 30 days,” Robinson explains. “You would have 30 days to think about it. But in today’s world, we can only allow five days because our prices fluctuate so much.” Once a customer decides, Robinson locks in the price by ordering the materials immediately. King Cake From the Kitchen of Margie Girard The plastic baby represents the “baby Jesus.” The King Cake is baked in honor of the three Kings in search of baby Jesus. Traditionally, the King Cake is served on Kings Day, which is the festival of Epiphany. The colors of the sugars represent: Purple-justice and royalty, Green-faith and new beginnings, and Gold-power and kingly. Whoever gets the slice of cake with the baby will have good luck and prosperity. GOT A GREAT RECIPE YOU WANT TO SHARE?
