New Kid on the Block: What Every Parent Must Know About ChatGPT "There is a lot we still don't know about ChatGPT. P.7As AI tools become more available, it becomes more important for P.6 families to P.5 talk with children about how to use them appropriately and responsibly." What is ChatGPT? ChatGPT is a computer program that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to generate text. Launched in 2022 by research company OpenAI, it gathers large amounts of data from the internet to create responses on demand. ChatGPT is unique because its answers are in conversational format, similar to how people write and speak. It can write essays and computer code, solve math problems, and much more. How do you use ChatGPT? To use ChatGPT, you first create a free account on the OpenAI website. Then you simply type questions or commands in the text box. Your requests can be as basic or elaborate as you can imagine. For example, you could ask it to write a story in the voice of your favourite movie character. Or ask it to give you a recipe based on the food you have at home. The tool allows you to continue to refine the answer by adding more instructions. ChatGPT saves a record of your conversations that you can view or continue at a later time. ChatGPT 101 ChatGPT, a natural language processing tool driven by AI technology, allows users to engage in human-like and much more with the chatbot. The "GPT" in ChatGPT is short for generative pre-trained transformer. In the field of AI, raining refers to the process of teaching a computer system to recognize patterns and make decisions based on input data - much like how a teacher gives information to students, then tests their understanding of that information. How do you access ChatGPT? The OpenAI website currently does not accept registrations and usage directly from Hong Kong users. To access ChatGPT, you can either: (1) register for a VPN and connect via a supported country/region, or (2) download the mobile app POE launched by the App Store. seechangehk

CHATGPT 101

Where does ChatGPT get its information?

Examples of contexts where ChatGPT may be useful:

To craft its responses, ChatGPT copies and remixes information from other places on the internet. It doesn't tell you its sources or who created the original information.

As a virtual customer support agent that can answer questions and provide assistance to customers 24/7, helping businesses save on customer support costs while providing a seamless and responsive customer experience. As a personal assistant to help with various tasks, such as scheduling appointments, setting reminders, and answering questions about daily life. As an educational tool to help students learn and understand complex topics. It can provide explanations, definitions, and examples to help students grasp difficult concepts.

As of this article's publication date, it uses internet data created up to 2021 only. The tool is still being developed, so it can make mistakes, spread misinformation, and give inaccurate answers. Why are some schools and universities banning ChatGPT? Some schools and universities around the world, including some in Hong Kong, are blocking ChatGPT on campus networks and school-issued devices or banning its use. The concern is that students could use it to do their schoolwork for them, from writing papers to solving equations. They could also be turning in work with inaccurate information. Educators are worried the program could affect students' learning if they rely on it. Check with your children's school to see if and how they allow students to use ChatGPT.

Should children use ChatGPT? While OpenAI's Terms of Use state that users must be aged 18+, it doesn't ask users to verify their age when creating an account. Younger kids could easily access ChatGPT and come across content that's not age-appropriate. Also, ChatGPT collects personal information and user data to improve the system but this may be shared with third parties for things like advertising. Under privacy and data protection legislation, collecting personal information from children may be illegal without parental consent. If children are interested in using ChatGPT, the best option is to use it alongside an adult. Children could use ChatGPT with a parent to get ideas about things they're interested in, like writing code or music. Families can explore the tool together and try prompts that are fun, inspiring, or helpful. Ask it to write a play with parts for everyone, or put together a poem to read out loud. 2 | See Change Education

Meet our Beneficiaries

Children are meant to enjoy their carefree childhoods, but unfortunately, there is a group of children who suffer from rare diseases every single day. Basic rights such as survival and health have become distant dreams for them. Since 2014, Lifewire has been devoted to connecting caring individuals with sick children in society, hoping to bridge the gap between them.

The Playright Children's Play Association (Playright), established in 1987, is a Hong Kong-based charity organization encouraging children's play in society. With our professionalism, passion and empowerment, we aim for building a society that respects, protects and fulfills a Child's Right to Play, where children can enjoy their happy and fruitful childhood.

Getting to Know Ms. Ruth, Speech & Debate Coach My name is Ruth. I am a law graduate, currently based in Hong Kong, where I am coaching debate and public speaking to students ranging from ages 5 to 17. Throughout high school and university, I have completed several Model United Nations and moot court competitions. These experiences sparked my interest in being a debate and public speaking coach, pushing young students to think beyond what they think they know and have a varied perspective of the world. Teaching at See Change Education has helped me realize that honing criticalthinking skills is something that needs to be developed as early as primary school, if not earlier. Interacting with the students here proved that even when they are young, they are already able to think critically and independently. I am keen to continue contributing to the work here at See Change where we can make a lasting impact on the community.
