GOING PiNK!

Event season is on the horizon! We’re previewing what’s to come!

EMPLOYEE FORUM RECAP Pg. 3

SHARING SOME GOOD KARMA Pg. 6

THE FLU POD IS ALMOST HERE Pg. 10

A Message from President & CEO, Michelle Joy A Recap of September Where has the time gone… it seems like just yesterday I was writing my first Compass message and now a month has passed and it is time for another one. What a busy month it has been! We kicked off the month of September with All Employee Forums and a Physician/CEO Roundtable. It was great to see all who attended especially as we had standing room only at a few locations. The key takeaways from the All Employee Forums were One Team, One Mission as to why we are here; getting back to basics in all that we do especially as we build our 2023 Scorecard around Caregiver Engagement/ Turnover, Patient Experience, Quality Care, & Financial Performance; and the Rules of the Game to get us there, which are SWISH (more of that on page two). In addition to the All Employee Forums, some other highlights from September included completion of annual evaluations with caregiver increases going into effect at the beginning of October per the CTHEA agreement; clarification of the state mandated Cultural Competency training for all caregivers with a completion due date of November 1; CTMAP huddle board changes (with more to come) providing more time for dialogue on immediate department needs; and 2023 department budgets were submitted and reviewed with each director and manager. There is still some work to do to get to our target, but we are close! September patient volumes were higher than August for LTACH Patient Days at 383 versus 353; ER Visits of 3,399 versus 3,272; and an Acute Average Daily Census of 128 versus 126. Lastly, a huge shout out to everyone who answered the call for volunteers at the Minden Air Show this past weekend, October 1 & 2. We didn’t have enough slots for everyone at this event, but as we build our presence at other community events and learn from this past weekend, there will be plenty of opportunities in the future. After volunteering Saturday morning, I left with a full heart so grateful, proud, and thankful for CTH and every one of you. I can’t tell you the number of community members stopping by the booth (for free sunscreen, chapstick, and water) who shared their experience of being a patient at Carson Tahoe. Some of those stories were a woman who came to CTH for her ankle MRI from Tonopah; a couple recently relocated from California who are establishing all of their care at CTH; a woman who is on her last rounds of chemotherapy at the Cancer Center; a gentleman fully recovered from spine surgery with Dr. Mendoza (we saw his scars as proof); and another gentleman who two weeks ago had his hernias repaired robotically by Dr. Knoll with no post-op pain and will be returning to work next week. There are so many more I could share! We ARE making a difference in our community and it takes the entire Carson Tahoe TEAM to do this. THANK YOU for all you do each and every day for our patients, each other, and our community! 2

Employee Forum Recap

One mission, one team the new CTH focus was introduced at the recent Employee Forums to bring all of us back to why we are here, “to enhance the health and well-being of the communities we serve,” and in order to do that, it will take all of us working as one team. The first parts of our playbook to help us get there include: Rules of the Game: S - Start with Yes; Solutions, Not Excuses – Figure out how, do what is right not what is easy, where there is a will there is a way. W - We are One Team – Sink or swim together, no one stands alone, remove silos. I - I Have a Voice – Share your ideas, stop the line, your input matters! S - Service First for All – Be responsive, be respectful, be on time, be present. H - Have fun! A Scorecard: Starting in 2023, our scorecard will tell us how we are doing on One Team, One Mission through caregiver engagement and turnover, patient experience, quality metrics, and financial performance. Our Current Activities: Traveler reduction plan, Nurse Apprenticeship Program (more on that on pg. 7), 2023 Budget (our goal will be to have at least breakeven performance, if not better), Annual Relias Training & Evaluations, Work Place Violence trainings, EPIC Optimizations (upgrade coming later this year). We would like to thank everyone who attended one of our Employee Forums and asked questions. Your inquiries help make our organization better by challenging the status quo and shifting us into new and better processes. In case you were unable to attend one of the meetings, have no fear. We have highlighted a few of the questions asked and those responses!

Future goal for BHS and Mallory Crisis Center. “If we had unlimited dollars, we would expand all of it, especially in providing services to adolescents. Unfortunately, we don’t have the resources or funding to do that but continue to look for ways to provide what we can. Christina Sapien, Director of BHS, and her team are continually looking for ways we can do more with what we have.” Can we get free coffee for staff in the cafeteria? “Many departments have coffee and hot water available for staff. Due to our agreement with Starbucks, Carson Tahoe Health is unable to provide free coffee in the cafeteria.” In terms of recognizing recruitment/retention, how do we set ourselves apart from other hospitals? “Total rewards and culture of our organization. We can’t get into wage wars with other hospitals because that is unsustainable. What culture do we want to have at CTH? Leaning into our history and re-building the sense of family (team).”

Don’t forget! If you have a question that you would like answered at our next Employee Forums, make sure to head to the Intranet, and click on the “Questions for CTH” banner listed on the home page! Be on the lookout for upcoming dates of the next Employee Forums!

Thursday, October 20 at 8 AM Bristlecone Room | RMC Friday, October 21 at 8 AM Bristlecone Room | RMC What is HERT Training? HERT stands for Hospital Emergency Response Team and is the hospital’s disaster decontamination and triage team. It is vital for CTH to have HERT members who are non-clinical as well as clinical in the event of a real incident. Emergency preparedness is the responsibility of every department and staff member in the facility. A clinical or patient care background is NOT a requirement for HERT membership, so anyone who is interested, regardless of their department or job responsibilities, is welcome and encouraged to attend. BONUS: This training counts towards education hours, which means you’ll get paid if you’re hourly! In this HERT training, we will learn about emergency response, hazardous materials, how to triage patients (again, this can be done by non-clinical staff), how to properly don and doff full PPE, and how to decontaminate victims. If you would like to participate, please coordinate with your supervisor & then RSVP to Vicky Olson at x5168 or [email protected].

’ Thank you to all of our incredible PAs, for all you do and for making a difference in our patient’s lives every day! This week, we celebrate you!

Nurse Apprentice Program (NAPs) CTH is proud to announce that the organization will be hiring 40 nursing students as part of the Nurse Apprentice Program (NAP), funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Grant. These apprentices are helping fill a much bigger need for our non-profit organization, as the healthcare industry continues to face a national nursing staff shortage. During their time participating in this program, the students will be able to experience different units/specialties within CTH before graduating as a nurse.

Honoring the selfless actions of others ... Staff recently lined the halls of the ICU for a special Honor Walk - a time when staff pay their respects to a patient on their journey to donating their organs. According to Donate Life America, one organ, eye, and tissue donor can save and heal more than 75 lives! It was a special moment to witness - thank you to all who came to show their support.

Flu Shot POD During the annual 'Flu Shot Kickoff' we will conduct a Public Point of Distribution (POD) drill. A POD is set up during emergencies, like an event of a major exposure, to distribute needed medicines or vaccines. This event allows us the opportunity to test our POD readiness.

Why: During an emergency, it is crucial to first care for the needs of hospital-related staff and their families. Knowing the family is safe, caregivers are free to focus on the need of the community. Setting up a delivery system to treat thousands of people in a short period of time takes practice. Our annual 'Flu Shot Kickoff' offers the perfect time to simulate the POD process.

We'll see you there! October 6, 2022 3 - 6 PM Specialty Medical Center Education Building

Importance of Attendance: In order to test our skill, we need as many employees, volunteers, friends, and physicians (no cost) as possible to participate on Thursday, October 6, to receive their flu shots. Family and friends are also encouraged to attend and receive their flu shots from Carson City Health & Human Services for $20 or they will bill insurance. Please bring your insurance card. High dose serum will be available for those ages 65-and-older. Please bring your Medicare card.

A NEW (AND BETTER) WAY TO SUBMIT FMLA!

Carson Tahoe Health will now be outsourcing the FMLA process through FMLASource.

HOW TO SUBMIT FMLA Step 1: Contact FMLASource by either the website or by phone. You can also download the app FMLASourceNow & create an account to track your status & even log absences.

1-866-380-0715

Monday – Friday, 5:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. PST

www.fmlasource.com

Step 2: Receive the Medical Certification Form from either your Leave Notification Packet (sent by FMLASource) or download from www.fmlasource.com. The Medical Certification Form is time-sensitive material. Be certain to check for the certification due date on your initial request letter provided in your FMLA Notification Packet. Step 3: Take the blank Medical Certification Form to either your or your family member’s Health Care Provider. If your leave is not for medical reasons, please follow the instructions provided by the FMLASource Specialist and/or your Leave Notification Packet. Step 4: Ensure that FMLASource received the completed Medical Certification Form prior to the certification due date. It is your responsibility to ensure paperwork gets returned in a timely fashion. If there are delays completing your forms, be sure to contact FMLASource prior to your certification due date. Return the completed Medical Certification Form to FMLASource: • E-Mail: [email protected] • Fax: 877.309.0218 • Address: FMLASource, NBC Tower – 13th Floor, 455 N. Cityfront Plaza Drive, Chicago, IL 60611-5322 Step 5: Review the Decision Letter from FMLASource. Please note that the decisions are based on the certification completed by the health care provider. Notify FMLASource if your leave was denied and you need clarification on next steps. Step 6: If approved for the leave, you will be responsible for keeping track of your available entitlement: • Intermittent Frequency Leave: Be sure to report each intermittent FMLA absence to FMLASource by midnight of the date of absence and follow your department’s call-off procedures. This process replaces the current intermittent tracking form. All prescheduled appointments need to be tracked ahead of time with both FMLASource and CTH. Failure to call off to both parties may be subject to disciplinary action. • Continuous Frequency Leave: Pay close attention to the date range on your decision letter. Your position at CTH is only protected during that date range. To keep your entitlement accurate and to ensure protection, please notify FMLASource if your leave is different than what was provided on the decision letter.

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP BREAKFAST

Carson Tahoe Health was so excited to represent at the 5th Annual Northern Nevada Women’s Leadership Breakfast event held at the Atlantis in Reno last month. The topic? Resilient Leadership: Sustaining Balance In The Face of Burnout and Fatigue. The keynote speaker was Jerry Bridge, from Lifeworks Education and included a discussion featuring a panel of leaders, including Carson Tahoe’s own CEO, Michelle Joy!

14

We know teamwork, makes the dream work ... And when you feel at ease, cooperative, and ready to think outside of the box - that’s when teams thrive. But life can be hectic and chaotic, and sometimes your peers don’t always see eye-to-eye. So to help you and your team find a more centered mindset ahead of your next meeting, Calm has provided a new 60 and 90 second Pre - Meeting Meditation. Calm has provided two meditions, one led by Professor Megan Reitz, an executive coach and mindfulness teacher ... and one from Chibs Okereke, a stress and burnout specialist and meditation teacher.
